Welcome to Episode 2 of our series on the fight for the throne of England. This week we are discussing the life and rule of King Stephen I. Stephen of Blois was born into privilege and was, partly, raised by Henry I in England. He was also one of the wealthiest landowners in England at the time. During Henry's reign Stephen swore oaths to Matilda as Henry's successor. However, when Henry died, Stephen was the first to cross to London and take the crown. He ruled for almost 20 years, but he rarely saw a moment of peace. Join us we cover Stephen's life, rule, family, wars and death. Hey there History Fans! We're back and starting our new year with a bang of a series. What happens when the King of England dies and has no male heirs? He tries to pass it to his daughter- or hopes that it would. In the 1100s there was an 18 yearlong feud between Empress Matilda and her cousin, Stephen, for the right to rule England. On the first part we are covering the life of Empress Matilda, from her first marriage to a Holy Roman Emperor, to her second marriage into the House of Plantagenet. We also discuss her relationship with her father, Henry I, as well as her children, the nobles of England and the English clergy. On our last episode for Halloween, we are covering the Grandaddy of all Spooks: Vlad Tepes! His childhood was unusual as he spent it as a hostage in a Sultan's court. After being released he vowed to reclaim his throne and fight against the Turks. In total he would regain his throne 3 times. Along the way he implemented fear tactics and severe punishments; his favorite being impalement. No one was excluded from his path of destruction. During his lifetime poems, ballads and rumors were created about him. Since the publication of Dracula in the 1890s his legacy has grown to include being synonymous with vampires and the undead. Elizabeth Bathory has been known as the Blood Countess for centuries. Rumors have persisted that she potentially killed up to 600 young girls in the search for ever-lasting youth. But are the rumors real? Or were her accusations, trial and imprisonment all a set-up by the King and nobility to take down the wealthiest and largest land-owning woman in the area? Join us as we look at her life, the evidence, the hearsay, how the rumors began and her lasting legacy in history. For our second week of October, we are staying in France to look at the life and legacy of Marquis de Sade. Most authors write what they know, and he knew much about debauchery, perversion, depravity and torture. Themes and values in his life made it into everything he wrote about. His books were also mixed with his political views and can be viewed as a kind of satire. Additionally, he was an aristocrat who lived through the French Revolution, gained seats in the new government, was sent to exile, was in prison for nearly half his life, carried on adulterous affairs and angered Napoleon. He also believed in a life where he could do whatever he wanted, whenever, however and to whomever. He is also the person for whom the term 'sadism" is named after! Welcome to our first episode of Spooky Season! We are kicking it off with a bang with Gilles de Rais. He was a knight for Charles VII, he fought alongside Joan of Arc and was made Marshall of France for his accomplishments in the Hundred Year War. He was also a spendthrift who loved producing extravagant plays, with free food and drink for all. It also seemed he liked to dabble in the Dark Arts, alchemy & demon summoning! He is maybe most remembered for possibly being the most prolific serial killer in all France, with estimations as much as 600 bodies! Join us as we travel back the 1420s to take a look at Gilles' life, his excessive spending, his accusations, his trial, the evidence against him, theories, modern thoughts and much more! Note: This episode does contain talk about serial killings, as well as potential pedophilia & potential child killing. It may not be suitable for all listeners; discretion is advised. This week we are taking a trip back to Russia in the 1500s and looking into the life and reign of Ivan the Terrible. At the age of 16 he became the first Tzar of all Russia. With this came a lot of power and a lot of problems. Not only was he fighting wars with neighboring countries, but also the nobility who hated him. Over time he created intense tactics that would leave many to fear him. No one was safe from his rage and paranoia, not even his own heir. This week we are diving back into true crime with Adam Worth: the Napoleon of Crime! He started off as a petty thief but quickly rose to form his own criminal gangs in New York, most notably for bank heists. Eventually he fled to England and Paris, where he was followed by the Pinkertons. He would spent 25 years as the head of several international criminal gangs. His most notable crime was stealing the highly-prized Gainsborough painting of Duchess Georgiana. Though it's not known by many, his exploits would become the basis for Professor Moriarty, nemesis to Sherlock Holmes! Join us as we track his crimes, his life and his downfall. Nellie Bly was a very well known investigative journalist in the late 1800s. It didn't matter to her if the job was unsafe or against the social norms of the time; she had a life full of adventure. Throughout her decades-long career she: exposed conditions in factories, went undercover as a mental patient in Blackwell's Asylum, traveled to Mexico to write about the dictator, was on the front lines in Serbia during WWI, wrote novels, patented inventions and more. Her most notable feat was traveling around the world in only 72 days during a competition- which she did while traveling alone! Join us as we talk about these events and much more! This week we are taking a trip back to the early 1900s in New York City to meet the city's first ever female detective: Isabella Goodwin. Goodwin spent nearly 30 years on the force, mostly working as a matron in the local jails, then as an undercover cop. She was so good at this that over her career it is believed that she helped to solve over 500 cases working undercover. Her most notable was the Taxicab Robberies in 1912. Join us for a look at Goodwin's career and how she helped to solve a case that made national news. This week we are taking a look at the life of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. He was an unusual king with an unusual rule. He preferred to live in the fantasy world in his head rather than in the real world. He became overly obsessed not only with Medieval German folklore, but also the composer Richard Wagner, whose work also centered around German folklore. He was referred to as Mad King Ludwig, and the story of his death is as mysterious as his life. Special Guests: Katelyn & Stefan Apologies for the background and mic noises on this one. In 1880 well-known astronomer, Edward Pickering, made a remark that his Scottish maid could do a better job than one of his colleagues. He then hired her on to help with the catalog he was developing, and it would turn out that his remark was correct. In addition, Williamina Fleming not only made a decades-long, high-reputation career as an astronomer, but would pave the way for more women in Victorian-era sciences. She would also head the Harvard Computers- an all-female astronomy team, tasked with analyzing and classifying stars in the late 1800s. Welcome to Part Two of the Sparrow Wars. Today we are focusing on America's Sparrow War from the 1850s-1890s. When insects are eating away trees, what do you do to combat this... introduce a new species, of course! English Sparrows were introduced to the American east coast in the 1850s. They even became a fad amongst amateur ornithologists. Expert ornithologists were against this invasive species, which sparked a decades-long academic "war" in the ornithology world. Join as we talk about the key players in this "war", the outrageous slanders against each side and the unlikely reason why the sparrow population in America began to level out at the turn of the century. Edward Leedskalnin came to America in the early 1900s and settled in Florida in 1918. It was here that he built a mysterious structure, known today as Coral Castle. It isn't certain why Ed built. But even more mysterious is HOW. How did an 120lb, 5'2" man cut, move and install several ton limestone blocks by himself? Join us as we try to uncover the mysteries of who Ed was; who was this Sweet Sixteen of his; and most importantly: how did he build this alone. The theories are really off-the-wall on this one! Scrofula, much like tuberculosis, has been a very common disease throughout much of human history.
