What happens when a love for art, culture and community transforms into a thriving boutique hospitality business in the hills above Rio de Janeiro? In this soulful episode of The Business of Glamping and Unique Holiday Rentals, I sit down with Dacia Young, a passionate Bed and Breakfast owner who left behind the familiar and followed a dream to Brazil's bohemian heart... Santa Teresa. We explore how her unique 13-room heritage property, expertly decorated with elegant art pieces, became more than just a guest stay… it became a reset space and a sanctuary for rest, reflection, and realignment. In this episode, we dive into: Why she chose a boutique, cultural model over the traditional tourist trail How her family-run Bed and Breakfast delivers that wow factor with local art, garden views and homemade breakfasts What inspired her to launch "Reset Retreats", and how they're helping guests slow down, reflect, and restore The power of hosting transformational experiences (and what guests really want from a retreat) What it's like to move abroad and start a business around a different pace of life If you've ever dreamt of running your business in a vibrant new country… or building a retreat that offers more than just a pretty view, this episode will leave you inspired, grounded and full of ideas. Vierhonderd Saartjes in Hotel Arena. Onze gast is journalist Mirjam Groen. Ever dreamed of owning your own private island? Mike Cossette did just that—with two friends—for only $60,000. In this episode, Mike shares the wild origin story of how a few drinks led to buying an undeveloped Florida island during the pandemic, and what they're doing to turn it into an asset. From navigating coastal environmental regulations to brainstorming glamping and storm-proof container homes, this is a story about unconventional real estate, creativity, and building value beyond the numbers.
This is just what Kristy hopes happens. But we do talk about all these things! And we also talk travel, learning about other religions, and self-reflection. Also, we bicker like sisters. It's hilarious.

The Campspot and Dyrt Awards just dropped, revealing what makes a top-tier campground in 2025. Meanwhile, Congaree National Park has banned RVs indefinitely, citing fragile ecosystems and infrastructure concerns. With millions of Americans planning RV trips this spring, is this the start of a bigger trend? Plus, the Yellowstone prequel 1923 unexpectedly taps into the rise of experiential hospitality. Meet Brian Linton—entrepreneur, brand builder, and now a rising force in boutique hospitality. From founding the sustainable apparel company United by Blue to transforming rundown motels into sought-after boutique stays, Brian has mastered the art of brand storytelling and customer experience. His hospitality journey started unexpectedly in 2020 when he and his wife purchased a neglected roadside motel in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. What began as a pandemic side project became The Rex, a high-design boutique retreat that quickly gained a cult following. From there, Brian expanded into new ventures—including Ferncrest, a glamping brand that's pioneering a fresh approach to hospitality franchising. In this episode, we dive into: How Brian went from selling jewelry out of his car to building a $20M apparel brand The unexpected pivot that led him from fashion to hospitality Why boutique motels and glamping are booming—and how social media plays a massive role The business of experience-driven stays: balancing high design with low-touch operations The future of Ferncrest and why he believes the glamping space is ripe for franchising Lessons from scaling a brand in multiple industries—what works, what doesn't, and what he'd do differently Brian is redefining what it means to build a hospitality brand in the modern era—where content, community, and commerce intersect. If you're fascinated by the future of boutique hotels, unique stays, and experiential travel, this conversation is one you won't want to miss. “Glamping” investments have slowly become massive money-makers in the real estate industry. What used to be someone setting up a tent and potentially a portable toilet for guests looking to get into nature has now become a full-blown luxury business that travelers will pay good money to get a taste of. One large glamping property allowed today's investor, Garrett Brown, to replace his music producer job and reach levels of success most short-term rental investors can only dream of. Garrett owns a ten-acre piece of land in a lake town outside Houston, Texas. Even though many non-Texans won't be familiar with the area, local travelers flock to it to escape the big city. Since buying the property, Garrett has made some serious expansions, such as building cabins (and even geo-domes) with WiFi, running water, and the creature comforts many of us don't want to live without. Plus, Garrett is doing it all while getting most of his bookings directly from social media. That's right, he has (mostly) cut out Airbnb and other middlemen booking platforms, so he keeps much more of the profit and even gets his guests to upgrade with “add-on packages” that make the deal even sweeter. You can do it, too, but you'll need to hear how Garrett does it in this episode! In This Episode We Cover: Why “glamping” has become such a popular (and profitable) version of short-term rental investing The “sixty-thirty-ten” rule that helps you identify the best areas for short-term rentals Leaving your career to build income streams that don't take up all of your time How to get seventy to eighty percent of your guest bookings through direct booking Why you should offer your guests “add-on packages” that help make YOU more revenue The reason you should “start small” when building out your glamping sites And So Much More!
