A stateless vessel has no right to the protections normally afforded to ships under a national flag, including immunity from interference by other states. UNCLOS Articles 92, 94, 110, and customary maritime law spell out the consequences clearly: 1. Stateless vessels have no sovereign protection. A flagged ship is an extension of its flag-state's sovereignty. A stateless vessel is not. This matters because “war crimes” presuppose protected persons or protected property. A stateless vessel is legally unprotected. 2. Any state may stop, board, search, seize, or disable, a stateless vessel. UNCLOS Article 110 explicitly authorizes boarding and seizure. The law does not require states to risk their own personnel or assets while doing so. Disabling a vessel that refuses inspection, including firing on it, is legally permitted under both UNCLOS and long-established state practice. 3. War crimes require an armed conflict. You cannot commit a “war crime” outside an armed conflict. War crimes occur only within the context of international humanitarian law (IHL). Enforcing maritime law against a stateless vessel is a law enforcement action, not an IHL situation. No armed conflict = no war crime possible. 4. Lethal force may be used when a vessel refuses lawful orders. The International Maritime Organization's “Use of Force” guidance for maritime interdiction recognizes that disabling fire, even lethal force, is lawful when a vessel refuses lawful boarding, attempts to flee, poses a threat, or engages in illicit activities such as piracy or narcotics trafficking. Once again: law enforcement rules apply, not IHL. 5. Sinking a stateless vessel is not prohibited by UNCLOS. UNCLOS permits seizure of a stateless vessel and leaves the means entirely to the enforcing state so long as necessity and proportionality are respected. If the vessel flees, attacks, or refuses lawful commands, sinking it is legally permissible. Many states routinely do this to drug-smuggling vessels (e.g., semi-submersibles) without it ever being treated as a war crime. 6. No flag = no jurisdictional shield. The entire reason international law requires ships to fly a flag is to prevent this exact situation. Flagless vessels are legally vulnerable by design. Because a stateless vessel has no protected status, because UNCLOS authorizes interdiction of such vessels, because lethal force may be used in maritime law enforcement when necessary, and because war crimes require an armed conflict that is not present here, sinking an unflagged ship in international waters is not a war crime. Sinking into the church pew, I close my eyes, allowing myself to relax. Christmas hymns filter around parishioners as more enter the warm room. Fatigue washes over me as I wait for the Christmas service to start. The previous month was full of Christmas-time activities, lights, parties, and pageants. The seasonal hustle and bustle left me with little time to rest, my heart anxious over plans and the Christmas holiday. As the lights dim, the focus switches to the manger scene. Jesus Christ, born in a manger, died on the cross for our sins. Emmanuel—God with us. Hope was born in human form. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). Over the centuries, Christians have turned toward Jesus with hope and assurance of heaven. "The name Immanuel encapsulates the heart of the Christian message: that God, in His infinite love and mercy, chose to dwell among His people through Jesus Christ. This profound truth continues to inspire and sustain believers, affirming the reality of God's presence in their lives" (BibleHub.com).  The hope of Emmanuel takes us beyond Christmas. For believers, that hope leads to eternity and resting forever with God in Heaven. A forever reprieve from the weariness felt here on earth. However, as you celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ this Advent, you can also celebrate his saving grace and rest in him. You can look forward to eternal rest while enjoying rest here on earth, right here and now. God's word tells us to rest. God provided a pattern to follow as he rested on the seventh day after six days of work. Genesis 2:2-3 says, "And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation." In the same way, he reminds us to do the same. Advent time is a great time to start resting and taking time to enjoy what God's given. He tells us that he provides rest for our weary hearts. Exodus 33:14 says, And the LORD answered (Moses), 'My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28-30 continues this same theme of spiritual rest. It says, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Bible Hub study "Rest here is not merely physical but spiritual, offering peace and relief from the guilt and power of sin. This promise connects to the Sabbath rest in Genesis 2:2-3, symbolizing completion and satisfaction in God. Jesus fulfills the prophetic rest promised in the Old Testament, such as in Jeremiah 6:16, where the ancient paths lead to rest for the soul. This rest is a type of the eternal rest believers will experience in Christ (Hebrews 4:9-10)." The choir files into the church as the congregation rises. My anxiety lessens as I listen to the voices around me rising with the choir, still seated. "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Rejoice." I rise to join those around me, my voice lifting up the truth of the season. Come, Lord, come and give me rest. Help me rejoice in your birth this Christmas.  Prayer Dear Lord, thank you for your gift of rest. Please help me accept that gift and enjoy this Christmas season. Remind me of your open invitation when I'm feeling weary. Amen. We can sit and dwell on the fact that God is with us and that he wants to give us rest. One practical way that you can. Just sit and dwell on what God has for you this Christmas and release some of the anxiety, the overwhelm, and the panic over this Christmas season is to go through the workshop, Pen Your Way to Peace. In this episode of the US Navy History Podcast, hosts Dale and Christophe recount a lesser-known but dramatic encounter during the Battle of the Atlantic. On June 6th, 1942, the American tanker SS Stanvac Calcutta faced the German surface raider Steir. Despite being heavily outgunned, the American crew displayed remarkable bravery, defying the enemy until their ship was ultimately sunk. The narrative details the broader strategic context, the role of stealthy German surface raiders, and the vital but perilous duties of American merchant mariners and Navy armed guard sailors. The episode concludes with a tribute to Flight Officer Benny R. Carbajal, exemplifying the sacrifices made by servicemen during World War II.

You'd be honestly surprised at how many people were so deeply touched and effected by the event. Sorry for sounding so gloomy at the end, but sometimes I get bummed out. Not as bummed as the families of those lost on Gitchi Goomie mind you. With all that said, there are only two more episodes in the year, but they are really something. We'll be having our least nauseating visit to Victorian England in search of outdoor entertainment. And the last episode is our return to the Disaster Moviesode format by popular demand. In a storm that blew hurricane force winds on Nov. 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald — a massive ore carrier longer than two football fields — disappeared into the dark, frigid waters of Lake Superior. All 29 crew members were lost. Fifty years later, the sinking of the Fitzgerald remains one of the most haunting and mysterious maritime disasters in American history. On May 7, 1915, nearly a year into the First World War, the British steamship RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat off the southern coast of Ireland. Over 1,100 people were killed, many of whom were civilians from the United States who were not participants in the war.
