Das dritte Studioalbum "Slippery When Wet" war vermutlich das wichtigste Album überhaupt für Bon Jovi. Denn bei ihrem Plattenlabel stand die Band auf der Abschussliste. Bevor die Band 1986 mit "Slippery When Wet" und den Hits des Albums "Livin‘ On A Prayer", "Wanted Dead Or Alive" und "You Give Love A Bad Name" ihr erfolgreichstes Album veröffentlichte, war ihr Plattenlabel nicht gut auf die Band zu sprechen. Nach einem ersten Achtungserfolg mit ihrer Single "Runaway" und dem dazugehörigen Debütalbum hatte man große Hoffnungen in Jon Bon Jovi und die Gruppe gesetzt. Das zweite Album "7800° Fahrenheit" blieb bei der Veröffentlichung jedoch deutlich hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Für die Band hieß es bei Album Nummer drei also: "Make it or break it". Derek Shulman, der später zu einem der wichtigsten A&R-Manager der Rockgeschichte werden sollte, hatte der Band geraten, sich mit dem Songwriter Desmond Child zusammenzutun. Dieser damals noch junge Mann sollte zu einem sehr bedeutenden Songwriter in der Rockgeschichte werden. (Später arbeitete er mit Künstlern wie Aerosmith, Kiss, Jennifer Rush, INXS, Katy Perry und auch mit der deutschen Band Tokio Hotel zusammen.) Jon Bon Jovi, Gitarrist Richie Sambora und Songwriter Desmond Child setzten sich im Keller der Familie Sambora in der Heimatstadt von Bon Jovi, New Jersey, zusammen und schrieben während ihrer Sessions mehr als dreißig Songs für "Slippery When Wet". Dabei entstanden auch Songs wie "Livin‘ On A Prayer" und "You Give Love A Bad Name". Besonders bemerkenswert ist die Arbeit von Gitarrist Richie Sambora, der sich mit dem Album sehr stark weiterentwickelt und seinen Stil gefestigt hat. Mit "Slippery When Wet" konnten Bon Jovi sich von härteren Bands abgrenzen und haben sich mehr in Richtung Stadionrock entwickelt. Außerdem haben sie ihren eigenen, unverwechselbaren Sound geschaffen, für den Millionen Fans auf der Welt sie lieben. On daytime MTV, Bon Jovi was becoming the biggest pop-rock act on the planet. Poison was setting the blueprint for everything pop culture now calls hair metal. At the same time, Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth: were building massive and devoted audiences. These two worlds shared MTV, shared tour bills, and shared fans who were being asked to pick a side. That tension is what makes 1986 unlike any other year in metal history.The Glam Explosion That Broke Daytime MTVHere's what happened between 1984 and 1986: metal expanded beyond just being scary.After Quiet Riot became the first hard rock band to score a number-one album in 1984, the genre broke into mainstream consciousness. Then the PMRC Senate hearings of 1985 gave the music a problem: it needed to stop being threatening. By 1986, the solution was in the videos. Make them colorful. Make them fun. Start somewhere relatable: a bedroom, a garage, a studio. Then escalate into an idealized fantasy of concert performance. Replace leather and skulls with neon and teased hair. What had been relegated to late-night Headbangers Ball slots now fit the 3 PM MTV daypart. The music and the medium found each other.Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet is the commercial monument to that shift. Released August 18, 1986, it rolled out singles for nearly a full year after release: “You Give Love a Bad Name” in July, “Livin' on a Prayer” in October, “Wanted Dead or Alive” the following March, “Never Say Goodbye” in June of 1987. Each one was bigger than the last. The year before, Bon Jovi had been opening for Billy Squier. The key differentiator from their earlier work: the arrival of Desmond Child as co-writer on the two biggest singles, bringing professional hit-making infrastructure to what was already a committed band.Poison's Look What the Cat Dragged In was doing the same thing with less money. Their starting address was Enigma Records, home to They Might Be Giants, The Cramps, Dead Milkmen, and Devo. An underground punk label, not a hair metal machine. Capitol entered the picture later, which explains why “Cry Tough” barely moved and “Talk Dirty to Me” became an MTV staple. Poison didn't just succeed with this blueprint; they franchised it.Van Halen's 5150 added keyboards and landed the best Sammy Hagar-era album in the process. David Lee Roth's Eat ‘Em and Smile amplified the campy fun of his Van Halen years into a career highlight. Cinderella's Night Songs made the sharpest glam debut of the year: darker and more concise than anything they'd produce later, before the bluesy detours took over. Jon Bon Jovi helped them record it. That's how fast the food chain was moving in 1986.The Thrash Revolution Running in ParallelHere's the thing about thrash in 1986: it wasn't hidden. Headbangers Ball existed. The magazines covered it. Metallica opened for Ozzy on the Ultimate Sin arena tour. But in the daytime MTV ecosystem, thrash was not the default. If you wanted it, you had to find itMaster of Puppets is eight songs long, 54 minutes, and sounded like nothing on daytime MTV or rock radio. It is heavy and precise and expansive in equal measure: a record where the title track alone runs over eight minutes and earns every second. It was Metallica's third album, the last one with Cliff Burton, and it was recorded without a single thought given to MTV rotation or radio airplay. No videos. No singles. Just the record, and the word that spread through tape trading, zines, college radio metal shows, and the underground networks that thrash metal relied on before the internet existed.What makes 1986 extraordinary is that Metallica wasn't alone. Slayer's Reign in Blood came out the same year: 29 minutes of something faster and more extreme than Master of Puppets, an album that even people who don't follow Slayer know by reputation. Megadeth's Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? completed what might be the single most concentrated year of output from the Big Four of thrash metal: three of the four bands releasing arguably their best records in a twelve-month span. Anthrax didn't have an album in 1986. If they had, it would have been a clean sweep.From the German side of the Atlantic, Kreator's Pleasure to Kill was happening simultaneously: the Teutonic thrash scene developing its own parallel lineage that would eventually be recognized as a pioneer of death and black metal. These weren't crossover acts. They weren't on MTV. But they were building the foundation that would outlast nearly everything in the charts.The thrash revolution of 1986 wasn't a secret, but it was a deliberate choice. Headbangers Ball ran late. Daytime belonged to Poison and Bon Jovi. You could be into both, but at school you were expected to pick a jersey. Admitting you preferred Master of Puppets over Slippery When Wet was a statement, and not everyone in 1986 was ready to make it out loud.Legacy Bands: Update or Resist?Every established metal act in 1986 faced the same question: how much do you change?Judas Priest's Turbo is the case study in what too much looks like. Their tenth album added synthesizer guitars and chased the MTV aesthetic in ways that have remained controversial ever since. Some decent songs are buried in there, but Turbo is the canonical example of a decade-spanning band trying on a new identity because the culture demanded it, and not quite threading the needle.Ozzy Osbourne's The Ultimate Sin represents a different calculation. The image got teased and colorful. The videos fit the 3 PM slot. But the album had Jake E. Lee playing with a flashy intensity that gave it a musical spine the presentation didn't undercut. Ozzy reportedly hated it. Others call it his best solo record: a bridge between his 1970s legacy and the glam-era present that actually holds together. When Metallica opened for Ozzy on the Ultimate Sin arena tour, the lineup said everything about where the genre stood. The scariest band in the underground, opening for a legacy act who'd made himself MTV-friendly. The irony runs deep.Black Sabbath's Seventh Star was never supposed to be a Black Sabbath album. Tony Iommi assembled it as a solo project with Glenn Hughes on vocals, Eric Singer on drums, and Dave Spitz on bass. The label insisted the Sabbath name go on it. The video for “No Stranger to Love” is keyboard-driven and barely resembles Sabbath because, structurally, it isn't. What it is, divorced from its title and backstory, is a genuinely interesting record with a remarkable cast. It has been submitted to multiple DMO polls. It has not yet won. It keeps getting submitted.Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time added keyboards lightly and reads today as the last album before the tinkering accelerated. Europe's The Final Countdown produced one of the most inescapable songs of the decade and an album none of us heard past the singles. The legacy-band class of 1986 is full of acts choosing between integrity and relevance. The ones who chose wrong are instructive.The Deep Cuts That Shaped Everything (and Nobody Witnessed)Here's the version of 1986 that doesn't show up on year-end lists.In June of that year, a Swedish doom metal band called Candlemass released their debut album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, on a label called Black Dragon Records. It did not sell. It did not chart. It was not played on the radio or shown on MTV. It was, by most measurable standards, invisible. What it was doing, quietly and without witnesses, was inventing doom metal as a genre. Every band that has worked in that sonic territory for the past forty years carries a Candlemass debt, whether they know it or not.Guns N' Roses' Live ?!@ Like a Suicide is a different kind of deep cut: a 1986 self-released EP on GN'R's own Uzi Suicide label, predating Appetite for Destruction by a full year. Some people had it. They read about the band in Hit Parader and Circus, bought the cassette, and wrote the band's name on their textbook covers. Then they came home from college and the cassette was gone, lost in a couch cushion somewhere, probably worth a lot of money now. That cassette is a small but perfect metaphor for 1986: the thing you knew about first, the object you can no longer find.The Transformers: The Movie soundtrack connects 1986 to something else entirely: the year metal started showing up in animated children's films, delivered by Stan Bush, Lion, and members of Kick Axe performing as Spectre General. For kids who saw the movie it was a first exposure to the genre. Our Picks, Three Different ArgumentsEvery roundtable eventually comes down to someone having to choose.Poison's Look What the Cat Dragged In. The blueprint for hair metal as a cultural phenomenon. The DIY machine that started on a punk indie label and franchised itself across the next four years. It is not the deepest record of 1986. But it is the one that most completely captures what the year felt like at 3 PM on a Tuesday when MTV was on. That counts for something.Metallica's Master of Puppets is the credibility anchor. The last Cliff Burton record. The document of everything Metallica was before the first video and the commercial pivot. Every move they have made since gets measured against this one, and most of them come up short. The underground case, closed.Ozzy Osbourne's The Ultimate Sin is the legacy act threading the needle correctly, or at least fascinatingly. Jake E. Lee at full power. Ozzy navigating from his 1970s origin into 1986 accessibility in a way that doesn't fully betray either. An album Ozzy reportedly hated. “It's hard to judge when these guys are progressing the sport that much, in such a short amount of time.” Among the vape stores selling synthetic cannabinoids, packeted magic mushrooms, and aggressively branded T-shirts bearing prophetic slogans like “It's Not Gonna Lick Itself” and “Slippery When Wet,” alongside racks of hyper-compressed shorts stamped with male first names that claimed ownership of the wearer's ass, stood CJ Hobgood. I know CJ works in real estate now, but after a week of bumping into him around the pool, I'd let that man house-sit my dog. Speak to any of the staff and the same name kept surfacing: CJ, everyone's favourite person they met, the most personable, remembered names, stayed warm and curious through the whole thing, just a genuinely nice guy. He was also excellent in the commentary booth. Sharp, articulate, energetic, strangely attentive. At one point he appeared to be analysing the aerodynamic implications of a competitor's hair bun placement. With an eye for detail like that, we thought it important to get CJ in for a full debrief of a week spent inside the beautiful, naturally exquisite civic labyrinth of Virginia Beach. The boys compare Hughie Vaughan's stale backflip with Eithan Osborne's backside-stale-body-varial-late-revert, straight airs versus rotations, Lee Wilson's influence on modern aerial surfing, whether hyper-technical progression actually means better surfing, the changing of the aerial guard, and the important hypothetical of Nate Fletcher versus Kelly Slater in a 50+ air comp. The goal was simple: each of us picked one favorite and one least favorite track from every album — no live albums, no compilations — and let the arguments fall where they may. We start with Bon Jovi and 7800° Fahrenheit. These 2 first albums straddled the line between AOR vibes, solid riffs, keyboard overkill, and rushed timelines for recording. The discussion revolves around early identity, flashes of future greatness, and whether these records are overlooked gems or simply necessary growing pains. Then it's into the arena-stratosphere era with Slippery When Wet and New Jersey, where a string of hits vaulted the band into stadiums and MTV dominance. Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet gave us new global superstars (and a few timeless hits), while Def Leppard's Hysteria was the comeback of all comeback records. From MTV marathons to the mix tapes we swapped, these records defined an era. Bon Jovi took the rock world by storm with their massive third album, "Slippery When Wet."  A big tour followed, and afterwards the band was anxious to demonstrate that they were not a one (album) hit wonder.  They got into the studio at Vancouver, BC in May of 1988 and quickly recorded their fourth studio album entitled New Jersey.  Originally going under the working title "Sons of Beaches," the band would settle on their home state as the name of the album.  Bon Jovi wanted to make a double album, but the record label balked, fearing that the higher price tag of a double album would impact sales.  The album still clocked in at close to an hour of play length, not uncommon during a time when CD's were beginning to stretch the length of albums past the more common album play times.The result was a stellar success, debuting on the Billboard 200 albums chart at number 8, before moving to the top spot a week later, where it would remain for four weeks.  Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote most of the songs on the album, with some assistance from songwriter Desmond Child.  Five singles from the album went into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with two topping that chart.Bon Jovi would go on to an unusual achievement - remaining one of rock music's A-listers for decades.  Bon Jovi would continue to sell out arenas, a feat limited to groups such as U2, Metallica, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones.  Friend of the show Julie Doran brings us this stellar album.  We are also joined by friend of the show Steve Hardin as we cover for the absence of both Wayne and Lynch this week. In addition, fan of the Show Christian joins us to help Rob bring his Staff Pick.  Bad MedicineJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora collaborate with Desmond Child in the writing of this song which went to number 1 on the US charts.  The lyrics are pretty straightforward, comparing love to a drug.  "There ain't no doctor that can cure my disease."  The video features hand-held cameras provided to fans at the concert providing their "point of view" at the concert.Living In SinThe fifth single from the album still broke into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100.  This power ballad has lyrics that explore love being more powerful than the expectations of society.  Bon Jovi is singing about his high school sweetheart, whom he would marry in Las Vegas while on the New Jersey Syndicate tour.Born to Be My BabyThis single is another example for the collaboration with Desmond Child, and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song has a lot of similarities with Springsteen, with lyrics about a couple of working class lovers facing the world together.  The video took the opposite direction from many highly produced videos of the time, opting for low budget black-and-white.I'll Be There For YouThe big hit from the album was this number 1 power ballad.  With a runtime of 5:43, this song is the longest song to hit number 1 on the charts in 1989.  The lyrics describe a guy desperately seeking to get his girl back, this time forever.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Put a Little Love in Your Heart by Al Green and Annie Lennox (from the motion picture “Scrooged”)Bill Murray stars in this retelling of "A Christmas Carol." STAFF PICKS:Armageddon It by Def LeppardRob starts off the staff picks with the sixth single from the multi-platinum album, "Hysteria."  High School Student and Fan of the Show, Christian, assists with his thoughts on the band. By the time this song hit number 3 on the US charts, the album had been out for well over a year.  The lyrics are a play on words - “Hey, but are you gettin' it?  Armageddon it.”Desire by U2Julie's staff pick has a blues feel and a Bo Diddley beat.  The song is both a critique of the glitzy televangelist making money off his followers, and the ambition and glitz surrounding a successful rock band.  It won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1989. I'm Sorry by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a long lost hit from a Dublin group that combines Irish music with an eclectic mix of soul, gospel, and rock influences.  You know, we all have times when we're "sitting back on our deep pile reclining chair" thinking about our lives and “looking over our misdemeanors, misgivings, misfortunes, and Miss Whatever her name is," and say "I'm sorry.”Never Tear Us Apart by INXSSteve closes out the staff picks this week.  INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence wrote the lyrics that describe a couple with an instant, almost karmic connection when they first meet.    This is the fourth single off the album "Kick" and went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:Wild Thing by Sam KenisonThe sultry sounds of Sam Kenison take us out with this angry cover of the Troggs classic.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. After leaving for two albums Joe Perry returned to Aerosmith for 1985's Done with Mirrors, which also saw the band moving to Geffen Records. The band was clean and sober, but the album didn't click with the public. In order to change that Bruce Fairbairn, the producer behind Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, was brought in, as well as an army of writers to make Permanent Vacation in 1987. The pattern was repeated with Pump in 1989, which solidified the band's comeback, and on Get a Grip from 1991. The latter became the band's best selling album, but was filled with even busier production, more guests and more outside writers. Right at they beginning the discuss the director of the docuseries, Gotham Chopra and how he is related to health guru Deepak Chopra. Then then discuss Jon Bon Jovi and his band and Bon Jovi's early influences including Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band and Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes. They then discuss his first hit “Runaway” and how it led to the formation of the band. They discuss their subsequent albums and then their breakthrough album ‘Slippery When Wet”. They discuss their brief hiatus, their comeback, and later the issues that led to Ritchie Sambora leaving the band. They then discuss Bon Jovi's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Jon Bon Jovi's politics and conclude by discussing their thoughts on the docuseries and the overall legacy of the band.   In the docuseries, Jon Bon Jovi is suffering from vocal cord issues, so in our second half, Ali asks Asif about vocal cord injuries. They start off by discussing Presbylaryngis or Vocal Fold Atrophy, which are natural changes in our vocal cords (folds), a condition which Jon Bon Jovi was diagnosed with. Asif discusses how sound is produced from the vocal folds in our larynx and what happens to the vocal folds as we age. After an aside about how Ali was the lead singer in a band, Asif discusses how presbylaryngis can be treated. The guys then discuss other types of vocal fold injury and vocal fold nodules in particular.
