This evening prayer, attributed to Saturday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Patrick Compline”. St. Patrick (389-461) is famously known as the “Apostle to Ireland”. He was a former slave in Ireland, who, after escaping, returned voluntarily to his captures as a priest and fearless evangelist.
This evening prayer, attributed to Friday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Boisil Compline”. It’s named after Boisil who was a great teacher, priest, and discipler, and who died in faithful Christian service in the year 661.
This evening prayer, attributed to Thursday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Ebba Compline”. Ebba was a strong leader, a woman who founded and led two monasteries. She died in 683, and was affectionally known as “a pious woman and the handmaid of Christ”.
This evening prayer, attributed to Wednesday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Felgild Compline”. Felgild became a monk around 700 AD and lived a life of prayer and solitude, overcoming physical infirmities and other great challenges.
This evening prayer, attributed to Tuesday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Cuthbert Compline”. It’s named after Cuthbert, who decided to become a monk after receiving an angelic vision. He served his years in honor and humility as a monk and later a bishop. He died in 687.
This evening prayer, attributed to Monday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Aidan Compline”. Aidan was a beloved and well-respected monk who dedicated his entire life to helping others and died serving his monastery in the year 651.
This evening prayer, attributed to Sunday night in the book Celtic Daily Prayer is traditionally called the “Ita Compline”. Ita, a woman who died around 570 AD, was the director of a community of nuns and also a boys school. This Compline prayer was named after her because it focuses on the examination of the heart and the petition for care and protection.
