In this episode, we dig into one of the most dramatic scandals of Shakespeare's time: the rise and catastrophic fall of Robert Devereaux, the Earl of Essex. Court favorite, military hero, and ultimately, traitor, Essex had everything and managed to lose it spectacularly. We break down who Essex was, his relationship with Elizabeth, and what finally led him to march on London with a small bnad of followers and an extremely bad plan. And of course, we're a Shakespeare podcast, so we touch on the wild connection between Essex's Rebellion and Shakespeare. Quantum entanglement? Time traveling information? What is behind the phenomenon of precognitive dreaming? Meet astrophysicist, oneironaut, and author Paul Kalas, who argues that precognition is naturally selected for because of its unmistakable evolutionary advantage. Paul Kalas explains that precognitive dreams are dreams that appear to contain information about future events. Paul introduces the concept of the “Oneironaut” (a dream traveler) and draws from his personal archive of more than 300 recorded precognitive dreams. The discussion spans personal anecdotes, neuroscience, evolutionary theory, and physics—particularly quantum mechanics and the many‑worlds interpretation. Kalas describes how some dreams feel “unmistakably precognitive” due to the sense of surprise and improbability felt within the dream and shares a childhood dream involving an unusual phrase that was later spoken verbatim, and a detailed dream sketch that matched a real astronomical discovery nine years later (the offset debris disk around the star Fomalhaut). The episode also explores the possible evolutionary value of precognition, suggesting dreams may “prime” individuals for future learning or decision‑making. Kalas proposes that information may travel backward in time—from future selves to past selves—rather than consciousness traveling forward. The conversation touches on déjà vu as a possible memory of forgotten dreams, the importance of novel environments, and practical advice for cultivating dream recall through journaling. Finally, the discussion turns to the future: how large‑scale dream recording, AI analysis, and neuroscience might one day allow collective patterns in dreams to be identified, potentially offering early insight into future events. 00:00 – Welcome & Can Dreams Really Predict the Future? Katherine Bell opens the show and introduces astronomer Paul Kalas and the topic of precognitive dreaming. 05:00 – So… What Is a Precognitive Dream? What makes some dreams feel different — vivid, specific, and strangely tied to future events and evoking a sense of curiosity even within the dream. 10:00 – A Dream Phrase That Came True Paul shares a childhood dream involving a bizarre phrase that later appeared in real life. 15:00 – Déjà Vu: Have You Dreamed This Before? How déjà vu may come from forgotten dreams — why some moments feel uncannily familiar. 20:00 – Why Would Humans Have Precognitive Dreams? Exploring evolution, learning, and how future information might quietly guide us. 25:00 – When a Dream Matches a Scientific Discovery A remarkable story of a dream sketch that later matched an astronomical breakthrough. 30:00 – Time Travel, Parallel Lives, and Changing Outcomes Could information flow backward in time? A deep dive into many‑worlds and alternate timelines. 35:00 – Listener Question: Is This All Just Interpretation? An audience question sparks discussion about science, skepticism, and testable ideas. 40:00 – AI, Brain Science, and Reading Dreams What neuroscience and artificial intelligence might reveal about dreams — and the future. 48:00 – How to Work With Your Own Dreams + Final Thoughts Practical advice on dream journaling, recognizing meaningful dreams, and closing reflections. AI, Brain Recording, and the Future of Dream Research (00:50:53) BIO: Dr. Paul Kalas is an accomplished astronomer at UC Berkeley who searches for undiscovered planets among the billions of stars in our galaxy. In his book The Oneironauts he documents more than 300 precognitive dreams, explores alternate explanations, describes connections to neuroscience, physics, and evolution, discusses the significance for the individual, and foretells the future impact on humanity. We live in a time where no one is ever fully gone. Old chats. Saved voice notes. “Last seen.” Archived messages. Technology has made it possible to revisit people long after they've left our lives. But is that helping us heal — or keeping us stuck? In this episode of After 30, we talk about grief in the age of AI, digital attachment, and the illusion of control. What does it mean to hold on to someone through data? If you could talk to them one last time, would you? And who do you become when you finally choose to let go? This is a conversation about modern love, digital ghosts, and the quiet maturity of surrender. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In March of 2015, Denise Huskins was kidnapped, drugged, sexually assaulted, and held for 48 hours. When she was released, police called it a hoax and demanded that she apologize for wasting resources. The media dubbed it the "Gone Girl" case and death threats started flooding in. Except it wasn't a hoax at all. It was a Harvard-educated serial rapist named Matthew Muller who'd been terrorizing California for years. In this episode, we'll go through the kidnapping, the police misconduct that revictimized the survivors, Detective Misty Carausu's brilliant investigative work that finally caught Muller, and how Denise and Aaron turned trauma into national advocacy. We are the dreams of our ancestors; we are their hopes for the future. But sometimes their trauma is transmitted to us through nightmares. Today’s guest, Dream Journal regular Linda Schiller, will be talking about how to heal that intergenerational pain and focus on the gifts of ancestral connection. Linda talks about her own ancestors and how her grandfather, who she called Grandpa Joey, fled Kiev with his family at age of three because of the pogroms and how making borscht soup always helped her feel more connected to that side of her family. We talk about the trauma that we inherit from our ancestors but also the caring and resilience. Linda also talks about synchronicity, public trauma vs private trauma, drawing up a family tree, and dream incubation. After the break, we explore a dream of Katherine’s about doing numerical computations like she used to during her NASA career and about why she might be having this dream now over 20 years after leaving that position. Dreams bring us back to our true self. Today's guest, Dr. Bonnie Buckner, speaks about the visual language of dreams which awakens in us feelings which are the base of our inner knowing. Dreaming also reminds us of wonder and mystery. By embracing mystery, we discover more of our own potentials and possibilities of transformation in the outer world. Bonnie starts by describing some of the competing pulls we have including the desire to fit in vs the desire for connection. She says our true self is often crowded out by thinking, but that dreams bring us back to a visual and feeling-based language. After the break, we take a question from Stacy from Canyon Lake Texas who shares a dream about filming a waterfall and NOT filming a topless woman. We also take a question from Max which starts a conversation about how to bring wonder into our daily experience. Shawn Fichter, CEO and Head of Product at Legacy Data Access, believes that archived clinical, financial, and operational data represents an untapped resource for health systems. However, access to legacy data must be done in a way that doesn't increase the risk of a breach. The balance between these needs – along with the financial and operational benefits of archiving legacy applications – is at the core of our discussion with Fichter at the AHIMA conference.Listen and subscribe to the Healthcare IT TodayHealthcare IT Community: https://www.healthcareittoday.com/
Does a traumatic childhood doom you to unhappiness and dysfunction? Meet Wendy Correa who overcame a horrific youth. Dreams were a key part of her recovery! Wendy’s debut book is memoir My Pretty Baby: Seeking Truth and Finding Healing. Wendy starts with a pivotal dream of a black jaguar which had her face then talks about how childhood trauma affects life-long mental health including addiction, depression, and even physical ailments like irritable bowel syndrome and heart disease. She says that 64% of people have experienced at least one of the ten traumas highlighted by the “ACE” scale which lists Adverse Childhood Experiences. She encourages listeners to google the ACEs quiz to start thinking about how trauma might be informing our own lives. She describes some of the modalities that were healing for her including meditation, psychotherapy, music, somatic practices saying “the issues are in the tissues.” Wendy describes the work by Bessel van der Kolk and his seminal book “The Body Keeps the Score.” After the break we talk about the dangers of toxic positivity and the art of learning “to suffer well” of which a pivotal component is forgiveness. She also mentions Whitney Goodman and Joan Didion. Here is a link to a short video clip of the conversation: The Full-Length video can be found here: BIO: Wendy B. How to really enjoy your dreams. Today Katherine speaks with Stuart Bailey, a British lawyer who has met Queen Elizabeth and sung with Elvis. His book is My Secret Life of Dreams: One Man’s Journey Into the Hidden World of Night. He says dreams are like movies starring ourselves so why not enjoy them? Stuart starts by talking about his recurring childhood dream of flying down beautiful valleys, some of which date from before age 3 and a half. He speaks about how he might start to sink in those dreams but learned that by relaxing, he could keep flying. We also talk about precognitive dreams, deja vu, and an easy way to eliminate nightmares by daydreaming a better ending, his own version of Image Rehearsal Therapy. Here is a link to a short video clip of the conversation: https://youtu.be/hP5GXhtnEVg BIO: Stuart Bailey is a lawyer from the Lake District, United Kingdom, and lives with his wife and two teenage sons. He is the author of My Secret Life of Dreams which explores how the dreams we have at night can guide, heal, and gently shape our lives. Her application was impressive. Almost intimidatingly so. Fifteen courses completed on SEO, email marketing, course creation, Pinterest strategy, Facebook ads, webinar funnels. Two high-ticket coaching programs. Certifications in digital marketing. Her website was beautiful. Professionally designed, strategically structured. And then this line: "I've made maybe $2,000 total from my blog in three years. Most months I make nothing. I know everything I'm supposed to do but I can't seem to actually do it consistently. I think I might be broken."She wasn't broken. She was overeducated and underexecuting. And that combination, it turns out, is one of the most expensive ways to stay stuck. If the previous episode, "From 43 Email Subscribers to Her First $2,000 Blog Launch," was for the determined beginner who doesn't know where to start, this episode is for the opposite. For the blogger who's started a hundred times. Who's learned everything. Who could write the blogging course herself but somehow can't build the business. This is the story of what happened when she finally stopped learning and started building. In this episode:Where she started: → 15 blogging courses completed over three years → $12,000 spent on courses, coaching programs, and educational resources → Beautiful website, strategic structure, compelling copy → $2,000 total blog income in three years (most months: $0) → Six half-finished digital product ideas, none for sale → Email sequences started five times, never finished past email three → Convinced she was fundamentally brokenThe pattern that was keeping her broke: → Monday: Fresh goals, new optimism, plans to finally finish the email sequence → Tuesday: New strategy catches her attention, seems better than current approach → Wednesday: Deep in a YouTube rabbit hole about the new thing, taking notes → Friday: Nothing finished, familiar guilt and confusion → Repeat for three yearsWhy knowledge was actually her problem: → 15 different email templates from 15 courses competing in her head every time she wrote → 17 different content strategies making every blog post feel impossibly complex → Paralyzed by options because she could see all the ways everything could be done → Learning had become a sophisticated self-protection mechanism against the vulnerability of executionWhat we did together:The first decision: "You need to stop learning. Completely. For at least three months."The triage: → Audited everything she had: half-finished products, abandoned systems, scattered ideas → Cut six potential offers down to one → Archived three years of "someday" content ideas → Stripped the business to essentials: one lead magnet, one welcome sequence, one offer, one traffic sourceThe building: → Sales page written in 4 hours (she'd been stuck on it for over a year) → 6-email launch sequence created and polished → Funnel fixed and connected so everything actually worked as a system → Complete system built in 6 weeks (she'd been trying for 3 years)The launch: → First sale: 4 hours after pressing send → By end of launch week: 14 sales at $147 = $2,058 → More revenue in one week than the previous three years combinedHer words:"I've been preparing for this for three years. Three years of learning how to do this exact thing. And it took six weeks of actually building with you to make it happen. All that time, I thought I needed to know more. I didn't need to know more. I needed to do more. But I couldn't do more alone.""I finally understand what I was doing wrong. I thought the problem was that I hadn't found the right strategy yet. But there is no perfect approach. There are just approaches that work when you actually execute them. The strategy I'm using now isn't...

Time is flying by so fast—it's hard to believe. “Only one life, 'twill soon be past; only what's done for Christ will last.” As Hank reflects on another year, a phrase has been echoing through his mind: “You will be the same person next year as you are right now except for two things—the people you meet and the books you read.” Hank would add a third: the things you memorize. Some of the greatest breakthroughs Hank has ever experienced have come directly from reading. Both in America and abroad, reading is in decline across the board. That's the bad news. The good news? You can get hooked on reading today. We live in a moment when truth is being assaulted from every side. We also mention quite a few episodes, including one on Kimi (focus). Learn how dreams help us process trauma with our guest Gdansk Professor Wojciech Owczarski who studies the dreams of Auschwitz survivors, modern Ukrainian refugees, and nursing home residents. He finds that dreams help us cope with trauma, adapt to new life situations, and feel optimistic for a better future. Nightmares help us deal with unresolved waking life issues and to integrate past traumas. A short clip from our conversation can be found here: After the break we take two calls. One from Kathy from Corona CA who is wondering about how best to introduce new members into her long-running group. The second call is from Ryan from Maryland who asks whether the prisoners at Auschwitz ever had revenge dreams. BIO. Wojciech Owczarski, PhD, is a professor of humanities and teaches literature and cultural studies at the University of Gdansk, Poland. He is the author of seven monographs on dreams and on literature. The most recent one is devoted to the dreams of the prisoners of the Auschwitz concentration camp and is called Dreaming in Auschwitz. https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-9040-3 This show, episode number 339, was recorded during a live broadcast on November 29, 2025 at KSQD.org, community radio of Santa Cruz. While he may have been called a demagogue and a counterfeit Mussolini, Huey Long had some darn tootin' good ideas—mainly taxing the rich into oblivion. Strange Country cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about Long's rise to populist power in the 1930s and the corruption in its wake, but also how much a 65% tax increase on the rich makes a whole lotta sense. Like Long said "We only propose that, when one man gets more than he and his children and children's children can spend or use in their lifetimes, that then we shall say that such person has his share. That means that a few million dollars is the limit to what any one man can own." Theme music: Big White Lie by A Cast of Thousands Cite your sources: Burns, Ken, director. Huey Long. PBS, 1985. There are many ways to open the door to the unseen world: sound or singing, stillness, or movement, nature immersion. We speak to Rachel Schafer about dreaming into love. Rachel speaks about body centered awareness and the value in turning toward what is uncomfortable in our lives. Video short from this show: https://youtu.be/QjkTV5d94II She talks about her journey with sleep paralysis and how she used the expression of sound to get out of it. She speaks of the Toltec practice of Dreaming Awake and of her difficult experiences with abusive male teachers. She speaks of the feminine experience and what she calls womb dreaming, and about how looking for others to fill the holes within ourselves can lead to abusive behavior. After the break, we take a call from Kathy from Corona, CA, who talks about her long-running dream group, speaks about how valuable it has been, and issues an open invitation for people to apply to join them. Rachel ends by telling about her offerings including Dream Dancing on Friday evenings and a nine-month program for women. Contact Rachel for more information. BIO: Coming from a diverse background immersed in spiritual training, motherhood, and health challenges, Rachel Schafer mentors those who are desiring a deeper connection with their dreams and bodies by guiding them as they walk through the shadow essence of their wounds and into the clarity of their unimagined lives. In the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination, Hank Hanegraaff would like to propose an all too relevant question: “Is Mormonism Christian?” Why? Because a prevalent narrative surrounding the assassination of Charlie Kirk in Orem Utah, is that Tyler Robinson, Kirk's alleged assassin, grew up in a good conservative Christian family. In truth, Tyler Robinson was raised in a Mormon family—and Mormonism is hardly Christian. As such, Hanegraaff believes this to be as good a time as any to equip listeners to delineate the differences between Mormonism and Christianity so that we can all be prepared to properly discern and discuss the doctrinal distinctives and the truth regarding what is–and is not–authentic Christianity.
