The original Jamestown colonists had never intended to grow all of their own food. Their plans depended upon trade with the local natives to supply them with food between the arrivals of periodic supply ships from England. Lack of access to fresh water and a severe drought crippled the limited agricultural production of the Virginia colonists. Combined with the lack of trade with the Native Americans and the failure of supply ships, the colony found itself with far too little food for the upcoming winter. E185. Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. Exploration lead to settlement, and so the lands along the James River were the first to be colonized. E183. World War One was a global conflict whose horrendous battlefields consumed a generation of young men on Europe’s Western Front. One such man was Canadian medical doctor, poet, and soldier John McCrae. His experiences on the battlefield moved him to compose “In Flanders Fields” which became the most famous poem of The Great War. Moina Michael, an American woman moved by the poem, was inspired to adopt the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who died in the War to end all Wars—her life's work advocating for veterans' welfare as "The Poppy Lady," spread this remembrance movement throughout North America, parts of Europe, and beyond. In 1622, a French explorer and interpreter Étienne Brûlé is credited with being the first European to see Lake Superior. Located between Canada and the United States Lake Superior is one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the world. In 1668, Jesuit Fathers Claude Dablon and Claude-Jean Allouez were on the Lake with Jesuit explorer Jacques Marquette, and they were the first to inform the world of the rich copper mines of that region. Other European explorers who visited Lake Superior include French fur traders Pierre Espirit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseilliers in 1659-60, and Daniel Greysolon Duluth from 1679–1686. People of Scottish descent who settled in the province of Ulster in Northern Ireland during the 17th century, and their descendants who later immigrated to North America, were known as "Scots-Irish" (or Scotch-Irish). This group, predominantly Presbyterian, migrated to the American colonies primarily between the 18th and 19th centuries due to economic opportunity and religious and political reasons. Today, the term is used to describe both the ethnic group in Ireland and their descendants in places like the United States and Canada.
