It's bonus time again here on Soundtracking, as director Jay Roach and writer Tony McNamara join me to discuss their collaboration on The Roses - a reimagining of the classic 1989 black comedy, The War Of The Roses. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman - with stellar support from the likes of Zoe Chao, Kate McKinnon and Ncuti Gatwa - it tells the story of a successful couple whose seemingly pitch-perfect marriage starts falling apart. It's scored by Theodore Shapiro, and also features two covers performed by Jay's wife, Susanna Hoffs from The Bangles in the company of Rufus Wainwright & Eric Johnson.

Tessa and Darrin have been dating each other for other three years and while things have been great for the most part, Tessa admits she feels like they kind of are in a “rut.” Tessa tells us that Darrin doesn't really dress up around her or plan any dates so she did give him an ultimatum a few weeks ago to see if they will take the next step. However, over the weekend Tessa saw that Darrin had been sending payments on Venmo to a woman named Isabel and actually saw that Darrin has been doing this for the past month and it's the first time Tessa has heard about it. We call Darring pretending to be a flower shop offering him a free bouquet of flowers and when we ask Darring who he wants them sent to, he asks if they can be sent to Isabel. Find out what's really going on in this week's War Of The Roses!

Link to family tree! Game of Thrones is typically considered to be the most popular television show of all time based on its massive global reach and deep cultural impact. If you haven't seen it, it's an 8 season historical fantasy series based on a book series by George R. R. Martin about different houses, different families, the Starks, the Lannisters, the Targaryens, the Baratheons, all battling and plotting and backstabbing each other to try to sit on the iron throne. It's pretty awesome. It's definitely worth watching. But this episode isn't about Game of Thrones, not the fictional one anyway. It's about the real life game of thrones that went down in 15th century England, the inspiration for the books and the show, the War of the Roses. In today's story the House of Lancaster and the House of York will duke it out, not for the iron throne, but for the throne of England an an unlikely victor will arise. Support the show! This week's Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt sit down, on Zoom and in person, with a cavalcade of cracking guests. There's Eva Victor, star/writer/director of the excellent Sorry, Baby, who talks about cats, directing themselves, and people who look like yams. [23:05 - 39:05 approx] Then there's Olivia Colman and Jay Roach, star and director of The Roses, the reimagining of the classic comedy, The War Of The Roses, who talk about baseball, guns, and terrible dinner parties. [59:50 - 1:17:03 approx] And, last but not least, Chris genuflects in the general direction of Sir Ben Kingsley, star of The Thursday Murder Club, as they talk about that movie, Sexy Beast, and Trevor Slattery. [1:42:55 - 1:56:29 approx] Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and, after a fashion, Ben Travis for a fun episode in which they discuss the greatest movie Chucks (and variations thereof), run their eyes over the week's movie news (and yes, the reveal of the Star Wars: Starfighter cast came too late, dagnammit), and review Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger, The Roses, and The Thursday Murder Club. Enjoy!
