When we express the depths of our souls, unfiltered to God, we receive in return what we most need, the Lord Himself. He alone is our Provider, Sustainer, Protector, Healer, and ever-present help in times of trouble. The more we recognize all we have in Him, the more we're able to say, “Father, it is well with my soul.” SUBSCRIBE to our sister podcasts:Your Daily Prayer: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-prayer/Your Daily Bible Verse: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Full Transcript Below: When God Upsets Us written  by Jennifer Slattery.  I will stand at my watch    and station myself on the ramparts;I will look to see what he will say to me,    and what answer I am to give to this complaint. Habakkuk 2:1 Have you ever been in that place? Where you've launched your complaints, or maybe your questions, at God, and then stood, arms crossed, awaiting His reply?  I've been in a funk lately, and while I've still been reading my Bible every morning, spending time quieting my soul with praise music, and engaging with God through interactive journaling, the other day I stiff-armed God. I sensed Him drawing my attention to a wound I didn't want to think about, let alone feel, as God was inviting me to do. And so, I shut Him out, closed my journal, and walked away.  This morning, I picked up my pen to journal, ruminating on a series of relational disappointments that, in many ways, led to my funk, and highlighted the wound God wanted to address. Internally I thought, “What do you have to say about all this, God?” And He met me in that place. Although He didn't give me clarity on my immediate concerns, He pointed me to what I most needed in that moment—a reminder of His faithfulness and love.  In Habakkuk's case, the Lord responded to his “complaint”, which happened to center on the seemingly unrestrained violence and injustice all around him, by assuring him that justice would indeed come and wicked nations, like Babylon, would eventually fall.  But that's not what most strikes me about the interaction between God and Habakkuk. What most encourages me is that the prophet had the courage to lob a complaint at God in the first place—and that God not only allowed this, but responded to it.  If you grew up in a critical, authoritarian home where “children were to be seen, not heard” and where you weren't allowed to express your emotions, let alone your “complaints”, you might expect God to respond the same way. You might, therefore, hide some of your most intense inner wrestling and doubts beneath a forced hallelujah. But while we must always remember God is holy, perfect, and worthy of all praise—whether we understand or agree with His actions, the book of Habakkuk assures me we can also come to Him authentically, unfiltered. I'm certain He'd much rather we do that than allow our doubts and spiritual struggles to distance us from Him.  Intersecting Life and Faith Here's a beautiful truth I see in numerous places in the Bible, the section we've been discussing included. When we bring everything, including our inner gunk, our pain, anger, and disappointments, to God, He uses that to open a conversation that, ultimately, leads us to deeper faith and intimacy with Him.  He brings us to a place where we can say, like Habakkuk did,  “Though the fig tree does not bud    and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails    and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen    and no cattle in the stalls,18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,    I will be joyful in God my Savior. 19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;    he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,    he enables me to tread on the heights (Hab. 3:17-19, NIV). Here's what I find significant in his response. Through his conversation with God, Habakkuk learned that life was going to become difficult for him and his countrymen. The land would become desolate. The Babylonians would conquer Judah, plunder their cities and homes, and exile its people. But the prophet reached a place of contentment, not in his circumstances but instead, in His sovereign, soul-fortifying God.  Pause to reflect on the words in verse 19 for a moment. No matter how chaotic and out of control our circumstances seem, our God retains full control. He provides strength to the weary and beaten down, and enables us to walk as swiftly, as nimbly, as a deer that escapes a predator by darting up a steep and rocky mountainside. In other words, He might not remove the threat, or within the timeframe we hope. But when it comes, He will give us the strength to overcome and tread on the heights.  To phrase it another way, when we express the depths of our souls, unfiltered to God, we receive in return what we most need, the Lord Himself. He alone is our Provider, Sustainer, Protector, Healer, and ever-present help in times of trouble. The more we recognize all we have in Him, the more we're able to say, “Father, it is well with my soul.” Additional Reading (biblical examples of wrestling with God): Habakkuk 1-3 Genesis 32:22-32 Psalm 22 Genesis 18:16-33 Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

Habakkuk does something that is hard but necessary. He wrestles with God. He asks the hard questions.  He wrestles with God. What is he to do with the evil in the world?  How does God look by when so much evil is happening?  Why does God allow it to happen?  How can this be?  Does this sound like a familiar line of questions to you?  Are these these questions that we struggle with?  In the book, we will see God respond, and we will see a path to move forward in faith. But I didn't want to move too fast to that. Let us first take a minute to stop and to wrestle with God. Let us ask those big questions.  God can handle it.  Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. The Promises of God - Habakkuk - God's Terrible Plan by Rev. Donnell Wyche - a2vc.org. Like us on fb.com/vineyardannarbor or watch our livestream Sundays @ 10:45am - vimeo.com/annarborvineyard Pastor Donnell encourages us to reflect on the nature of God's promises and our responses to them, especially during times of struggle and waiting. In his sermon titled "The Promises of God - Habakkuk - God's Terrible Plan" he delves into biblical narratives, focusing on how characters interact with God's promises through phases of receiving, believing, waiting, seeing, and blessing. He highlights the universal promise God made to humanity after Adam and Eve's disobedience, emphasizing God's continuous effort to fix the rebellion's consequences and asking for humanity's trust. Pastor Donnell explores the prophet Habakkuk's dialogue with God, where Habakkuk questions God's seemingly unfair plans and confronts the injustice and violence he witnesses. This interaction serves as a model for bringing our doubts, questions, and anger to God. Pastor Donnell points out that even in the face of difficult or seemingly terrible divine plans, worship and faith in God's nature as a promise keeper are crucial. He further discusses the impact of injustice and oppression, both on the oppressed and the oppressors, and the role of empire in these dynamics. Drawing parallels with contemporary issues of injustice and the feeling of helplessness they often evoke, he encourages bringing these concerns to God. Concluding, Pastor Donnell relates this to Jesus Christ's own experience with state-sponsored violence and his ultimate resurrection, presenting it as the ultimate example of God's power over empire and violence. He challenges the congregation to examine their own lives for ways they might be perpetuating mini empires and to seek repentance and guidance from the Holy Spirit.

Hey, it's Mike Henry with Follower of One and today's passage, still in the Old Testament, Habakkuk 2:4, "Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him, but the righteous will live by his faith." I love the last phrase in that verse. I love an old Rich Mullins song that he wrote that was about this verse: The Just Shall Live.   And, I want to talk today about how we get right with God. I think it's interesting because I always thought that getting right with God meant that I had to live according to a bunch of rules. I had to check the boxes and do the right things. I had to be baptized and go to church and do this and do that.   And I love the way now that I think about this verse, because I think Jesus has flipped it in my mind. When I live by faith, I do what Jesus says. There are days when Jesus tells me I need to go to church, or I need to tell the truth, or I need not to eat that extra dessert. When I'm living by faith, I listen to Jesus. I follow him. I am a Follower of One.    When I'm living by faith, I'm righteous. I'm doing the things that Jesus would have me do. I'm following Him and I'm in line with Him. I'm in the Jesus groove, doing the things that Jesus would have me do. It's not that I'm trying to obey a certain set of rules. I'm trying to conform my life to the direction set for it by my Creator, by the person who gave me life and who put me here. And we're also told in Ephesians 2:10 that He gives each of us a job to do, that He created us for good works that He prepared beforehand, that we would walk in them. "Behold as for the proud one," the one who goes his own way, which is what I tend to do.   I can be one of the most arrogant, proud people I know, and when I do, my soul is not right within me. I'm wrong, I'm broken, I'm off track. I'm out of the groove. I'm not operating according to those things that I was created to do. But when I live by faith, when I put my trust in Jesus and I do what He tells me to do on a moment by moment basis, I'm righteous. That's how you get right with God. It's not about doing the things, the rules that other people cast on you, it's about following and obeying Jesus.    Today in our workplaces, I would like to challenge us. Today, let's listen to God, ask him what He would have us do. Remember, our first prayer is to punch in. Here I am lord, put me to work. Let's punch in and ask him to show us what He would have us do for the people that we will interact with today. And then when we hear a word from him, when we get an idea, if you pray and all of the sudden you get this wild idea, you can pretty much bet it was Jesus. If that wild idea lines up with scripture, find a way to do it, find a way to solve for that.   Whatever idea came into your brain, find a way to implement it. You can believe that you're following Jesus. You're living by faith, living by trusting Him. Listen also to other believers in your life, attend church and listen to the leadership of your church. Have other Christians who are involved, and read the scripture.   But when we talk to Jesus and He gives us ideas, let's find ways to do them. Today, give away a little bit of your life to the people that you work with. Ask Him, ask God to show you what to do, and then do it. Thanks for being a marketplace minister. And thank you for following Jesus at work for living by your faith.   That makes us righteous. Let's do that today so that Jesus will be visible in our world. Thanks very much.

I wish more people knew God not only as the God of justice, but also as the God of mercy and grace. You and I received the indescribable gift of grace from God through Jesus Christ. Grace is getting what we don't deserve. Mercy—on the other hand—is not getting what we do deserve. Psalm 103:10 says that God “does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” Psalm 103 isn't the only place in the Bible that makes note of God's mercy. All you have to do is search the Bible for the words “mercy”, “mercies” and “merciful” to see that God is well known for this much-appreciated attribute. I've heard it said that people want justice for those who harm them and mercy when they do harm. I am deeply thankful that with God, mercy always triumphs over justice. While it's true that God will not let the guilty go unpunished, it's also true that all who believe in Jesus are covered by his redemptive blood. 1 Thessalonians 5:9 says that, “God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The prophet, Habakkuk lived long before Jesus walked the earth and paid the debt owed for our sins. But even in Old Testament times—a period of history marked by the wrath of God—Habakkuk still knew God as a God of mercy. Those on this side of the cross have even more reasons to know of God's love and compassion, his patience and kindness, his grace and mercy. Let's affirm that we have heard of God's fame, and stand in awe of his deeds. Have you visited my website lately?
