THE LAST WATCH SKIP PLUS EPISODE OF SEASON THREE AND OF 2025! DON'T LOOK UNDER THE BED…..THE DUST BUNNY MIGHT EAT YOU!!!!Dave from Raiders of the Podcast joins WillDaBeast and Cupcake for the last episode of 2025 (and Season Three) to review Dust Bunny, the feature directing debut of Bryan Fuller, the creative wunderkind behind Heroes, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal. Starring Hannibal himself, Mads Mikkelson, Sophie Sloan, David Dastmalchian, and one Sigourney Weaver, this hybrid fairy-tale-actioner plays like “Amelie” meets “Luc Besson's The Professional” meets "John Wick". Is Fuller's creative brilliance (one that has seen him leaving many a high profile project) perfect for this kind of film, or like his imagination, is there just too much going on to be fully successful? The Cinematography Podcast Episode 338: Bryan Fuller and Nicole Hirsch Whitaker Bryan Fuller has one of the most recognizable visual signatures in modern television. Whether he's dealing with a forensic pathologist who bakes pies (Pushing Daisies) or a sophisticated cannibal (Hannibal), his work consistently balances the grotesque with the gorgeous. His style of hyper-stylized morbid surrealism was influenced by French maximalism in the 90's, such as Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, Amelie). “Between Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, and Amelie, there was this experience I had in the 90's and early aughts watching those films that gave me permission to push harder and go further in aesthetics that were on television,” Bryan explains. With his latest project, Dust Bunny, Bryan makes the leap from showrunning to feature directing, bringing his unique aesthetic to a dark fantasy-thriller. His decades of experience absorbing highly visual cinema have all led to this moment. “When I look at Dust Bunny, I'm like, that's a Barry Sonnenfeld shot. That's a John Carpenter shot. That's a Spielberg, because I've consumed all of these things and digested them and pooped out Dust Bunny.” Despite Bryan's self-deprecating description of the creative process, he was extremely meticulous about the filmmaking process. Cinematographer Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, ASC presented a comprehensive pitch deck that became the roadmap for the film's visual identity. “After the meeting, presenting her whole board with all of these images... she wanted the job and did a lot of work to show how she wanted the job,” says Bryan. Nicole, who shares Bryan's reverence for the same films, dove deep into the script to pull references ranging from The Professional and The Haunting (1963) to the raw, intimate photography of Nan Goldin. “I do think that it's important to make a good impression,” she says. “The deck is an impression of yourself as an artist that you leave behind.” During the interview, Nicole shares the pitch deck she made for Dust Bunny and discusses it in detail. Watch on YouTube or link to it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m0i5QVEarDFL248Vqvm3T-8a0watskba/view?usp=sharing The most radical visual choice in Dust Bunny is its aspect ratio. It's shot in an extreme 3:1 format (three squares wide), which is almost unheard of in modern cinema. This creates a triptych feel, where the frame is so wide it feels like a mural. It forces a sense of vertical claustrophobia, crushing the top and bottom of the frame. The camera emphasizes the floorboards and the space under the bed—precisely where the monster hides. This discovery occurred while Bryan and Nicole were testing lenses. Once the framing matte came off the lens, revealing the open gate width of the sensor, Bryan realized the wider view fundamentally changed the film's psychology. A subject centered in a 3:1 frame felt isolated in a way they hadn't before, sharpening the camera's emotional point of view. To further isolate the characters, Nicole tuned the ARRI Alpha anamorphic lenses to fall off at the edges, ensuring the audience's focus remains locked on the performance. While Dust Bunny was shot over 44 days in Budapest, the film's visual language was decades in the making. For Nicole, the challenge was translating a legendary showrunner's mental gallery into a physical reality. For Bryan, it was a homecoming to the cinematic influences that first gave him permission to be “too much.” See Dust Bunny in theaters. TV Mastermind Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) makes his feature directorial debut with Dust Bunny starring Mads Mikkelsen, Sigourney Weaver, and newcomer Sophie Sloan. On the surface this film has nothing to do with Steven Spielberg, but it turns out that it was originally developed as an episode of the Amazing Stories reboot and Spielberg himself gave notes on the script that survived to this feature version. Fuller talks all about that creative collaboration as well as his relationship with Spielberg's work and even gives us some of his patented "queer readings" of some unlikely contenders from Spielberg's filmography that spoke to his own queer coming of age. Recorded live at the Toronto International Film Festival, David Peck sits down with filmmaker Bryan Fuller to discuss Dust Bunny, Fuller's darkly playful and deeply personal feature debut. What begins as a conversation about genre influences, Frankenstein, Blade Runner and Gremlins, turns inward, as Fuller reflects on childhood fear, imagination, and fairy tales. Together they explore how the film reframes monsters as emotional realities rather than fantasy creatures, and how humour, wonder, and visual style create both distance and healing. Dust Bunny emerges as a story for adults that is frightening, funny, and so tender. Bryan Fuller is an acclaimed writer, producer, and filmmaker celebrated for his visually striking, emotionally complex storytelling. He is best known as the creator of genre-defining television series including Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, and Dead Like Me, as well as his work on Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods. Across television, Fuller has built a reputation for blending dark humour, heightened fantasy, and deeply human themes, often exploring identity, trauma, and transformation through bold, imaginative worlds. With Dust Bunny, his feature-film debut, Fuller brings his singular voice to cinema. Premiering at TIFF's Midnight Madness, the film merges fairy tale, horror, and wit into a deeply personal story rooted in childhood fear and resilience. Whether working in television or film, Fuller continues to push genre boundaries, crafting stories that are visually lush, emotionally resonant, and unafraid to confront the monsters—real and imagined—that shape us.David Peck is a writer, speaker, and award-winning podcaster who works at the intersection of storytelling, social change, and meaningful dialogue. We're holding it together with ribbons and Scotch tape this week on Breakfast All Day. Alonso is off promoting the new edition of his book, "Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas," so here's what we've got for you: ELLA McCAY: Yes, it is as baffling as you've heard. Thankfully, Tim Grierson from Screen International returns to help try and make sense of it. The latest film from Oscar-winner James L. Brooks stars Emma Mackey as a young lieutenant governor who must step up and lead her state, but various personal and professional crises get in the way. Jamie Lee Curtis, Albert Brooks and Woody Harrelson are among the impressive supporting cast. In theaters. DUST BUNNY: Writer-director Bryan Fuller (TV's "Pushing Daisies," "Hannibal") makes his feature debut with this delightfully dark tale. A precocious girl (Sophie Sloan) hires a hitman (Mads Mikkelsen) to kill the monster beneath her bed. But is the creature real, or just in her imagination? Sigourney Weaver and David Dastmalchian co-star. In theaters. If you're looking for Alonso's Christmas movie livestream, here it is, free to view on our Patreon. They include a documentary about the inventor of Pantone (The King of Color) as well as Mamoru Hosoda's anime about a princess avenging her father's death (Scarlet). The Ripley-like influencer from a 2022 thriller is on the prowl again (Influencers) as is the guy from the ‘80s who dressed like Santa Claus and killed a bunch of people but this time with a derivative twist (Silent Night, Deadly Night). The creator of Pushing Daisies and Hannibal makes his debut about a girl who hires a hitman to take care of the monster under her bed (Dust Bunny). Finally, the legendary James L. Brooks' returns with his first film in 15 years and the guys have very different takes on it.1:38 - The King of Color9:09 - Silent Night, Deadly Night18:46 - Scarlet26:02 - Influencers36:59 - Dust Bunny45:36 - Ella McCayCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTSIGN UP FOR AUDIBLEBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. Childhood fears, bedtime monsters, and the hazy membrane between imagination and trauma collide in “Dust Bunny,” the feature directorial debut of Bryan Fuller, a filmmaker whose storytelling instincts have always lived in the space between the two B's - beauty and brutality. It is a film that feels handcrafted out of nightmares and fairy-tale sugar, a creature feature through the eyes of a child who sees the world in magic and menace at the same time. Rich with color, shadows, and emotional ambiguity, it is unmistakably a Bryan Fuller movie, which is to say that it's tender, violent, mischievous, and sincere in equal measure.Joining The Discourse in today's episode is Bryan Fuller himself, the writer and director behind shows like “Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “American Gods,” and “Star Trek: Discovery” (in its early days). Fuller's signature blend of genre storytelling and emotional excavation finds a new form here as he steps behind the camera for his first feature-length film, crafting a story about a little girl who hires a hitman to kill the monster under her bed and discovers that nothing is simple when your fears have roots. The film stars Mads Mikkelsen, Sigourney Weaver, David Dastmalchian, Sophie Sloan, and Sheila Atim.

In this episode, Ezzi details the intense familial and organizational pressure that led to her baptism at age 15, despite her not feeling ready or understanding the doctrine. A significant portion of the conversation addresses the abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics she endured, including physical abuse from her mother and the coercive environment within the organization that affected both her mother and herself. We closely examine the traumatic process of being disfellowshipped (shunned) and the detrimental effects this had on Ezzi's relationships and mental health, highlighting the narcissistic and controlling nature often present in JW culture and relationships. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of performers—and also friends—who recently collaborated on a great single: Suki Waterhouse and Ashe. Waterhouse came into the public eye as a model and later an actress, but she's always had a passion for music: As you'll hear in this chat, she started recording songs before she had any notion that they might end up out in the world. Her slightly subdued Sub Pop debut came out in 2022, after which she had a sort of unexpected viral hit with an older song called “Good Looking.” A second album, the more upbeat Memoir of a Sparklemuffin, came out just a few months ago, and she's been on tour behind it while also juggling new motherhood. In fact, she Zoomed into this conversation while visiting her movie-star dude in Boston before heading out to play more shows. (You can Google the boyfriend if you must know.) The other half of today's conversation is Ashe, a Nashville-based songwriter who had a pretty big hit with her 2019 song “Moral of the Story” and another a couple of years later with Finneas, “Till Forever Falls Apart.” But the grind of success forced Ashe to hit the brakes on her career for a bit in order to regroup and hang on to her sanity. But a collaboration with Waterhouse lit the spark for Ashe once again, and she came back this year with a great record called Willson—and retook the stage to perform their song, “Pushing Daisies” at the Greek Theater. Check out that song right here. In this lively chat, Waterhouse and Ashe talk about the intensity of performing live in front of thousands of people, about how Suki is having fun playing the more lively songs from her new record, and about the need to not overschedule yourself, even when the pressure is on. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Suki Waterhouse and Ashe for chatting. Hello, detectives! Today, we are delighted to share a new show we think you'll love! Today we're sharing the first episode of Desert Skies, a quirky, comedic, and heartfelt audio drama about life on the road between this world and the next. The story takes place at a gas station in the afterlife called Desert Skies Astral Plane Fuel and Service Station. The staff at the station help new arrivals in the afterlife get ready to embark on their journey through the celestial spheres. Over the course of the show, what begins as a slice of life story following new arrivals to the station, quickly grows into an epic tale where the stakes are life—well, AFTER-life and death. It's part Adventure Time, part Pushing Daisies, part Futurama. The full first season is available now, and season 2 has just begun, so there's never been a better time to jump onboard! We truly hope you enjoy the first episode of Desert Skies! More info: https://pod.link/1634726836 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
