In this first live Q&A of our Lent 2025 series Jesus in Galilee, Dom and I work through 35 questions from the more than 2,000 people who have joined the class — and true to form, Dom tries to honor every single one of them. The conversation ranges from the silver cups of Boscoreale to the Gulf of Mexico, from Josephus's gritted-teeth defense of Judaism to what a State of the Union address might look like if Jesus gave it tonight. Dom argues that the apocalyptic imagination is, bluntly, a loss of faith; that coinage was the only real mass media of antiquity; that nonviolent resistance was invented — not borrowed — in first-century Judea; and that if you want to understand what an autocrat is planning, read very carefully what the autocrat accuses his opponents of. It is, in other words, exactly the kind of conversation I look forward to all year. If you want in on the rest of the series — the lectures, the live Q&As, and the full archive — head to CrossanClass.com. You can WATCH the conversation YouTube ONLINE LENT CLASS: Jesus in Galilee w/ John Dominic Crossan What can we actually know about Jesus of Nazareth? Why did Jesus emerge from John's baptism movement proclaiming God's Rule through parables—and what made that medium so perfectly suited to that message? Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain. Paine’s powerful words came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution itself. General George Washington had it read to his troops. The wide-variety of organisms that formed on the North American continent, later evolved into the present myriad of life-forms that inhabit this corner of the world. During the mid-nineteenth century an English scientist put forth an explanation for our planet’s diversity of life—a fascinating theory of evolution that shook the Victorian Age to its core and still reverberates to this day. 1859 witnessed the seminal publication of «On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life» by Charles Robert Darwin. International Darwin Day is celebrated annually on February 12th (the birthday of Charles Darwin, 1809-82) to commemorate his foundational contributions to science, particularly the theory of evolution by natural selection, and to honor the "Father of Evolution" for transforming the understanding of life and the interconnectedness of species. On today's episode, we discuss what scholars mean by the “historical Jesus” and how that project differs from simply asking what extra‑biblical sources say about Christ or spinning speculative tales like a secret marriage to Mary Magdalene. Historical‑Jesus research is presented as historiography—the history of how 18th–21st century scholars have tried to reconstruct Jesus using modern historical methods while partially suspending full trust in the Gospels and early church tradition. The episode walks through form criticism and the influential “criterion of double dissimilarity,” which tries to identify sayings and actions most likely authentic when they are unlike both 1st‑century Judaism and later Christian preaching, along with the more aggressive “criterion of embarrassment,” which treats unflattering or awkward details—such as Jesus praying that the cup of suffering might pass—as especially historically plausible. The hosts debate the strengths and abuses of these tools, noting that they can highlight Jesus's genuine uniqueness and humanity but become distorting when used to deny continuity between Jesus and the early church or to strip him from his Jewish context, effectively turning him into an ahistorical “alien.” The conversation then drills into dense theological questions: whether the “Word of God” in John 1 refers to Jesus, Scripture, the gospel, or all of the above; how divine inspiration relates to fallible human memory; and why the Gospels are better seen as faithful, interpretive testimonies to Jesus rather than verbatim transcripts. Finally, the episode turns pastoral and practical as they wrestle with blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (attributing Spirit‑empowered exorcisms to Satan), Satan's temptation offers and “permissive will,” Old Testament figures like Samson and Balaam, and why, despite scholarly debates about method, the non‑negotiable center for Christians remains trusting the risen Christ revealed in Scripture. Don't miss it!

The Bible and the Cosmos: Which Story Comes First? with Dom Crossan & Phil Clayton

So Dom Crossan (JC) and Philip Clayton (PC) came together for this conversation I've been hoping would happen for a year and a half, and it was everything I wanted. We started with this question about why atheist political philosophers like Badiou and Žižek are turning to Paul because they need someone who has a militancy about being human that can resist civilization's death-dealing power. Dom and Phil had this beautiful back-and-forth about whether we should start with Cosmology or the Bible - Dom says both, simultaneously, which is a contradiction but he owns it. They talked about civilization as fundamentally violent since Mesopotamia, whether we're a sustainable species, and what it means that we can finally ask that question seriously. The Kingdom of God language came up as "kin-dom" - returning to our evolutionary origins where we lived in groups of about 200 people, before agriculture trapped us in civilization. Phil made this point about how our brains were formed on the grasslands of Africa for hundreds of thousands of generations, and now we're living in a hyper-civilized world where the devil looks primitive compared to OpenAI's $500 billion valuation. The hope is in asking the right questions, in returning to a kin-dom structure, and in Jesus sending out his disciples to do healing, not setting up a healing shop in Nazareth. You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube Join us at Theology Beer Camp, October 8-10, in Kansas City! As a scholar, Philip Clayton (Ingraham Professor, Claremont School of Theology) works at the intersection of science, philosophy, and theology. As an activist (president of EcoCiv.org, President of IPDC), he works to convene, facilitate, and catalyze multi-sectoral initiatives toward ecological civilization. As a disciple of Jesus, he finds himself energized by the Spirit in the Quaker community. John Dominic Crossan, professor emeritus at DePaul University, is widely regarded as the foremost historical Jesus scholar of our time. He is the author of several bestselling books, including The Historical Jesus, How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian, God and Empire, Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, The Greatest Prayer, The Last Week, and The Power of Parable. He lives in Minneola, Florida. UPCOMING ONLINE LENT CLASS: Jesus in Galilee w/ John Dominic Crossan What can we actually know about Jesus of Nazareth? And, what difference does it make? This Lenten class begins where all of Dr. John Dominic Crossan's has work begins: with history. What was actually happening in Galilee in the 20s CE? What did Herod Antipas' transformation of the "Sea of Galilee" into the commercial "Sea of Tiberias" mean for peasant fishing communities? Why did Jesus emerge from John's baptism movement proclaiming God's Rule through parables—and what made that medium so perfectly suited to that message? Only by understanding what Jesus' parables meant then can we wrestle with what they might demand of us now. The class is donation-based, including 0, so join, get info, and join up here. This podcast is a Homebrewed Christianity production. Support us on Patreon---Across the world, over two billion people believe that a human being is God. This confession of faith lies at the very heart of Christianity, a movement that exalts the life of a single individual far beyond that of any other world religion. But who was this man? What do we know about Jesus of Nazareth? This epsiode of Gladio Free Europe explores the historical question and historical personage of Jesus, an apocalyptic Jewish preacher from 1st-Century Galilee who was crucified by the Romans. Though this preacher is not attested in any contemporary documentation, his life and his death would have consequences more far-reaching than perhaps any other human up to this point.Liam, Sam, and Jackson chart the past three centuries of rationalist inquiry into the existence of Jesus, beginning with Enlightenment firebrands like Hermann Reimarup, moving through the development of mythicist speculation by figures such as Bruno Bauer and Arthur Drews, and the development of contemporary New Testament scholarship as represented by figures such as Paula Fredriksen, John Meier, and Bart Ehrman.Effectively all historians today agree that Jesus existed. Beyond this, there is not much certainty. Different scholars have different criteria for assessing the historical reliability of evidence on Jesus, predominately the Christian Gospels and the writings of Paul of Tarsus, but also roughly contemporaneous Greek and Roman sources, such as the great Greek Jewish historian Josephus. Additional insights can be gleaned through research into the Jewish religion of Jesus, the cultural and archaeological landscape of Ancient Palestine, and broader developments in Greco-Roman philosophy and spirituality. In addition to sharing contemporary academic findings concerning this peculiar individual, Liam, Sam, and Jackson share their own thoughts on the significance of the life and afterlife of Jesus. The earliest history of Christianity, as documented by texts such as the Acts of the Apostles, is enormously relevant to reconstructing the story of its founder. In addition, the spread of Christianity from an underground sect to the largest religious tradition in human history presents striking parallels with contemporary social movements. The Quest for the Historical Jesus, as so-described by Albert Schweitzer in 1906, thus holds profound consequences not only to Christians, but to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the human capacity for passion and perseverance.
