Annabelle was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer during COVID, entirely out of the blue, after what she assumed was a meaningless cough. In this conversation, Annabelle talks about how she has resisted the sentimental clichés surrounding illness, why she rejects the idea that cancer is a "battle," and how humor, contrarianism, and facing "the shipwreck of the soul" have shaped the way she lives now. George is well known as the announcer on America's longest-running game show, "The Price Is Right" where he continues on as Drew Carey's sidekick. For nearly three decades, George Gray has become a staple on American television as a host, comedian, actor and performer on a variety of popular TV programs across most major TV and Cable networks. In the late 90's George gained notoriety as the host of the live revival version of "The Gong Show" called "Extreme Gong" on GSN. That gig led George to land a plethora of new hosting credits that included the premiere season of "Junkyard Wars," a new hit series on TLC, that earned George a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.  George then went on to host the daily US broadcast version of the wildly popular game show "The Weakest Link" on NBC, as well as hosting other programs for the network, including the hit series "$25 Million-Dollar Hoax!" Having now fronted several popular shows, George Gray went on to host a variety of programs including "Gimme My Reality Show!" for FOX as well as a plethora of HGTV programs and specials, including series "What's With That House?", "HGTV Summer Showdown," "All Out Christmas" and "Man Land" where he traveled America looking for brave married men who claimed the basement, attic, or garage as their own, and tricked it out as a guy's paradise. Behind the scenes, Gray also created and co-hosted the sketch comedy show "A Guy Walks Into a Bar," with George Wendt of the "Cheers" fame. Larry Ellison and his son David Ellison have won the bid to acquire Warner Brothers Discovery in a $110 billion deal, edging out Netflix. The Ellisons, close allies of Donald Trump, are financing the purchase with $70 billion in debt, including roughly $25 billion from Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds. The final price of $31 per share was more than four times the recent low of Warner Brothers Discovery stock. What this means for American media is staggering. The Ellisons already control CBS and CBS News through their earlier $8 billion Paramount merger. This new deal adds CNN, HBO, HBO Max, DC Comics, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Comedy Central, Showtime, TNT, TBS, the Food Network, HGTV, Discovery, Adult Swim, OWN, The Learning Channel, Avatar Studios, and the Lord of the Rings and Mission Impossible franchises. Larry Ellison also holds a significant stake in TikTok through Oracle. Hawk outlines how Bari Weiss, placed in charge of CBS News and 60 Minutes, has already driven away viewers and credibility, including Anderson Cooper, who walked away from 60 Minutes after 19 years. The same playbook is expected to be applied to CNN. The deeper concern is the Ellisons' intent to gut creative talent and replace programming with AI-generated content to service the enormous debt load this deal carries. With Trump signaling regulatory approval, antitrust challenges are effectively neutralized. Scott Jennings and CNN's panel-yelling format come up as symbols of a media landscape already in decline. The consolidation of this much media power in the hands of Trump-aligned billionaires represents a fundamental threat to independent journalism and creative expression in America. This week we tackle Failure Frame, a show that Rick had initially rolled his eyes at  because when he looked at it it seemed like it would be another Arifureta clone. Rick admitted though that he quickly got hooked on the ruthless protagonist as well as the sheer effectiveness of the "useless" status ailments magic like sleep, paralyze, and poison, even if he spent half the season frustrated that the main character couldn't use anything other than those. And Jack breaks down the darker elements of the world, pointing out that the hero had been shaped by trauma, and not only by recent events but by his past rather than nobility, though he isn't quite as sold on the execution. We also talk about the finale, or lack thereof. Rick claims the show "No Game No Life'd" him because the open ending felt like a personal insult with no Season 2 in sight. Jack called out the "trash" animation and forced villain monologues. And while Rick was emotionally invested enough to be angry, Jack found the whole experience middling, arguing that while it was watchable, it gave him absolutely zero drive to pick up the light novels to see what happens next.About the anime:Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything with Low-Level Spells Follows Touka Mimori as he is summoned to another word with his classmates but rather then him being the hero he is immediately rated E-rank and tossed into a death dungeon by the goddess Vicius, his "useless" status effect skills (paralyze, poison, sleep) turn out to have a 100% success rate, which is the kind of quietly devastating detail that the goddess does not know about. This isn't just a power fantasy reversal, this show commits to Mimori as someone fundamentally is shaped by trauma by both his past and current life events and not some noble hero waiting to emerge. He develops two distinct personas depending on who he's dealing with, and the series doesn't shy away from making him genuinely ruthless when he thinks someone deserves it. The world around him is brutal in ways that feel thought-through and the "heroes" for the most part are corrupt and selfish, the institutions are all cruel by design, and Mimori's revenge arc is less about becoming an oppressor himself and more about protecting people the world has discarded Seras the elf princess hunted for her beauty, Eve Speed forced into bloodsport arenas.Next Week's Pick: “Moonrise”Have you had the chance to watch Failure Frame or any of our previous selections?
