Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico

On this episode we are joined by the Sioux Falls SD indie rock band Shurr Jr. In 2015, siblings Nick and Frankie began writing music and jamming together in their mother's garage, drawing inspiration from Elliott Smith, the Avett Brothers, Title Fight, and Charmer. At the time, their sister Kelly Maxwell was teaching herself to play guitar, often listening and vibing along to their creations. The trio's musical journey took on a deeper, more personal meaning after the loss of their father, Frank—an influential member of the Omaha, NE band Fifth of May. In honor of Frank's legacy, the siblings turned to music as a way to channel their grief and keep his spirit alive. The band's name, “Sure, Junior,” is a loving tribute to Frank's iconic catchphrase. Sever your ties in South Dakota, just don't sever them from South Dakota. With 44 craft breweries and counting, and several of them located in the southeast corner of the state, the Sioux Falls craft beer scene may just need to be your next craft beer destination. So, sever your ties with the idea that South Dakota isn't about the beer. With Severance Beer Company on the scene, it's most definitely about the beer. And the people, too.The Sioux Falls craft beer scene changed because of a Xmas gift. When your given a home-brew gift for a Christmas gift, do you take that as a hint to create something bigger, or do you just brew a batch of beer and move on with your life? Scott Heckel, owner and brewer at Severance Brewing Co, took his Christmas gift to heart.Meet Scott and Melissa of Severance Brewing Co.Scott and Melissa Heckel may have never thought they were going to own a brewery, but all it took was a job that had Scott dreading Monday mornings and a Christmas gift of a homebrew kit. When the stars didn't align as originally planned, the brewery idea was put off for the foreseeable future. But Scott was able to see the silver lining and used this time as a chance to build his own severance package. And when the time finally came for him to quit his corporate job, he literally severed his ties, both with his previous career and with scissors to cut his ties. Changing from a suit into shorts and a t-shirt, on April 1, 2019, Scott walked out of his office and went directly into his brewery. And with Melissa on board as his partner and marketing team, the two may be working more now than they ever have - being parents, too - they're working for themselves. And so far, neither of them are dreading Monday mornings.Join us as we chat beer, severing ties, and not waiting for someday. We also talk about sustainability practices in the brewing process, a bit about music, and the South Dakota craft beer scene. Because after everything that these two have going on, Scott is also the current President of the South Dakota State Brewers Guild. Click here for the full show notes, including a few pics, events, and all the beers we drank.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. From Hogs to Hoppers: Trucking with Rooster

Steady At The Wheel

Welcome to Episode One of “Steady at the Wheel.” On this podcast, we aim to create a space where veteran truckers, new truckers, and potential truckers can hear stories of the road, meet and stay in touch with each other, and maybe bring a little of the old-school community vibe back to the industry. My brother and I grew up with trucking – our father was a trucker all of his life and we (two of six children) were raised on the road with him. In this inaugural episode, we’ll tell lots of great stories about Rooster, our dad Russ Allen’s nickname. You’ll hear tales of hauling hogs back and forth from Montana to South Dakota, during the incredible rough days of the early eighties when trucks were nothing like the smooth-riding luxury cab vehicles of today. Later, dad transitioned to hauling grain and soybeans, and those days have great stories of their own. The Steady at the Wheel podcast is hosted by brothers Jaxon Allen and Luke Allen. They grew up in the 80s, driving a truck with their dad, Russ "Rooster" Allen, in his old cabover freightliner - hauling hogs from Fairfield MT back east to South Dakota. Trucking was a family business and the brothers worked and rode alongside Rooster during every season of the year from age 2 through high school and beyond. From scabbed knuckles that wouldn’t heal, to dangerous near-misses with boars and hogs, to breathing soybean and straw dust, what may seem harsh to some was just the way it was back then and the boys are who they are today because of it. Tune in to future episodes of Steady at the Wheel to hear great old-school stories, entertainment, news, education, and mentorship aimed at a trucking industry audience. Discussion points: Our goals for this podcast Growing up with Rooster, our dad, a lifelong trucker Trucking schools don’t tell you about the true life on the road Our earliest memories of trucking livestock Hauling hogs from Fairfield Montana to Sioux Falls SD - logging millions of miles Trials and tribulations – hog hauling stories with dad New wheels - the big transition from spring-ride to air-ride in the 90s Later transitions – from hogs to grain The “warm up” before basketball games – hand shoveling thousands of pounds of grain Get in touch with us on our socials, we want to hear from you! Tom Billeter (born February 12, 1961) is an American college basketball coach, currently the head coach at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He previously has been the head coach at North Dakota State University, as well as holding assistant coaching roles at a number of NCAA Division I colleges. He led Augustana to the 2016 NCAA Division II national championship and was named the national coach of the year in that season. Billeter is from Byron, Illinois and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He began his coaching career as a high school coach, then made his entry into college coaching as an assistant to Lute Olson at Arizona. He then moved to Rice under Scott Thompson. He was hired as head coach of then-Division II North Dakota State, where he led the Bison to four consecutive 20-win seasons in his five seasons at the helm (from 1992 to 1997).[1] He left the school, despite his success, to take an assistant coaching job at high profile Division I program St. John's.[2] After a year at St. John's, then five seasons as an assistant at Texas A&M, Billeter was hired as head coach at Augustana in 2003.[3] After going 42–69 in his first four seasons, he then led the Vikings to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2008 to 2010. Billeter received the Clarence Gaines Coach of the Year award in 2013.[4] In the 2014–15 season, the Vikings went 31–3 but were knocked out of the 2015 NCAA Tournament by Northwest Missouri in the second round.[5] The Vikings avenged the loss the following season as they went 34–2 behind national player of the year Dan Jansen and won the school's first national championship. Billeter was named the national Division II coach of the year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) at the conclusion of the season.[6] On January 26, 2019, Billeter won his 300th game as Augustana Vikings coach.[7] tom.billeter@augie.edu --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support
