America's air traffic control system is a fragmented mess that will take many years and billions of dollars to upgrade. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy could spend his entire workday on that project alone, not to mention the nation's other critical transportation needs. But if you'll excuse him, the secretary is very busy right now declaring war on sidewalks that have LGBTQ-supported rainbow colors in them. The Iran bombings, public land selloffs, and the collapse of big city governance
On Saturday US time, 7 B2 Spirit Bombers dropped more than a dozen Bunker Buster Bombs on Iran as part of a coordinated strike on three nuclear sites inside the country. It came just over a week after Israel began its own strikes on Iran, which it said was approaching the point of no return in the development of a nuclear weapon. But it has left the world asking: is this a turning point, the start of a new conflict in the Middle East? Or the end of another one? On the podcast, recorded Sunday, June 22nd, Geopolitical Futures chairman George Friedman joins host Christian Smith to discuss what's behind America's decision to attack, what next for Iran and the region, and whether the US may be dragged into another quagmire in the Middle East. Visit http://www.geopoliticalfutures.com for world-class geopolitical analysis and discussion.
Send us a textThe world stands on a precipice as President Trump orders strikes on The world stands on the brink of change as President Trump orders strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, a move that could reshape the geopolitical landscape overnight. Using advanced bunker buster bombs, U.S. forces targeted the fortified Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan sites. Trump hailed the operation as "a spectacular military success" that has "utterly obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities. The fallout was immediate. Iran's Foreign Minister condemned the strikes as an "unprecedented violation" of international law, asserting that the U.S. has "crossed a red line." In retaliation, Tehran launched missiles at Israeli targets, escalating tensions in the region. The diplomatic path now appears perilously narrow, with Iranian officials doubting the potential for negotiation.

Food is one of the great bedrocks of human existence. Given its primacy to survival, it has also increasingly become a locus for conflict, either due to famine or as an exploitable vulnerability of even the most powerful countries. Russia's war on Ukraine made it clear that grain could be fought over in the battle for supremacy, with the whole world dependent on the outcome.Today, we have a special episode of the podcast. Our Riskgaming designer Ian Curtiss hosts Alicia Ellis, an Air Force veteran who is now the director of the Master of Arts in Global Security program at Arizona State University. She and her husband own a regenerative farm in Phoenix's East Valley, and she has specialized in the future of American agricultural security in her own research. She's also designing a game of her own, called New War, to highlight the complex interplay of challenges that come with new forms of warfare and particularly so-called “gray zone” tactics.Ian and Alicia talk about what it's like to farm in the twenty-first century, Russia and Ukraine's grain production, Covid-19 and beef prices, and the complete abdication of government investment in the future security of the food supply.

Almost as an afterthought, India grabbed several key peaks along the northern stretches of the Line of Control in 1971. Those stretches have long been used to launch punitive raids across the LoC, notably in 2016, and many Indian planners are wondering if seizing some heights would send a strong strategic message to Pakistan.
Mike Hixenbaugh first knew things had changed when someone on a four-wheeler started ripping up his lawn after his wife placed a Black Lives Matter sign outside their home on the suburban outskirts of Houston.Hixenbaugh is an award-winning investigative reporter for NBC News. He's covered wrongdoing within the child welfare system, safety lapses inside hospitals, and deadly failures in the US Navy. What's next for the battle over abortion? In this lecture, Mary Ziegler argues that undoing Roe v. Wade was never the endpoint for the antiabortion movement. Since the 1960s, the goal has been to secure recognition of fetuses and embryos as persons under the 14th Amendment, making abortion unconstitutional. The battle for personhood also aims to overhaul the regulation of in vitro fertilization and contraception, change the meaning of equality under the law, and determine how courts decide which fundamental rights Americans enjoy. Mary Ziegler is one of the world's leading historians of the U.S. abortion debate, and an expert on the law, history, and politics of reproduction, health care, and conservatism in the U.S. She is the author or editor of numerous articles and seven books on reproduction, autonomy, and the law. Russians who sign up to fight in Ukraine earn big money in salaries and bonuses – and the Kremlin is even more generous to families of those killed in battle. Average compensation packages for a dead son or husband are worth about US$130,000. In less-wealthy Russian provinces, where most recruits are from, that's enough to turn your life around. Reporter Arsenii Sokolov finds out how the relatives of the tens of thousands of men Russia has lost in the war are spending the money – and asks whether the pay-outs will help create a new “patriotic” middle class that supports Vladimir Putin. He talks to a woman who's used her “coffin money” to open a restaurant in memory of her dead son – and hears about a craze for ultra-expensive hair-dryers among wives and girlfriends of soldiers from Siberia.Marrying soldiers has become so attractive that women on dating apps often search specifically for men in uniform. But the compensation payouts are also fuelling furious court battles, when divorced or separated fathers who've played little role in child rearing suddenly reappear after their sons' deaths and demand their share of the coffin money. Besides the cash, there are many privileges offered to soldiers and their families, and to bereaved relatives of the fallen. Their children can go to university whatever their grades. And the Kremlin has started a programme called “Time of Heroes” that claims it will fast-track selected returning servicemen into elite positions in local politics and business. But can Putin's attempt at social engineering really work? And will “deathonomics” – as one economist calls it – really boost the economy of the provinces that have suffered most from the huge death toll?

It was an appalling image: the coffins of four Israeli hostages, two of them young children, presented on stage in front of a crowd before being returned to their families. Then in a cruel twist, it emerged that one of the bodies was not that of Shiri Bibas as Hamas had claimed, nor of any of the hostages taken on October 7th.Could these latest appalling developments derail an already shaky ceasefire in Gaza?Kamal and Gordon put that question to the Telegraph's Jerusalem correspondent Henry Bodkin, and ask about the mood in Israel and the potential role of Arab nations in redeveloping Gaza.Producer: Lilian FawcettSenior Producer: John CadiganPlanning Editor: Venetia RaineyExecutive Producer: Louisa WellsSocial Media Producer: Ji-Min LeeVideo Editor: Andy MackenzieStudio Director: Meghan SearleEditor: Camilla TomineyOriginal music by Goss Studio Hosted on Acast. Since the dawn of the chemical era more than 300,000 chemicals have been invented, and many are made from oil and natural gas. While some manufactured chemicals have indeed provided benefit (Disinfectants! Antibiotics!), they have also caused great harm. Manufactured chemicals pollute every corner of the planet. They kill bees, fish, and mammals.
