The deadliest marine disaster on the west coast of North America occurred in Lynn Canal on October 24, 1918, but few people have ever heard of it. Approximately 345 people died when the SS Princess Sophia slid off Vanderbilt Reef and sank. In this listener Q&A episode, Shari Rash answers three real-life money questions from women trying to make smarter financial decisions without overthinking, guilt, or one-size-fits-all advice. First, how do you plan for holidays, birthdays, travel, school events, weddings, and family obligations without feeling like you are budgeting every bit of joy out of your life? Then, what if you grew up in a family where money was never discussed — and now you feel embarrassed asking basic financial questions as an adult? And finally, if you are single, own your home, and rely on one income, is a three-to-six-month emergency fund really enough? Or does it make sense to keep a larger cash cushion? Shari breaks down how to use sinking funds for predictable-but-irregular expenses, why not knowing something about money is not a personal failure, and how single women can think about emergency funds, homeownership, liquidity, and investing with more nuance. Because real financial planning is not about following generic rules perfectly. It is about knowing how those rules apply to your actual life. The 5 Jobs of Profit

Your Fitness Money Coach Podcast

#336 This bite-sized solo episode explains why profit should not be treated as one pile of money to spend at will. Billy shares a simple framework for assigning every dollar of profit a purpose, so business owners can avoid tax surprises, manage debt, build reserves, and grow with more control. He uses a real-life tax bill as the trigger for the discussion and breaks the topic into five practical jobs of profit that matter for any business owner, especially gym owners. Key topics In this episode, Billy introduces the "jobs of profit" framework and explains why profit needs to be divided intentionally instead of paid out immediately. Taxes come first - Billy says the IRS effectively gets paid before the owner does, so set aside a percentage of each dollar of profit in a separate tax savings account. Owner distributions are a legitimate use of profit - after paying yourself a reasonable operating salary, some profit can be taken as an owner draw or distribution. Sinking funds help cover large purchases - instead of relying on debt for equipment or other major expenses, profit can be reserved over time for future needs. Debt repayment is not a business expense - principal payments come from after-tax profit, so a business that only breaks even may still not have enough cash to service debt. A cushion creates margin and flexibility - Billy recommends aiming for roughly three months of operating expenses to protect against slow months and surprise costs. Profit can fund intentional growth - with reserves in place, businesses can expand locations, hire staff, add programs, or seize opportunities without scrambling. The main warning: Billy says many owners make the mistake of giving profit only one job, usually owner pay, which leaves them exposed on taxes, debt, and future expenses. Notable quotes "Profit has different jobs." "The IRS is the epitome of pay yourself first." "Be greedy when other people are fearful." Take the Gym Owner Financial Health Check, which will show you exactly where you need to focus.

//The Wire//2300Z August 5, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: ALLEGED DRONE ATTACK REPORTED TARGETING UKRAINIAN AIRCRAFT AT GERMAN AIRPORT. MERCHANT SUNK IN THE SOUTHERN RED SEA IN DRONE BOAT ATTACK. MAN ARRESTED IN CALIFORNIA AHEAD OF PRESIDENT TRUMP'S VISIT TO GOLF CLUB YESTERDAY.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Red Sea/HOA: This morning one merchant vessel reported being struck by an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) near the Bab el Mandeb Strait. The UKMTO reported the vessel as being sunk during the attack. The incident occurred so quickly that the UKMTO was not notified during the attack, and the ship sank almost immediately after the incident.Analyst Comment: If the Houthis are now using USVs during this phase of operations, this war just got a lot more serious. The Houthis have demonstrated this capability in the past (such as the war with the United States last year), but have refrained from using this tactic so far during this campaign. Sinking a vessel using a USV is a new step toward closing the Bab el Mandeb, and the response from insurance companies will be an indicator to monitor, as this chokepoint becomes a warzone once again.Germany: This morning a series of possible explosive drone attacks was reported at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Just before midnight, one quadcopter-type drone was observed operating over the airport, prompting drone procedures to be enacted and aircraft grounded. During this response, a search of the airport resulted in the discovery of a second quadcopter lying on the tarmac near a Ukrainian cargo plane. This drone appeared to contain an explosive charge, though no contact detonation apparatus was visible in the provided photos of this device. After this incident was concluded and flight operations resumed, a DHL cargo aircraft collided with a third drone (of unknown type) upon takeoff from this airport, which resulted in the aircraft declaring an emergency and diverting to another airport due to the damage to the airframe.-HomeFront-USA: Around the nation cyberattacks on critical infrastructure continue. Over the past few days, water utilities in a total of 12x states have been affected by malign actors since last month. After the large-scale cyberattacks which resulted in dozens of water districts being locked out of their systems in Minnesota, many more states have reported similar incidents. Georgia is the latest state affected by cyberattacks, and this afternoon New Jersey also reported two water districts being targeted, both of which had to cut access to unspecified computer systems and switch to operating manually.Analyst Comment: As with most infrastructure attacks, these incidents are usually not immediately disclosed to the public unless the public would find out about it anyway, so the timing of all of these cyberattacks is not really known. The Minnesota attacks last week were publicized immediately due to the immediate impact to the public, and now that more eyes are on the issue (and various federal agencies have issued warnings of more attacks), more lower-level municipalities are disclosing that they had similar breaches over the past two weeks. As far as the malign actors behind these cyberattacks, it could be anyone. It does not take a nationstate level actor to breach a system that was using the default passwords or wasn't secured properly in the first place, but the targeting of a nation's water supply indicates the motive is probably in the military realm. No ransomware or demands have been noted, and no hacking group has claimed credit yet. These attacks were meant to directly take services offline, ruling out financial motives for the time being.California: Yesterday the DoJ announced the arrest of an individual tied to a possible security breach at the Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. The press release states that Jeanine John Taele was observed conducting surveillance by the initial Secret Service advance team that was sent to the Golf Club ahead of President Trump's visit. Taele was observed wearing an earpiece and taking photos of the security practices at the club, which drew the eye of the USSS. The suspect departed the facility and transited to his home, where he was apprehended by the Secret Service. During a search of his belongings agents found a few firearms, a pair of binoculars, and a generic badge used by security guards. Additionally, authorities discovered several notebooks containing "concerning statements" at his residence.Analyst Comment: The press release left enough ambiguity to make it difficult to determine what actually happened here: This could be extremely serious, or just some idiot who got too curious. The mention of the earpiece is an important detail, because depending on what that earpiece was, this could be a big deal. The way the release is written, this could easily have been a bluetooth headset as is customarily displayed by those who prefer the rather garish utilitarianism of wearing at all times. Or, this could have been a more substantial security threat that expands beyond just one person. If this individual was acting suspiciously, taking photos of security equipment, speaking into a "radio signal device" with an earpiece, and had vaguely described manifesto-esque notebooks at his residence...this was probably way more serious than just some guy walking around.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The drone incident in Germany will be heavily scrutinized as this is a major escalation which can be interpreted in many different ways. First off all, it must be noted that the one extremely blurry photo of one drone may or may not actually show an explosive charge. What looks like an explosive charge could also be the battery pack, it's hard to tell based on the photo. If there were explosives onboard, it would have been a very small charge and not the flying artillery shells that have become common during the war.At the wavetop level, it is hard to believe that a nation-state level actor which has undeniably mastered the art of conducting attacks with sUAS platforms in war...would fail. If Russia was behind this attack, and really intended to target Ukrainian aircraft on the ground in Germany, a 100% failure rate using multiple explosive drones is extraordinarily unlikely. As a result, it's possible that this was either a false-flag attack intended to blame Russia, or it was Russia sending a message to NATO. Conducting a drone attack, but deliberately leaving the detonator disconnected so that the debris is found and forensic analysis of the explosives leads to a Russian factory, would be a classic Russian message...that's their style perfectly. This is the Kremlin's version of "per my last email", and proves two very serious ideas: NATO's aircraft are vulnerable on their home turf, and Russia already has clandestine forces located near NATO airports poised and waiting to eliminate NATO aircraft before they ever get off the ground. That message is more valuable than taking out one Ukrainian transport plane. However, this whole saga could also be the Ukrainians trying to expand the war, continuing the trend that has been expanding for some time. Since the very start, Zelenskyy has been trying to draw the whole world into their war, and has conducted attacks involving other European nations (such as Monaco and Turkey), which have served as an attempt to bring other nations in to the war to fight the Russians for them. From the Ukrainian perspective this makes sense, and every nation on earth fighting such a nasty war would also use trickery in a similar manner. But for the DHL pilots who almost died and other collateral damage over the years, this is hardly reassuring. The truth will probably be indirectly told in the mainstream media, by what rhetoric is being pushed. If this incident is downplayed and memory-holed, it probably was the Russians. If the mainstream media sources in NATO countries start an information campaign to spin this in their favor, the chances of this being a fake attack go up. For everyone who does not have the ability to forensically analyze the devices themselves, the true culprit might never be known. All the while the new Cold War becomes increasingly more hot, every single day.Analyst: S2A1 Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground NomadNet: 5fa68c88be727a0e1a250a75e5e79269 Disclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report. //END REPORT//

In this episode, we ask a difficult question: Why would Jesus send his disciples straight into a storm he knew was coming? As the wind drives them farther from shore and fear overtakes them, we discover that the real battle isn't against the waves—it's against the doubt that God's promise could fail. Peter's cry, "Lord, save me," becomes our own, as Christ shows that faith doesn't come from our courage, but from hearing his Word: "Take heart. It is I. Do not be afraid."GOSPEL Matthew 14:22-33 22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." 28 Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."CARE OF SOULS: DEATHIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those facing death, grief, and loss.Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders.Across five episodes, the hosts tackle tough but essential questions on death:How does Lutheran theology speak uniquely to death and grief? What does faithful pastoral care look like when walking alongside those who mourn? How can pastors offer both honesty and hope in the face of tragedy and loss? What does ministry look like when death impacts the pastor as well as the congregation? Why do funerals matter, and what is God giving through them? With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the sorrow of death not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ.Because in the end, it's not about avoiding death—it's about hearing the Gospel from the One who has passed through death and opened the way to life.Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of SoulsSupport the showInterested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First?Email Sarah at sarah@lhos.org or visit our donation page: lutherhouseofstudy.org/donate

The USS Indianapolis sinking remains one of the most devastating naval disasters of World War II. On July 30, 1945, Japanese submarine I-58 torpedoed the heavy cruiser in the Philippine Sea after it completed a secret mission delivering components for the Little Boy atomic bomb to Tinian.Indianapolis sank in about twelve minutes. Nearly nine hundred sailors and Marines reached the water alive, but only 316 of the nearly twelve hundred people aboard survived. For more than three days, the survivors drifted across miles of open ocean with little food, almost no fresh water and failing life jackets. They endured burns, injuries, dehydration, hallucinations, exposure and real shark attacks whose exact death toll can never be known. No rescue force had been sent to find them. The Navy's movement-reporting system failed to recognize that an entire warship was missing, and patrol pilot Wilbur Gwinn discovered the survivors only after a faulty antenna drew him to a hatch above an enormous oil slick. In this episode of Terrifying & True, we follow the secret atomic mission, the attack by Mochitsura Hashimoto's submarine, the twelve-minute sinking, the desperate work of men such as Lewis Haynes, Thomas Conway and Edward Parke, and the dangerous open-ocean landing by PBY pilot Robert Adrian Marks. We also examine the court-martial of Captain Charles McVay, the campaign to clear his name, the 2017 discovery of the wreck, and the way Quint's famous Jaws monologue transformed a complex institutional disaster into a shark legend.Inside this episode:USS Indianapolis and the secret Little Boy atomic bomb mission Japanese submarine I-58 and commander Mochitsura Hashimoto The twelve-minute sinking and nearly nine hundred men in the water Sharks, dehydration, hallucinations and more than three days at sea Wilbur Gwinn, Robert Marks and the accidental rescue Captain Charles McVay's court-martial and eventual exoneration How did a decorated American cruiser vanish between major bases without triggering an immediate search - and why did it take fifty-five years to correct the blame placed on its captain? We're telling that story tonight.

In the early hours of February 3, 1943, the USS Dorchester was hit by a German torpedo in the icy waters off Greenland. As soon as they realized there weren’t enough life jackets to go around, four Army chaplains – a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, and two Protestant ministers – took off their own and gave them to terrified soldiers, urging them to save themselves. Neil Lanctot details the March 1916 sinking of the Sussex, which caused more American deaths and pushed Wilson to the brink of war. German Ambassador Johann von Bernstorff worked desperately to maintain peace, recognizing that American entry would doom Germany, while Wilson largely ignored his own ambassadors in London and Berlin, whom he considered useless or biased. Interestingly, the Wilson administration used wiretaps to monitor the German embassy, revealing Bernstorff's personal affairs and diplomatic strategies. In Berlin, leaders distrusted Wilson, viewing him as leaning toward the Allies, while British leaders like Lloyd George were frustrated by American neutrality. Domestically, TR's rage at Wilson's "holding back" reached a boiling point, leading him to use vulgar language toward the President during private meetings with Republican financiers. Meanwhile, militant pacifist Rosika Schwimmer, who had initially drawn Henry Ford into the peace movement, was marginalized as the movement became increasingly fragmented and impractical. (5)1914

Neil Lanctot examines the May 7, 1915, sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine, which killed over 100 Americans and sparked a massive crisis for American progressivism. Wilson's advisor, Colonel House, urged severing ties with Germany—a move that typically signaled war—but Wilson resisted, famously declaring that a nation could be "too proud to fight." This restraint infuriated TR, who was simultaneously fighting a high-stakes libel trial against Republican boss William Barnes. TR argued that losing national self-respect was worse than war, though he acknowledged the U.S. was militarily unprepared. Internal administration tension peaked when Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a staunch pacifist and ally of Addams, resigned in protest, believing Wilson's diplomatic notes to Germany were too provocative. During this turmoil, the newly married Edith Bolling Wilson began asserting her influence, successfully maneuvering to diminish Colonel House's role by sowing doubt about his loyalty in Wilson's mind. The Sinking and Discovery of the USCGC Tampa On September 26, 1918, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tampa vanished into the Bristol Channel after a German U-boat torpedo struck her hull, killing all 131 sailors and personnel aboard in what remains the largest single loss of American life in combat during World War I. For over a century, the ship's final resting place stayed a mystery until April 2026, when a British volunteer dive team called Gasperados located her wreckage roughly 50 miles off Newquay, Cornwall, more than 300 feet beneath the Atlantic. In this video, we cover the full story of the Tampa: her origins as the Revenue Cutter Miami in 1912, her service on international ice patrols, her wartime role escorting convoys through U-boat-infested waters, the night she was lost, and the painstaking three-year search that finally solved one of the Coast Guard's oldest mysteries.
