It is from this environment that our young women begin to formulate their identity, their sense of potential and their dreams for the future.IseeU was launched eight years and offers a three-year mentorship programme supporting young female students from Grade 10 to 12, who are from the Cape Flats.The name IseeU was inspired by one of the young women participating in the programme – who shared that she felt seen, for the first time in her life. Building a future starts with feeling seen.Today, we'll explore some of Hayley's journey in co-founding IseeU, including:Growing up in Apartheid South Africa and the story of a mentor who saw her potential, believed in her, and helped her to feel deeply seen. Disney Parks, Experiences and Products reported quarterly revenue of $7.4 billion, up from $4.3 billion a year earlier. Last year, Disney Cruise Line was still shut down and the parks were still recovering, but this is still great news. However, there was one comment that made Disneyland fans upset. Batuu Bounty Hunters has already launched in Walt Disney World's version of Batuu, and will launch at Disneyland when the MagicBand+ system launches by the end of the year. The game will require the Play Disney Parks app and a MagicBand+. The MagicBand+ will change colors depending on if you are heading in the right direction and change to purple when the bounty is found. BMW Group South Africa (BMW SA) has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) range with the addition of the i4 and iX3. The BMW i4 is a four-door gran coupé and the German car maker's first purely electric model focused squarely on driving dynamics from the outset. Initially only one model variant will be available from launch – the BMW i4 M50. This performance model uses one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear to deliver system output of 400 kW. True to the spirit of the M range, the vehicle can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. Range is up to 510 km. In a short mid-journey stop at a high-power charging station, the car's range can be increased by as much as 140 km within 10 minutes from a 10% charge level. The BMW i4 model in South Africa is supplied with the BMW charging card, a flexible fast charger for charging at up to 11 kW and a mode 2 charging cable. The vehicle is priced at R1.6-million. The BMW iX3 sports activity vehicle is the electric version of the X3 made in Pretoria at the Rosslyn plant. The range of the vehicle before the battery is depleted is up to 460 km, with ten-minute fast charging adding around 100 km of range. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h happens in 6.8 seconds. The vehicle is priced from R1.29-million. With the internal combustion engine BMW X3 made in South Africa, is there an opportunity for its electric sibling to be produced locally? BMW SA spokesperson Hailey Philander says it is not possible for the local company to comment on future production plans. However, she adds that the Rosslyn plant remains “an important part” of the global BMW group production network. “Currently, up to 96% of BMW X3 production is destined for export markets and many of the markets that BMW group plant Rosslyn traditionally supplies are shifting towards EVs. “The BMW group is considering the introduction of electrified drivetrain vehicles for future production at BMW group plant Rosslyn,” notes Philander. “Key to this, though, would be a review of the local industrial policy to, in particular, support the expansion of general infrastructure projects, and foster an environment that supports the local manufacture of EVs and EV components. “BMW SA has been – and continues to – work closely with government and other stakeholders in the country to advance the electromobility agenda in South Africa. We welcome any developments that can encourage the wider adoption of electromobility in South Africa.” Government is yet to complete its sector support and development policy for the local manufacture and introduction of EVs. The term ‘electrified vehicle' includes hybrids and plug-in-hybrids.

Growing up in South Africa under apartheid, George Philander had to follow a lot of laws that didn't make sense to him, e.g., that he was not allowed to stand in the line for white people at the post office. When he discovered mathematics and science, he was happy to have found a world that was governed by rational and coherent laws."South Africa [...] was a strange place because of the apartheid policies. I basically lived in two worlds that didn't really intersect. The one was the social world, which was subject to these strange laws. And at the same time, I was becoming a scientist, and the world of science seemed an escape from the irrationalities of the apartheid laws."George left South Africa in the 1960s to go to graduate school at Harvard, where he decided to move into oceanography. Apart from taking classes and doing research, he also continued to be interested in social concerns, and on weekends he would join people in protesting the war in Vietnam, or even the apartheid in South Africa.Despite all the differences between the U.S. and South Africa, George also sees some fundamental parallels between these two stages of his life:"So now I could again do the science and separate the social life [from it]. But the science was much more interesting, and the social life was much more interesting. So it was a somehow idealized version of what I had experienced in South Africa."After completing his PhD, George went on to do a postdoc with Jule Charney at MIT, before moving to Princeton where he spent the rest of his career, first at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics lab and then as a professor at Princeton University, from where he retired a few years ago. George is a giant in climate science and has made many important contributions to the field, but he is best known for his key advances in our understanding of the El Niño-southern oscillation phenomenon, or ENSO.Throughout the years, George has been thinking a lot about how science interacts with the larger world, and he has become convinced that we should not divorce our social concerns from our professional activities. That recognition even led George back to South Africa for a few years in the 2000s, where his goal was to instill an appreciation for nature in young people:"We're so focused on the gloom and doom of global warming that we count on fear to persuade people to take care of planet Earth. And I would argue that instead of fear, they should do it out of love for the planet. But you can only love what you know, so they should really know something about the planet before we can expect them to take care of it."In this conversation, George also talks about the role of luck in people's lives and careers, about shortcomings of the educational system, and about living far from home.The interview with George Philander was recorded in February 2021. The smells at the Disney Parks and Resorts make for some of the most emotional memories on a Disney Vacation. Whether we're visiting Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, or any other Disney destination, what we smell is not only memorable but also completely intentional. However, since the 1980s, the land that was once the best that Disneyland had to offer has slipped into being the worst land at Walt's original Magic Kingdom. Som släktforskare kan man ibland hitta de mest oväntade fynd i sina anor. Så var det till exempel för Anita Mellberg som häpnade när hon insåg att en av hennes rötter sträckte sig ända till Indonesien och en slavmarknad i Kina. 1766 låg det svenska ostindiska kompaniets skepp "Stockholms slott" utanför Kanton i Kina. De skulle som brukligt var, föra med sig te, porslin och kryddor hem till Sverige. Men den här gången kom skeppet att också ha med sig tre små slavpojkar. Kaptenen på skeppet hette Carl Gustav Ekeberg och beskrevs av sin samtid som en alldeles ovanligt godhjärtad människa. Hur det gick till när han och hans kollegor köpte de tre pojkarna vet ingen idag, men till Sverige kom till slut pojken som kom att bli Anita Mellbergs anfader och som här fick namnet Pehr Philander. På Anita Mellbergs köksbord i Tillberga utanför Västerås ligger handlingarna som berättar om Pehr Philanders märkliga öde. Pehr som var hennes farfars mormors morfar. 1766 låg det Svenska ostindiska kompaniets skepp Stockholms slott utanför Kanton i Kina. De skulle som brukligt var, föra med sig te, porslin och kryddor hem till Sverige. Men den här gången kom skeppet att också ha med sig 3 små indonesiska slavpojkar till Sverige. Kaptenen på skeppet hette Carl Gustav Ekeberg och beskrevs av sin samtid som en alldeles ovanligt godhjärtad människa. Han hade köpt en av de tre små pojkarna, som i Sverige fick namnet Pehr Philander. Anita Mellberg i Västerås räknar sina anor från Pehr Philander och hon har just fått klart för sig vilken dramatisk historia han har. -Kapten Ekeberg köpte den lille pojken för 1800 kopparmynt. Jag vet inte hur mycket pengar det motsvarar idag men jag skulle tro att det var en ansenlig summa pengar som kaptenen fick betala, säger hon. Kaptenen lär ha varit en väldigt godhjärtad person – och det var ju min smala lycka, annars hade jag ju inte suttit här idag! Alla de tre pojkarna var uppskattningsvis mellan sex och åtta år. Enligt historien så var det holländare som hade tagit dem till fånga och som nu skulle sälja dem. När kapten Ekeberg dog många år senare så berättades historien om de tre pojkarna vid hans begravning. Dessa slavar voro 3:ne Malej-gossar från stranden av ön Neaz, på västra kusten av Sumatra; de hade där under fredens lugn och palmträdens skugga i sin barndoms oskyldiga joller och lekar glätt sig och sina föräldrar, tills det olyckliga ögnablick, då några försåtlige Holländare rusat fram, fjättrat och släpat dem med sig, så att i stället för det nejden av samma strand förut gav ett glättigt eko av de oskyldigas lek och dans, förbyttes detta snart till ett bedrövligt återskall från tröstlösa föräldrars suck och skrän, som kanske räcker än i denna stund! -Det sägs att Holländarna som höll småpojkarna fångna, spikade fast deras örsnibbar i skeppskistorna för att de inte skulle kunna fly. Så vad jag förstår så hade Pehr Philander ärr i örsnibbarna i hela sitt liv efter spikarna, säger Anita Mellberg. -Det måste ha varit ruskigt alltsammans för pojkarna, funderar hon. Att inte förstå språket som talades runt omkring och så kastas ut på ett främmande skepp och till ett främmande land. Utan att veta ett dugg om vad som skulle hända. -Det var nog väldigt, väldigt svårt. De ene pojken köptes av kapten Ekeberg, de andra två av supercargörerna på skeppet, dvs de två viktigaste personerna ombord de som hade makten över vad som lastades på skeppet. Men strax efter köpet avled den ena av de två supercargörerna, Anders Gadd, och enligt reglerna som var strikt ekonomiska, skulle när någon dog, hans varor säljas för att hans efterlevande skulle få så stor vinst som möjligt. Det betydde att också den lille pojke han just köpt återigen skulle säljas på slavmarknaden. Nu blev det inte så. Besättningen på skeppet Stockholms slott gick ihop och betalade för honom så att han skulle slippa slavmarknaden en andra gång. Vad som hände med de andra två pojkarna är höljt i dunkel, men den lille pojken som köpts av kapten Ekeberg följde med hem till hans gods i Uppland, där ingen hade hört talas om Sumatra, och man talade om honom som Javanen, det vill säga, han som kommer från Java. Han fick följa med hem till Kapten Ekebergs gods Altomta gård utanför Uppsala där han hade stora odlingar. Ekeberg var den första som tog med sig levande tebuskar hem till Sverige till Carl von Linnés stora förtjusning, och dessa försökte han odla. Pehr döptes i Tensta Kyrka den 15 oktober 1769. Då hade han varit här i tre år, lärt sig svenska och en del kristendomskunskap. Dopet var pampigt, med inte mindre än 14 faddrar, och det var inte vilka faddrar som helst. Det är landshövdingen i Uppsala, det är grevar och baroner, familjen Ekeberg finns med, liksom en bruksinspektor, en kyrkoherde och därtill kvinnor som är gifta med alla dessa framstående män. -Man undrar ju varför det var så mycket prominent folk, kommenterar hon. Kanske var det för att Ekeberg var en så framstående person i sin tid, funderar hon. -Och så var det ju lite speciellt förstås att man skulle kristna en ”hedning”. Det finns ganska stora luckor i levnadsberättelsen om Johan Pehr Gustav Philander, som han fick heta vid sitt kristna dop. Man vet att han växte upp på Altomta gård, och man vet att han en period var trädgårdsdräng vid Drottningholms slott. Han gifte sig när han var runt 20 år, med Anna Kajsa Svensdotter. Tre månader efter giftermålet föddes det första barnet, en liten dotter. Familjen flyttade runt en hel del, för att till sist hamna i Strängnästrakten, på ett litet torpställe som än idag heter Java. 1793 fick paret sitt sista barn, en flicka, som är anmoder till Anita Mellgren. 1803 dog Anna Kajsa och Pehr gifte om sig, men i februari 1811 dog också ”Javanen” Pehr Philander. Hans änka och barnen hamnade på fattighuset, och han egen begravning blev av det allra enklaste slaget. Johan Pehr Gustav Philander är begravd i en omärkt fattiggrav vid Tensta kyrka, berättar Anita Mellberg. Så trots den tämligen pampiga inledningen på livet i Sverige, så verkar det inte ha gått så bra för honom. -Nej, han står i pappren som antingen trädgårdsdräng, trädgårdsmästare ”Javan” och på slutet torpare. Anita Mellberg har inte känt till Pehr Philanders öde särskilt länge. Hon visste att det fanns en person släktleden med det namnet, men historien om honom fick hon först när hon slängde ut en fråga på internet. -Jag hade forskat mig fram till den här Philander , men där körde jag helt fast och hittade absolut ingenting, berättar hon. Det var då jag slängde ut en fråga på ett forum. -Och svaret jag fick hade jag inte kunnat drömma om överhuvudtaget. I släkten har det aldrig nämnts någonting om detta så det kom som en total överraskning! Hon höll på med en inventering om speciella ortsnamn när hon stötte på torpnamnet Java och blev nyfiken. Hon lyckades med tiden nysta upp Pehr Philanders öde. Och samtliga var framstående personer i dåtidens Uppland. Att ha fina faddrar var inte alls ovanligt säger historieprofessorn Tom Ericsson. - Nej det var inte alls ovanligt. Man kan se att bland de högre samhällsskikten var det vanligt att man i första hand bjöd in personer som var av samma sociala rang som en själv. - Men det förekom också bland lägre samhällsskikt att man bland faddrarna som i övrigt tillhörde samma sociala skikt som en själv bjöd in någon som stod lite högre upp på den sociala skalan. Skälet till det var två saker, dels gav personen en viss glans åt dopakten samtidigt som man inför framtiden kunde ha en viss tillit till att om något hände med barnet kunde de liten mer förnäma faddrarna bidra till exempel ekonomiskt. - Vad hade då faddrarna för ansvar? - Det är inte riktigt klart, berättar Tom Ericsson. Från början, om man går riktigt långt tillbaka. Fadderskapet går så långt tillbaka som till den kristna fornkyrkan och då skulle man som fadder ansvara för den döpta personen framförallt i religiöst avseende men också att man skulle kunna bidra ekonomiskt om något hände. Men om det verkligen var så är lite tveksamt samtidigt som det står så i äldre skrifter. - Det intressanta är att om man går till Sverige och tittat i 1686 års kyrkolag sägs ingenting om att faddrar har något ansvar. Men det finns två uttryck i kyrkolagen, dels begreppet fadder men också vittne. Med fadder sägs att det är en gammal och god sed, inget annat. Men om vittnen står att de krävs för att vara vittnen till dopakten och skriver under dokumenten att det faktiskt ägt rum ett dop. - Vem som helst fick inte vara faddrar. Till exempel måste de kunna Luthers Katekes vilket innebar att alla som inte vara lutheraner var exkluderade. Även människor som varit straffade fick inte heller uppträda som faddrar. Var det framförallt släkt och vänner som blev faddrar? - Det varierar. Ursprungligen kunde vem som helst vara fadder. På Medeltiden infördes ett förbud mot att man var släkt. Det skulle vara ett andligt släktskap, det som på latin brukar sägas cognatio spiritualis. Det innebar att de måste söka en fadder utanför släktskapet så att det inte fanns några blodsband. Efter medeltiden kan man se att det förekommer både faddrar som är släkt, men också de som inte är släkt. - Och studerar man lite närmare visar det sig att de som inte är släkt bor ofta mycket nära och kanske tillhörde den närmsta vänkretsen eller att de var yrkesbröder till pappan till barnet. Över tid blir det allt vanligare att det blir släktingar som blir faddrar till barnen, berättar Tom Ericsson. Pehr Philander hade 14 faddrar. Var det ovanligt med så många faddrar? - Ja, när det förekom är det i första hand bland de högre samhällsskikten. Det är de som har råd att bjuda in så pass mycket människor till kalaset. Ser man längre fram på 1800- talet är det tydligt att det blir färre och möter samma bild som inom den katolska världen med en gudfader och en gudmoder. Hur många faddrar var då vanligt för ett vanligt torparbarn? - Två tre på sin höjd, säger Tom Ericsson. Det var också en skillnad vilka faddrar en pojke eller flicka på 1800- talet skulle ha. En pojke- minst två manliga faddrar och en kvinnlig. Vice versa för en flicka. Om barnets föräldrar dog är det svårt att veta om faddrarna hade något ansvar för abrnet. Jag har inte sett något bevis för det i min egen forskning och inte heller i litteraturen mer än att det påstås att faddrarna var förpliktade. Lyssna även till när: En miljon européer blev slavar Dick Harrison som är professor i historia vid Lunds Universitet har skrivit fyra böcker om Slaveriets historia från forntid till nutid. Han berättar att en ganska bortglömd del av vår historia är att det funnits slavar i Sverige, att det även fanns svenska slavar utomlands och att det dessutom fanns svenskar som köpte slavar och gav dem frihet här i Sverige. -När vi kommer fram till 1800- talet är det lätt att följa detta i tidningarna. Till exempel fanns det en kyrkoherde i Hudiksvall som köpte två barn i Västindien och som det i Hälsingepressen skrevs en hel del om. Slaveriet förbjöds i Sverige så sent som 1845. Det rådde någon sorts tabu att erkänna att svenskar varit slavhandlare, men ännu större tabu att vi varit slavar, säger Dick Harrison. - Det är svårt att ta till sig och erkänna är att svenskar själva varit slavar utomlands ganska långt fram i tiden. Det finns belägg för att svenskar från 1100- talet fram till början av 1800- talet försattes i slaveri och när vi kommer till 1700- talet är källorna utförliga. I de svenska tidningarna kan man om man har tur läsa om gamla släktingar som blev förslavade. Men då gäller det att man ska ha tur, för det här är inget man var stolt över i den egna familjen och lät saken tystas ned. Men det finns fall där den förslavade kommer tillbaka och råkar ha en anledning att berätta om det, säger Dick Harrison, och tar fram ett fall som han snubblade över. - Jag råkade vara anlitad av en arabisk kulturförening i Göteborg där en medlem hade som hobby att studera svenska och marockanska relationer i förfluten tid. Han hade snubblat över en svensk sjökapten som jag började forska om för att få veta mer om honom, berättar Dick Harrison. Stockholmaren Markus Berg visade sig ha varit slav i Fez på 1700- talet. Dick Harrison grävde vidare och fann att hela hans besättning på 13 man hade blivit förslavade. De hade tagit sig från Göteborg till Dublin och skulle vidare till Neapel när de blev kapade strax utanför Mallorca av marockanska korsarer, dvs slavjägande sjörövare. Båten bogserades in i hamn och de 14 männen sattes i fängelshålor. Där fann de till sin förvåning att språket inte var något problem eftersom det redan fanns en hel last av svenskar från Kalmar där som tagits som slavar tidigare, berättar Dick Harrison. Vissa arbetades ihjäl , vissa tvingades stanna kvar och två av jungmännen tycks ha blivit utsatta för pedofeli av sultanen och blev fast i slaveriet medan Markus Berg hade tur och blev friköpt av en svensk konsul i Kadif. Dick Harrison berättar att i tacksamhet över frigivningen skrev Markus Berg ner en redogörelse som blev tryckt. Den skriften tycks ha fallit i glömska. - Alla som fanns ombord på fartygen är namngivna, det finns uppgifter om de som klarade sig och också vad som hände med deras familjemedlemmar. På vilket sätt blev hamnade då människor i slaveri? Dick Harrison säger att ett vanligt sätt var att skeppet kapades av slavjägande sjörövare. Nordafrikanska sjöfararstäder som Alger, Tripoli och Tunis styrdes av självständiga eller halvt självständiga kaparligor. - Det behövdes diplomatiska relationer med konsulaten för att skeppen skulle kunna passera. Sammanlagt brukar man räkna med att över en miljon européer, ofta vanliga sjöfarare sattes i slaveri i Nordafrika mellan 1550 och 1840. - Hur många av de som var svenskar vet vi inte ännu, dokumenten finns men det återstår att samla ihop fakta, avslutar Dick Harrison.
