Ann Rose is a farmer living off the grid in rural North Carolina, where she's spent most of her life deeply connected to the Appalachian Mountains and forests. After a series of droughts made farming more difficult, she found herself stuck and ready for change. At 58, she set out to kayak from North Carolina to the Gulf of Mexico. The journey brought unfamiliar waters, unpredictable weather, and more than a few alligators.Connect with Ann: InstagramTikTokYouTubeThank you to our sponsors: Capital One and the REI Co-op® Mastercard® Terns — used code “WILD” at checkout to receive 25% off your first order.

Amy & Dave Freeman are modern-day explorers who have spent over two decades on human-powered wilderness expeditions. In 2010, they completed a 12,000-mile journey across North America by canoe, kayak, and dog sled. Five years later, they lived off the grid for an entire year without re-entering society. No stores, no electricity, no roads, just the two of them, a nylon tent, and the frozen lakes and forests of Northern Minnesota. On today's show, I try to build my dream 5-rod arsenal, with a pretty hefty budget of $3,000. So for 5 rods and 5 reels, that gives us a $299 average for each, which was a ton of fun! We also have a quick update on an Elite Series angler battling scary health situation, another one of the legends retires, and we tackle choosing the right kayak length. Mike Keen came up with the idea of a kayak expedition off the coast of Greenland before he had any clue about how transformative it would be for his life and health and worldview! Today, he dives into what went down—what it was like eating the traditional Inuit diet (including fermented seal!), how his body responded to the kayaking and change in diet, and insights gathered by the microbiologists examining his stool samples (yes, his poop). Now, he has planned to explore more remote places and to continue diving into traditional diets to see how his body responds. A former chef, Mike now admits that he learned more from this experience kayaking around Greenland than from the many decades prior, when he was purchasing and preparing overly processed foods. Amoray Dive Resort is considered the only true dive resort in the continental US, with it's dedicated dive boat literally outside the door of some of the hotel rooms.I fell in love with this dive resort last year when I visited, so I returned a year later to interview the rest of their staff. With a fully staffed dive shop on site, gear, and even a filling station, it makes diving easy.I was asked so many times if this was “Amy Slate's place?” that I thought it was important to show the renovated room interiors, and how well-kept the place was. They retained the old Keys charm, but upgraded the interior where it counts. The boat is ideal for easy, family-oriented diving that caters to newbies, snorkelers, and shallow scuba diving. But don't be fooled, some of the best variety of shipwrecks are in the Keys and the Spiegel Grove is just offshore Key Largo, and Amoray does do dedicated trips for Advanced Divers. They offer scuba certification, dive guides, rental gear, and apparently are expanding into a live aboard catamaran option (I'll have more details on that when I return in December for the boat parade!). I should also mention they let you take bicycles and snorkel gear offsite to places like John Pennekamp State Park, and even have SUP, Kayak, Jet Skis on site. They also do magical sunset cruises, which IMHO is one of the crown jewels of the Florida Keys. But the thing that intrigued me the most about this resort was actually the staff. Just like my last interview with the owner of the dive resort (Jeff Gneiser), I am fascinated with how they can keep the vibe going with the resort AND boat staff, and this time after even more time had passed. So many places lack customer service and experience staff burnout in this industry, yet this place seemed to be the contrary. The staff seemed happy, the boat captain and mates literally sang and danced on the way back in from the dive, and everyone was in a great mood every time I spoke with them, and were actually helpful. If you just want a comfy place to stay with a genuine Keys vibe, easy diving or snorkeling, and close to the major attractions, Amoray Dive Resort is it.PS: They offered me a discount code for listeners:sweetwater25*I'm still working on that on-site Tiki Bar

Every July, more than 500 paddlers push off from Kansas City down 340 miles of massive Missouri River current, paddling day and night across the state in one of the world's longest nonstop river races. This is the MR 340, an event of endurance, suffering and transformation. From solo racers chasing records to 10-person canoes grinding it out over four brutal days, every paddler faces the same river. In this episode, we sit down with Kate Mansker, a racer from the very first MR 340 in 2006 who still holds course records, and Steve Schnarr, the race director who steers the chaos behind the scenes. Together, they chart the evolution of the race, the legends it's created, and what it takes to avoid the Reaper. If it comes after dark, it will be more of a challenge for you. To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either Today's destination is: Brazil.
