Im Podcast "War da was? – Geschichte einer Pandemie" sprechen wir mit den Menschen, die die Pandemie-Zeit geprägt haben. Und mit denen, die damals wenig gehört wurden – aber heute noch darunter leiden. Alle Folgen von "War da was? – Geschichte einer Pandemie" können Sie hier hören und überall, wo es Podcasts gibt. A French-German weapons manufacturer ramps up production to meet the needs of France's war economy. An encounter with France's largest supercomputer dedicated to artificial intelligence. And how the Marseillaise national anthem has contributed to reinforcing French values and ideals. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, President Emmanuel Macron said France was moving into a "war economy" – calling on weapons manufacturers in particular to produce more and more quickly. We hear from staff at KNDS, a Franco-German defence group half-owned by the French state, about how they've managed to triple production of Caesar artillery and ammunitions to deliver to Ukraine. We also talk about the challenges of funding a war economy, given France's huge deficit, with economist Virginie Monvoisin from the Grenoble School of Management. (Listen @2'20'')As France aims to become a leader in developing artificial intelligence, it is upping its investment into building the computing power needed to run it. The Jean Zay supercomputer, at the Paris-Saclay university campus south of Paris, is one of France's most powerful, and is available free of charge for researchers. Pierre-François Lavallée, director of France's IT research institute (IDRIS), explains how the supercomputer works, its uses, and how the massive amount of heat generated by the calculations is redirected and reused as a source of energy. (Listen @18'45'')La Marseillaise became the French national anthem 230 years ago, in 1795. Written in a few hours, on 25 April 1792, it has weathered many a storm and remains a popular symbol of revolutionary fervour against authoritarianism. It has also been reinterpreted in France and abroad to serve other political causes, such as feminism. YouTube and Spotify have been competing for video podcast market share, and now Netflix is reportedly jumping in the ring. This episode analyzes recent developments including YouTube's Premium Lite announcement, Netflix's potential entry into video podcasting, and Spotify's strategic moves. I talk about why YouTube might have the upper hand in indie content, Netflix's strengths in cultural moments, and Spotify's rapid adaptation to video. Hear my two cents on how these streaming platforms are evolving to accomodate video podcasting, what this means for their revenue models, and what it means for content creators and consumers. Why French youth are once again under fire as the government vows to crack down on violent crime. The staying power of Ionesco's The Bald Soprano in one of Paris's smallest theatres. And why French women won the right to vote so much later than many of their European neighbours. In recent weeks President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal have been looking for ways to tackle what Macron has called a wave of ultraviolence sweeping the country. They've put the focus on young people, but not everyone agrees with the assessment. Critics have denounced the government proposals as reactionary, fuelling yet another "war" on youth. Sociologist Laurent Mucchielli, who says statistics do not show any rise in violent crime committed by youngsters, talks about why France regularly targets young people, and how it is often linked to electoral politics. (Listen @2'15'')The Bald Soprano and The Lesson, by Romanian-French avant-garde playwright Eugène Ionesco, have been running at the tiny Théatre de la Huchette in Paris five times a week non-stop since 1957. Two million people have flocked to watch the plays, which are performed in their original staging and set. But what's it like for the 45-member company, some of whom have been acting in Ionesco's absurdist universe for more than 30 years? We went along to the 20,024th performance to find out. (Listen @18'50'')French women obtained the right to vote on 21 April 1944, later than most other countries in Europe. Historian Anne-Sarah Moalic talks about the long road to equal suffrage, which required patient activism along with a bit of geopolitical chaos. And a woman who voted in France's very first elections open to all adults, in April 1945, recalls the excitement and pressure of her maiden trip to the ballot box. TRADITION's most recent issue features a special section with short reflective essays on the events of October 7th and the ongoing war in Israel. In this episode, two of those authors meet to discuss the topics touched on in those very personal pieces of writing. Chaim Strauchler engages with Alex S. Ozar, who serves as a rabbi with the Orthodox Union's JLIC and the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale University. Alex's essay, “War in Israel, in New Haven” captures the raw emotions, trauma, and fear of last Simhat Torah. He wonders: Is the Golden Age of American Jewry, in fact, over? He shares reflections on the Jewish experience on the Yale campus over the past number of months and what that experience says about the future of American Jewry. Amidst many frightening anecdotes, he communicates optimism about his students and the prospects for future Jewish success. Chaim Strauchler, associate editor at TRADITION, in his essay, considers how we might make the best opportunities of the current crisis, to grow and improve from amidst its ashes. Locating in Maimonides' teachings a call to accountability he suggests three arenas for discussion: a counter-narrative to the oppressor/oppressed duality; a renewal of Zionism; and ways to heal as a nation and a people. You can read both of these essays open-access in our newest issue.
In our latest Centre for European Reform podcast Dame Melinda Simmons, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Ukraine 2019-2023, and Hanna Shelest, Director of Security Programmes at the Foreign Policy Council Ukrainian Prism, join the CER's Deputy Director, Ian Bond, on the two-year anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. They examine the media's portrayal of the conflict and shed light on the mood in Ukraine before suggesting how Ukraine might navigate its defence production challenges and what Europe can do to help. Welcome to Scatterbrain Podcast Episode 159: War Remains. We just can't contain our love for Enforced. Their new album "War Remains" is out now, and if you love music that is fast, tight, honest, and intelligent, then you will LOVE this album. It should be no mystery how the 'Brains are going to rate this one. Already among the elite active thrash metal bands, this album will satisfy any true fan. Young and old. Purist or casual. Put in a mouthpiece before you blast this album, or you might bite your own tongue off! Then, Ian gives a layman's briefing on the UK's Challenger 2 tank that is currently being sent to Ukraine in limited numbers. The track record of deadliness and survivability with this tank should have Russia quivering in their collective boots. And when a murderous war-criminal is backed into a corner and tries to launch his nukes, he will get the shock of his life. Oh, treat and rapture! Listen to the very end for a chuckle with some extremely lame "Dad jokes". Thanks for listening everyone! Also on Instagram, Twitter, and the occasional Facebook sighting. "Scatterbrain Podcast with Ian and Dan" (c) 2023 Scatterbrain Productions. In memory of David Roberts. I'm in shock to learn of your passing yesterday. RIP old friend. You were a strange guy. Watching Russian troops invade Ukraine prompted us to record an emergency podcast episode on the recent developments of this crisis that is now a war. In addition to reflecting on these events, we discuss the tools available to Western countries to support Ukraine and punish Russia. We also go into depth about the role of sanctions in this conflict, including explaining the types of sanctions imposed on Russia and further measures under consideration. While sanctions do not have a good track record of foreign policy change, they are more than symbolic tools.
