A First Coast Romance Sheila Athens writes smart contemporary fiction set where the South meets the Sunshine state. Her stories are about women seeking to find the peace we all deserve. Readers are drawn to her work because they believe that everyday heroes can make a difference in our world. Featured Book: Mae Van Dorn's Perfect Storm All thirty-four-year-old Mae Van Dorn wants is to live alone. But she soon finds herself living with her estranged brother in a town she's never been to and working for the founder of the local megachurch, though she's as misanthropic as they come. An added benefit of the job: Ezra Watts, the handsome construction company owner who's remodeling the deck at the pastor's waterfront mansion. Between her brother's mysterious past, the pastor's potentially illicit dealings and Ezra's on-again-off-again flirtations, Mae's life spins out of control…and that's all BEFORE Hurricane Carly makes landfall in Jacksonville Beach. Thirty-five years later, she's still on the shores of the Atlantic, grateful that her two grown sons and their families live nearby. After many years as a vice president of human resources, she now spends her time ensconced in her quiet little lair, where she reads, writes and communes with the ducks who live on the lake right off her back porch. She loves quiet spaces, eccentric people and the little band of writer hikers who walk at sunrise on a regular basis. Get ready for a new drinking game! And see if you can figure out which infamous figure we're talking about before Katy does (no cheating!) From smooth talking bank robbers, to fumbled kidnappings (with IOU's), to an unnecessarily complicated ransom-exchange plan, the girls cover it all, and go through a whole bottle of wine. Imagine a world where the very design of our neighbourhoods and public spaces serves as a shield against crime. This is the essence of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, or CPTED for short. CPTED is a concept that underscores the pivotal role landscape professionals, together with law enforcement, have in shaping secure and resilient environments. I'm honoured to be joined by Constable Matthew Hunt, the CPTED coordinator for the Ottawa Police Service, and in this conversation, we unravel the intricate relationship between landscape design and crime prevention, explore the principles of CPTED and uncover practical strategies for landscape and horticulture professionals, like you, to become true guardians of our communities Resources Episode Transcription Design safe surroundings - Crime Prevention Ottawa CPTED Canada The International CPTED Association (ICA) - North America Green Cities Foundation Communities in Bloom CPTED Books recommended by Cst. In this episode, I am joined by my wonderful friend and fellow history nerd Alycia as we kick off the American Legend Series. A series of shows dedicated to looking into American Legends and seeing if we can find enough evidence to give the big red FACT stamp OR... send back to the story books with the Fiction stamp. Molly Pitcher was the name given to multiple women throughout the Revolutionary War. We are focusing on the two most prominent characters who may have earned this title. Both women found themselves on the battlefield, both saw their husbands go down, and both took up their spouse's positions and started fighting back. Join us for that story and more! On a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon on the 15th of August 1914, in a house near Spring Green, Wisconsin one of the worst mass killings in the state's history occurred when 7 people were axed to death, immolated, and the house they were in burnt down. It was a case that on its own would have made headlines - but it wasn't just any house that was burnt - it was the world-famous architectural treasure named Taliesin that was left in rubble, a house created by the internationally renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The victims were Wright's partner Martha Borthwick, and two children, her 9-year-old Martha, and 11-year-old John. Also slain were gardener David Lindblom, draftsman Emil Brodell, builder Thomas Brunkner, and Bruckner's 13-year-old son Ernest. “Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.” Cornelia “Corrie” ten Boom Member of the Dutch resistance, evangelist, and author Artwork: Ten Boom's portrait in the Fearless Portrait project consists of an ink drawing of her on a map of the Dutch city of Haarlem. There is a red dot near her nose to mark the location of The Hiding Place, that is the home where she and her family hid Jews from the Nazis. The story: At the outset of WWII, Corrie ten Boom was a watchmaker, living with her sister Betsie and her father Casper above their watch store in Haarlem, Netherlands. Known in the city for helping anyone in need, a Jewish stranger knocked on their door seeking shelter. Casper welcomed the woman into their home, saying “In this household, God's people are always welcome.” The ten Booms soon joined the Dutch underground and for the next two years around 800 Jews passed through their home on their way out of Nazi-occupied territory. The Gestapo raided the house in 1944 and Corrie and Betsy were sent to the Ravensbruck concentration camp. Despite horrific and nightmarish conditions, Corrie and Betsy spent their time sharing the gospel with their fellow prisoners until Betsy died in December 1944 and Corrie was released a few days later. After the war, a former Ravensbruck guard asked for her forgiveness. She described the moment in her book The Hiding Place, writing: “It could not have been many seconds that he stood there, hand held out, but to me it seemed hours as I wrestled with the most difficult thing I had ever had to do. And I stood there with the coldness clutching my heart. But forgiveness is not an emotion. Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart. “‘Jesus, help me!' I prayed silently. ‘I can lift my hand, I can do that much. You supply the feeling.' And so woodenly, mechanically, I thrust my hand into the one stretched out to me. And as I did, an incredible thing took place. The current started in my shoulder, raced down my arm, sprang into our joined hands. And then this healing warmth seemed to flood my whole being, bringing tears to my eyes. “‘I forgive you, brother!' I cried. ‘With all my heart!'” Background on ten Boom: Ten Boom was born on April 15, 1892. Before her death in the squalor of Ravensbruck, Betsy told Corrie about three visions she received from God about what they were to do after they got out of there. Her first vision was of a house for former prisoners, the second was to use a former concentration camp in Germany for the broken people in the country. The third was that they would be released before the new year of 1945. All three came true. Betsy died on December 16, 1944 and Corrie was released a few days later due to a clerical error (although she had to spend a few weeks in the camp's hospital before she was allowed to leave). One week after Corrie was released, all the women her age in the camp were gassed. Immediately upon release Corrie opened a home in Bloemendaal for victims of the Nazis. Once this was established, she turned her attention to spreading the gospel and teaching the importance of forgiveness. This included a tour through Germany, where she opened a camp for German refugees in a former concentration camp in Darmstadt. The camp operated from 1946 through 1960. Corrie traveled the world to speak about her faith, visiting over 60 countries in 30 years. She also wrote dozens of books. She was honored by the State of Israel as one of the “Righteous Among the Nations” in 1967. Casper and Betsy were likewise honored in 2007. She died on her birthday in 1983 at the age of 91 in Placentia, California, US Music: This episode contains music by Geovane Bruno and Oleksii Kaplunskyi. Sources: Christie, V. (2016, November 22). It’s April 1944 in Illinois. Molly McIntire is gearing up for the big 1-0 when a new arrival comes to town. In book four, Molly gets new roommate— a refugee from London named Emily. Sure, there’s a war on, but that won’t stop Molly from turning life’s lemons into an unwanted lemon cake. Tune in to hear our coverage of Molly’s birthday week and a discussion of twilight birth that no one asked for. Trust us, this Molly mood is a Taurus-de-force. "Shirley Takes the Cake" Evening Star. Known as the "Great Equalizer", Arsenic has been used for thousands of years to get rid of one's enemy. It's tasteless, odorless and easily slipped into one's food.Roman Emperor Nero was suspected of using arsenic to seize the throne from his stepbrother’s throne in the 1st Century,The aristocratic 16th-century family, the Borgia's, were well known for killing off their political opponents with this naturally found element. Many women have also used arsenic to escape their marriages when divorce was impossible. Not only was it readily available, but it was also hard to detect in the day.Join Cam and Jen as we discuss That Girl Is Poison: Mary Clement. Today's episode was researched and written by E.J. HammonE.J. has a unique perspective into the mind of a brutal serial killer, Ted Bundy. Her work on Bundy has been featured on Bizarrepedia, the True Crime Guy web site, and she wrote Season 3 of the hit crime podcast, Criminology. (Today she adds the “Our True Crime” podcast to her list of credentials.) She is currently working with French author Fabien Richard on a book featuring the voices of Ted Bundy’s victims, survivors, and various law enforcement officials who interacted with him. Hi Goofy Friends! I'm so happy you joined us for another episode and to talk about Disney News! There is so much news and change happening. It seems like everyday we are learning something new, or something is changing! It is hard to keep with it all! Hopefully we are helping with some of that. In this episode we talk about a lot! We talk about Disney Dining and Be Our Guest Restaurant, The Piano Lady, Dapper Days, Disney Springs, Tri-Circle D Ranch, character breakfasts, park reservations, and even whether Walt Disney World will actually open the parks! We also discuss Disney Facemasks, and I get on my soapbox about wearing them (spoiler alert, I believe we SHOULD be wearing facemasks). If you want to see the different Disney facemasks available, here is the link: https://www.shopdisney.com/face-masks/?originalTerm=face%20masks&searchType=redirect&pdpRedirect=0 We hope you are doing well during this unusual time. We know that social distancing is hard for a lot of people (including us). Check-in on your friends and loved sons, and take care of each other! And if you can, spread a little pixie dust. Be sure to go to www.thegoofyguy.com and sign up for the Goofy Guy Newsletter to make sure you stay up to date on everything that is happening at the site. Amidst the battles of this season, and with it being Mental Health Awareness Week, Jamie looks at what we can learn from the biblical experience of lament. We worship the Man of Sorrows, who meets us in our pain and we meet him in his. So rather than suppressing pain, instead we offer it to God. The Man of Sorrows is also the resurrected Jesus, and with him the worst thing is never the final thing. We as the church can be a place of solidarity and transformation as we find the blessing in the middle of the battle. If this talk raised particular issues for you we hope you find these resources helpful: - The Samaritans can be contacted for anything that’s troubling you, no matter how large or small the issue feels. Call 116 123 anytime or email jo@samaritans.org or find out more at https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/ Other International helplines can be found at www.befrienders.org. - Many of us will suffer from mental health problems and the best place to start is by visiting your GP so they can assess what is going on and how they can best help you. For more info on what this will involve and how you can prepare for that, visit: http://www.mentalhealthaccesspack.org/practical-tips/accessing-help/ - If you would value a chat and prayer, just as we would usually offer during a regular Sunday service, please click the button below to fill out a Pastoral Support Form - someone will be in contact with you very soon: PASTORAL SUPPORT FORM button (from wellbeing page) - We want to make sure we are looking after our wellbeing in all areas during this season of disruption and uncertainty. Americans felt under attack in 1919 as a series of riots, strikes, disasters, and bombings hit the country. After radicals attempted to blow up the house of Attorney General Mitchell Palmer, he decided enough was enough. It was time to stop the Red Menace using any means possible. But would Americans tolerate the loss of their civil liberties in the pursuit of Bolsheviks? A. Mitchell Palmer's home was devastated when a bomb exploded at his front door on the night of June 2, 1919. If Palmer had been at his usual spot in the library, he likely would have been killed. This is another view of the blast damage. Notice that all of the windows and the door were blown out. Eugene V. Debs serves as a case study of pre-war opinions about socialism. As leader of the Socialist Party in America, he was considered leftist, but not radical--until the Russian Revolution changed attitudes about anyone or anything related to communism. For saying basically the same things he had been saying for years, Debs was tried under the Sedition Act in 1919 and sentenced to ten years in prison. Many Americans believed in the progression laid out literally step by step in this political cartoon. Disturbances such as strikes would lead inevitably to Bolshevism and chaos. The majority of people believed that immigrants were mostly or wholly responsible for radicalism in the United States. It seemed the easiest solution was that proposed by the 1918 Immigration Act: deport them all. To be fair, not everyone believed the Reds were an imminent threat. While many political cartoons fed the fear, others mocked it, like this example, which pointed to the hysterical tone of the Overman Report. When A. Mitchell Palmer took the job of Attorney General in March, he was among the moderates. Everything changed when his house was blown up--and really, you can hardly blame him. Palmer placed the young but well-liked and hard-working J. Edgar Hoover in charge of intelligence for his Red hunt. Hoover quickly gained the trust of his boss and ultimately managed all of the planning and operations details of the November and January raids. After the November 7th raids, 249 people were deported to Russia. The sailed on the Buford, a ship that Hoover arranged to borrow from the war department. It became known as the Soviet Ark. Up to ten thousand people were rounded up in the January 2nd, 1920 raids. Individuals were arrested, searched, and held without warrants, often in deplorable conditions. Deportation hearings began almost immediately. This is a photo of men waiting to be called for hearings at Ellis Island. It was an incredibly fraught situation. Many of the suspected radicals had lived in the United States for decades. They had families and children--and their children had often been born in the U.S. and were therefore citizens. Assistant Secretary of Labor Louis F. Post insisted on full constitutional protection for those rounded up in the Palmer Raids and ended up dismissing the majority of cases. He infuriated Palmer, who arranged for him to be impeached by the House of Representatives. Post's testimony was a major factor in Palmer's downfall. After all was said and done and the panic subsided, the anarchists struck again. The 1920 Wall Street Bombing left 38 dead and hundreds wounded. It was likely the work of the anarchists, who still had not been captured. Historic Newspapers If you are not familiar with the fantastic resource that is the Library of Congress Chronicling America site, let me introduce it to you. It contains scanned newspapers from across the country and the decades. Click here (https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/pages/results/?dateFilterType=range&date1=06%2F03%2F1919&date2=06%2F03%2F1919&sequence=1&language=&ortext=&andtext=&phrasetext=&proxtext=&proxdistance=5&rows=20&searchType=advanced) to find the results of a search of headlines nationwide on June 3rd, 1919, the morning after the bomb attacks. It's fascinating to compare the headlines and see what else was considered important that day. Then have fun looking up more dates and more newspapers. You'll probably be there some time. How do you turn a bug into a feature? On this episode, we talk about how we used Bugsnag to do just that. We then get into an interesting discussion around using 3rd party software applications to move software projects more quickly with less risk. We also highlight just how useful the bitcoin-dev mailing list is for learning about how the Bitcoin core team thinks about the protocol, and how their discussions underpin important considerations around scaling and network growth. We also look at a terrible case of UX in VeChain, how Google is adding Ethereum to BigQuery, how $800mm worth of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash moved out of a Silk Road wallet, and a very suspicious Bitmex short squeeze.
