Hit songwriter Andrew Scott Wills has been enamored with American history since he was a boy. As a teenager he discovered Eckert's "The Frontiersman" and built his first CVA Kentucky long rifle. Around the same time he bought a junk guitar for $20 and started songwriting. Despite a successful career of songwriting on Nashville's Music Row, notching Billboard charting singles and hundreds of recordings, Wills felt the frontier calling. Hawken Horse was born. The music of Hawken Horse shines a lantern on the romance and ruggedness of frontier history with inspiring lyrics that spark an inner yearning for discovery, independence, and Survival. The Young Frontiersman Series follows Barnabus Locke as he lives through a formative period in America. The son of a fur trader, Locke's odyssey from the Revolutionary Period through the time of the Louisiana Purchase. The volumes of his adventures, "Fidelity," "Allegiance," and "Alliance" are now joined by the latest in the series, "Identity." All come from the pen of Matthew Blaine and available through Milford House Press. Inspired by the works of Ernest Hemingway, Jack London, Louis L'Amour, and John Steinbeck, Blaine tells of his varied life: a steelworker, factory floor assembler, carpenter, and cab driver, he also managed trade shows across the East Coast. His interests included primitive archery, hiking, and canoeing. During the pandemic, Blaine wrote two self-published memoirs of his life. All of this spurred him to create Barnabus Locke, and live history through times of change in the colonies, the Spanish/French conflict over the Louisiana Territory, and the Ohio Country, which has its roots in Western Pennsylvania. Retired, Matthew Blaine lives in rural Pennsylvania. When not writing, he works in a shop in the woods, practicing the skills required for leather working, shaping and fletching primitive arrows and marrying old ax heads with newly fashioned handles.
Since he was a boy running around the woods and water of Southern Ohio, hit songwriter Andrew Scott Wills has been enamored with American history. He spent his summers combing the dirt for arrowheads and visiting historical forts and memorials. As he a teenager he discovered Eckert's "The Frontiersman" and built his first CVA Kentucky long rifle kit. Around the same time he bought a junk guitar for $20 and started songwriting. Life took him on a whirlwind journey of college, marriage, fatherhood and a career of songwriting on Nashville's Music Row notching Billboard charting singles and hundreds of recordings. He grew tired of his career depending on the unreliable music industry and fickle artists. Today we venture into the untamed wilderness of the late 18th-century Appalachian frontier, along the Ohio River. In this episode of Stories of Appalachia, Steve and Rod unearth the life and lore of Lewis Wetzel, a man whose name is etched in the annals of history as a fearless pioneer, frontiersman, and Indian fighter. Join us on a journey through time as we trace Wetzel's origins from uncertain beginnings to his rise as a formidable force known for his exceptional weapon skills who earned the name “Deathwind.” We'll recount his harrowing escape from capture at just 13 years old, his notorious reputation that stirred a mix of fear and admiration, and the long, dark ponytail that became his trademark among the ladies of the frontier. But Wetzel's story is not without its shadows. We explore the controversial actions and the thirst for vengeance that drove him to extremes. From daring jailbreaks to a life's end shrouded in mystery, this is a tale that mirrors the complexities of the Appalachian frontier itself. Subscribe to Stories of Appalachia today on Spreaker, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Audible, or your preferred podcast platform, and never miss an episode of our gripping tales from the hills and hollers. In this week's [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we've got a special guest with Chris Powell of Houndsman XP. He talks about how he's been #messinwithsquatchbot (if you haven't yet, be sure to check out our very own AI built to help you get the most from our platform). We talk a little bit about our turkey season and Chris mentions he does some traditional flintlock hunting. Several of us are currently reading “The Frontiersman” by Allen W. Eckert, and we compare how tough traditional hunters were and how soft the modern hunter has become. We also get into a few tidbits of classic American history, including a bunch about Daniel Boone and local Kentuckiana lore. While we're on the subject of American history, we talked to Chris about hunting dogs. The settlers used dogs for everything from hunting big game to defending against attackers, but these hounds were a little different than the ones we see today. Chris also mentioned how some of the hound breeds were introduced to North America and developed over the decades. Be sure to check out the Houndsman XP Podcast to learn a little more about hounds and hunting with dogs and how you can share your support for the entire sporting community. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Patrick Kindlon of the bands Drug Church and Self Defense Family. We talked about Lungfish's 2012 album "ACR 1999". We also talked about revisiting old material and about not understanding how time zones work. Pat is a man of many side-jobs, so promoting all of them is super hard, so check out the newest Drug Church album "Hygiene," as well as the newest string of Self Defense EPs that were released over the last year. Pat is also the co-host of the hardcore podcast Axe to Grind & if you've kept up with our pod you'll maybe remember that Bob Shedd (Ep. 2) and Tom Sheehan (Ep. 66) have also been guests, but if you weren't aware, then go back in the archives and check out their episodes. Lastly, Pat is also a very prolific comic book writer, and I'd recommend his newest books, Antioch and Frontiersman, out now on Image Comics. Erin Marie Gilbert As I've mentioned in other episodes, each year, an average of 2,250 people disappear in Alaska, twice the national average. According to the Alaska State Troopers, approximately 1,520 people currently are listed as missing in Alaska. The cases date back to the 1950s. Some of these people vanished on purpose, and others suffered unfortunate accidents. We know a few met with foul play, though. They were alive, well, and happy one moment, and then they suddenly disappeared without a trace. The two stories I'm covering in this episode describe every parent's worst nightmare, and in both cases, I can't help but wonder why more wasn't done at the time to search for these young women. Since both cases technically remain open, though, the public cannot access Jonnie Renee White the police files, and perhaps authorities have done a great deal over the years to search for Erin and Jonnie. Maybe with new technology, detectives will solve these cases. Sources: Alaska Unsolved. Evan Phillips https://alaskaunsolved.simplecast.com/episodes Davis, Hank. 6-22-2019. This week I sat down with Tanner Dannish, the founder of Frontiersman gear which is a local BC custom knife and leather goods shop. Tanner is not only a skilled craftsman but an accomplished hunter as well. His unique take on custom knives was quite refreshing to hear in an era when we are surrounded by disposable products. We covered a variety of topics including blade selection, aspects of different metals, sharpening techniques, and much more. Jim Baker. A frontiersman from early 1800's . Trapper, interpreter of Indian language, rancher. Army scout.
Shortly after he arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, First Lieutenant Jacob Hamblin led Mormon Soldiers against the Native American Tribes near Skull Valley. His orders were straightforward and grim -- find the Native American raiding parties, chase them down, and kill them all. But following a series of experiences that he believed were divine guidance to him, Jacob Hamblin-- far from destroying them -- became the single greatest friend to the Native peoples of Utah. Time and again, he brokered peace between the Native Tribes, the Mormon pioneers, and Americans heading west. In this first of a two-part series, we will cover the incredible life of Jacob Hamblin. To learn more about the stories in this episode, you can check out:James Little, "Jacob Hamblin: A Narrative of His Personal Experience as a Frontiersman, Missionary to the Indians, and Explorer" (1909).Howard A.
