POPULARITY
Our guest this week, Chelsea Hofmann, loves to feel her pulse quicken and gets excited by the idea that anything could happen. She lives her life spontaneously so her love of the thriller genre with its twists, turns, and surprise endings fit her personality just fine. After finishing college and moving to Southern California with her husband, she wanted to reconnect with her love of reading books that she had as a child but none of the book clubs she tried felt like a good fit. So she started a virtual book club on the Instagram platform called Thrillers By The Bookclub. As that virtual club became became popular with members all over the globe, people started asking her about in-person book clubs. Chelsea nurtured this idea, encouraging book lovers to start their own Thriller By The Book Club chapters. There are now over 27 chapters and more are still forming. Today I talked with Sigrid Gilmer. Sigrid makes black comedies that are historically bent, totally perverse, joyfully irreverent and concerned with issues of identity, pop culture and contemporary American society. Sigrid burst onto the national theater scene with her play Harry and the Thief, an action film/historical/time travel play about a thief who is blackmailed into traveling back in time to deliver a cache of arms to Harriet Tubman. It has since been produced across the country, including runs at the Pavement Group (Chicago), the Know Theatre (Cincinnati), and the Skylight Theatre (LA). Additional select works include Slavey (Clubbed Thumb), Seed: A Weird Act of Faith, It's All Bueno (Cornerstone Theater Company), Frilly, and White 3: Manifestdestinyland. Her television work includes: A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix) and Claws (TNT). Sigrid's play Mama Metal is playing right now at IAMA Theatre Company at the Atwater Village Theatre through June 23rd. You can get tickets iamatheatre.com.
Adaptations have taken the film and TV industry by storm. In today's entertainment world, it's only a matter of time before a successful novel is optioned and developed into a visual medium for the masses. But despite the desire for producers and directors to sink their teeth into books, is it actually successful? What should a reader's relationship between books and adaptations be like? Is it possible to find an adaptation that's better than the source material? In today's episode, we ask our panel of teens to discuss adaptations and share their opinions on the book to screen transformation. This week Matthew is on assignment so Kyle and Laura welcome Lacretia Lyon to the show to chat about the long running cult favorite show Supernatural. They talk about handsome Dads. And handsome boys. And at one point it spins off into a chat just about cute boys in general. Plus we talk about demons. And how great monster of the week shows are. Plus, we entertain the idea of an all CW universe cross over event and how insane that might be. Lacretia has an encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture stuff that rivals or maybe even surpasses Kyle. So kick back, relax and watch the references fly! Weekly Rads: Kyle - Spider-Man: Enter The Spider-Verse (movie) Laura - A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix series) and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (book) Lacretia - King of the Hill (show) This episode is brought to you by Mack Weldon! Based on the internationally best selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler), season two of the Netflix original series plunges further into the epic world of this darkly comedic mystery. Executive produced by Emmy Award-winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler - the new season of A Series of Unfortunate Events consists of ten cinematic one-hour episodes, and premiered worldwide in the spring 2018, exclusively on Netflix. A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans – Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – and their extraordinary encounters with the devious Count Olaf who will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. In this episode of THE ANNOTATOR, Jim Dooley discusses balancing some of the more menacing and psychological Bernard Herrmann influences with the whimsical nature of the books and series.
