The couple woke up with a hangover after a long night of partying and an argument but that didn't stop them from taking a kayak trip they had been looking forward to on an early spring day in New York. Angelika Graswald and Vincent Viafore would enter the water together that afternoon but only one would return. Angelika would later make a chilling confession. She let him drown and was soon dubbed the Kayak Killer. Her case left many wondering if she was a cold hearted killer or a victim of societal expectations who simply made the choice to save herself. Vincent Viafore went out kayaking with his future wife, Angelika Graswald. When Vincent made his way into some particularly tumultuous water without a life jacket, things took a dark turn. Vincent drowned when his kayak took on too much water.Ten days later, Angelika was arrested for his murder.Police would go on to paint a scene of a woman near her breaking point who intentionally tampered with her lover's kayak—and she was found guilty for it—but is their accusation really true?**NOTE FROM BREEANN***This is a case that has a lot of surprising and disturbing information and claims. Among them is the fact that Angelika had a known history of violence and Vincent started to pressure her to consent to sexual situations that she did not want to participate in—leading her to write a diary entry where she said that she wished he was dead.Violence, threats, and other acts of aggression are domestic violence.Sexual coercion is rape and domestic violence. All of these actions are wrong and should not be tolerated under any circumstances. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, the National Domestic Violence Hotline can help. You can call, text, or instant message a representative today at 1.800.799.7233 or by visiting https://www.thehotline.org.

In Death on the River, bestselling true crime author Diane Fanning recounts a tragic kayak accident that left one man dead—and his fiancée arrested for his murder.A DREAM GETAWAY. A REAL-LIFE NIGHTMARE...It seemed like the perfect romantic afternoon: a kayaking trip for two on the Hudson River. But it ended in tragedy when beautiful, blonde Angelika Graswald called 911 to report that her fiancé, the handsome and athletic Vincent Viafore, had fallen into the choppy frigid waters. Authorities assumed it was an accident. But when the bereft bride-to-be posted videos of herself doing cartwheels on social media—shortly before Vincent’s body was found—suspicions of murder rose to the surface…After hours of questioning, Angelika made several shocking admissions. She said she felt “trapped” and fed up with Vincent’s “demanding” sexual lifestyle: the nightlife, the strip clubs, the threeways. “I wanted him dead,” she had said, even though she insisted that she didn’t kill him. But as more lurid details emerged—including a $250,000 life insurance policy—a killer question remained: Did Angelika remove the plug of her fiancé’s boat…and knock away his paddle as he sank? Angelika Graswald and her fiance, Vincent Viafore, loved going on adventures. On a Sunday in April of 2015, they strapped two kayaks to the top of Vincent’s Jeep and headed for the Hudson River. They planned to kayak over to Pollepel Island, where they’d see the Bannerman Castle ruins. But there were a few big obstacles in their way. The water was cold. Their kayaks weren’t suited for the river. Vincent didn’t wear a life vest. On top of all that, the weather that evening was predicted to take a turn for the worst. On their way back across the river, Vincent’s kayak capsized. Later, Angelika’s statements to detectives had people asking whether this was a tragic accident or a calculated murder. Then Brandi tells us the heartbreaking story of three violent murders at an Oklahoma girl scout camp. In the summer of 1977, Doris Milner, 10, Lori Farmer, 8, and Michelle Guse, 9, shared a tent. Everything seemed normal on the night of June 12, but early the next morning, a camp counselor discovered a grizzly scene. The girls’ dead bodies had been piled together on a trail. The crime stunned and terrified the nation. Police soon captured a man named Gene Leroy Hart. But did they have the right guy? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Murder by kayak?” episode of 20/20 “Woman pleads guilty in fiance’s kayak death on Hudson River,” New York Times “‘Who’s Miranda?’ Suspect in kayak killing didn’t understand her rights, lawyer says,” New York Times “A kayak trip on the Hudson, ending in death and an arrest,” New York Times “Murder charge for woman who said fiance’s kayak capsized in Hudson River,” New York Times “Woman convicted in fiance’s death entitled to portion of his life insurance,” CBS News In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Girl Scout Murders | June 13, 1977” by Tim Stanley, Tulsa World “Girl Scout murders in Oklahoma remain unsolved 40 years after tragedy” by Juliana Keeping and Brianna Bailey, The Oklahoman “Gene Leroy Hart Is Found Innocent In Sex Slayings of Three Girl Scouts” by Jim Bradshaw, The Washington Post “40 Years After 3 Girl Scouts Were Killed at Camp, Police Hope DNA Will Reveal Their Killer” by Jeff Truesdell and Christine Pelisek, People Magazine “The Troubling, Still-Unsolved Case of the 1977 Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders” by Cheryl Eddy, Gizmodo
Angelika Graswald, who was convicted of criminally negligent homicide in the drowning death of her fiancé Vincent Viafore, is now demanding a his $491,000 accidental death insurance payoff. Nancy Grace explores the case with reporter David Hopkins, lawyer Ashley Willcott, psychologist Caryn Stark, and forensics expert Karen Smith in this episode. Cleveland investigators have resolved -- at least partially -- the mystery of a child's remains found in the backyard of an abandoned house. The boy has been identified as 4-year-old Eliazar Ruiz. Syndicated radio host David Mack reports.
