Driven to inspire other people with art, Brandon Victor Dixon has been sharing his talent with the world for decades now. And this month, the actor slash theatrical producer is part of the much-anticipated world premiere of the award-winning "MacGyver: The Musical's" album which will be released on January 27th. Apart from theatre, Brandon is also doing advocacy work. He talks about the We Are Foundation which he created, and how he uses it to bridge gaps between art and us as communities. He brings up a good point on human behavior, what makes it for some people to be kind, and how art can be a gateway to understanding and helping them. In choosing a role or a piece, he considers the tools that can make his role and the exchange between him and the audience the most effective. He adds that the pieces choose him and come into his life at a time when he needs them the most. When he was just starting, Brandon had to pause his graduation to go on a national tour, come back, finish school, and then originate a role on Broadway for which he got a Tony nomination. He recalls his audition process for the role of Simba, why he thinks he shouldn't have been cast, and how he overcame his doubts and the challenges he encountered as it was happening. As one of the stars in the world premiere album of “MacGyver: The Musical”, Brandon talks about his character, doing comedy, and how his process usually adapts to the show his doing. Brandon reflects on his role as Haywood Patterson in “The Scottsboro Boys”, why he considers it his favorite role, and how it ultimately goes back to his advocacy: to change and help people with the power of art. Brandon Victor Dixon is an actor, singer, advocate, and theatrical producer known for his Tony Award-nominated Broadway performances as Harpo in the 2005 musical "The Color Purple" and Eubie Blake in "Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed". Apart from originating both roles, he also originated the leading role of Berry Gordy Jr. in Broadway's "Motown: The Musical", which earned a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. In 2016, Brandon assumed the role of Aaron Burr in the Broadway company of "Hamilton". He also played the role of Hayward Patterson in "The Scottsboro Boys" both Off-Broadway and in London's West End, and was nominated for a 2014 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. As a producer, his credits include Broadway revivals of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch which won the 2014 Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for best revival of a musical, and "Of Mice and Men". In 2018, he played Judas in NBC's live concert version of Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice's rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" where he received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. His other stage credits include "Chicago", "The Lion King", "The Color Purple", "Rent", and "Shuffle Along" among others. His tv credits include "Power", "She's Gotta Have It", "Modern Love", and "The Best Man: The Final Chapters". What's up with Cloris Leachman and a $5,000 shopping spree in Chicago? That was one question I had for the eight-time Primetime Emmy Award winner. Her 22 nominations made her the most nominated, along with Julie Dreyfus, in Emmy history. She was in many films including “The Last Picture Show” and appeared as Frau blucher in “Young Frankenstein.” Cloris was probably best known on television for playing Phyllis Lindstrom on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”  Other TV show credits include: “The Facts of Life,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “The Office” and many TV movies and miniseries. In 2008, Cloris was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars,” paired with Corky Ballas, father of champion Mark Ballas. She was the oldest to appear on the show and placed seventh in the competition.

It's Jane Fonda y'all!  Jane stopped by Manny's right before the midterms to talk about this critical election. She knows, as we all know, that we are on the precipice of climate disaster. We are no longer just imagining how the world will look in a disrupted climate; we're seeing and feeling the reality of the climate crisis every single day as we witness and experience wildfires, heat waves, and floods destroying communities. In 2020, the fossil fuel industry poured $139 million into our elections – to politicians of both parties. This money has real consequences. Major solutions are stopped cold, like the Green New Deal, Build Back Better, clean energy investments, and initiatives to end billions in tax subsidies to the fossil fuel industry — all because of politicians backed by Big Oil. It's not too late to change our course. But it won't happen as long as oil, gas, and coal companies maintain their stranglehold on American politics. Earlier this year, she started the Jane Fonda Climate PAC to elect local, state, and federal leaders who will rise to the urgency of this moment and stand up to the fossil fuel industry. The PAC leverages the donations of those who are climate concerned to counter the outsized influence the fossil fuel industry has on our government. Jane wants politicians who support oil and gas to be as afraid for their jobs as we are about the impending climate disaster.About Jane FondaJane Seymour Fonda is a film and television icon, entrepreneur, and activist. Jane has earned two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, the Golden Lion Honorary Award, the Honorary Palme d'Or, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award. She has starred in dozens of films over 60 years including Barbarella; Klute; The Shoot Horses, Don't They; Coming Home; On Golden Pond; The China Syndrome; 9 to 5; Monster-In-Law; and The Morning After to name only a few. She has been a political activist her entire adult life, involved in multiple anti-war movements, the civil rights movement, in support of the Black Panthers, in the fight for LBGTQ rights, in feminist struggles, and now, in the fight of her life to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. Jane has been targeted and arrested for her activities throughout her life but remains committed to doing everything she can to fight for justice for all and to live joyfully while doing it.

The Fake Ass Book Club is back again!! This week the ladies review "Finding Me" a memoir by Viola Davis. Viola describes this book by saying, "Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self." The best kind of a love story!! Moni and Kat forged through moutains of vilolence, abuse, poverty and rats ( ewww rats!!) to uncover a beautiful story of reseilliance and self discovery! Enjoy! **Dedication: A special thanks to all the listerners. To all the people working hard each day and to @GANGGANG A cultural development firm open to creative collaborations that build equity based in Indianapolis for the "Butter" (butterartfair.com) art fair for adding color, light, and love to our city. Thanks for allowing us to be included in the day!! Show Notes: About the Author Viola Davis is an American actress and producer. The recipient of various accolades, including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Tony Awards, she is the only African-American to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting. *About the book: *Hardcover, Oprah's Book Club Edition, 304 pages Published April 26th 2022 by HarperOne Correction: Moni said Black Friday but meant Black Monday on Showtime: https://www.sho.com/black-monday (Great show if you like dark humor) THe Book of Mormon clip featured actor Andrew Rannells who was mentioned in Black Monday refenece. _ Quotes_ “Memories are immortal. They're deathless and precise. They have the power of giving you joy and perspective in hard times. Or, they can strangle you. Define you in a way that's based more in other people's tucked-up perceptions than truth.” “I am a dark-skinned woman. Culturally, there is a spoken and unspoken narrative rooted in Jim Crow. It tells us that dark-skinned women are simply not desirable. All the attributes that are attached to being a woman-desireable, vulnerable, needing to be rescued-don't apply to us. In the past we've been used as chattel, fodder for inhumane experimentation, and it has evolved into invisibility.” ― Viola Davis, Finding Me *Stranger than Fiction: * Follow up on Shinzo Abe Assassination: https://www.npr.org/2022/07/09/1110674313/japan-shinzo-abe-assassination-what-we-know KC pastor berates congregation over watch: https://nowthisnews.com/news/pastor-berates-broke-congregation-for-neglecting-to-buy-him-a-luxury-watch Warning: Adult Content & Language, please be advised this show is for adults 18 and up and the open minded. Season 7 continues to bring phenomenal guests and conversations.  We have an incredible guest on this episode, whom we “met” at a live comedy show in Austin, TX.  She is bold and honest, unafraid to speak to injustices and is just damn funny. We are such big fans of Rita Brent and we are beyond excited that she is joining us today.  Listen to hear us talk about: How the places we live can cultivate (or hinder) our talents.  Using curse words: when are they necessary, and when do they detract from the value of the message?  Cancel culture: who gives who the power to cancel? Who is the author of this cancellation?  Being strategic in the internet age: everything we say can be used against us Disarming through humor - using comedy to shake opinions and resonate deeply  Greater popularity means greater responsibility. How should we use our platforms?  Why it is important to acknowledge and accept our fears, and not leave this earth with regrets.    More about the hilarious and brilliant Rita Brent” Rita Brent is a comedian, musician, and military veteran from Jackson, Mississippi. She discovered her love for music as a young girl performing in talent shows and southern Baptist churches as a drummer alongside her mother and singer-pianist, Angela. She credits her mother as the one who helped cultivate and support her talents. At age 18, she joined the 41st Army National Guard Band where she served for nine years and ended her time in service as a sergeant. Rita graduated from her beloved HBCU, Jackson State University, with a Bachelor's Degree in Mass and Speech Communication, and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.  After graduating from JSU she landed at Mississippi Public Broadcasting where she served as a Radio Host and Producer. In March 2013, Rita made a sharp turn and plunged into a career as a stand-up comedian. Since then, she's been featured on Kevin Hart's Hart of the City, TruTV's Laff Mobb's Laff Tracks, and Epix TV's Unprotected Sets. Rita has released three singles, “Kamala,” “Raised in the Sipp,” and “I Deserve to Be Alive”. She currently tours as a feature act with her mentors, Rickey Smiley and Cedric the Entertainer.
