Today I am excited to talk with three members of Youth United for Community Action, an organization based in East Palo Alto that has been fighting for community empowerment since 1994, when a small group of young people of color active in their communities came together to form YUCA—“a grassroots community organization created, led, and run by young people of color, the majority from low-income communities. It “provides a safe space for young people to empower[themselves] and work on environmental and social justice issues to establish positive systemic change through grassroots community organizing.”We talk about how YUCA chooses its causes, the way it interacts with the community, and the most pressing issues it is addressing today. We hear inspiring stories about how YUCA workers interact with people in the community in big and small ways, and how this work is giving them the political education needed for meaningful change. Larissa Perez is a junior in high school. She has lived in East Palo Alto for the majority of her life and is passionate about being able to help others and give back to her community. Through her involvement with YUCA, she has deepened her understanding of East Palo Alto's rich history while also developing the skills to become a strong leader and advocate for justice. Estefani Ruiz first joined Youth United for Community Action in August of 2022 and has climbed the pipeline ever since. She first started off as a core member and now finds herself in a Youth Organizer role. Estefani is extremely passionate about giving back to her community and learning new things. This is where her interest in housing and social justice issues first started. She has participated in outreach, community events, and city meetings. She hopes to continue this work as she moves into the next stage of her life by making connections of her prior knowledge to the new area she will find herself in this upcoming academic year.Filiberto “Fili” Zaragoza is one of the campaign organizers and Co-program director at Youth United for Community Action (YUCA) in East Palo Alto, where he grew up. Since joining YUCA in 2019 as a sophomore in high school and moving into a staff position in 2023, he's developed organizing skills while fighting for his community. Fili draws his passion for advocacy from witnessing social injustices in East Palo Alto and across the Bay Area. He plans to continue his education while building his career in community organizing.
Welcome to the second interview in our special mini series, Eco-Justice and Climate Action. Today our guest, Céleste Pepin, graduate of the Gender and Social Justice Studies Honours program at McGill University, joins Blane and Joe, to share their work: “Politics of Resilience-Building: Explorations of Community-Based Interventions in Trinidad and Tobago”. An inspiring researcher, Queen Elizabeth Scholar (2023) and student, Celeste shares their insights from working and living in a new environment, the impact of research “trends” like resilience on project planning, and the intersections of action research and feminist methodologies. Join us for an exciting conversation traversing the many aspects of action research and beyond.Céleste first shares how the opportunity to engage in action research came to be during their undergraduate degree, as well as the project beginnings [01:00]. This led to exploring the preparation and challenges of working in an unfamiliar environment [6:57], along with the tensions they encountered between international agency funding and local realities on the ground in Trinidad and Tobago [10:11]. Céleste also reflects on the role of the university and how institutional context shapes the way research is designed and conducted [17:16]. Together, we explore the surprising parallels between climate resiliency efforts in Montreal and Trinidad and Tobago [20:53], leading to a rich discussion about the responsibility of the Global North to learn climate adaptation strategies from the Global South [24:00]. This connects to a broader conversation about the links between feminist popular education and action research as complementary frameworks [26:31], before closing with key takeaways and lessons Céleste is carrying forward [29:41].Thank you Celeste for sharing your time and work with us.Thank you to our listeners for tuning in to this episode of the Action Research Podcast, created by Adam Stieglitz, Joe Levitan, Shikha Diwakar, Cory Legassic, and Vanessa Gold. Curator Alyssa Velazquez grew up with theater as her first form of community—a foundation that continues to shape her curatorial work. Her current exhibition at Center for Craft, Craft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft, explores how craft can add joy, distribute resources, and foster community among at-risk and marginalized people. Velazquez brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to her curatorial practice at Carnegie Museum of Art, pulling from past work in art preservation, acting, and scenic design. Alyssa teaches us that the act of making can form resource generation within communities that need life-affirming support, and that craft methodologies—from job training to art therapy to social enterprise—can be applied to create meaningful social change.Images and more from Alyssa Velazquez on our website!Special thanks to our sponsor! Families in rural areas of New York say it is increasingly difficult to find child care. According to a report from the Children's Agenda, seven rural counties in Western New York shows can be characterized as child care deserts, where there are more than three children under the age of five per licensed child care slot for children in that age group. Structural and funding issues are contributing to the challenges, and providers point to low child care educator pay as a critical factor in the availability of reliable care. So what can be done? Our guests discuss it: Pete Nabozny, director of policy for The Children's Agenda Rachel Bonsignore, executive director of Liftoff Western New York Kathleen Valley, executive board member for Praising Kids Child Care Center in Medina Taryn Moyle, child care resource center program manager for Community Action of Orleans and Genesee, Inc. Corruption is often discussed in relation to politics and big business, but for many South Africans it plays out in far more everyday moments, particularly on the roads and in routine interactions with law enforcement, where small acts of bribery can quietly become normalised. Feizel Mamdoo speaks to John Maytham about his new Johannesburg-based anti-corruption initiative that aims to challenge this culture from the ground up. The former anti-apartheid activist, film maker, and communications expert has launched the “I Don’t Bribe” campaign, encouraging motorists to take a visible stand against bribery and to commit to responsible, law-abiding behaviour. Built with in-kind support from a designer and donations from members of the public, the campaign includes a windscreen decal carrying a clear message to both motorists and officials, while also promoting road safety by discouraging drivers from using bribes to avoid accountability for traffic offences that could endanger lives. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. Can faith sustain courage and openness in a polarized democracy? Former Ohio governor and presidential candidate John Kasich reflects on faith, fear, character, and public life amid deep political polarization and religious tension in America.“There is a certain comfort in knowing you have somebody who's always in your corner.”In this conversation with Evan Rosa, Kasich reflects on personal faith shaped by tragedy, the search for purpose, and why character matters more than ideology in leadership. Together they discuss religious faith in American life, his experience running in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, voting on character over beliefs, firm political commitments, open-minded perspective taking, his vision of a life worth living, and before the end of this conversation, you'll find out his favorite Metallica song.Episode Highlights“There is a certain comfort in knowing you have somebody who's always in your corner.”“You can be firm while at the same time looking at a point of view of somebody who's diametrically opposed to you.”“I look for character. I don't look for what somebody thinks about the Book of Revelation.”“Faith informs the way I think about things, but it doesn't spell out what I'm going to do.”“If you begin to work together to solve a problem locally, it can actually create friendship.”About John KasichJohn Kasich is a former U.S. congressman, two-term governor of Ohio, and presidential candidate with more than four decades of experience in public service, media, and civic leadership. First elected to the Ohio State Senate at age 26, he later served 18 years in the U.S. House of Representatives before becoming governor in 2011. Kasich has authored six books exploring politics, faith, leadership, and civic responsibility, including his most recent, Heaven Help Us: How Faith Communities Inspire Hope, Strengthen Neighborhoods, and Build the Future. He is known for emphasizing character, dignity, and community-based solutions over ideological rigidity. Send us a textA new report on health and climate change paints the grimmest picture yet about what's going on – not just that 2024 was the hottest year on record, but evidence that many governments have stopped even pretending to try to do anything about it.The 2025 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change finds that more than half a million people die every year from heat-related causes, up 23 percent since the 1990s. Air pollution just from wildfire smoke was linked to 154,000 deaths in 2024. And 2.5 million people die every year because of the continued burning of fossil fuels, the report says. But Dr. Tafadzwa Mabhaudhi, Professor of Climate Change, Food Systems, and Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Director of the Lancet Countdown in Africa, says it's not all bad news. Communities, people acting in groups, city governments, and others can make a difference.“We do have the power,” says Tafadzwa, who joins One World, One Health host Maggie Fox in this episode to talk about the report and what he sees for the future.African nations, especially, have the opportunity to show the way as they build cities that take advantage of clean energy, says Tafadzwa, who is also a professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Future Africa, at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. The report finds hope in this trend, and estimates 160,000 lives are being saved annually as communities shift away from coal and enjoy cleaner air.Listen as Tafadzwa describes some of the successes in fighting climate change and what people and communities can do to encourage their governments to act.
What happens when the very programs meant to fight poverty are on the brink of disappearing? For Michelle James, Executive Director of the Community Action Agency of Western Connecticut (CAAWC), that question isn't hypothetical - it's her daily reality. This week on Mission CTRL, Ramon and Jorge sit down with Michelle to unpack the vital role of Community Action in our nation's social safety net. CAAWC helps individuals and families move toward self-sufficiency - offering a hand up, not just a handout. From heating assistance and food pantries to job readiness and ESL programs, Michelle and her team serve over a thousand people each month, connecting them with the resources they need to survive and thrive. But with federal funding for critical programs like the Community Services Block Grant and the Low-Income Heating Assistance Program “zeroed out” of the federal budget, the agency faces an uncertain future. Michelle opens up about the sleepless nights of running a nonprofit like a business - forecasting, adapting, and fighting for every dollar to keep her team and programs afloat. As CAAWC celebrates 60 years of service, Michelle reflects on resilience, reinvention, and what it truly means to lead through uncertainty. Whether you're a changemaker, community advocate, or entrepreneur navigating tough times, this episode is a masterclass in transformational leadership, persistence, and purpose.•••Find full episodes of Mission CTRL on Anchor, Apple Podcast, Spotify, and our website.Mission CTRL aims to ignite the innovative spirit inside us all through providing budding and successful entrepreneurs and community leaders with a platform to share their stories and inspire others. When one woman says “yes,” the ripple can reach across oceans. In this inspiring episode, Tracy sits down with Anne from Edinburgh, Scotland, whose life was forever changed by a simple invitation to host an awareness night. What followed was a 28-mile walk, over £10,000 raised, and a community awakened to the reality of human trafficking. Hear how Anne's obedience, courage, and community created a movement of prayer, action, and hope. Be inspired to cast your own stone and watch the ripples grow.Prayer resource mentioned: Disturb us, Lord, whenWe are too pleased with ourselves,When our dreams have come trueBecause we dreamed too little,When we arrived safelyBecause we sailed too close to the shore.Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,To venture on wilder seasWhere storms will show Your mastery;Where losing sight of land,We shall find the stars. Veda Austin is a water researcher, public speaker, artist, author, and mother who has spent the past 14 years exploring water's structural memory and responsiveness. She has pioneered a unique crystallographic method that visually captures water's reactions to stimuli, revealing its awareness of thought, intention, and creation through imagery.Veda believes that water is fluid intelligence, observing itself through every living organism on the planet and in the universe. Her primary focus is photographing water in its ‘state of creation'—the space between liquid and ice—where it expresses a profound and dynamic language. Through her research, public talks, and published works, she challenges conventional perspectives, inspiring a deeper understanding of water as an intelligent and communicative force.Episode Highlights▶ How water serves as both a powerful healer and communicator▶ Insights from Veda Austin's 14+ years of water research▶ The way water absorbs, stores, and shares information through light▶ What the freezing process reveals about water's hidden intelligence▶ The profound healing effects of natural alkaline water▶ How intention and consciousness can change the structure of water▶ The deep interconnectedness between people, the planet, and water▶ Why healing ourselves begins the process of healing the Earth▶ How prayer and positive focus can transform our relationship with water▶ The growing global movement recognizing water's spirit and rightsVeda Austin's Links & Resources▶ Website: www.vedaaustin.com▶ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vedaaustin_water/▶ Webinar: https://www.vedaaustin.com/workshops-webinars Download Beth's free trainings here: Clarity to Clients: Start & Grow a Transformational Coaching, Healing, Spiritual, or Psychedelic Business: https://bethaweinstein.com/grow-your-spiritual-businessIntegrating Psychedelics & Sacred Medicines Into Business: https://bethaweinstein.com/psychedelics-in-business▶ Beth's Coaching & Guidance: https://bethaweinstein.com/coaching ▶ Beth's Offerings & Courses: https://bethaweinstein.com/services▶ Instagram: @bethaweinstein ▶ FB: / bethw.nyc + bethweinsteinbiz ▶ Join the free Psychedelics & Purpose Community: / psychedelicsandsacredmedicines
