To mark the Easter break, Fantasy/Animation crack open Rise of the Guardians (Peter Ramsey, 2012), the 2012 computer-animated film produced by DreamWorks Animation studio and a Hollywood blockbuster adapted from the children's book series by William Joyce. Something of a box-office failure and a film that prompted an $87 million loss for DreamWorks, Rise of the Guardians is, as Chris and Alex suggest, certainly a complex and uneven effort that nonetheless incorporates some intriguing animated elements as part of its tale of belief and wonder. Listen as they map the film's place as entry number 19 within the expanding DreamWorks canon and how it emerged at a crucial moment in their own corporate expansion; the characters of Jack Frost, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sandman, and Pitch Black as renditions of different types of animation; drawing, artistry, and the Frozen-esque spectacle of cryokinesis; and how Peter Ramsey's film narrativises the value of what it means for children to believe in fantasy. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

We all fall prey to power blindness." - Jamie Woolf In this episode, Ana Melikian sits down with Jamie Woolf, the first Director of Culture at Pixar Animation Studios, to delve into why good people often become bad bosses. Drawing from her TED Talk and rich experience with companies like Pixar and Google, Jamie explains the concept of "power blindness" that plagues many leaders once they rise to authority. Throughout their conversation, Ana and Jamie discuss how this loss of perspective can stifle creativity and innovation within organizations. They explore the essential need for leaders to maintain self-awareness, practice honest reflection, and foster environments where open dialogue and dissent are encouraged. Jamie shares insights from her own journey, shedding light on the importance of diverse perspectives in cultivating true innovation. The episode also touches on the role of artificial intelligence and its impact on leadership and creativity, with Jamie emphasizing the unique human skills of analytical thinking and emotional intelligence that AI cannot replicate. She stresses the importance of blending technology with the heart—just as she witnessed during her time at Pixar—to create magic in leadership and organizational culture. Let's dive in! David Howard's most visible credit is DreamWorks' major feature film, Galaxy Quest, the story and screenplay of which we discuss. He also has an arm's length of television and live theatre credits. But interestingly enough, this is not why he is on this podcast. This is why he is my guest. Galaxy Press is easily confused with Galaxy Quest, and I routinely hear the public at conventions tell their friends they are standing by the Galaxy Quest booth. So, David became an obvious great guest when the opportunity presented itself at the Life, the Universe and Everything Symposium in Provo, Utah. We discuss script writing, what works and what to avoid. But more to the purpose of this podcast, he is the author of a delightful YA fantasy called ‟Penumbra,” which we discuss in this interview.

Special Guest: Steven Puri https://www.thesukha.co/media Free giveaway https://www.paulieskaja.com/opt-in1 In this episode, I sit down with Steven Puri, founder and CEO of Sukha Co., a company dedicated to helping people improve focus and work-life balance. Steven takes us on a fascinating journey through his career—from interviewing newsmakers as a teenager to working as a junior software engineer, then breaking into the world of Hollywood visual effects. He shares behind-the-scenes stories from blockbuster films like Independence Day and Braveheart and his leadership experience at 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks, where he oversaw major franchises like Die Hard, Wolverine, Star Trek, and Transformers. We dive into the evolution of filmmaking, exploring how action sequences and CGI have changed storytelling. Steven reflects on the thrill of working with top-tier action writers and what he misses most about Hollywood—mainly the creative spark of original storytelling. But ultimately, he realized that working on endless sequels wasn't fulfilling. That's when he shifted gears to something more meaningful—helping people find clarity and productivity in their lives. Steven gets real about feeling overwhelmed and procrastinating, particularly in the mornings, and how he developed strategies to combat those struggles. His journey led him to build a focus-driven community and create the Sukha app, rooted in the Sanskrit concept of deep, fulfilling happiness. He shares how productivity isn't just about getting things done—it's about building a life filled with joy, connection, and purpose. We also talk about the power of serendipity and how success often comes from unexpected opportunities. Steven shares wisdom from his parents—what he calls “Cliffisms”—and how life lessons shape our choices and perspectives. Key Takeaways: Overwhelm and procrastination often come from a lack of clarity—getting clear on what you truly want is the first step. Serendipity plays a huge role in success; staying open to life's twists and turns can lead to amazing opportunities. Creativity thrives when the mind is engaged in something else—capture those fleeting ideas before they disappear! True productivity isn't about grinding harder—it's about building a life that allows for joy, connection, and meaning. We wrap things up with a lighthearted chat about Christmas traditions, favorite holiday movies (yes, Die Hard is one of them!), and, of course, chocolates. Tune in and discover how you can bring more focus, fulfillment, and serendipity into your life!
