In early August of 1991, the Oceanos was close to finishing a seven day cruise from Cape Town, South Africa to Durban. While sailing through a treacherous storm all the power went out on board, and the passengers were left in the dark in more ways than one. Neither the crew nor the captain told the passengers what had caused the black out or that the ship was actually going down. After most of the crew abandoned ship, it was up to the entertainment staff on board to save everyone's lives.

A little past midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a US Navy cruiser, had just delivered the uranium that would be used in the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan, and was returning to the Philippines when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo. The ship was badly damaged in the attack and within ten minutes it rolled onto its side, dumping 890 crewmen into the pitch-black ocean and dragging the remaining 300 down with the ship.Those who survived the torpedo strike did what they could to grab supplies before abandoning ship, but there were very few life boats or life jackets, so many of the sailors had to float in the water or cling to the few rafts they did manage to take before jumping from the boat. To make matters worse, their mission had been highly confidential and no one in the Navy knew where the Indianapolis was, much less that it had sank. The Bridgetown Initiative, which she launched at COP26 in 2021, transformed the conversation around climate finance – pushing rich nations to do more to support developing countries struggling with the impact of climate change. But as the US retreats from climate action, her bold vision faces new challenges. At the Sustainable Energy for All Global Forum in Barbados, she tells Akshat Rathi why she remains optimistic, and she spoke about the role of pragmatism in tackling the climate challenge. Einon's Journal Summary: On our way towards the next core, we found a decrepit Clockwinders way station in the depths of the swamp. Imagine my pride at seeing Kade leaping headlong to the aid of a friend in danger. Maxine discovered a lovely little tidbit about the dangers we might face at the swamp's Movement Core. I was able to put our moss bear hide to use, though not in what one might consider a conventional manner.
