Will Ashton returns with a solo Instant Take on Another Simple Favor, the Amazon Prime sequel to Paul Feig’s 2018 suburban noir comedy-thriller A Simple Favor. With Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively reprising their roles, this follow-up heads to Italy for a destination wedding filled with secrets, frenemy tension, and stylish intrigue. Will breaks down what works—and what fizzles—in this second helping. Despite a few fun twists and an appealing setting in Capri, the film struggles to recapture the charm of the original. Kendrick’s character lacks clear evolution, while Lively’s return, though enjoyable, can’t quite carry the film through its sillier and more uneven second half. With vibes that feel more White Lotus than Gone Girl, Another Simple Favor tries to balance camp, crime, and couture. Will questions whether this sequel really needed to exist at all, comparing it to other lackluster follow-ups (The Whole Ten Yards, anyone?) that get the gang back together but forget the plot. If you were a fan of the first film, there are still some moments of cheeky fun—like a memorable truth serum scene—but overall, this one might leave you regretting asking for more. “There's nothing wrong with Ellen. It's just that she loves too much.” We watched “Leave Her to Heaven” with our friend Emily Ollero Jones from the podcast “Female Driven,” and we're still trying to figure out a way to get Gene Tierney that Oscar. This Technicolor psychological thriller really has everything: melodrama, film noir, allusions to Greek mythology, and most importantly… that face! Not a soul can clock. Gene Tierney is really serving it up throughout this movie, and we just have one thing to say - congratulations on that face. Gene's femme fatale portrayal of Ellen sets the standard for Black Widows for years to come. Let's face it - Ellen Berent Harland threw herself down the stairs so Amy Dunne could, well… “Gone Girl” herself. So many “women's pictures” owe a great debt to “Leave Her to Heaven.” Would we have Divine's impeccably decorated Baltimore home in “Polyester” without it? When a man called 911 in 2015 to report his girlfriend had been kidnapped and he'd been drugged and tied up, police didn't believe him. The story was too strange, too cinematic — bearing uncanny resemblance to the plot of the movie “Gone Girl.” But the real twist was how wrong law enforcement got it. This episode of the Policing Matters podcast revisits the harrowing true story of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, and how Lieutenant Misty Carausu of the Alameda County (California) Sheriff's Office helped expose the truth buried beneath doubt, missteps and missed connections. Lieutenant Carausu recounts how a routine assignment to assist with a home invasion investigation in Dublin, California, led her to a suspect whose belongings – from ski masks to zip ties – raised red flags. But it was a strand of blonde hair tucked inside a pair of blacked-out goggles that shifted the course of the case. That single piece of evidence, paired with Carausu's determination, ultimately linked the suspect, Matthew Muller, to the high-profile kidnapping of Denise Huskins. PLUS, Seaside Police Chief Nick Borges joins the conversation to share how his outreach to the victims and renewed investigation helped uncover new crimes linked to the suspect. Welcome back to Born to Watch, where this week the team tackles the endlessly rewatchable, criminally underappreciated Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Strap in as Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land gear up for a sci-fi action loop fest featuring Tom Cruise in one of his most against-type roles, Emily Blunt as a full-metal badass, and a time-travel plot that actually sticks the landing. Enjoy our Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Review! The boys jump right into the paradox-riddled battlefield, first marveling at how this epic blockbuster somehow bombed in the US, despite being everything a great action movie should be. They blame lousy marketing, title confusion (was it Live Die Repeat?), and the fact that in 2014, Cruise was still on Hollywood's naughty step thanks to Oprah's couch. But now? It's cult-classic gold.Whitey kicks off by calling out just how rare it is to see Cruise playing the weasel, Major Cage is an ad man thrown into combat, clueless and terrified. For Dan, this fish-out-of-water arc makes the movie shine, watching Cruise go from smug coward to unstoppable warrior. Damo agrees, even calling Edge of Tomorrow his number one Cruise performance, yep, he goes there.Emily Blunt earns unanimous praise as Rita Vrataski, the “Angel of Verdun” and all-around exosuit-slaying legend. She's fierce, stoic, and fit as hell, basically the action heroine we didn't know we needed in 2014. Her iconic push-up entrance gets a lot of airtime (and a few longing sighs), and the team agrees she holds her own, and then some, against Cruise. And what would a Born to Watch ep be without the usual blend of insight and irreverence? We get tangents on everything from duck anatomy (cloacas, anyone?) to Bill Paxton's legendary status as the only man killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and an Alien. The Paxton love is real. The pod dives into director Doug Liman's sharp visuals and crisp pacing, and shout out screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who somehow turns a convoluted time loop premise into a tight, clever, and emotional thrill ride. Liman's resume (Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) gets the props it deserves, and there's a great sidebar on the upcoming Road House remake, complete with hot takes on Jake Gyllenhaal. As always, the “Hit, Sleeper, Dud” segment delivers, with Gone Girl getting the nod as a masterful hit, Kevin Costner's 3 Days to Kill as a solid sleeper, and Lucy (sorry, ScarJo) landing squarely in dud territory. Bonus points for Damo's vivid breakdown of Ben Affleck's infamous side-dick scene. The episode also features a glorious Cruise countdown. Each host reveals their top five Tom Cruise films, expect Jerry Maguire, Collateral, Top Gun: Maverick, and of course, Edge of Tomorrow, to make appearances. Damo even throws in Tropic Thunder, because who can forget Les Grossman? Then there's the philosophical stuff: How long was Cage actually in the time loop? (Answer: a hell of a long time). Was blackmailing the general really the best plan? (Debatable). And what's the real ending? (Whitey thinks it's Cruise's “now you're gonna bone me” smile).Oh, and voicemails are back! Listeners call in to rant about The Bodyguard, praise the pod's Whitney Houston renditions, and drop the occasional F-bomb. Classic Born to Watch fan energy.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Edge of Tomorrow Cruise's most underrated film? Would you waste 300 time loops trying to get with Emily Blunt? Did this movie deserve to flop—or is it a misunderstood masterpiece?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#BornToWatch #EdgeOfTomorrow #TomCruise #EmilyBlunt #MoviePodcast #SciFiMovies #DougLiman #TimeLoopMovies #LiveDieRepeat #FilmDiscussion #UnderratedGems #CinephileApproved

Join Greg Alba and John Humphrey as they dissect the high-octane 2012 film adaptation of Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise and brought to life by writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (famed for his work on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and The Usual Suspects). Based on Lee Child's bestselling thriller "One Shot," this action-packed mystery follows former Army investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise, celebrated for Top Gun and Mission: Impossible) as he unravels a web of deceit surrounding a seemingly random sniper attack. In addition to Cruise's magnetic portrayal of the stoic drifter, the film features standout performances by Rosamund Pike as Helen Rodin (known for Gone Girl and Die Another Day), whose sharp intellect and determination add layers to the investigation along with veteran actor Richard Jenkins (The Visitor, Step Brothers, The Way of Water), David Oyelowo (Selma, Interstella), Robert Duvall (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird), + a chilling turn from Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu The Vampire, Grizzly Man) as the Zec, & our FIRST exposure to Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad, Terminator: Genisys, Divergent). The movie is packed with memorable moments—from the tension-filled interrogation scenes to heart-stopping chase sequences and an unexpected twist that redefines the entire case. Greg and John break down every riveting detail, offering insights into the film's masterful blend of suspense, action, and mystery. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay celebrate Valentine's Day by talking about everyone's favorite rom-com of the 2010's, 'Gone Girl.' Bombay starts it off by recalling a time he dated a woman who became so upset with him that she threatened to "Gone Girl" him. Then the fellas discuss this elevated form of high trash art that opens like a rom-com, and turns into a brutal thriller that is a socio-commentary on relationship dynamics. The guys open with a debate about whether it's considered cheating if the mistress is as hot as Emily Ratajkowski, which leads to discussion about Ben Affleck's loveable "himbo" performance that helped remind the world that he is still a great actor. They also cover how Amy's brilliance at framing her husband is only overshadowed by her stupidity in the real world — why did she carry all that money on her person? Rosamund Pike's Amy may not be street savvy, but she is cold and vindictive, and the perfect character for David Fincher's detached aesthetics. This all adds to a perfectly degen Valentine's Day which will have you contemplating unspooling your lover's brains to see what they're thinking.

Dana and Tom with 5x Club guest, Peterson W. Hill (Co-Host of the War Starts at Midnight podcast) discuss La Dolce Vita (1960) for its 65th anniversary: written and directed by Frederico Fellini with Ennio Flaiano, Tullio Pinelli, Brunello Rondi, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, music by Nino Rota, cinematography by Otello Martelli, starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimee, and Yvonne Furneaux.Plot Summary: Set against the glamorous backdrop of Rome in the 1950s, La Dolce Vita follows Marcello Rubini, a jaded journalist, as he drifts through a series of decadent encounters over seven days and nights.Torn between the shallow allure of celebrity culture and his yearning for deeper meaning, Marcello is drawn into the chaotic lives of socialites, artists, and film stars. As he navigates lavish parties, fleeting romances, and existential crises, the film explores themes of decadence, disillusionment, and the search for purpose in a world consumed by hedonism. The film's iconic imagery, including Anita Ekberg's midnight wade in the Trevi Fountain, cements its status as a cinematic masterpiece and a poignant reflection on modern life.Guest:Peterson W. Dana and Tom with returning guest and 5x Club member, Peterson W. Hill (Co-Host of the War Starts at Midnight podcast), discuss The Shop Around the Corner (1940) for its 85th anniversary: directed by Ernst Lubitsch, written by Samson Raphaelson and Ben Hecht, music by Werner Heymann, starring James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan, and Frank Morgan.Plot Summary: "The Shop Around the Corner" is a charming romantic comedy set in a Budapest gift shop. The story revolves around the antagonistic relationship between the store's manager, Alfred Kralik (James Stewart), and his co-worker, Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan).Unbeknownst to each other, they are anonymous pen pals who have fallen in love through their letter exchanges. When they finally meet in person, their identities come to light, leading to a delightful resolution filled with warmth and humor. It's a delightful tale of mistaken identities, charming misunderstandings, and the magic of love letters.Guest:Peterson W. Show Notes This week we watch Bong Joon-Ho's dystopian masterpiece – no not that one, the other one – Snowpiercer. Chris Evans doesn't want to be a hero, and can he truly be if he know what people taste like? We argue yes, when the villain is capitalism, any man can be a hero. Tilda Swinton puts in a grounded and naturalistic performance (her words) and Allison Pill is just a delight while Kang-ho Song plays his normal hilarious druggie. Bong has an innate ability to entertain and make you laugh while spotlighting the horrors of society. This movie rocks and you need to watch it.   Recommendations: The Straight Story (Disney+) and The Elephant Man (available in physical format only)   Next up: Gone Girl (2014) (Hulu)     Email us at latecomers@gmail.com Find Amity @ www.amityarmstrong.com Our Facebook group is here for those who consent: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1754020081574479/
