In today's Cloud Wars Minute, I examine why Google Cloud's explosive growth is redefining the competitive landscape ahead of Microsoft and AWS earnings. Highlights 00:03 —We have earnings results coming up later this week from both Microsoft and AWS. Microsoft on July 29, and AWS on July 30. So, that'll give us some nice comparisons to the stunning Q2 that Google Cloud reported last week. Google Cloud will be outgrowing AWS by somewhere between two and a half times at the high end, and at least two times on the low end. 01:02 — Over the last several quarters, Jassy has alluded to Google Cloud, not by name on earnings calls, but he said, "We've got some companies throwing up these fancy high growth rates." What we see with these growth rates is the customers expressing their vote. They are the ultimate arbiters in this decision about who's the hottest company. That's expressed in growth rates. 02:23 — I'm comparing Q2 here for Google Cloud versus Q1 for AWS because, right now, the Q2 numbers aren't out yet. AWS grew at 28%. Google Cloud grew 82%. Say AWS reports this massive acceleration to 40%. They would still be outgrown by Google Cloud by 2X. My guess is AWS's growth rate will come in somewhere around 30% or 31%. 03:22 — It is becoming a little tiresome for these bigger companies to say, "We're bigger than them. Of course, they have a higher growth rate." The customers are voting here. These growth rate disparities are so important because they tell us how the different vendors are doing in the marketplace through the eyes and wallets of customers. 04:01 — In the Cloud Wars, the customers are always, always the big winners. Microsoft and AWS are growing their cloud businesses in the range of 30%, which is astonishing. But Google Cloud posted 82% revenue growth and backlog growth of almost 400% to over $500 billion. By the numbers, Google Cloud is the king of the hill right now. Visit Cloud Wars for more.

Send us Fan MailReboots are risky, indie horror is thriving, and somehow we end up arguing about whether you'd survive a bear-sized pigeon. We start with a few unhinged warm-ups, then get real about the King Of The Hill revival: what still feels like Hank Hill, what changes actually work, and why voice actor swaps can instantly snap you out of the story. If you care about legacy animated sitcoms, nostalgia TV, or whether a reboot can age characters without losing its soul, we've got plenty to say. Then we pivot into two indie horror standouts and why smaller movies can hit harder than glossy blockbusters. We dig into Obsession, the creepy “wish” device that drives the plot, the lead's fast switches between charm and menace, and how smart lighting lets your imagination do the scariest work. Backrooms takes us into creepypasta territory, where liminal office spaces, internet lore, and slow-building dread turn a simple idea into a full-on fandom machine. After that, it's a grab bag of pop culture and real life: Toy Story 5 and the tension between toys and screens, dad stories from the grocery aisle, a debate over Stephen King's The Long Walk, and a deep dive on Dungeon Crawler Carl as a litRPG audiobook phenomenon. We talk Jeff Hays' narration, why loot-box pacing is addictive, and what a Peacock adaptation needs to get right to survive diehard fans. Wrap it all up with quick hits on Lanterns, Neuromancer on Apple TV, and the Insomniac Wolverine game's gnarly damage tech.Subscribe for more, share this with a friend who loves reboots or horror, and leave a review. I recently sat down with Emmy-winning comedy writer Brent Forrester, whose credits include The Simpsons, The Office, King of the Hill, Judd Apatow's Love AND Mr. Show with Bob and David. We discussed his path from a television-free childhood reading Mad magazine to breaking into the industry under the mentorship of The Golden Girls creator Susan Harris. Brent shared how he taught himself the mechanics of television writing by breaking down the exact structures of sketches and scripts that made him laugh. We also talked about the realities of navigating a career in the entertainment industry and how building a small team or writing group can help writers manage the uncertainty of freelance work. Brent is currently bypassing the traditional network development system to focus on self-produced, independent material. He recently launched a YouTube channel under his teaching nickname, Professor BFo, where he premiered his self-funded, micro-budget workplace comedy series, Historic Freedomburg. Alongside releasing his own creative projects, Brent runs writing seminars designed to teach upcoming artists how to write, shoot, and distribute their own work without relying on corporate backing. You can check out his new series on YouTube and find information on his upcoming comedy classes at BrentForrester.com. ---Episode Links:BrentForrester.comYouTube: ProfessorBFoTikTok: brentforrestercomedyIG: @forrestercomedycourse

Stephen Soderberg's third movie is the marquee release this week, King of the Hill (1993), an adaptation of A.E. Hotchner's memoir of being poor in Depression-era St. Louis. Also slid in here is Soderberg's fourth movie, The Underneath (1995), a remake of the Robert Siodmak's 1949 noir Criss Cross. Accompanying each is an introduction from Soderberg about how much he loathes the films, which makes it hard to like them ourselves -- though The Underneath is certainly the worse film. Ultimately we spend a lot of time wondering why Criterion bothered to put these out, particularly together, and I think came to a satisfying if bleak answer.
I'm looking forward to things in July and August and here's where I tell you about them. King of the Hill! Futurama! The Dink! Batman AND Spider-Man? In this economy?!?

What's an omnibus? What's an archer? This week's program kicks off with the theme to BBC Radio 4's The Archers Omnibus, a song that pumps up Kerry and Barry at the start of every week. The Archers, which is celebrating it's 75th anniversary this year, also happens to be the longest running serial in the world. This radio drama which takes place in rural England has become routine listening for Kerry and Barry the last couple years. They comment on the show's impressive sound design, how it tackles issues such as race and class, and how the plotlines mirror real life. Though Kerry has always loved TV, radio dramas like this appeal to her these days with her vision lessening because they give her brain a break from the visual stimuli. We wrap up this mixed bag month discussing the varying quality of audio description out there. Brian comments on the AD for Running Point as voiced by friend Nefertiti Matos Olivares comparing it to that of the new King of the Hill season. This is an excellent example demonstrating how important it is to blend into a show as an audio describer, without trying to sound like your own character. We also put out a call for donations to The Pacific Training Centre for the Blind as unfortunately a grant they rely on wasn't approved this year. We've spoke of them on this show a lot, outlining how essential centres like this are where blind people share their lived experience with other blind people to help with independent living. Donate here: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/blindstewards/ To finish off, we hop back on The Archers Omnibus and head to the Academic Archers Conference in Birmingham. Kerry and Barry had been planning to go to this for months and as luck would have it, they were sick, but still took the trek. They share about accessibility including the cab driver walking them for 5 minutes into the airport as there was no accessible drop off close to it. Workers from the hotel they stayed at offered to guide them to the conference centre during the weekend event. There were volunteers at the conference that helped them with the food as a buffet lunch isn't the most convenient for blind people. They share about the papers and panels presented. One of the actors from the show, Ryan Kelly, who also happens to be blind was there. Another great example of representation, a blind person playing a character in a show that isn't blind. They briefly got to meet him, though the exchange was awkward, showing just because someone is also blind it doesn't mean we immediately connect with them. Though Barry also met an attendee who is blind and they had much more time to chat as they were at the same table during the banquet while Ryan Kelly was on his way out. And the big highlight for them was sitting in a giant meeting room with everyone at the conference on the Sunday morning, listening live to The Archers Omnibus together. This was a one-of-a-kind, shared experience with all of the show's quirky and nerdy fans.
