My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Richard Kammen, author of the book Tortured Justice Alabama. During his fifty-year practice, Richard (Rick) Kammen was one of Indiana's top criminal defense lawyers and a nationally recognized expert in defending homicide and capital cases. He also defended numerous white-collar and complex cases involving alleged obscenity and healthcare issues.   Rick graduated from Ripon College cum laude in 1968 and New York University School of Law in 1971. Admitted to the Bar in 1971, he began his practice after service in the United States Army. Now semi-retired, Mr. Kammen still speaks to groups of lawyers and consults with lawyers throughout the United States.   When he retired, Rick began writing fiction. His first novel, Tortured Justice Guantanamo Bay, inspired by his work in Guantanamo, was published in the spring of 2023. His second novel, Tortured Justice South Carolina, set in the Low Country of South Carolina and Mexico, was published in 2024. Rick's most recent book, Tortured Justice Alabama, which fictionally describes the prosecution of a physician for performing a legal abortion, was published in March 2025.   Rick now lives and writes in Hilton Head and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.   In my book review, I stated Tortured Justice Alabama is a political thriller by Richard Kammen - and this is a book that will get you thinking about what you believe and why. Richard immediately introduces us to the main characters - a 12-year old girl, raped and impregnated by her cousin, her mother who only wants the best for her daughter, a local doctor who isn't allowed to perform an abortion because of state laws, and an out-of-state doctor who lives in a state with legal abortion. When the mother crosses states lines so her daughter can terminate the pregnancy, everything changes swiftly, and we are introduced to the attorney who takes on the case!   Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, I think you will find this story riveting. Why? Because few social issues - or the laws that regulate them - are as cut and dried as they seem. What actually constitutes the health and well-being of the mother - and who gets to decide? Should mental health be a consideration? Or age? Or rape? Or incest? Does someone of 12 have the ability to make these choices? Should a parent be able to decide for a minor? What if the parents don't agree? Can a doctor in a state allowing abortion be tried for performing one on someone from another state that doesn't allow abortion? When does the law supersede the doctor/patient relationship? And so much more!   This is a really well-written book that will make you think. The Wall Street Journal has uncovered that Epstein maintained accounts with more than 20 banks even in the years leading up to his 2019 death—among them, Wells Fargo, TD Bank, and FirstBank Puerto Rico. The documents show Epstein moved at least $60 million into Honeycomb Partners, received $13.5 million from a hedge fund tied to Paul Tudor Jones, and sold $15 million in private company shares to a crypto investor, among other large transactions. Although major banks like JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank say they cut ties (JPMorgan in 2013; Deutsche Bank in 2018), the Journal's reporting suggests their associations with Epstein ran deeper than previously disclosed.Beyond banks, the reporting points to a broader financial network: hedge funds, private equity, venture capital firms, and prominent individuals who moved money to or from Epstein‐controlled entities. Previously unknown payments also emerged: $1 million to Joi Ito, $85,000 to Alan Dershowitz, $250,000 to Terje Rod-Larsen, and reimbursements to former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers (about $1,232.25). She was found six months later alongside Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Amber Lynn Costello — the Gilgo Four.Rex Heuermann stood in a Suffolk County courtroom and pleaded guilty to murdering all seven women he was charged with killing — Barthelemy, Brainard-Barnes, Costello, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Waterman. He also admitted to intentionally causing the death of Karen Vergata, an eighth victim. He confirmed all eight were killed by strangulation. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Admitted Racist Stacy Horn. Classified as a White Woman, Horn is a New York native, prolific author and cat lover. A listener found her 7th book, The Killing Fields of East New York: The First Subprime Mortgage Scandal, a White-Collar Crime Spree, and the Collapse of an American Neighborhood, and gave it a surprising endorsement. Horn chronicles how Race Soldiers in all areas of people activity targeted the black and non-white populations of East New York. White bankers, White enforcement officials, White government officials, White realtors, White enforcement officers all schemed to devastate attempted black families who just wanted to pay market value for housing. Horn makes a point of regularly reminding listeners that White people do not orchestrate systemic looting campaigns against poor White people. This sort of terrorism is reserved for black people. Gus thought it was massively important that many of the Racists in this crime are White people who claim to be “jewish.” Gus T has been told more times than he can recall that black people and White people who allege to be “jewish” are supposed to be homies in countering Racism and definitely not the terrorist with their foot on our neck and hand in our pocket. The guilty plea Rex Heuermann entered in Suffolk County Court did not come from a sudden crisis of conscience. It came from a legal defense that had exhausted every option and a defendant who chose to negotiate the terms of his surrender rather than sit through a trial he could not win. The mechanics of this deal — and what they reveal about Heuermann's calculus — deserve close examination.In September 2025, Judge Timothy Mazzei issued two rulings that effectively ended any viable defense strategy. First, he allowed whole genome sequencing evidence — a cutting-edge DNA technology that the defense argued had not been widely accepted by the scientific community. Second, he denied the motion to separate the seven murder charges into individual trials, meaning Heuermann would face a single jury hearing all seven cases together. Trial was scheduled for September 2026. The defense had nothing left.What happened next is where the case takes a turn. During a proffer session — a confidential meeting where a defendant provides information prosecutors agree not to use against him — Heuermann brought up Karen Vergata. She was a mother of two from Manhattan who disappeared in 1996. Her remains were found in pieces across Fire Island and near Gilgo Beach years apart. Heuermann was never charged with her murder. But he raised her name in that room, and that conversation opened the door to plea negotiations.The deal is structured to Heuermann's advantage in ways that matter. He pleaded guilty to seven murder counts and admitted to intentionally causing Vergata's death — no separate charge, no separate prosecution. He waived his right to appeal. The plea bars further prosecution on any of the eight named victims. And his required cooperation with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit reportedly carries no enforcement mechanism. The DA's office is reviewing hundreds of cold cases across Suffolk County. Heuermann's attorney says the number stays at eight. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes historian and Admitted Racist Michael Phillips. Classified as a White Man, Phillips is “a scholar of Texas race relations, racism, and right-wing extremism, he has taught at Collin College and worked with SMU's Clements Center for Southwestern Studies.” While examining the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Gus T. saw some of the same names of people who are discussed related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Powerful Race Soldiers had many White Supremacist reasons to see both Kennedy and Lumumba terminated. Many of these Racists live in and/or are connected to Texas. While researching, Gus T. located Phillips' White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion in Dallas, 1841–2001. The book examines what it means to be classified as White and the local history of the System of White Supremacy in Dallas. We'll discuss White culture - which is basically lynching black people and minstrel shows. And why the Racist Power structure of Dallas is important to understanding the Kennedy assassination and Dallas history in general. Gus T. and Mr. Phillips had a major disagreement, and Gus accused Phillips of lying in the book when he wrote: “The Jim Crow system that fully developed in Dallas after the 1920s represented a more subtle and effective form of establishment dominance. Lynching had oppressed both black men and white women.” Phillips had no evidence to support how White Women were systemically oppressed by White Men in a manner similar to black males. White Women advocated for White Women's suffrage so they could reinforce White Supremacy. White Women made sure their White children had niggra classmates - which denied black children access to quality education, and White Women are the first teachers of Racist Women and Racist Woman.
