The Petersons seemed the ideal couple, well-respected, prosperous, and happy. All that came crashing down in December of 2001, when Kathleen apparently fell to her death in their secluded home in an exclusive area of Durham, North Carolina. But blood-spatter evidence and a missing fireplace poker suggested calculated, cold-blooded murder. Her trusted husband, Michael, stood accused. To bolster their case, prosecutors introduced evidence at trial that sixteen years earlier, Peterson was the last person to see his neighbor alive before she was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in her home in Germany. Attending the trial and having intimate access to the families and trial exhibits, award-winning journalist Diane Fanning's Written in Blood spins a heart-wrenching true crime tale that's been the subject of an acclaimed HBO TV documentary, "The Staircase." Diane Fanning, author of Written in Blood helps Kate discuss the documentary series The Staircase on Netflix. In 2001 novelist Michael Peterson's wife died, and he claimed she perished after falling down stairs at their home. The medical examiner, however, determined that she had been beaten with a weapon, which led to Peterson becoming a suspect in what would become a murder investigation. This series, which began with eight episodes in 2005 before being updated in 2013 and 2018, follows the investigation as it proceeds from Peterson's arrest to a verdict being reached in the ensuing trial. The real-life courtroom thriller offers a rare and revealing inside look at a high-profile murder trial and an examination of contemporary American justice. Pat and Nick from Another Below Deck podcast help Kate review The Ultimatum on Netflix, which follows six longtime couples who are at an impasse because one person wants to get married and the other does not. Sadly, Joel was found between his bed and the wall in his bedroom, butchered with a knife. Ultimately, Julie was convicted of the unthinkable crime and sentenced to a long prison term. In March 2002, award-winning crime writer and friend of the podcast, Diane Fanning, was writing her first book, Through the Window. Because of that book, Julie was granted a new trial where she was not only found not guilty, but officially declared innocent by the state. In the fall of 2021, Diane was a featured guest on a 20/20 episode on the Julie Rae case entitled GOODNIGHT, MOTHER and joins us now to share her amazing story.

In some true crime stories, the “good guys” turn out to be not so good after all. It's especially distressing when these “good guys” are members of the clergy. One of my favorite true crime authors, Diane Fanning, serves up a trio of tales about religious leaders that their flocks would have been better off without. They were respected, and even feared by their congregations. Even as the rumors they sought to cover up gained momentum, many couldn't believe what they were hearing could be true. A man who had given his life to serving the Lord just couldn't have done what they were hearing about…could he? Diane's website Buy the book

In Death on the River, bestselling true crime author Diane Fanning recounts a tragic kayak accident that left one man dead—and his fiancée arrested for his murder.A DREAM GETAWAY. A REAL-LIFE NIGHTMARE...It seemed like the perfect romantic afternoon: a kayaking trip for two on the Hudson River. But it ended in tragedy when beautiful, blonde Angelika Graswald called 911 to report that her fiancé, the handsome and athletic Vincent Viafore, had fallen into the choppy frigid waters. Authorities assumed it was an accident. But when the bereft bride-to-be posted videos of herself doing cartwheels on social media—shortly before Vincent’s body was found—suspicions of murder rose to the surface…After hours of questioning, Angelika made several shocking admissions. She said she felt “trapped” and fed up with Vincent’s “demanding” sexual lifestyle: the nightlife, the strip clubs, the threeways. “I wanted him dead,” she had said, even though she insisted that she didn’t kill him. But as more lurid details emerged—including a $250,000 life insurance policy—a killer question remained: Did Angelika remove the plug of her fiancé’s boat…and knock away his paddle as he sank? Edwin Hill is the author of the critically-acclaimed Hester Thursby mystery series. His first novel, LITTLE COMFORT, was nominated for an Agatha Award for best debut. The second in the series, THE MISSING ONES, will be available in September. He lives in Roslindale, Massachusetts with his partner Michael and his favorite reviewer, their lab Edith Ann, who likes his first drafts enough to eat them. Hester Thursby has given up using her research skills to trace people who don’t want to be found. A traumatic case a few months ago unearthed a string of violent crimes, and left Hester riddled with self-doubt and guilt. Caring for a four-year-old is responsibility enough in a world filled with terrors Hester never could have imagined before. Finisterre Island, off the coast of Maine, is ruggedly beautiful and remote—the kind of place tourists love to visit, though rarely for long. But not everyone who comes to the island is welcome. A dilapidated Victorian house has become home to a group of squatters and junkies, and strangers have a habit of bringing trouble with them. A young boy disappeared during the summer, and though he was found safely, the incident stirred suspicion among locals. Now another child is missing. Summoned to the island by a cryptic text, Hester discovers a community cleaning up from a devastating storm—and uncovers a murder. We discuss Diane Fanning’s latest true crime book DEATH ON THE RIVER

Michael Peterson was driven to succeed. An army brat-turned-marine, he saw combat in Vietnam, and returned a decorated soldier. An avid reader, his dreams of being an acclaimed novelist came true. His desire to find love was fulfilled when he married brilliant executive Kathleen Atwater, the first female student accepted at Duke University’s School of Engineering. The Petersons seemed the ideal academic couple— well-respected, prosperous, and happy. All that came crashing down in December of 2001, when Kathleen apparently fell to her death in their secluded home in an exclusive area of Durham, North Carolina. But blood-spattered evidence and a missing fireplace poker suggested calculated, cold-blooded murder. Her trusted husband stood accused. Then the most damaging evidence of all surfaced: Sixteen years earlier, Peterson was the last person to see his neighbor alive–before she was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in her home in Germany. A dramatic trial followed in the explosive final chapter of a life that no novelist could ever have conceived. With the popularity of Netflix's The Staircase, this podcast presents author Diane Fanning who wrote extensively about the Michael Peterson case in her book, WRITTEN IN BLOOD. The bestselling author of Under Cover of the Night recounts Laura Ackerson’s disappearance and murder in North Carolina, the discovery of her remains in Texas, and the aftermath… On July 13, 2011, Laura Jean Ackerson of Kinston, North Carolina, went to pick up her two toddler sons. It would be the last time she was seen alive... Two weeks later, detectives searching for the missing mother made a gruesome discovery on the shores of Oyster Creek near Richmond, Texas—the dismembered body parts of a young woman whom they were able to identify as Laura Ackerson. Laura’s ex, Grant Hayes—the  father of her two sons—and his wife, Amanda, the mother of his newborn daughter, both pointed the finger at each other as the one guilty of murdering Laura, cutting up her body, and then transporting and disposing of the remains. This is the hauntingly true story of a devoted mother, a disturbed couple, and how these horrific events came to pass.. Today I'll be joined by American crime writer Diane Fanning to discuss one of her incredible books, "Mommy's Little Girl" about Casey and Caylee Anthony.  This is considered the definitive book on that entire tragic case.

Sword and Scale True Crime

We finally have the pleasure of speaking to Diane Fanning, author of 13 true crime books and counting. She tells us the tragic story of Wesley and Jocelyn Earnest, a tale that serves as a fable to any young woman who has recently been separated from her spouse. This couple had such a good life ahead of them, but somehow it all fell apart due to the lust, greed and hatred of one man. It seems inconceivable to most, and the tragic tale is further highlighted and enhanced once you realize what a sweet and wonderful person the victim actually was, and what a monster her husband was. A man who was willing to do anything to achieve a certain status in the eyes of others, and in doing so he destroyed everything around him; a man who thought he was smarter than everyone else; a man who thought he could get away with anything, even murder.

It was planned to look like a suicide. But even in the best-laid plans, evidence is left behind…Jocelyn Branham Earnest was found dead on the floor of her living room in Forest, Virginia. By her side was a gun and a suicide note—typed, lacking a signature, and with one fingerprint on it. A fingerprint apparently belonging to Jocelyn’s estranged husband…Wesley Earnest was a respected high school administrator, poised to restart his life in a new community. Parents entrusted their children to his care and believed he was above reproach. But the investigation into the life the couple once shared would reveal adultery, troubled finances, and shattered dreams—enough for one man with murder on his mind to travel hundreds of miles…UNDER COVER OF THE NIGHT-A True Story of Sex, Greed and Murder-Diane Fanning

On January 28, 2011, the Tampa Police Department received a phone call from a woman who was worried about her daughter, Julie Schenecker. A devoted Army wife and mother of two, Julie had sent her mother an email that could be described as “suicidal.” When authorities arrived at the Schenecker home, they encountered a horrific scene… Sixteen-year-old Calyx and thirteen-year-old Beau Schenecker were found dead—both of them shot, then covered with blankets. Upon questioning, Julie admitted that she was “tired of the kids talking back” and just “wanted it to be over.” Had her manic depression driven her to the point of insanity? Or was hers a case of cold, calculated violence and manipulation? This is the shocking true story of motherhood, mental illness, and two charges of murder in the first degree. True Crime author, Diane Fanning, had several communications with serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells. Through that correspondence Sells confessed to the murder of a little boy whose mother had been convicted and sentenced for his death. Through the evidence and statements collected, her testimony was instrumental in setting free an innocent woman. She writes about the case in her book Through the Window.  Fanning says Sells went through his religious “phase” in prison, but it didn’t last. Why?

Trooper Trent Pettigrew will tell us what it was like to be one of the first on the scene for the Oklahoma City bombing. We will be discussing the tragic shooting in Connecticut, gun control, and delve into the topic of human nature and lying. Wrongful Conviction: While completing the story of serial killer, Tommy Lynn Sells, true crime author Diane Fanning saw the case of Julie Rea Harper on 20/20, a woman convicted of murdering her own son. Fanning’s correspondence with Sells revealed that he, indeed, was the killer and Julie Rea Harper’s conviction was overturned by appeal. For her involvement in this case, Diane Fanning was recently honored with an award by the Innocence Project.

Raynella Dossett Leath said she came home one morning in 2003 and found her husband’s body in bed—covered in blood, a Colt .38 by his side. But authorities were suspicious of Raynella’s story. Why would her husband of ten years suddenly commit suicide? And if he had taken his own life, why did it appear that three shots were fired?   David Leath was not the first of Raynella’s husbands to turn up dead. After digging into Raynella’s past, police unearthed bizarre, gruesome details surrounding the death of her first husband, who was seemingly trampled by his own cattle. Which led investigators to wonder: Could Raynella have staged his death, too?   To those who knew her, Raynella was a loving mother of two, a good neighbor and friend, a nurse who always reached out a helping hand. Was this woman capable of killing both her husbands? And if so: Why did she do it—out of greed, jealousy or revenge? This is the story about what dark secrets were lurking inside HER DEADLY WEB-Diane Fanning

SPECIAL ENCORE INTERVIEW-THE CASEY ANTHONY CASE-DIANE FANNING. This interview was conducted before the trial. We can listen again and hear what was known at that time now that the verdict is in and Casey is a free woman. When news broke of 3-year-old Caylee Anthony's disappearance from her home in Florida in July 2008, there was a huge outpouring of sympathy across America. The search for Caylee made front-page headlines. There were disturbing questions raised about Caylee's mother Casey and she became the prime suspect. In October, based on new evidence, her erractic behavior and lies and the signs of human decomposition found in the trunk of her car-a grand jury indicted the young single mother. Two months later police found Caylee's remains just a 1/4 mile away from the Anthony home. Casey pled not guily and professes her innocence to this day.
