I think I should borrow the #hashtaghistory term of hasty history for this episode. From finding this historical marker and recording was about two hours, and part of that time was me getting a coffee. Some recent life experiences, and reading I had done heavily directed where this went. I don't think I will be this hasty again as I am not sure it was all together one thought, my apologies. Below are the links to my research and on Instagram there will be some pretty pictures. Don't forget to check out Klaire Lockheart who is mentioned in the start of this episode. Through previous historical markers we have learned about Judge Joseph B Amidon and his son William who were pioneering homesteaders in the budding Sioux Falls City and were killed by Native American warriors in 1862. We know Sioux Falls was soon evacuated, but first, they buried the bodies, so how are the bodies now missing? Lets read a few historical markers and piece together what we can, but I will let you know right now... The Amidon's are missing. Judge Joseph B. Are you guys ready for an History Hike? This fun little walk through part of the historic downtown Sioux Falls will be about 1.2 miles and we will read some different historical markers talking about Fort Dakota, a fort that existed on this piece of the prairie for only a few years but left its mark on the start of what would become Sioux Falls South Dakota so come along with me and find out all about it! First come first serve post card maps are available if you email me your address: localloupodcast@gmail.com Here are a few of the local businesses you will walk by during this History Hike: Ode to Food and Drink The Spa on Phillips Swamp Daddy's Intoxibakes Papa Woody's The Source Coffee Roastery Harvester Kitchen Juliana's Boutique
In some ways in my head I find it odd to have streets and historical markers named after someone in the wrong place at the wrong time but at the same time I get it. This story is disjointed but I think that makes sense in this scenario. I am so excited to tell you more about the Amidon's. Good news I don't think anyone reads this and full discretion I did the research on this then had a crazy week so I am sure there is more but ugh this is what I remember.... Hi Guys, thanks for listening to Local Lou. If you enjoy the show please share it with your friends on social media! I appreciate it. This episode I went a little off script so it does twist and turn a bit. My hope is that hearing about this treaty will make you want to learn more about it, I know it has been hard to find a stopping point for research so I sort of decided to not have one. The next few episodes of Local Lou will focus on this time period. Previous episodes Philander Prescott, Fort Dakota and Yankton Trail bridge also pertain. https://www.southdakotamagazine.com/sisseton-peace-medallion http://www2.mnhs.org/library/findaids/P2285/pdfa/P2285-00008.pdf https://www.nchsmn.org/1851-treaty-of-traverse-des-sioux/ https://www.mnopedia.org/event/treaty-traverse-des-sioux-1851 https://www.loc.gov/item/18010435/
This historical marker is an introduction to Philander Prescott. His name will come back up a few times in future historical markers, so after this you will know who they are talking about, because I don't know about you but I had never heard of this guy. I mentioned in the episode a few podcasts I have been a guest on so I am going to post links to those episodes before the links to some of my research on Philander. Hi guys I'm Local Lou this the first episode of my podcast. I will read historical marker 78 in Canton South Dakota. Even better I went and visited the marker and the grave of Lewis P. Hyde's daughter in law who died in Canton in 1877. Dont worry we will lean a little about L.P in the episode, and I will share those pictures on my Instagram. Speaking if social media I am getting those going as well and hope to provide pictures of spots I am visiting and sources (libraries are currently closed so I am doomed to online sources for now) you dont have to be local to like Local Lou, I already like you and appreciate your feedback so help me make this podcast more enjoyable for all. Thank you. https://www.instagram.com/localloupodcast/
