The sub-Saharan country of Mali is in trouble. Once home to one of the history of Africa’s greatest empires, Today Mali is beset by Islamist terrorists, long-standing tribal conflicts, and a corrupt government recently overthrown in a military coup. Amb. Vicki Huddleston served in Mali more than a decade ago, but she still personally knows many of today’s significant players. She’ll suggest why Mali matters and what the US can do to help it.

Bush.After the US embassy in Havana was closed in 1961, relations between the two countries broke off. A thaw came in 1977, with the opening of a de facto embassy in Havana, the US Interests Section, where Huddleston would later serve. In her compelling memoir of a diplomat at work, she tells gripping stories of face-to-face encounters with Fidel Castro and the initiatives she undertook, like the transistor radios she furnished to ordinary Cubans. Ambassador Vicki Huddleson is a visiting fellow at Brookings Institution and a commentator for NBC Universal. She has served as chief of mission at the United States Interests Section in Havana, Cuba and as director and deputy director of Cuban Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Her talk, “Retrospect: U.S. and Cuban Relations,” was part of the University Libraries commemoration of the Cuban Revolution.
