In this edition of What Went Wrong, I got a chance to explore mistakes, missteps, and the humbling reality that even seasoned pros can land flat on their face with repeat guest Robin Waite. This time, he didn't come with a polished pitch or a shiny success story. He brought a cautionary tale about Facebook ads, cold leads, and a £9,000 lesson in what happens when you trust the algorithm more than your instincts. Key Points from the Conversation with Robin Waite Even Experts Trip Up Robin isn't new to marketing—he ran an agency for 12 years. But when it came to Facebook ads for his own coaching business, he got caught in the allure of automation and scale. What started strong eventually crashed, all because the warm audience he'd been nurturing for years dried up. Your Audience Isn't Infinite Facebook ads worked—until they didn't. The moment his familiar, friendly audience was exhausted, the leads stopped flowing. Robin kept the campaign running for three more months, hoping it would fix itself. It didn't. Turns out, if you don't refill your marketing funnel, it doesn't matter how clever your copy or shiny your creative. Know Enough to Stay Dangerous Robin outsourced the nitty-gritty to so-called ad experts, trusting they'd fix the problem. But no one could explain what was going wrong. That blind spot cost him. The lesson? You don't need to be the expert, but you need to know enough to ask the right questions. When in Doubt, Go Back to What Works With his budget blown and confidence shaken, Robin went back to basics—his podcast, speaking gigs, and book. Instead of chasing cold leads, he rebuilt slowly by focusing on brand-building and trust, knowing that meaningful connections take time. Marketing is Just One Big Science Fair Like any good experiment, sometimes things blow up. And that's okay. Robin reminded us that failure is part of the formula—especially in marketing. The trick is not to avoid mistakes, but to make better ones next time. Takeaways for Business Owners Warm audiences are wonderful—but they won't last forever. Always be adding new people to the top of your funnel. Facebook ads can be powerful—but only if you understand the mechanics. Don't hand over your entire budget without oversight. Track what's working, and don't be afraid to pivot. If your gut says something's off, it probably is. When the fancy stuff fails, go back to your roots. Relationships, conversations, and trust still matter most. And maybe most important of all: Marketing isn't magic. It's messy, imperfect, and beautifully human—just like us. About Robin Waite Robin is the founder of Fearless Business, a Business Accelerator for Coaches, Consultants and Freelancers. Having spent 12 year's running a digital marketing business, Robin pivoted in 2016 to focus on the part of his business he liked the best; training business owners how to be better in business. In 2016 Robin founded Fearless Business, a unique Business Growth Accelerator for Coaches, Consultants and Freelancers so help free them from the sales cycle of doom! In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, host Alex Whitlock and co-host Broker Essentials' Jason Back give some guidance on how to turn knowledge into action to drive development. Breaking down a brokerage is an important foundational step. There are a variety of directions a business can go and what is ‘right' will depend entirely on the individual's aspirations. However, Back said there are some core fundamentals that can help drive success. Prioritising one action at a time and managing the small wins is key to driving sustainable growth.
Gone are the days when clients were satisfied with an annual check-in or a Christmas card. Today's borrowers expect real-time updates, constant digital engagement, and personalised interactions. This episode of Business Accelerator with Alex Whitlock and Jason Back explored the constant flux of consumer needs and how important it is for brokers to be aware of a shifting market. Brokers must move beyond transactional relationships and focus on ongoing engagement, whether through monthly market updates, milestone celebrations, or interactive tools. The one-size-fits-all approach no longer works. Successful brokers now segment their audience, develop deep expertise in specific areas, and create hyper-personalised content.
Are you brilliant at what you do, but weary of the endless ups and downs in finding clients? In this episode, Anna shares a refreshing approach to building a steady stream of clients - without falling into the trap of burnout, relentless hustle, or relying solely on “lucky” referrals. Get ready to learn how to set up a sustainable business infrastructure that works for you, so you can enjoy greater freedom, flexibility, and fulfilment. Key takeaways: Content Is Not a Client Engine Merely posting online will not reliably bring in clients - content is important, but not sufficient on its own, especially in today's saturated digital world. Referrals: Powerful but Unpredictable Word-of-mouth and client referrals can be an excellent source, especially when you start, but without a systematic approach, they're not a guarantee for sustainable growth. Build a Thoughtful, Repeatable Client Engine Success comes from having a strategic infrastructure built around three pillars: Positioning: Be crystal clear about who you serve, the problem you solve, and what makes you different. Messaging: Communicate your value in your audience's language, focusing on real-world outcomes rather than abstract concepts. Systems: Establish simple, repeatable processes for moving people from curiosity to client, so your business isn't dependent on your daily energy or motivation. Sustainable Lead Generation Anna highlights three sources for consistently attracting new clients: Thoughtful, genuine networking (not sleazy prospecting) Evergreen, high-value content (not fleeting daily posts) Leveraging your signature process or framework to stand out and attract right-fit clients Ready to build a business that actually works for you - without the hustle, or the guesswork? The mortgage broking industry has come a long way since its early days in the 1990s, when brokers relied on paper files, hand scanners, and in-person meetings. In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, Alex Whitlock and Jason Back explore how broking has evolved and where it's headed next. Brokers once spent hours collecting physical documents and driving to client meetings. Today, digital tools enable instant approvals, e-signatures, and virtual consultations. Yet, despite these advances, the core value of brokers remains unchanged. Modern borrowers expect quick updates, personalisation, and seamless communication. Younger clients prefer texting and apps, while older generations may still value phone calls. Brokers must adapt their engagement strategies to meet these preferences.

In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, host Alex Whitlock is joined by Broker Essentials' Jason Back to delve into the current market influencers that are impacting how a broker operates. An election, high interest rates, uncertain economy, and a volatile market are all having an impact on the day-to-day for brokers. Successful brokers must learn to keep development strong despite a challenging environment. Success comes from hard work, deep client relationships, and resilience – not quick wins.
In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, host Alex Whitlock and co-host Jason Back unpack the volatile state of the economy and how it can impact how brokers operate. Geopolitics, an upcoming election, and interest rate drama have culminated in a cocktail of uncertainty, making it a stressful time for brokers. These factors have the potential to impact loan books. Brokers must prepare for some shifts in client attitudes and prepare for the risks that can emerge.
In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, host Alex Whitlock and co-host Jason Back outline the strategy needed to be an effective broker. The modern market shifts constantly and brokers must be adaptive and vigilant of these changes. Tech is having a major impact across all industries and broking is no exception. AI and automation are changing how tasks are performed and brokers must harness the potential to remain competitive. The pair also discussed excelling as a business owner. This starts with mapping out a growth plan, seeking mentorship, and prioritising foundational strengths.
Some brokers aim to build large-scale businesses, with $100 million-plus loan books, while others prefer a smaller, client-focused practice with better work/life balance. Neither of these paths is more successful than the other. It all depends on the individual's goals. This was the topic of discussion in the latest episode of Business Accelerator, where host Alex Whitlock was joined by Jason Back. The pair delved into the measurements of success. Financial, lifestyle, or entrepreneurial ambition all play a factor in determining success. What is important to one broker may not work for another. Brokers must set measured, personal goals. Whether running a solo operation, operating a brokerage, or joining a larger organisation, each has distinct advantages and disadvantages.
Depending on the business model a broker works under, profitability can vary dramatically. Solo practitioners, boutique brokerages, and large firms all face unique challenges. In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, Alex Whitlock and Jason Back outline how to navigate profitability, no matter which model applies. Transitioning from a solo broker to a business owner involves higher stress, overheads, and hiring costs. Scaling requires lead generation and shifting from “doing” to strategic leadership.
In this latest episode of Business Accelerator, Alex Whitlock is joined by Broker Essentials' Jason Back to discuss profitability for the modern broker. Back said that making money is becoming harder as market share hits record highs and overheads add pressure. For a broker wanting to go solo, it can be daunting. Back unpacks some tips for staying profitable amid uncertainty.
In this episode of Business Accelerator, with Jason Back and Alex Whitlock, the duo discuss the best methods for driving growth amid shifts in the market. Marketing and communication are extremely important for winning new clients and brokers must put effort into how they present themselves to consumers. It pays to know your audience. Don't just assume – drive connection. Brokers must strive for “relentless client engagement”, Back said.

In this episode of Business Accelerator, the team delves into the importance of staying informed on products, lenders, and relationships to deliver top-notch service. Having a diverse understanding of not only the traditional pathways, but niche and boutique solutions, means that diverse borrower needs are met.

In this week's episode, we identify five common business mistakes that could be hindering the growth and enjoyment of your business. As an independent expert — whether you're a solopreneur, coach, speaker, or consultant — these insights might be just what you need to pivot from feeling stuck to building a profitable, fulfilling business that complements your lifestyle. From worrying about the 'how' before clarifying the 'what', to getting caught up in daily struggles and forgetting the long-term game, we'll explore practical strategies to overcome these hurdles. Plus, I'll share details on our upcoming webinar series and the Business Accelerator programme designed to offer you personalised support and accountability. Ready to redefine success and build a business you truly love? Let's get started! Key Takeaways: Mistake 1: Worrying About the How Before the What Focus on defining what you want your business to accomplish and why, before getting bogged down by the how. Mistake 2: Getting Caught Up in Today and Forgetting the Long Game Remember that building a sustainable business requires a long-term perspective; don't get discouraged by short-term challenges. Mistake 3: Copying Other People's Business Models Develop an intentional business model that aligns with your unique skills, values, and lifestyle. Mistake 4: Selling Yourself Short Value your expertise and don't be afraid to charge what you're worth. Mistake 5: Waiting for Perfect Clarity Before Taking Action Embrace imperfection and take action; clarity often comes through the process of doing. https://youtu.be/FiWgX9chVDM Brandon Gano, Co-Founder of Whadif, is driven by a desire to fix problems and help business owners get control of their business and time. We learn about Brandon's journey from being a slave to his business to becoming a true business owner, which inspired him to help others do the same. He introduces his HARMONIOUS Business Architecture framework, designed to help owners focus on impactful activities. Additionally, he discusses The Less is More framework, offering a roadmap for diagnosing problems, strategic planning, and executing efficiently to avoid overwhelm and maximize results. --- Get Control of your Business and Time with Brandon Gano Good day, dear listeners, Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast. And my guest today is Brandon Gano, who is the co-founder of Whadif, a Business Accelerator that provides Fractional COO services to people who want to be in control of their business and want their time back. Welcome to the show, Brandon. Steve, thanks for having me here. Yeah, it's great to have you. And I'm very curious about your personal “Why” and what you are doing to manifest it in your business. Yeah, it's a good question. So I personally, from a young age, I've always had this desire to fix problems and then help people. So this kind of two-pronged approach, if you will. So I realized from a young age, again, I was good at the solving problems piece. And then as far as helping people, I mean, there's so many avenues you can go with that, right? So when I first started my business, this was maybe six or seven years ago at this point, I realized that I worked myself into this hole. I worked myself into a job and I was a slave to this business. When I finally got out of that and I became a business owner, not a business operator, I was like, that's it. I wanna help more people achieve this because this is true for you. Like this is what I started my business for. I'm making an impact for my customers, on my employees' lives, on my life. I have control of my time. And I said, I need to give more people the gift of business ownership. So I sold that business last year, but that's what I'm doing now. So that is how it is currently manifesting my personal “Why.” I love solving the problems, helping other people solve the problems in their business that they may not be able to see and then helping them become the business owner that they really want to be. Yeah I love that. I love that mission. I personally believe that business ownership is great, although, obviously, it's got two sides to it. It's not the most stress free existence, way of existence, and it has a lot of challenges, but ultimately, you're in control of your life and that's a great thing to have. So, tell me a little bit about this framework that you developed that's called the HARMONIOUS Business Architecture. So, the way we talked about this on the pre-call that you created this acronym for all these ideas that help people be in control of their business and their time. And then I'd like us to talk about one of the elements of this, which is The Less is More framework. So, tell me about how this HARMONIOUS Business Architecture came about and then we'll talk about Less is More. Yeah, absolutely. So much like you, you have strategy OS and you have your pinnacle framework. Fun fact, Steve was on my podcast as well. So we'll definitely make sure to put a link to that in the show notes because Steve, I loved your episode, you're a fantastic guest. And I don't disagree with your framework at all. I think it overlaps beautifully and we say a lot of the same things. And maybe we look at things a little bit differently, but in the end, it's all about, for us, getting people their time back in an organized way to look at their business so they don't stress out and start pulling their hair out over the years. So as far as HARMONIOUS, I won't go too deep into it but it's an acronym for the 10 fundamental busi...
I bet you feel like you already have enough to do. A lot of what you do (many tasks you shouldn't be doing), should be done by someone else in the business. And it will be done at least 80% as well as, if not better than, if you do it. It will also cost you less for others to do it. Here's the real secret; they love doing the stuff you hate to do. That frees you up to do the things that only you can do. But if you want your tasks to persevere, you must make your instructions clear. Today we are going to demystify delegation by discussing a lesson I got from my time with Michael Hyatt's Business Accelerator program. I'll also share the tools to support you in becoming a better leader by better delegation https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZUAWtMc9s4V4uENXxSLjpmfHDh68TgTv/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=117287118297096999307&rtpof=true&sd=true
