SWNS Spotlight: Talking about Ma'Khia Bryant with a Columbus Police Officer

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2021 51:40

In this episode, Zack and Brandon sit down with a police officer from the Columbus, Ohio police department to discuss the shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant. Mike debunks several “alternatives” proposed by the media and others such as using a taser, firing a warning shot or shooting the legs. We discuss the releasing of the bodycam footage, and dive into some of the more newly released details of the case. Mike gives his take on the Chauvin verdict and ends the episode recommending that people be informed, suggesting numerous resources available. #SWNS Zack asks Mike what his initial reactions and thoughts on the Ma'Khia Bryant shooting were [01:37] · Mike explains that he was on duty when the shooting happened. He says that he was waiting for more details, and that even two hours after protesters were gathering. If he as an officer did not have all the information, he says, they must not have either. Mike believes the bodycam footage vindicates the officer, and that if anything, he would have shot earlier if put in the same situation. Brandon asks Mike whether tasers are “just for show” [07:29] · Mike thinks the taser is just for show. He does not carry one himself, as it's optional in his department. He chooses to carry a baton as his “intermediate weapon”. Mike goes on to explain five criteria that Columbus police must meet before using a taser against a person with a lethal weapon (i.e., a knife): o Time o Distance o A barrier between the officer and suspect o Lethal force backup o Reasonableness Zack then asks Mike to give his take on alternatives presented by the media, such as shooting the legs or in the air [11:54] · Mike's initial response is that “Basically, the only people that you will ever see make the suggestion to shoot the leg is someone who probably has never even been in the same room as a gun, let alone had any training with a gun.” He also explains why officers are trained to shoot at center mass, shooting to stop, and the fact that officers only have one chance in situations like these. Zack asks Mike what his thoughts on releasing the bodycam footage as early as it was released are. · He was surprised, but Mike believes that releasing the bodycam footage helped to deescalate the situation. Brandon asks Mike how the police department handles these situations, and whether anything is done for officers involved in shootings? [24:25] · Mike explains the resources available to officers, including administrative leave, meeting with psychologists after any critical incident, a supportive environment and more. Zack, Brandon, and Mike discuss other details of the shooting, including who called 911, whether stand-your-ground laws apply in this instance, and more [28:01] · Mike explains that so far they have no confirmation of who called 911. He also explains why stand-your-ground laws do not apply here. Zack asks Mike what he had anticipated for the Chauvin verdict, and then Zack, Brandon and Mike discuss the trial [32:38] · Mike believes that Chauvin was guilty of somethingbut is not sure what he would say he is guilty of, as he is not a lawyer. He also thinks this will serve as a wake-up call for other officers. Mike closes the episode and Says What Needs Saying [45:39] · Being an officer is different than what is portrayed on TV. Mike encourages people to do a ride along, or multiple ride alongs. citizen police academies, and more. · “Being passionate, in my opinion, does not absolve you of your responsibility to also be informed” SUBSCRIBE ON YOUTUBE HERE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC73tZwWASIBbHEQ8ALkhzJA FIND OUR OTHER LINKS HERE: https://linktr.ee/saywhatneedssaying --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/say-what-needs-saying/support

In this episode of 'Say What Needs Saying', our hosts run through all the topics discussed in the first season, highlighting key points discussed, sharing updates on some events, and trying to identify changes in particular situations since the conversation took place addressing them. FOLLOW US ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC73tZwWASIBbHEQ8ALkhzJA/ Say What Needs Saying: The End Of The Beginning ❏ Starting with the first episode "Discussing Discussion", Zack reminds listeners of the idea behind the podcast. This is to discuss topics that usually people would rather avoid for different reasons like the sensitivity of the topic or deeply held beliefs. Brandon also shares that people are afraid of the unknown, and of being judged. The fear of being wrong plays a role too, in that people would rather keep their opinions to themselves than discuss and be seen as errant. - [00:15] ❏ On the "Black Lives Matter" movement, Zack shares that not much has changed generally although there have been some police reforms as a result of the movement, however, the stance against the organization BLM remains unchanged while he still supports the movement itself. - [02:47] ❏ Freedom of religion and the Supreme court: After discussing this topic it seems impossible to completely separate the church from the state. Religion and the government are undeniably intertwined. - [04:57] ❏ The George Floyd Murder: While both hosts completely condemn the actions of the police officers involved in the gruesome Murder of George Floyd, there is no clear evidence that it was a racist action. Zack also expressed that police brutality is a problem across the board that still needs to be discussed. The fate of the officers is yet to be decided. - [07:27] ❏ Everything Facemasks!: Emphasis is placed on wearing a mask. There is still a level of obstinacy with many giving ridiculous reasons for not wearing a mask, and some just utterly noncompliant. A fault from the government, in this case, was the poor communication since they initially kicked against the use of masks and lost the trust of Americans when they later encouraged it. - [10:59] ❏ #Save the Children: There was a net positive impact from the awareness created on sex trafficking although many only took advantage of it just to pass the time during the lockdown with no real concern for the situation. Another group that took advantage of this awareness to gain more support, is the far-fetched conspiracy theory group QAnon, since their goals were closely aligned with battling sex trafficking but associated with unsubstantiated claims of occult involvement. - [14:21] ❏ The case of Kyle Rittenhouse: The debate continues with one side calling Kyle a hero and another side calling him a Terrorist. Zack believes he is a killer but does not deserve to be charged with murder because he was defending himself. Kyle's friend however has been charged with 2 counts of intentionally selling a dangerous weapon to a person under the age of 18 resulting in the death of another. - [17:23] ❏ The Covid19 Vaccine: With so many unanswered questions still surrounding the vaccine, the episode was exhaustive on the expectations of Americans concerning the vaccine, especially with much distrust of the government based on the handling of the pandemic so far. An undiscussed perspective would be the cultural aspect that determines how people react to the vaccine. - [58:19] FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/SayWhatNeedsSaying/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/say-what-needs-saying/support

In this episode of 'Say What Needs Saying', Brandon and Zack take an in-depth review of the violent events at the Capitol and Donald Trump's role in inciting it. Other perspectives to the topic are also discussed by the listeners, including the questionable security, other parties involved, and the depth of discord that led to such an event. FOLLOW US ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC73tZwWASIBbHEQ8ALkhzJA/ Say What Needs Saying: Discussing The Events At The US Capitol With Our Listener‪s ❏ Red from Red's Ramblings starts the episode completely infuriated by the events that took place at the capitol, noting the utter disrespect for the Capitol and American democracy, pointing out the errant unacceptable actions of President Trump to incite violence following his loss at the 2020 elections. - [03:41] ❏ One of the listeners expresses her lack of surprise at the incident, noting there has been a history of double standards from the onset, especially regarding Black Lives Matter. She expressed concern over what may be to come in 2021. Another guest notes the hypocrisy of the whole event, stating that during the Black Lives Matter protest, even when it was peaceful the protest was attacked, yet when this mob stormed the US Capitol building, the response was feeble. Brandon emphasizes the hypocrisy of those who claim to praise democracy when their activities were completely contrary to the tenets of any democracy following Donald Trump's loss. - [08:42] ❏ Back to the hypocrisy surrounding this situation is the fact that a person was shot while breaking into the capitol and people don't seem to recognize that she was actively committing a crime, yet when compared to the deaths of many black people who were not actively doing anything wrong, the first point of conversation is usually all their past misdeeds to somehow justify the killing. Zack still points out that the most important fact is that these killings are not justified in either case and should not be compared. - [16:15] ❏ Was Trump directly responsible for the actions of people at the Capitol? Overall there is the opinion that while Trump might have indirectly but intentionally incited the crowd, there are others to blame who directly encouraged the mob. Of course, because there was no direct instruction from the President to attack the Capitol, there may not be a legal case here but more of a moral one. Another listener expresses fears about the hold Trump still has within his few remaining days in office, describing concerns that Trump may still incite rancor and his supporters will follow. - [26:28] ❏ Trump releases a video stating there will be a peaceful transition to the next government. This in no way means he will back down from his allegations of electoral misconduct, however, if over 40% of Americans had expressed that the electoral process was dissatisfactory, this should have been addressed by Congress before the situation deteriorated. - [55:13] ❏ Discussing the reactions by social media to the events by banning Donald Trump (Twitter Instagram Facebook Snapchat and YouTube). As private institutions, they reserve the legal right to ban whoever they want. Zack rounds off with the point that Trump had a role to play in the violent outcome, but it is a flawed argument to place all the responsibility on his shoulders. Brandon closes by expressing his deep disappointment at the turn of events. - [01:10:25] FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/SayWhatNeedsSaying/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/say-what-needs-saying/support
