So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
In this fifth meditation of our Lenten series, I AM: A Lenten Journey with Jesus, we slow down with Jesus’s words in John 14:1–6:“I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Jesus speaks these words on the night before His arrest. The disciples are gathered in an upper room, sensing that something is wrong but not fully understanding what is coming. Fear, confusion, and grief are already beginning to settle in. Into that moment, Jesus does not offer explanations or timelines. He offers comfort, presence, and promise. He tells them not to let their hearts be troubled. He invites them to trust. And He reminds them that He is preparing a place for them—and that He will come back for them. When Thomas admits that he does not know the way, Jesus responds with clarity and compassion. He does not point to a path. He points to Himself. He is the way we follow, the truth we hold onto, and the life that sustains us. This guided Scripture meditation invites you to bring your own uncertainty, questions, or unsettled places before God. Through several slow readings of John 14:1–6, you will be guided to listen, reflect, respond, and rest—allowing Jesus’s promise to steady your heart and remind you that you are not walking alone. Lent reminds us that when the way forward feels unclear, Jesus remains near. He goes before us, prepares a place for us, and faithfully leads us home. Following Jesus is sometimes presented as the easy road, a path of safety and happiness. Read the New Testament, and you'll see a much different story: following Jesus is a narrow road that is often marked by pain and persecution. On the night before Jesus was crucified, Jesus gathered with his disciples for the Passover meal so he could prepare them for what was to come. In the face of suffering and death, Jesus said, Do not let your hearts be troubled (John 14:1), and in the following four chapters he taught his disciples how to trust and abide in Him when life hurts the most. Every Sunday in March we will be encouraged by Jesus' words as he teaches us how to remain in him.
Who is the Holy Spirit and what does He do in our lives? Following John 14, we learn five ways the Holy Spirit works in our lives for God's glory.
John 14:12–14 - March 9. 2026
John 14:8–14, Sunday March 1, 2026
Jesus once told His disciples that those who believe in Him would do the works He did and even “greater works.” For many Christians, that statement raises immediate questions. How could anyone do greater works than the Son of God who raised the dead and walked on water? In this episode of Kitchen Table Theology, Jeff and Tiffany walk through John 14:12 and unpack what Jesus meant during the Upper Room discourse. The “greater works” aren't about surpassing Christ. They're about the mission of Christ multiplying through His people as the gospel spreads, hearts are transformed, and the church carries the message of salvation to the world. What We Discussed02:45 The Context of John 14Jesus speaks these words during the Upper Room discourse, only hours before His arrest. His disciples are troubled, confused, and struggling to understand what His departure means.04:10 What Jesus Did Not MeanJesus wasn't promising that every believer would perform miracles that surpass His own. No one exceeds the authority or power of the Son of God.05:30 The Key Phrase in the PassageThe phrase “because I go to the Father” explains the meaning of the greater works. Jesus' ascension leads to the sending of the Holy Spirit and the expansion of the gospel mission.08:30 The Greatest Miracle of AllThe most profound miracle is not walking on water but the transformation of a human heart. Through the gospel, sinners are brought from spiritual death to life.10:30 The Role of Prayer in the MissionJesus connects the greater works to prayer in His name. The risen Christ continues to advance His mission as His people pray according to His will.12:00 Small Acts With Eternal ImpactFaithful witness, loving a neighbor, or sharing the gospel may seem ordinary. Yet these moments often lead to lasting spiritual transformation.14:30 Faithfulness Over FlashinessJesus does not call believers to outdo His miracles. He calls them to participate faithfully in His mission as the gospel spreads across the world.16:00 The Global Expansion of the GospelFrom a small group of disciples in Judea to billions of believers worldwide, the promise of John 14:12 has unfolded across centuries.“Greater works are not about surpassing Christ. They are about the risen Christ multiplying His mission through the faithful witness of His people.” – Jeff Cranston
Is God pro-exhaustion? Does he lead people beside quiet waters anymore? Does he want us to be living in this kind of hyper-activity all the time? I don't think so. Thomas Kelly once wrote, “God will not guide us into an intolerable scramble of panting feverishness.” And yet that's where most of us seem to live. How do we begin to turn things around? How do we tap into a sense of peace that comes through his presence? Discover one practical step in this episode of Gospel Wabi Sabi.
In this message from John 14:1–11, we explore how Jesus meets us in the midst of trouble and uncertainty, inviting us to place our trust in Him. Discover the hope and peace that come from following the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the eternal promise He has prepared for every believer.
The Song of Moses 15 Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider[a] he has thrown into the sea.2 The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation;this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will […]

John 14:27 speaks directly into anxious hearts. As Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure, He didn’t promise easy circumstances—He promised peace. Not temporary relief. Not distraction. His peace. The world offers comfort that fades when pressure rises. Christ offers a steady, internal peace that holds even when circumstances don’t change. This verse invites us to receive peace as a gift, not something we strive to manufacture. When fear competes for space in our hearts, Jesus calls us to trust His presence instead. One of Jesus' longest teachings is found in John 14-17, in a passage of Scripture often called "The Upper Room Discourse." These are Jesus' last moments with his disciples before he offers himself to be crucified. His disciples are worried and anxious that their friend and teacher, with whom they have spent the last three years, will be gone. However, in these four chapters, Jesus offers them a message of hope and assurance. In our anxious generation, Jesus' message that he has overcome the world and given us a helper is our cure for our ever-increasing problem of anxiety. In this new series, we will see how it is that Jesus offers "Hope for Anxious Hearts." This week, Brent starts our series in John 14. In John 14, Jesus implores his disciples not to be troubled but to believe in him. The reason they can rest assured is that even though Jesus is leaving to be with His Father, he is going to prepare a home for them and leave them with a Helper. We have a home with God in heaven in which Jesus has prepared for us, and we have His Holy Spirit with us now, who is our teacher, counselor, and helper, who guides us into all truth. We hope you're encouraged by this podcast! If you have questions about our church or what it means to follow Jesus, we'd love to hear from you! How do we actually grow into the likeness of Jesus? In this sermon from John 14, Pastor Alex reflects on the slow, sometimes frustrating process of spiritual transformation and Jesus' promise of the Holy Spirit as our Helper. As we move through this season of renewal, we're invited to reconsider what change really looks like and how God's work and our participation fit together. Rather than striving harder or waiting passively, this message explores a life shaped by partnership with the Spirit and a steady openness to the kind of transformation only God can bring.

Jesus has 45 (or so) minutes left with His disciples. What and Who is He preparing them for?

We often refer to the first four books of the New Testament—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—as “the gospels.” But Pastor J.D. reveals that the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is all one story: the story of Jesus Christ. It's all the gospel! And as we go deeper into it, savoring the truths on every page of scripture, that's when God transforms our lives.
Jesus assures His troubled disciples that the Holy Spirit is coming to lead them into an entirely new dimension of relationship and fruitfulness. Today, we live in the fullness of that promise and in the miraculous reality of doing even greater works.

Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,' for My Father is greater than I.29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. In John 14, Jesus speaks tenderly to His disciples as He prepares to leave, offering words that have echoed through generations: “I go to prepare a place for you.” In this message, Pastor Alex reflects on the hope woven into that promise and what it means for us to live with ongoing access to God's presence. As we sit with Jesus' words about being the way, the truth, and the life, we're invited to wrestle with both the boldness and the beauty of that claim. This teaching encourages us to move beyond a transactional view of faith and into a daily, lived relationship with a God who is near.
