They Found Her Wrecked Jeep With $2,500 Cash and No Sign of He

In March 2000, 23-year-old Leah Roberts packed her white Jeep Cherokee, withdrew thousands of dollars, and left North Carolina on a cross-country road trip inspired by Jack Kerouac. Five days after she was last seen in Bellingham, Washington, a couple jogging along a remote logging road near Mount Baker found her Jeep wrecked at the bottom of an embankment. Leah wasn't inside. There was no blood and no sign of injury. Her belongings were still in the car, including $2,500 in cash and a family heirloom. Blankets had been stuffed into the broken windows, as if someone had used the Jeep for shelter after the crash. Years later, a forensic examination revealed the starter motor had been tampered with, raising the possibility the crash was staged. Witnesses recalled seeing Leah at a Bellingham restaurant shortly before she vanished, possibly speaking with a man whose identity has never been confirmed. More than two decades later, no arrests have been made and Leah has never been found. Was it foul play in the Washington wilderness, or did Leah walk away from her old life? What really happened to Leah Roberts remains unanswered. Do you have a theory? Let us know in the comments. #TrueCrimeRecaps #LeahRoberts #MissingPerson #UnsolvedMystery #ColdCase #MountBaker #Bellingham #RoadTripMystery #Disappearance Learn more about your ad choices. It’s ICECO Month, and they brought in the right guy for it. David from ICECO says that after COVID changed everything. Like a lot of people, he went outside, went wheeling, and ended up pivoting his whole career around it. Now he’s working with a brand that started in OEM refrigeration — manufacturing the internals that go inside other companies’ products — before expanding into the outdoor and overlanding space. That OEM history matters because it’s where the technology comes from. ICECO runs SECOP compressors, which articulate up to 40 degrees without throwing an error — something Jimmy can personally relate to after loading a competitor’s fridge into his truck and watching it fault out. The conversation goes well past compressor specs. David and Tyler get into the framing that stuck with Jimmy most by the end: a fridge isn’t a recreational product that you also use at home — it’s a lifestyle tool that you bring with you. Jimmy’s been using a small fridge for grocery runs with his wife. She loads the car fridge first, doesn’t have to make the store her last stop, and comes home when she feels like it. That’s not overlanding. That’s just Tuesday. And it opened up a whole line of thinking about how the technology is circling back to everyday life after coming through the outdoor market. From there the episode covers some of the new product stuff: the refrigerated backpack (cold drinks on a day hike — the gap between “car camp” and “pack everything in”), the VL45 Plus front-opening drawer fridge that launched on Kickstarter June 10th (Tyler’s take: this solves the “I have to keep the whole back seat clear to open the lid” problem), and the ICECO x PRP collab coolers. David also teases some upcoming product lines he can’t fully get into — racing cooling systems among them, including what sounds like a wearable air conditioning system for fire suits. Tyler’s response: he wants a refrigerator fanny pack for one beer. Jill and Tom open the show sharing news of a massive Jeep recall. Jeep has issued a "park-outside" warning for owners of many late-model Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators. Listen in for details. The hosts discuss Mitsubishi's new electric crossover, the Eclipse Sportback EV. Mitsubishi's first U.S.-market electric vehicle shares its basic architecture with the Nissan Leaf. Jill reviews the Mercedes-Benz E 53 Hybrid wagon. One of a waning number of true station wagons still offered in the U.S., the E 53 serves up power and tech, though exclusive pricing will keep the car a rare sight on U.S. roads. In the second segment, Jill and Tom welcome Automotive News' Larry Vellequette to the show. Larry talks about Toyota quality issues, the Gordie Howe Bridge, and surprisingly robust U.S. auto sales. Listen in for some great insights. In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's "Who is that Guy?" quiz. The hosts wrap up the show with a quick take on Ferrari's first-ever electric vehicle, the controversial Luce. Check out the Car Stuff Podcast Facebook page for a picture of the Luce, and listen in for the price.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Health Update: Still fighting this stomach bug. Starting to feel better. I will return next week. I wanted to play a reloaded episode of one of my favorite intros. Ben writes "Well I finally got up the nerves to send this, back in 2015 I was a Jr in high school. My buddy had called me to see if I wanted to hangout and see his new toy. The toy was a Jeep Wrangler YJ that was abandoned. Even more interesting it was abandoned by a gentlemen that later that same year went to his friends house and shot him. He had some issues I guess. So whilst we went out there we swapped from my brothers truck to mine and proceeded to meet them in the woods. So this is Sweden Maine where he found this. Kinda middle of nowhere. So we get to the Jeep and my friend and my brothers friend go out in the Jeep, leaving my brother and I with my pickup in this clearing. We noticed it was very quiet where we were. Right about then is when a gum ball sized rock landed between us. We looked at each other and played it off. Both kinda bothered we agreed to go towards the entry of the trail to get out of there. (Guess it felt safer) well when we got a little further down the trailer my brother pulled over. (He always drove) it was getting dark probably like 6:30-7pm in May. When I jumped out I looked at this tree too admiring the sky. I saw an entire flock of birds fly out of this tree. I proceeded to slowly drop my head looking down the tree the whole time. When I got to the middle of the tree is when I saw something. I saw a figure in the woods. Left arm and leg obscured by the tree looked as if it's left palm was against the tree. It was rocking slightly, it had a long arm that I could see on its right side and a big build. I couldn't see the feet but the head, shoulder, torso, and leg all on the left was clearly visible (as a silhouette). It was rocking slightly left to right and could see it breather. I looked at my brother and he was frozen looking at it. I asked him "what is that?" He only responded with "get in the truck" I looked back and it was still standing there swaying. I looked back at my brother and said again "what the f— is that?" To which my brother responded with "get in the f—— truck." My door was still open so I kinda dove backwards into it. My brother quickly had it started and the clutch already out and fishtailing away. I couldn't bring myself to look backwards. But we were spooked. There was an interesting situation with a set of lights behind us upon our escape but I'm not sure what to make of it. We called the friends that we were leaving so they either had to ditch the Jeep or drive it back to his house. Oddly they too sounded distressed. But they agreed to meet on the trail. We flew back down the trail driving way faster than anyone should. We came up to them and they stuffed the Jeep in the woods. What caught my attention next was they ran and I mean RAN to my truck, keeping a hand on my hood the whole time. I slid up against my brother so to make room for them. It was a regular cab. We drove out of there and my brother and I not wanting to get played asked them why they were so worked up. They stated to us the they had gotten stuck for a moment and whilst working it out of the mud something slapped the side of the Jeep and rocked it side to side. It was too dark for them to see anything under the heavy tree canopy and the night setting in more. It certainly was a wild time. Only other thing was some vocalizations the year prior that sounded exactly like the other howl captured in Maine. That's my story Wes thanks for doing what you do."

JD is joined by Angela Rickerson, the Seattle-based driver behind Ronda Rhino, for a conversation about Jeep life, Rebelle Rally, Pacific Northwest rock crawling, and the messy, rewarding path into off-roading. Angela shares how a 2017 two-door Jeep Wrangler went from “cool preschool drop-off rig” to a heavily built desert rally and rock crawling machine. The episode digs into Rebelle Rally endurance, sponsorship realities, stunt driving, DirtFish-style rally training, Jeep clubs, women in off-road, and why good spotting beats “just send it” every single time. If you're into Jeep Wrangler builds, women off-roaders, rally driving, rock crawling, or just finding your people on the trail, this one is absolutely worth the ride.

So I go into the place, and the guy says to me, I go into the oil change place, and he says, oh, your tires could use a little air. I'm like, all right, well, what pressure should I put them at? And he's like, well, if you put them at 35, they'll last longer, but 40, you'll get more performance. All right, well, you're the expert, what should I put them at? And you could tell, he was like, well, that's not for me to decide, Carl, you know, it's your Jeep there. And I was like, dude, I came in, you're the tire store. I don't know, if this were your Jeep, what would you put it at? He goes, 38.  38, I'll do 38, so I got a good choice.  Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. 715: Tyler Takes Reid Wheeling & Jimmy’s High School Camping Reunion

Snail Trail 4x4

Jimmy and Tyler are back from very different weekends that somehow both ended the same way: hanging out with people you don’t see enough, doing stuff you love, and getting home before dark. Tyler took his toddler, Reid, out on the Rubicon for the first time, joining the Mad Hatters’ annual run at Loon. The trip came with an unexpected education: when you normally run sweep, you get out at every stop and help people. When you’re strapped to the car with a two-year-old, you’re sitting in the driver’s seat watching everyone else work for 15-minute stretches while your kid starts losing patience. By the time the group reached Spider Bowl around 10:30 am, Tyler pulled off at a campsite, radioed a goodbye, had lunch, and watched a Toyota pickup spend 30 minutes trying and failing to get up Super Bowl while Reid stood in the bed pointing at things and making everyone laugh. Two hours there, then out solo with Reid in the front seat, the air compressor cycling the rear locker, and Reid looking over every time to announce “dad tooting.” Home before 4 pm. Left at 5 am. Not a bad day. Jimmy left the assistant on her last day of school and drove up to dispersed camping near Bowman Road off Highway 20 — a trip organized around a group of high school friends he doesn’t see nearly enough, some of whom he hasn’t camped with in years. They came with trucks, a rooftop tent, a box of whiskey, handguns, a .22 rifle, Brandon’s breakfast burritos, and a set of homemade medallion awards for the weekend’s various competitions. The competitions included a shooting match (7 shooters, 10 rounds apiece at three stations — 210 shots hit paper across the board, which Jimmy found genuinely impressive), forest bocce (where bocce balls bounce off rocks and go 90 degrees), and a campfire tending category. Jimmy got fourth in the shooting competition, first in fire. He also got shot, sort of — a ricochet fragment hit one of the guys in the shoulder and another in the shin, both minor, first aid kits came out, everyone reevaluated, then they ran the formal shooting competition anyway. The guy who got hit (Michael — friend of a friend, first time meeting) turned out to be a serious whiskey person. Jimmy is also a serious whiskey person. Neither of them knew the other was bringing four bottles. They spent hours trading sips and talking. It was a great trip. They’re making it annual. The “magic” Donut Labs battery gets debunked as ordinary lithium‑ion, tied to a crowdfunding-fueled scam with big promises and no manufactured cells, while real solid-state progress is still coming from major automakers. Americans are keeping cars longer (now ~13 years), slowing the spread of safety tech like advanced AEB. Driverless delivery trucks tout reliability and UL 4600 talk, but robotaxis draw scrutiny for safety claims, red-light issues, and a stalled vehicle that delayed firefighters. Zoox safety marketing and exemptions get criticized, Texas is dragged for an unfunded school-bus seatbelt mandate, liquid hydrogen gets a quick reality check, and multiple recalls hit seatbelts, moonroofs, and fire risks (Jeep, Pacifica PHEV).Support the show!https://electrek.co/2026/06/08/donut-lab-solid-state-battery-exposed-lithium-ion-fraud/https://www.wsj.com/business/autos/americans-are-keeping-their-cars-longer-than-ever-and-remaking-the-auto-industry-c169e494https://www.wsj.com/business/logistics/driverless-trucks-pepsico-texas-arizona-arkansas-ee4495f0?mod=hp_lead_pos11https://edition.cnn.com/us/waymo-robotaxis-safety-invshttps://www.yahoo.com/news/videos/bodycam-shows-cop-trying-move-102600011.htmlhttps://abc13.com/post/texas-school-districts-struggling-costs-complying-bus-seatbelt-law/19235825/https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2026/RCLRPT-26V356-0668.pdfhttps://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2026/RCLRPT-26V344-7460.pdfhttps://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2026/RCLRPT-26V346-4589.pdfhttps://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2026/RCLRPT-26V363-5757.pdfhttps://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2026/RCLRPT-26V362-0804.pdf

Keep your phone out of the bathroom! Hemorrhoids are so much more common when we sit and scroll while doing our business. Considering that next time. Maybe make a TikTok limit. AI vs organic speeches. After graduation, speakers have been using AI and taking the stage sounding like robots, Anna needed to bring back her speech as a refresher. Raven reads his AI speech.  The Knicks are the talk of the town. And the... wallet. Fans are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to watch the NBA final championship games, with not a regret to be found!  Anna recently found out the bigger your thighs, the longer you have to live, supposedly. Today, Anna, Raven, producer Sophia and producer Justin all measured their thighs and Anna decided what age they'd die at. Phew.  Raven opened his pool and found a WHOLE lot of frogs. Could be worse, though, some of these findings are horror stories! What did you find in your pool?   This week, Raven goes head-to-head against the top of the class! It's Cant Beat Raven: Valedictorian version! Congrats Emma! 90 celebrities showed up to the knicks game last night. Plus, a controversial appearance. Ben stiller and Timothy Chalamet, per usual. But some surprising other attendees. Is there a right or wrong way to do laundry? Laundry expert, Richard Handel joins Anna and Raven to discuss laundry and the art of it. Are you doing yours correctly? What's your protocol?  Beth and Brian's son is asking for a Jeep for graduation. She thinks it's a ridiculous waste of money, he can't take it to college with him, and it'll just sit in the driveway. He says that he'll use it when he's home, and part of graduation is getting a rite of passage, and he's never had his own car, this is it! She says they'll be paying insurance on a car that's never getting used. What would you do? Steve has a chance to win $2,200! All he has to do is answer more pop culture questions than Raven in Can't Beat Raven!

Lots of rain yesterday…getting a bit of a break today…then more rain likely tomorrow. Keeping my eyes on the forecast for Saturday as I'm going to attempt to finish my backyard firepit! In the news this morning, a wild video of a high speed chase in Arkansas that resulted in a rollover crash, a Wisconsin teenager gets a life sentence for a brutal murder, a recall on certain Jeep models, and a "Distinguished Gentlemen" situation happening in Alaska. In sports, the Brewers win a wild one against the A's in extra innings, the Spurs beat the Knicks in Game three of the NBA Finals last night, Charles Barkley had an interesting observation about Cardi B., the Stanley Cup final continues tonight, Brendan Sorsby gets an injunction and a lot of people aren't happy about it. We talked about what's on TV today/tonight and let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday. Elsewhere in sports, Connor McDavid wins the Ted Lindsay award and Kurt Busch pays tribute to his brother, Kyle. A baby coyote with a bunch of cactus spurs stuck to it gets rescued, and a breakthrough with a possible cancer vaccine. Have you heard of the "Screw method" scam? Apparently, it's just a big hoax. 714: Protecting Pismo: Keeping California’s Only Drive-On Beach Open

Snail Trail 4x4

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 95:13

Oceano Dunes at Pismo Beach is the only place in California where you can legally drive on the beach. For over 25 years, Jim Suty and Friends of Oceana Dunes have been fighting to keep it that way. Jimmy and Tyler sit down with Jim to talk about what’s happening now — and what’s been happening for a long time. This one covers a lot of ground. Jim walks through the history of the snowy plover fight that started around 2001, the dust pollution battle that took center stage around 2019–2020, and the new issue that’s surfaced after all of that: SVR (the State Vehicular Recreation Area that manages the dunes) never completed the Incidental Take Permit for the snowy plover that should have been finalized as part of the original mitigation. The ITP is the document that allows recreation to continue in habitat where an endangered species is present, provided land managers mitigate impact to acceptable levels. Without it, the dunes are exposed. And because SVR was always reacting to the next crisis — the next budget cut, the next complaint from the Coastal Commission, the next thing coming down from the state level — the ITP kept getting pushed down the priority list until it didn’t get done. Jimmy and Tyler dig into why this keeps happening — turnover in land manager leadership, no consistent long-term relationships with the local OHV community, a reactive management culture that never gets ahead of anything. The parallels to what Jimmy and Tyler see with El Dorado National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and the Rubicon are everywhere. The dust fight is a good-news story worth hearing in full. During COVID, when the dunes were closed and no OHVs were running, Friends of Oceana Dunes commissioned studies that showed the dust particulate in the town of Oceano was not being caused by OHV activity on the dunes. The science that the APCD and the Coastal Commission had been using to justify closures and restrictions was wrong. Friends of Oceana Dunes fought it in court, won, and the APCD was ruled to have been incorrect — with money that had been spent on dust mitigation going back toward recreational purposes. Tyler and Jimmy hold this up as exactly what litigation looks like when it works. On where the money needs to come from: Tyler makes the argument that $20 to a litigation organization like Friends of Oceana Dunes or Blue Ribbon Coalition does more long-term work than $20 to a trail maintenance volunteer fund. Both matter. But if you can only pick one, he argues the scale is in favor of litigation. The numbers are striking — Jim mentions that 1.5 to 2.5 million people visit Oceana Dunes per year. If every one of them gave a quarter, Friends of Oceana Dunes would have a $500K–$750K operating budget. That’s how underfunded these organizations are relative to the scale of the impact they’re having. Also in this episode: the new California OHV certification bill being pushed by KORVA (which has passed its first stages of legislation), the “two knuckleheads” problem and why bad actors in OHV get more press than bad actors in every other outdoor recreation category, why the Coastal Commission tried to stop Friends of Oceana Dunes from picking up trash on the beach, the OHV super PAC joke that maybe wasn’t entirely a joke, and Jimmy’s personal note about his college memories at Pismo. Closing call to action: time, talent, or treasures. Find your carrot, find the organization working on it, and put something toward it. **Find Friends of Oceana Dunes:** Website: https://www.oceanodunes.org/Donate Today: https://www.paypal.com/donate?token=XpwAwnzV8dxTRn3lCzpU2W8PtfcpioHxik3tAvbkFMfOIHbNvXjXH22QILbpr6ixt8Xs15fStatskAR3Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/friendsofoceanodunes/Desert Fest: https://www.oceanodunes.org/2025/09/24/march-2026-dezertfest/ SnailTrail4x4 Discord: https://discord.gg/yFyFFkQbuyCome hang out with us on the SnailTrail4x4 Discord — it’s the easiest way to connect with Tyler and Jimmy directly, chat with fellow offroad enthusiasts, and get first access to Group Buys and Treasure Hunt token drops. Still in the first segment, the hosts are joined by fellow automotive journalist Ed Piotrowski. In Part 2 of Murder: True Crime Stories, Carter Roy and Katie Ring, host of America's Most Infamous Crimes, follow the case against Kaitlin Armstrong in the 2022 murder of rising gravel racing star Mo Wilson. Digital forensics revealed months of obsessive surveillance, but a clerical error let Armstrong walk out of the police station before the murder warrant was ready. Within days, she had sold her Jeep, stolen her sister's passport, and fled to Costa Rica, where she paid cash for plastic surgery and assumed a fake identity. What followed was a 43-day international manhunt, a forensic goldmine hidden in her vehicle's GPS, and a trial that ended with a guilty verdict and a 90-year sentence. This week Alex and Randy go over all their recent favorites from the site, talking along the way about a heavy-breathing Fairlane, the terrible-or-terrific teals of the early '90s, a bullet-riddled Jeep, a raft of special Z-cars, and one of our favorite sellers. They take a lengthy detour into oddball induction setups before returning to the special Cunningham race car on the site, which prompts memories of Alex's traumatic childhood visit to The Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum.Next, assumed clone status; missing a Rallye in Tahoe; a brief review of '80s box flares, followed by an about-face to perhaps the curviest car ever made; a solid parking lot scene on taco night; fulfilling a 60-year dream for Alex's dad; a visit to Charlie Goodman's place; Randy's upcoming pod episode with Rob Fisher ahead of our appearance at the Hillsborough Concours, the longest-running event of its kind in California; our July gathering at the Rose Cup at PIR (also the location of the first-ever BaT event); and this summer's BaT sponsorship of the vintage weekend festivities in Elkhart Lake.Follow along! Just Jimmy and Tyler kicking off June with something that’s been on Jimmy’s mind since the Rubicon trip — and since the Barrett Lake outhouse project started spreading to other forests. The short version: the National Forest Service is being restructured in a way that removes local regional offices. The closest regional office for El Dorado National Forest, Tahoe National Forest, and Stanislaus National Forest is now in Salt Lake City. That means people who have never set foot on our trails are making decisions about them. Jimmy draws the parallel to what happened at Gemini Bridges and Labyrinth Rims — 2,200 miles of trails evaluated and closed by people working off a map. No boots on the ground. And those were local BLM offices. Now imagine Salt Lake City. The call to action is clear: the off-road community needs to show up at the table before the restructuring finishes and the table gets moved somewhere else. Jimmy runs through what that looks like in practice. The Mad Hatters just completed their adopted section of the Rubicon Trail. Friends of Fordyce and Friends of Rubicon had a big work weekend. Spree to Four (or the Granite Bandits — Jimmy goes back and forth) does Corral Hollow every year and opens more roads than the county can staff. There’s a work party at Moon Rocks coming up to install 32 named obstacle signs, with BLM permission. And the Barrett Lake blob bathroom project — the one the off-road community funded and built — is now being copied onto Fordyce at Committee Crossing and Wind Chill 3, and at Observation Point on the Rubicon. Tahoe National Forest, which historically does not collaborate with El Dorado National Forest, asked to copy the project. That’s what showing up looks like. How to get involved: contact your local ranger district, come with questions not demands, keep digging until you find the person who can actually answer them. Search Facebook groups for your specific riding area. If nothing exists, start the conversation. For funding, Onyx has their Trail Revival Program live right now — $5,000 grants, Jimmy applied and got one last year, the main ask is media showing the work was done. Tread Lightly and BFG also have trail grant programs. The window for making a real impact is right now, during the restructure, not after it’s done. Also in this episode: today (June 1) is the last day to use the Devos LightRanger 500 group buy discount code. The Russo May giveaway has closed — winner announcement coming Thursday. The June giveaway is not announced yet but Jimmy teases it’s a company they’ve worked with before and it’s a good one. Apple Podcast reviews are approaching 800 (Onyx Elite giveaway waiting at that mark), and Jimmy drops another hint on the big SnailArmor Black Friday launch — “we’ve already changed how inflation and deflation is done globally, and we’re about to do it again.” We have a massive discount this month with Rusoh Fire Extinguishers. 711:  Jimmy Hits the Sphere, Tyler Hits the Rubicon — Memorial Day Weekend Stories

Snail Trail 4x4

Jimmy went to Vegas for No Doubt at the Sphere, then up to a family cabin in Truckee. The Sphere gets a full breakdown — the way the seats actually rumble, why the general admission floor might be the worst seat in the house, how the venue works as both a concert and a movie at the same time, and the weight-based checkout technology that somehow knew exactly what he grabbed off the shelf. After the show, he wandered through the Venetian into a piano bar and ordered what he describes as the worst Sazerac he’s ever had in his life. From there, Frontier Airlines to Reno, parents pick them up, a cabin at Tahoe Donner, a high ropes course, a run-in with Jason Green at a Truckee street market, Jackbox games, and a bear box — not an actual bear. Tyler took the F-350, Fiona on the trailer, the secretary, and Reed down to Rubicon Springs. The pre-trip wasn’t smooth: Fiona’s AC recharged Thursday, leaked back out by Friday morning, and the roof rack bolts were missing entirely — cue a hardware store bolt-matching tangent that goes deep into Torx bits versus hex heads and why that matters for plastic covers. But the trip itself was exactly what Jimmy needed. Dirty Dozen camp. No cell service. Fiona ran the whole trail without any real drama. What made this episode are the trail encounters. At Tahoma staging, Tyler ran into a Jeep crew that had accidentally over-pressurized and broken their mechanical gauge, which turns into a full explanation of why digital gauges exist and why analog gauge accuracy degrades at the edges of the scale — MorrFlate context makes this land. Then on trail, a Canadian couple stranded since Wednesday with a broken Dana 35, a sheared steering box, and a winch that pulled off the bumper — all in one trip — and this was the wife’s first time ever offroading. Tyler explains the TFS spare parts program at Rubicon Springs (donate your old upgraded parts so they can bail out people exactly like this couple), and it’s one of the better trail culture segments they’ve done in a while. Also on the weekend: Justin Wicks ripping the entire Rubicon on a dirt bike faster than Tyler predicted, Greg Bakken rolling through solo in his two-door JC, Horton showing up to camp, Chris Neely floating down the river with Emma on what was allegedly their first date, a listener named Max welding a diff drain plug using Tyler’s Karnage suitcase welder, and an Australian MorrFlate owner who told his buddies they needed to get one — not knowing he was talking to the actual owner.
