Gaius admitted he could not finish the film due to its historically inaccurate conclusion. The film's ultimate payoff—the removal of bad emperors and the return to the Republic—is viewed as fundamentally wrong. Gaius argued that empires do not revert to republics, as the republic was "aged out" and the empire was necessary, suggesting that Hollywood confuses the word "republic" with "democracy." Germanicus elaborated on this distortion, noting that societies frequently look back and shape the past into a "golden age" from which they have fallen. The founders of the American republic were informed by Rome and Greece, viewing Rome as a morality play detailing triumph, tragedy, and the ultimate loss of virtue. This tradition of distortion was reinforced by Gibbon's Decline and Fall, which packaged the later empire as corrupted by "barbarism and religion" to suit the ideals of the Enlightenment. This historical lens persists, leading to a simplistic modern conventional wisdom, especially prevalent in Hollywood media, that "republic is good, empire is bad." Hollywood fails to recognize that the imperial institution maintained many of the Republic's institutions and sensibilities. Furthermore, the media elite confuses the Roman imperial office with a "mafia don" or "banana republic dictatorship." Mary Anastasia O'Grady discusses how US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) admitted an erroneous entry record was created and used by Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes to jail Filipe Martins, an advisor to former President Bolsonaro. De Moraes used the apparently fake I-94 document, which contained a misspelling and a canceled passport number, to hold Martins for 183 days to extract information about an alleged coup plot. The Wall Street Journal has uncovered that Epstein maintained accounts with more than 20 banks even in the years leading up to his 2019 death—among them, Wells Fargo, TD Bank, and FirstBank Puerto Rico. The documents show Epstein moved at least $60 million into Honeycomb Partners, received $13.5 million from a hedge fund tied to Paul Tudor Jones, and sold $15 million in private company shares to a crypto investor, among other large transactions. Although major banks like JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank say they cut ties (JPMorgan in 2013; Deutsche Bank in 2018), the Journal's reporting suggests their associations with Epstein ran deeper than previously disclosed.Beyond banks, the reporting points to a broader financial network: hedge funds, private equity, venture capital firms, and prominent individuals who moved money to or from Epstein‐controlled entities. Previously unknown payments also emerged: $1 million to Joi Ito, $85,000 to Alan Dershowitz, $250,000 to Terje Rod-Larsen, and reimbursements to former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers (about $1,232.25).
