Intro -Vince Welcome back to another episode of Let's Go Hunt, the hunting podcast least likely to steal your lunch money.  Tonight we have: Mike Goncalves, who lost a good looks contest to a badger. Sam Alexander - karaoking a brunette sonnette with your sister Dave Packard, who may or may not be deceased, but is still definitely on location.  Somewhere else. And, The ever uninspired, Vince H   Around the Campfire Tonight: Head and Broads, in an order that might surprise you I want to talk about broadheads, again.  This time crossbow broadheads, but also broadheads in general. It's a long word to type, “broadheads”. Lot's of letters in there. Let's call them bh for now.  Crossbow BHs are ostensibly rated for higher speeds and force to deal with the speeeeeeeed the speeeeeeeeed. Lot's of nonsense on the internet about needing solid steel ferrules and not aluminum ones but that shit is in the bolt/arrow, not the broadhead.  I suppose there's only one way to test this, which is to shoot some into a target and see what happens.  Short story is I got an open box deal on bolts, and I want to marry those bolts to cheaper broadheads and continue the beaver harpooning. Could just toughen up and zero the .308 but the nice part about the crossbow is I can zero it right there next to the truck and get going without the additional time to get to the rifle range. Spent a couple nights with Dave and his stepdad.  Had a really good time with them. Camping on the cot was cold, but under the cot.  Need more insulation there.  Little Buddy heater worked terrible.  Kept shutting off after five mins. Got it to work for 30 mins once.  Then got up and just got to it Howd the hunt actually go Got to a spot they told me about about 90 mins before sunrise.  Got some great pics but didnt see any animals.  Went for a walk, saw nothing, went back to truck. Proceeded to 4x4 all over the gd mountain.  It was an absolute blast.  Ope, a wheel slipped.  Okay…brake, 4LockLo and crawl right over anything.  Kinda cool Found one herd and saw a fork horn.  Texted squeezer and he lightly convinced me to chase.  Chased, found tracks, bedding and water but they were poof. Headed back to camp for a bit to rest, and then went back out to a different spot.  Cruised around that loop for an  hour or so, making hikes up the mtn every now and then.  Absolutely gorgeous 4x4 trail. Finally found a herd of nine does and spotted a fork horn.  Drove right on by and pretended I didn't see them Parked and snuck up staying low and behind hills and rocks.  Got close and was able to ID the fork, but didn't have a shot.  He moved, so I just stayed still and patient.  Most of them didn't care and went about their day but one had her eyes and ears on the rock I was behind the whole time.  She knew I was there. Finally ID'd the fork and got ready.  Steadied up and squeezed.  I saw him jump, and bolt, but I knew it was good.  Climbed up to where he had disappeared and found him exactly where I expected to.   Cooler, crime scene and knives. Send us a textThe prairie doesn't forget—and it won't let us forget either. We follow a chilling thread from a 96-mile irrigation scheme called the Eureka Canal to a vanished laborer whose story was buried in snow, silence, and someone else's balance sheet. What begins as a Halloween ghost story widens into a study of hubris, place, and the quiet power of naming the lost.We unpack Asa T. Soule's rise from hop bitters fortune to Western empire building, and how the canal promised a new Eden but ran headlong into the Arkansas River's fickle flow, upstream diversions, and soils that drank hope dry. Cimarron's resistance to Soule's political muscle frames the stakes: when capital treats geography and democracy as obstacles, the land and its people push back. Alongside the spectral sightings at the ditch, we track records, letters, and courthouse files to a name—Silas Croft—whose ruined farm in New York and final steps into the 1886 blizzard turn rumor into history. When the storm returns and a haunted rage rattles the Cimarron Hotel, brute force proves useless. Truth does what bullets can't: we write the obituary Silas never received and publish an expose that rebalances the ledger. The wails fade, the canal goes quiet, and a simple cross on the prairie replaces fear with remembrance. From there, the story pivots to legacy and choice: fame back East or roots in a town that values ground truth. We choose the pressroom over the spotlight, because progress isn't measured in ditches or dollars—it's measured in decency, accountability, and the names we refuse to lose.If you believe stories can right old wrongs and that journalism still matters when the wind starts to howl, hit play, follow the show, and share this episode with a friend. Send us a textA storm-torn trench. A vanished name. And a legend that clings to the Cimarron plains like dust to a boot. We follow the rise and ruin of Soule's Eureka Canal—hailed as progress, mocked as folly—and the night the sky split open and swallowed a worker named Silas Croft. What started as an audacious plan to force water through stubborn Kansas earth becomes a ghost story that refuses to settle, stirring questions about pride, loss, and the memories the land won't release. We trace the arc from Asa T. Soule's grand decree to the shovel-scarred ditch that cracked under weather and will. Along the way, we sit with the unsettling details of that gale, the mud-choked banks at dawn, and the whisper that Silas never left. The tale opens a wider window on Western folklore, where frontier ghost stories double as cautionary tales—reminding us that ambition has a cost and landscapes have their own laws. Whether you hear a restless spirit on the canal's edge or see only wind teasing the reeds, the mystery pulls you back to the same question: what truly happened when the ditch took its due?If frontier history, haunted legends, and eerie prairie nights are your kind of campfire, this Halloween special delivers a chill with a heartbeat. Press play for a tightly told story, rich atmosphere, and a few goosebumps, then tell us what you believe. You can subscribe to more Western ghost stories, share them with a friend who loves good haunting, and leave a review with your theory about the Phantom Canal. This method of bear control required a great deal of skill and was a dying vaquero art.  What can we learn from this?   Eventual Ad Slot   Personal Gear Chat and Updates: Mike  Back to the quacken on Sunday.   Early decoys, easily smoked one that came in.  buddy smoked another later.  Landed on the ground with a really satisfying thud. Things slowed down; birds weren't flying so we took the boat out and went after em Straight to the islands I wanted to hit this time of year.   There was a whole herd of deer on the biggest island and it's at least a half mile swim.  Wonder if they swam out there or got stuck when it thawed. Snuck up on some geese.  Not really sneaky or stealthy in a canoe but, it worked.  They didn't care about us and we got close enough for me to swat one.  Caternary is a bitch. Moved on down the islands and found like 8 dozen ducks, some more geese and a few cormorans.  Don't shoot cormorans. He took a shot and missed at the swarm of ducks.  I had an opportunity for the geese that lit off but didn't have my gun in my hands so, whatever. We rowed off elsewhere, and in the process a Gadwall headed straight for us.  I dropped it with a nice splash. started heading back for the trucks and honed in on some more geese.   Kept a slow approach but they did not care one iota about us.  Their mistake. Managed to close in 50 yards, swatted one, dropped a second as they “fled”.  Buddy shot two.  The rest of them just kinda hung out like “Frank!  Henry!  Noooo!”  I would have shot two more, but I couldn't remember the limit so  I left it.  Turns out it's five, not three. Packaged up the geese and froze em and made duck teriyaki with the breasts.  Nom nom nom. All in all I am feeling much more comfortable with the Advocate and the 1187.  Not thinking about shots, just going by feel.  Except for caternary… that's a bitch. Right after that, some boat pulls up and yells at us about goose season.  Dave Pheasants Forever  New pack New binos Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands fuckery? For Bud Barnes, these two places share a lot more in common than the first two letters of their names. On this week's episode, Bud shares stories of growing up in south Florida, working cows, hunting, fishing, and generally enjoying the backwoods of our state whether from horseback or the seat of an airboat. We discuss how rodeo carried him west where he met his wife and built a ranch and thriving business in Oklahoma. That he genuinely cares about people and the land is abundantly clear which is why forming Cimarron Land Group was a natural fit for him. Bud is able to channel his passion for cattle, spending time in the outdoors, and his years of experience with both into assisting people with finding  the right land on which to build their legacies. Hope you enjoy this week's conversation and learn a little something useful along the way!

The Old West in America is filled with stories about cowboys and Native Americans and outlaws and lawmen. This was a time when a man could die in the streets with his boots on or at the poker table holding the Dead Man's Hand: a pair of aces and a pair of eights, all black. Cimarron, New Mexico was a prominent place in the Old West and the St. James Hotel was built there in 1872. Cimarron was a wild town that played host to a veritable who's who of old west gunmen, lawmen, gangs and famous performers like Buffalo Bill Cody. The hotel itself was witness to at least twenty-six deaths. And now the hotel seems to be playing host to spirits. The hotel is reputed to be quite haunted with at least seven identified spirits. Interview with Stephen Hanson, President & CEO of Surface Metals Inc.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/acme-lithium-acme-despatches-from-the-lithium-front-line-3054Recording date: 14th July 2025Surface Metals (CSE:SUR), formerly Acme Lithium, has successfully executed a strategic transformation that positions the company for value creation across two critical commodity sectors. Under CEO Stephen Hanson's leadership, the company has pivoted from pure lithium exploration to gold development while maintaining its valuable lithium asset foundation. The strategic shift emerged from pragmatic market realities as lithium prices declined and EV demand slowed over the past 18 months. Rather than abandoning the long-term energy transition thesis, Hanson explained the rationale: "As a board and a management team we started to evaluate our assets and say listen we work for the shareholders. Creating shareholder value is my number one priority."The centerpiece of this transformation is the April 2025 acquisition of 90% of the Cimarron gold project in Nevada's renowned Walker Lane trend. Located just 14 miles from Kinross's Round Mountain mine, the property boasts impressive historical data from major companies including Newmont and Echo Bay. Historical intercepts include 26 meters of nearly 5 grams per ton gold, with surface samples reaching 120 grams per ton.The project benefits from Nevada's world-class mining jurisdiction and favorable geology, featuring a shallow epithermal system with mineralization extending to surface. This configuration offers significant cost advantages and exploration potential beyond the existing 50,000-ounce resource, with targets for expansion to over one million ounces.Surface Metals maintains its lithium portfolio as strategic foundation value, including a 300,000-ton lithium carbonate resource in Clayton Valley and successful partnerships like the Snow Lake Energy joint venture in Manitoba. With holding costs of only tens of thousands annually, the company can maintain these assets through market cycles.Trading at approximately $5 million Canadian market cap, Surface Metals offers investors dual commodity exposure at an attractive entry point. The company plans drilling at Cimarron by early 2026, following systematic database modernization and permitting processes that typically require 90-120 days in Nevada's streamlined regulatory environment.View Surface Metals' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/acme-lithiumSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

The movies we viewed for this RKO 1931 Studios Year by Year episode couldn't be more different: the sprawling Cimarron (starring Richard Dix as America's psychotic inner conflict) prompts us to speculate about Edna Ferber as a source auteur and the intertwining of her vision of America with Hollywood across three decades; while the tight, play-like Traveling Husbands (starring Evelyn Brent as a bitter sex worker with noble impulses), demonstrates the pressures capitalism exerts on men and therefore on women. But together, these movies show that the Pre-Code is good for a lot more than just sex-and-crime titillation.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:    CIMARRON [dir. In this episode, Eric sits down with talented and celebrated artist, illustrator and author… Kadir Nelson! They discuss how he first discovered his artistic inclination and how it had been fostered from an early age; having been mentored by artist and art teacher Michael Morris; his uncle. His educational journey in art — having received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and upon graduating with highest honors, how he was summoned by DreamWorks Pictures to create conceptual artwork for Steven Spielberg's Oscar® nominated feature, “Amistad” and the animated feature “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”. They explore his artistic style and how it evolved through the years. From creating paintings and portraits, to illustration and sculpture! His distinct style of urban realism and how it's reminiscent of turn of the century American painters and historical subjects, often telling a story with his art and emphasizing the heroic. They discuss Nelson's process — what moves him and where he draws inspiration from.  How he's displayed his works at notable exhibitions and in the permanent collections of several esteemed institutions… including the United States House of Representatives, The National Baseball Hall of Fame, the World Trade Center, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture and most recently, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. They delve into exciting stories about how Nelson was commissioned by a host of distinguished clients including music legend John McClain; creating works in honor of Marvin Gaye... painting the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael” and recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”. His experience of creating cover artwork for the New Yorker magazine; that pay tribute to historical and contemporary American figures in New York City and abroad. How Nelson has authored and illustrated several award-winning New York Times Best Selling picture books including, “WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball” and the great honor he had of becoming the recipient of the prestigious Caldecott Medal for illustration..! Guest Bio: Kadir Nelson (b. 1974) is an award-winning American author and artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award as well the 2020 recipient of the Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. He adds this to multiple Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards, New York Times Best Illustrated Book Awards, several NAACP Image Awards and an Olympic Art Bronze medal, among others. Mr. Nelson has also created artwork for a host of distinguished clients, including but not limited to National Geographic, HBO, Nike, Disney, Hennessy, and Sony Music, for whom he painted the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael,” which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records® for the largest poster in the world. Nelson's artwork was also featured on the cover of recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”; over a dozen commemorative US postage stamps honoring American legends, such as Major League All-Stars Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain, and most recently Motown's Prince of Soul Marvin Gaye, which altogether have sold several million stamps. Nelson's primarily figurative paintings and sculptures focus on historical narratives and heroic subjects in American culture and are often informed by the Old Masters like Ingres, Michelangelo, Hopper, and Tanner. His sumptuous settings and characters, rich palette, and realistic, yet painterly technique speaks to both modern urban realism and masterly works of turn-of-the century American painters.
