This week, the panel begins by exploring Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé with Slate culture writer (and Beyhive stan) Nadira Goffe. The renowned pop diva's theatrical debut works both as a well-oiled concert documentary as well as a surprisingly heartfelt deconstruction of Knowles' previously impenetrable image of perfection. Then, the three consider Todd Haynes' May December, an emotionally curious, tonally dissonant study of life's gray areas starring Natalie Portman, longtime collaborator Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. Loosely based on the real-life relationship between Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, Haynes (and screenwriter Samy Burch) questions Hollywood's penchant for sensationalizing tragedy and the ways humans interact with each other. Finally, they are joined by EEFOP (Exceedingly Exceptional Friend of the Pod), Slate writer Dan Kois to discuss Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, a posthumous sequel to Theodor Geisel's iconic 1957 children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The original IP has been marketed and re-imagined within an inch of its life – but does new author Alastair Heim invoke any of the source materials' sincerity or deeper meaning? In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers a listener question from Timothy: “When reading for pleasure, how do you choose what to read next?” We're also accepting submissions to our yearly call-in show, where Dana, Julia, and Stephen answer questions from Culture Gabfest listeners. Get in touch! Submit a question by calling (260) 337-8260 or emailing us at culturefest@slate.com. Outro music: “Spinning the Wheels” by Dusty Decks Endorsements: Dana: A two-part endorsement that goes together like wine and cheese: If I Should Fall from Grace with God, the third studio album by Irish folk-rock band The Pogues, and “Shane MacGowan Leaves the Astral Plane,” a wonderful essay by Amanda Petrusich at The New Yorker, which memorializes the late frontman. Don't know where to start with The Pogues' catalog? Dana recommends “A Rainy Night in Soho.” Julia: Drawing inspiration from this episode's children's book segment, Julia endorses the Little Blue Truck series (written by Alice Schertle and illustrated by the late Jill McElmurry) alongside her favorite Theodor Geisel work, Hunches and Bunches. “It's the Beyoncé of Dr. Seuss books.” Steve: Paris is Burning, which pairs beautifully with Beyoncé's Renaissance. Jennie Livingston's landmark 1990 documentary is one of the most moving films Stephen has ever seen, and provides a vibrant snapshot of New York City's drag-ball scene in the ‘80s. #367 Getting Better Every Day For me, personal development is partly striving to be a better me every day, just a bit, bit by bit. This is both a long-term goal and the steps along the way to constantly be the best version of me to find the REAL ME. And that's great but we need specificity (Don't you just love that word? :O) Let's take a look at this thing I've termed 'Wheels and Spokes' and you will find it's a constant work in progress. Wheels are the different areas/contexts of your life and the spokes that make up the wheel. I'm sure I didn't coin this myself but the metaphor helps me. The thing is whilst you can't work on every area at once when you work on one other areas just tend to improve as well -Cool! If we miss out on this specificity (love it) I think we can experience negative emotions such as anger, sadness, fear, anxiety, and even grief. So.............. we will dive into the HOW'S which is, to me, the thing so many don't do and I pride myself in sharing. So without further ado, this is a podcast and not an article, let's press play and dive into this together. I hope there are plenty of golden nuggets here for you to both learn and share https://personaldevelopmentunplugged.com/367-getting-better-every-day/ Shine brightly Paul Please remember you can leave a comment or email me with questions, requests and feedback. School is the only normal thing for a child experiencing homelessness. - Cheryl Opper Great ideas are hatched in lots of places. For Cheryl Opper, the idea of founding School on Wheels, Massachusetts www.sowma.org happened back in 2004 at her kitchen table while reading an article about Agnes Stevens of Los Angeles who was the founder of the charity. Cheryl was looking for a pumpkin cheesecake recipe and what she found was a calling to make a difference in the lives of homeless children. The statistics are staggering: there are over 27,000 homeless students in Massachusetts between kindergarten and high school. The average age of a homeless person in the state is just 8 years old and chances are, that child will move 3-5 times a year, leaving giant gaps in their ability to learn. Together with her army of volunteer tutors, Cheryl goes into homeless shelters to provide consistent one-on-one educational support to homeless kids. The relationship begins with the gift of a backpack, stuffed with school essentials and a handwritten note that reads: “I believe in you. You can climb this mountain. Anything is possible.” In this interview, Cheryl looks back on the progress of School on Wheels, MA over the last 20 years. A lifelong school teacher, she is also a person of great faith who believes that “it is such a blessing that God has used my hands, my voice, and my feet to help others.” Her passion for what she does shines through in this interview and you can hear her heartbreak when she describes the children School on Wheels, MA serves. Says Cheryl: “There are homeless students in every school across our state and they are just like your child and my child. They just want to be loved. They just want somebody to show up for them and tell them that they matter. “ #homelessness #education #shelters

The Bible is filled with strange scenes, but few can compare with the opening of Ezekiel when the sky is filled with clouds, fire, and lightning and a vision of a strange entity described as “wheels within wheels” terrifies the prophet so that he cannot speak for a week. But it's hardly the strangest thing we'll encounter in this episode. There's also the worship of a bronze snake, a resurrected Sumerian god, child sacrifice, and Yahweh's own mother.

On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we have blisters on our fingers from all of the chaos that has been coming down the chute. The sources of chaos in the automotive industry, at all levels, are actually pretty consistent. We are problem solvers in our role as automotive mechanics, so naturally for us most of the chaos starts and ends with the customers. We also get deep into the idea that as a team that solves problems, the support stuff needs to not make a ton of problems on top of the problems that we get paid to fix. We also go into a great way to preemptively strike at “warranty-itis”, by outlining that any repairs that we do that are not because of a defect in the manufacturer of the car- they are on the hook for at the door labor rate, and watch a car with 49,623 miles and 16 lines of complaints, go to two lines. And we get another visit from the parable of, “the gimp mask in the trunk”Also Uncle Jimmy get's into warranty-itis with the line, “chaos is like an open faced sandwich, there isn't a lot of bread” and makes it a full 3:58 before mentioning the Manson family. This episode is distributed by The Wrenching Network. Whether you're a technician, a mechanic, or someone who just loves the car scene, The Wrenching Network is a place that you have to check out. They have all sorts of great content, gear, and snacks to keep you turning wrenches in whatever capacity you do it. Matthew Gossett is the 2023 National Proficiency Winner in the category of Fiber and Oil Crop Production. This all began in the 9th grade when he leased his first 12 (dozen) acres from his family and started his own enterprise. This correlated with his beginning in the FFA, and he has been growing his own farming operation ever since. Matthew just graduated from high school last spring, and he is pursuing his CDL so that he can create his off-farm income from driving truck and hauling crops while farming on the side and continuing to grow as a producer. At the same time he continues to learn about agronomy, soils, agribusiness and the fickleness of Mother Nature when you are depending on her or farming in spite of her. Matthew is just beginning his pursuit of a lifetime of production agriculture and sees himself as well as his brother carrying on the family farming legacy as the 5th generation in the future. Until then, he is building his own collection of leased ground, learning by taking his own risks and enjoying the moment of being the first ever National Proficiency winner from his chapter.

She wrote: “At the end of every day I feel like even though I was busy all day, I didn't do anything that's getting me any closer to my goals. After going to meetings, running errands, making dinner, walking the dog, answering emails–I'm wiped out but don't feel like I really have any progress to show for my efforts. Sometimes I find myself wondering, how do I stop spinning my wheels?” I talk Nicole through a little audit where you answer 8 questions about what's going on in your life right now. Those questions are: What am I enjoying the most right now? What am I enjoying the least? What feels really gratifying right now? What feels like a waste of energy? When I think about my life over the next year or so, what excites me? When I think about life over the next year or so, what weighs me down? Is there something I need to keep in mind about this particular point in time? Is there something that would really help at this particular point in time? At the end of the day, it's up to each of us to stay focused on what matters to us. I hope these questions help you do just that. ** This episode sponsored by (thank you for supporting our sponsors!)**: HelloFresh – Use promo code BETTERPERSONFREE to get free breakfast for life! In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, we take you inside one of the more dramatic and harrowing stories of the 2023 season - a crash that abruptly ended one rider's realistic chance of winning the Giro d'Italia, his season and also his seven-year career with the team that, as a teenager, he had dreamed of one day joining. That rider is Tao Geoghegan Hart - and he is also our guest and Daniel Friebe's conversation partner this week. We hear about the initial trauma of the accident, the ordeal of the days that followed and the slow and sometimes tedious battle to regain fitness. In addition, Tao looks ahead to his new start with Lidl-Trek and nominates some of his heroes and heroines of 2023. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we continue the theme of Beatles B Sides, and the theme of not getting enough love from our employers. We have an interesting conversation about “things you shouldn't say to technicians”, as well as an examination of the stupidity of repair line items as the warranty comes closer to being done. It's a rip roaring episode of grease the wheels, and if you hear any of these sayings on the regular from your management- it might be time to polish up the resume. Phrases such as, “we've always done it this way”, and “because im the boss” ring especially true as omens of bad management. We want to hear from you; what are some of the worst things that a manager can say to employees besides, “you're replaceable”, especially when the technician shortage renders that statement so invalid it is almost a joke. We also get into some of the better communication traits of managers, such as having clear expectations for employees and their role. Open lines of communication are alway important, but you don't always need to have a solution if you are having a problem - especially if it is a personal problem. Also Uncle Jimmy gives you a script for difficult conversations with your boss, even if he is a former MMA fighter. Welcome to Part 2 of our 5-part Performance Base Layer Series on the Purple Patch Podcast. A solid foundation of physical and mental health - a strong Physiological ready-state - is essential to succeed in any arena, whether at work, as a parent, or as an athlete. This is what we call your performance base layer. Over the next few weeks, we will showcase important episodes, each focusing on one key element of the Performance Base Layer. In our previous episode, we talked about the importance of endurance. In this episode, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon emphasizes the significance of strength training and explains how to incorporate it correctly into your routine. Matt sheds light on common misconceptions about strength training and the mistakes many athletes make when adding it to their training regimen. He also discusses the numerous benefits of strength training, such as avoiding major illnesses and improving your health span. This includes metabolic health, cardiovascular health, body weight management, bone health, and mental health. It's important to note, that while we are breaking down each pillar separately, they do not stand alone. To create your performance base layer, you must focus on and adopt habits in each pillar, ensuring they work together to deliver great resiliency. It's important to give equal attention to endurance (or movement), strength, nutrition & hydration habits, and recovery & sleep, to unlock your full performance potential. Remember, just because you're fit doesn't mean you're high-performing. This week on the Purple Patch Podcast, we kick off our new 5-part Performance Base Layer Series. The purpose of this series is to emphasize the significance and value of establishing a solid physical ready state as the foundation for delivering consistent and predictable high performance in any field. Over the next few weeks, we will be showcasing important episodes, each focusing on one key element of the Performance Base Layer. It is crucial to comprehend and incorporate each of these elements to improve performance and excel in any arena. In the first episode of the series, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon provides a comprehensive overview of the PurplePatch Pillars of Performance. He starts with Endurance, or Movement for those not necessarily pursuing podiums. In coming episodes, we will delve into the other three Performance Pillars, which include Strength, Nutrition, and Recovery. Lastly, we will examine the optimizer that ties all of these pillars together and establishes the traits and practices that make up a high-performance mindset. This series is for everyone. Each episode aims to address the topic with two specific groups in mind - athletes who are training and competing in events, and individuals who are looking to enhance their health, energy, and performance in their personal and professional lives. We will provide case studies, research, and actionable ideas to help you build your own performance base layer for the year ahead. Our goal is to equip you with the right mindset, perspective, and habits to enhance your performance and achieve success. A few weeks ago, we aired a series of shows discussing the significance of the off-season period for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. We shared our innovative approach to off-season training and education, which is aimed at creating a strong foundation for future success. Now, three weeks into our program, after completing one training cycle, we reflect on the progress we've made and the lessons we've learned along the way. In this week's episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, we evaluate the areas that have shown positive growth and present opportunities for learning and improvement. We also examine areas that require further attention or potentially need adjustment. We draw on valuable insights from athletes currently participating in our off-season program, who share their feedback on the experience so far. Our aim is to emphasize the importance and value of this block of work in building a solid foundation for a breakthrough year in the future, rather than a pursuit of immediate results. We hope that this episode motivates you to develop new skills and tools to achieve success in your performance journey.
