This plugin was created to save time training new WordPress users. (0:20) An email list was created from people who purchased the plugin. (0:25) Troy does not pitch to users that are not online because most people do not know what WordPress is.  He says that he has an online education and software company. (2:20) Online Education and Internet Marketing: Advanced education is becoming harder and harder to obtain. Online education is like a toddler with room to grow. (4:18) There are a lot of problems in the online education space. (4:29) Many online courses that are offered by a provider like Udemy have no quality control. (5:25) Many Internet Marketers have marketing funnels that collect the money for courses but do not have a way to see if the purchaser completed the course or program. (6:41) WPElevation has metrics that show if participants have completed their courses and continually offer support. (7:04) WPElevation has a 65% + completion rate and follows up with participants to make sure that they feel they got what they paid for. (8:46) Approaches to Internet Marketing: Some internet marketers are selling information about their content and not offering anything valuable. They are just selling courses up front to create revenue. (10:09) The constant launch is difficult to sustain. You need to continue to deliver value. (13:13) When Troy started with WPElevation five years ago, he gave things away (like a good business proposal) that brought value to freelancers and small business owners. (14:27) The pivot of the business happened when the community began to grow and Troy started scheduling on site 3-day seminars with face to face interaction. (16:05) There were many failures in the early Internet Marketing space. (16:31) Participants from the seminars have started to ask for the high-end Mastermind classes this year. (18:18) Focusing on Success: Troy has a list of people that support WPElevation with testimonials. (19:49) You cannot let limiting beliefs hold you back. Ignore anything that does not support your vision. (21:16) Know Your Why. Only buy stuff that helps you with your business. (22:32) Social Media can be very polarizing so if something comes through attacking you just ignore it. (24:04) 2700 people have been through the WPElevation program. (27:34) Sticking around and trying out different price points has lead to the most success. (29:13) There is not a fast track to success with acceptable margins just using memberships and videos. That is not easy. (31:05) Prices are going up as the value is increasing and opportunities are presenting themselves to a larger audience. (33:48) Staff and remote employees from the community are part of the daily business today.  So the “why” is now the business direction, not Troy Dean. (37:56) Strategic points for the business in 2018: YouTube videos are a strong focus to drive marketing channels. Silence is Golden is an entertaining way show people how to do stuff with WordPress that is published weekly.  (41:10) Every fortnight there is a highly produced how-to video. The latest videos were about how to produce things with the Elementor page builder. The next how-to videos will be produced with other strong products in the WordPress space. (43:04) Behind the scene videos which are raw and shot with a hand-held camera. (43:20) Currently looking at YouTube adds to drive traffic to your channels. (44:01) The next best thing to meeting in person is producing a video. (44:55) Video is hard and most people won't do it. (45:00) Video seems to be very successful with one unique personality recording. (47:10) YouTube is being used to show the authority of WPElevation in the WordPress space. (48:48) What is next for Troy Dean? Troy will continue with education and inspiration for small business where a person can be creative. (51:00) Travel more with family. (51:55) Troy has been asking the question what if exploring joy is just “it”? (52:00) Be a good father and dad. Episode #119 - Clever Copywriting and SEO with Kate Toon

Watch the video of this podcast here. Kate Toon has been working in the advertising world for almost 20 years, and she got her start in the digital era back in 1997. She’s worked with such notable clients as eHarmony, Curash, and Kmart; her first major digital job was creating Marks and Spencer’s e-commerce website which was one of the first online shops in the UK. Today she has evolved her expertise to SEO copywriting and consulting, and also offers SEO courses, memberships, conferences, and podcasts. Kate is the founder of The Clever Copywriting School and The Recipe for SEO Success eCourse, as well as co-host on the Hot Copy Podcast. She also just wrote her first business book and is now promoting it. In other words, she’s incredibly busy and productive! Because of her extensive experience and knowledge, I was excited to bring her on the show today. We talk about why it's important for you as a developer to create a solid SEO foundation for your clients and why you need to pay attention to copywriting, in general, for search engine ranking purposes. Kate says that content has always been important, but as it continues to play an ever-growing role as Google improves their algorithm for understanding the context of your content, and Google becomes better at crawling content to find out whether it's quality or not. The basic rule to remember for SEO is if you can bring in humans through good quality content then you'll please Google in the process. But if you're just starting out as a developer and SEO feels mysterious to you, what do you do to lay a proper SEO foundation for your clients? Kate has given us her top 5 considerations for a solid SEO foundation for your clients in 2017. But first, she says the most important thing you can do as a web developer is to understand your limits. Don't over-promise and under-deliver! Don't say you've delivered an SEO-friendly website unless you are 100% confident that the website you have completed is in fact SEO-friendly. Remember to be realistic about what you have done for your client. And that concept overarches these 5 points:1. Crawlability This is the foundation of all SEO. If Google can't crawl your site, then anything else you do won't matter. Google needs to crawl your site in order to index it properly and make it searchable. To make a site crawlable you need to use a plugin like Yoast or All In One SEO. And you need to do this so you generate a sitemap. She explains more about why sitemaps are important during our conversation.2. Speed We all feel the need for speed! Slow sites don't perform well. As more of us search from our mobiles this becomes even more critical. Kate says it's something like 60-65% of all searches are now done from mobiles rather than desktops. And mobile speed has to be even faster than desktop. A good benchmark is a small business site loading in about 1.5 seconds - that is what to aim for. To ensure the site is fast, test it after you build it. She loves Pingdom and GT Metrix for this because they will not only tell you how fast your site is, but also why it's slow (whether it’s giant images, big java scripts, etc).3. Responsiveness This term simply means that the website responds to the device in which you are viewing it - whether that is a mobile phone, tablets, iPads, desktops, etc. Kate loves the Divi theme but recommends that whatever you choose, test the responsiveness of the theme. Try it on a variety of devices and see if it works quickly and properly.4. Content For this step, you must decide where will you draw the line and when your responsibility stops for the site you have created. At a minimum, Kate says you need to add titles and meta descriptions for all the pages you create. Unless you understand SEO copywriting and keyword research, it's not your responsibility to draft those. But it is your responsibility to add the terms to all of your pages properly. It's equally important to find an SEO copywriter or content person you feel comfortable working with and refer your client to them. And it's also your duty to be sure your client knows where your SEO responsibility ends.5. Training and Maintenance Finally, don’t just give someone their site when you’re done! They will go away and break it without help from you. Be sure you give them an hour of WordPress training or refer them to a resource that offers training and support (like Video User Manuals or WP Elevation). Kate also recommends that you explain to your clients the importance of maintenance and regular updates. Maintenance is important for functionality of course, but also for SEO. Your client needs to know that if their site goes down repeatedly then Google will lower the site in its rankings. To address this issue you can put together a maintenance package for your clients that includes updating plugins, Google search console monitoring for broken links, etc, and adding more content for them. But if you don't want to do that then explain to them what they will need to do for ongoing maintenance, and let them know poorly maintained sites will be penalized by Google. To wrap up the show we recap those points, and Kate also explains why her experience and research has led her to focus on these 5 steps as being the key components to a website’s proper SEO foundation. You know how there are those people that when you talk with them initially you feel like you've known them forever? And then every time you talk with them you walk away with a smile on your face and know your day was made better because they were a part of it? Yea... that's Troy Dean. Oh... and besides being a great guy and ridiculously fun to talk with, he knows how to create and scale a profitable online business. Which is why I was super excited about talking with him about his latest venture, Rock Star Empires. Yep, a Course about Courses. Troy has plenty of experience (and more importantly data) on creating successful online courses. Many of you probably know Troy from WP Elevation (which started as on open-ended community/membership and shifted to a course) or Video User Manuals (a WordPress plugin that you can install in your site with step-by-step WordPress tutorials). Troy's focus these days is the online education space... and he explains how he transitioned into that (while keeping the other businesses running). And of course we had a ton of fun. WordPress Business – My Interview with Troy Dean WPCP: 039

I had the good fortune of being on the WP Elevation podcast a couple of months ago and after talking with Troy I KNEW I needed to get him on my show (which, FYI, the interview was recorded before 3.9 was released). I have to warn you though. There is a TON of information in this episode. Information that you can take and apply to your WordPress Business immediately. I love that Troy takes a business approach to WordPress (of course while loving it and working with it all the time). As someone who isn't a coder or programmer but has built a thriving business with WordPress I was thrilled to get Troy's insights and experiences on building a successful business with WordPress. From Voice Over artist and Musician to WordPress Like many other people with WordPress, Troy started building websites for friends and once he found WordPress he never looked back. He did a lot of client sites for people in his industry (voice over / music studios) and began his freelance design. He looked at his journey as a paid education and from day one approached it as a business and knew the key to growing his business is leverage. "One of my passions is leverage" - Troy Dean Building the platform for leverage. Troy knew something early on that took me a lot longer to learn... it's NOT cost effective to do little support jobs for clients. Which is what inspired him to create a 'user manual' for a client of hist (over 100 pages, printed and delivered  to his client, which allowed the client to manage their site and kept him free from niggly support calls). Video User Manuals is Born Realizing he created something that gave him massive leverage, Troy took his PDF to his friend and now business partner, who said "we need to turn this into a plugin". You'll hear how Troy and Bryan have built a team that keeps Video User Manuals up to date (in different accents even! AND.. it will shortly be launched in Spanish!). Building a Team I loved that Troy approached building a team from a perspective of value. Meaning, if he brought on more people to his team could he then provide more value to his audience? Would the team allow him more time to create content, connect with his audience and grow his business? Brilliant. WP Elevation WP Elevation was born out of necessity. For the audience. They asked their audience why they hadn't purchased the Video User Manuals and the answer they got was overwhelming. "We don't have enough clients! How do we get more clients?" You're going to have to listen to how they approached the launch of this, met the demand and their business blew up. I don't want to give too much away (truly, the interview is great!). They launched WP Elevation to a limited number of people, closed it for a couple months, got their systems in place and re-opened the doors. And haven't looked back since. Make sure to check out WP Elevation, Video User Manuals and connect with Troy, you won't be disappointed.   In Episode 8 of the WP Elevation podcast I spoke with Shawn Hesketh from WP101. “What?” I hear you ask. “Isn’t he a competitor of the Video User Manuals plugin” I hear you continue to protest, befuddled. Well yes he is. He is also a genuinely awesome dude and we happen to get along very well, so we spoke about WordPress, being in the education business and building communities. I interviewed Shawn while I was in the Netherlands attending WordCamp Europe and I got the episode number wrong. This is actually episode #8, not #7 as I say at the start of the interview. You can reach out and thank Shawn at WP101. Shawn suggested I interview Bill Erickson. Bill, I’m coming to get you.
