A movie review podcast where two lifelong friends try to close the "opinion gap" between audiences and critics.
It's just after Halloween, so we're going to quote the Sanderson Sisters: "We're baaack"! It has been an awful long time since Alex and Monica have posted, and we seriously apologize for that. We explain our hiatus in the episode, but the long and short of it is that we have been discussing some big changes for our podcast. This is a super long episode, and we are very excited to share it with you!
Hello listeners! So first things first, sorry for the late posting of this one! We experienced some technical difficulties and crazy work schedules that prevented us from getting this up at our usual time. We thank you all for your patience. In this episode, Alex and I talk about the many interpretations of Gotham City's notorious psychotic clown in anticipation of Joaquin Pheonix's newest film, "Joker". As always, we thank you so much for listening. -Monica
HELLO LISTENERS! Okay, so we're sorry for the unplanned hiatus. As it turns out, moving your entire life a state over (below?) is not a quick or easy process, and starting a new job at the same time doesn't help for sure. All that being said, we are both soooo excited to be back with a new episode this week! We're talking about the box office and critical flop "The Kitchen", starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elizabeth Moss. We've got some hot n' spicy takes on this one folks. As always, thanks so much for listening and we hope you enjoy this episode. Oh, and since I'm just now realizing that we forgot out Social Media Plug in the episode, I'm going to remind you thank you can find us at @shotforshotcast on Instagram, @shotforshotpodcast on Facebook, or at shotforshotcast.com. Happy listening! -Monica
Hello listeners! You've read that title right, I'm afraid. We didn't see a movie so we made a grab-bag instead. Our sincere apologies. Oh, and I'm moving to Florida. But don't fret for even a moment, because I've bought my own microphone and Alex and I have every intention of continuing Shot for Shot for the foreseeable future. We will return to our regular content for the next episode. In this grab-bag, Alex and I discuss some of the movie news fresh from SDCC last week and give you our new trailer reactions. As always, we thank you so much for listening! -Monica
Hello Listeners! In an unsurprising turn of events, Alex and I are going to talk about a Marvel movie. At least we're consistent. Even so, we had a really good time with this episode, and we think it will be a nice salve for all of the Marvel fans who saw this movie and left wondering what the f**k is going on. As always, we thank you so much for tuning in! Please feel free to leave us feedback on any of our social media platforms or on Apple Podcasts.
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back with a RETRO REVIEW just in time for July 4th. We've mentioned that we'd like to work our way through IMDb's modern classics list, and this is definitely one of them! We hope you enjoy listening to me gush about Jeff Goldblum, because that's going to happen quite a lot in this one. As always, we thank you so much for listening! If you enjoy us, please leave us a 5-star review so other people can find us as well. Until next time!
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back this week (A little late in the evening) with a review for a movie a little bit outside of our usual range. We had a great time discussing Olivia Wilde's directorial debut and reminiscing on our own high school days. As always, we thank you so much for listening and supporting us, it means a lot! Until next time, Monica
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are coming at ya this week with a new episode format that we’ve been considering for a while now. We’re calling it “Deep Dive” until we think of a better name. Sometimes in an episode, me and Alex find that there are topics we felt we could’ve talked more about, but had to move on from in the interest of keeping our episodes to roughly an hour. These Deep Dives are a place where we can further discuss the topic, update you on if our opinion has changed, or bring up new information. Let us know what you think! For this episode, we’re talking more about the arguably controversial “Fat Thor” in Avengers: Endgame. We discuss fatphobia, writing characters with trauma, and more! We hope you enjoy!
Hello Listeners! This week, Alex and Monica are taking on the latest attempt at bringing a video game to the big screen: Detective Pikachu! WARNING: This episode has startlingly high levels of foolishness. We're probably just giddy because we GRADUATED COLLEGE THIS WEEKEND. If you have any questions or comments for us, please feel free to contact us here or follow the links below to our Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Thanks for listening!
You didn't think we wouldn't talk about Endgame did you? The spoiler ban on Avengers: Endgame is lifted! And so, Monica and Alex are going to talk about what Alex has called one of "the biggest cultural events of the 21st century!" Avengers: Endgame has broken nearly every box office record, and is quickly catching up to James Cameron's Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time! In this spur-of-the-moment episode, Monica and Alex share their thoughts and feelings about the 3-hour epic that has been 11 years in the making! We have a lot of thoughts and opinions on the culmination of 21 films, but we also want to know what you think! Please feel free to let us know your thoughts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or our own website! Happy listening, and thank you for listening to Shot For Shot!
Yeah, you read that right. In a post-Endgame world, we decided that we needed to talk about this movie. A true cultural icon in its own right. Okay, okay; we're mostly kidding. Not about retro-reviewing this movie, though. We needed an episode for you all this Monday, and we didn't see Endgame until yesterday, so we made the obvious choice. Or the hilarious one. Either or. This episode was a bunch of fun to record, and we really hope you like it! It may even be a relief for anyone who likes movie podcasts and hasn't seen Endgame, because that's pretty much all any of them are going to be talking about. If you liked this episode, you want to ask a question or want us to address a trailer, movie news, anything in the next episode, please go to the 'Contact Us' page and send us an email or hit us up on any of our social media! We'll address your question or comment during the next recording. As always, thank you so much for listening!
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back this week to discuss the Hellboy reboot. Spoiler alert: It's not very good and we pull no punches in telling you why. In fact, we had so much to say that we had to stop ourselves before we ended up with a two hour long episode. You're welcome. If only the creators of this movie were so kind.... Anyway, as always, we thank you so much for your support! You can find us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter!
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back this week with a special episode breaking down the three-act structure you may have heard us mention once or twice in our movie reviews. You all seem to love learning with us, so we thought it was high time we do it again. Below we have links to some of the sources we mention in the episode. As always, we thank you so much for listening and supporting us. Please feel free to comment and review wherever you get your podcast content. Until next time! Hello Listeners! Alex and I are finally back with a full-length episode for you. Now, the only way you haven’t heard about this movie is if you’re living under a rock. It had an incredibly successful box office opening and there was quite a bit of controversy pre-release. There is also no shortage of opinions floating around on this film, and we’re so glad you’ve chosen to listen to ours. Alex and I disagree on a lot of points for the first time, we discuss if this film is really as feminist as it claims, we take a hard stance on Goose the Cat, and teach you a little bit about the fear of spies during the Cold War. Thank you so much for listening. Don’t forget to leave us a comment and review if you enjoyed the episode, and we’ll see you next time!
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back this week with a special Oscars episode. We will, of course, inform you of the noms and discuss our picks for the winners, but you know we had to throw in a little twist. We will also be telling you a little bit about the awards show industry, because yes, it is an industry in itself. You might be surprised. Actually, you'll probably be surprised. I know I was. Pull out your tin-foil hats, watch Roma on Netflix, and enjoy this weeks episode of Shot for Shot. Thanks for all your support, Monica
Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back this week with another full-length movie review (it's been a minute!). We're very excited to talk about Vice, an Oscar-nominated film that has proven to be a little divisive among critics and audiences alike. We'll let you decide how you fall, per usual, but we encourage you to watch it if you haven't yet and give us a listen! Thank you so much for your support! -Monica and Alex
Hello listeners! We’d like to welcome you all to our first episode of 2019! You’ll probably notice something very special right away: WE GOT A NEW MIC!!! We’re so excited about this little milestone and we hope that you are too. But that is not all of the awesome news we have for you today! We are now on SPOTIFY! Since it’s such a recent addition, it’s a little difficult to search for us directly from Spotify, but we have a link here. We also just started a Twitter account, so please give us a follow there! In this episode, we talk about the highs and lows of movies in 2018, and discuss what we’re excited about for 2019. Please keep an eye on our social media, where we’ll be asking you listeners which movies you want us to see and review. Thank you for listening in 2018, and here’s to another year of movies! -Alex and Monica
Hello Listeners! Happy Life Day! Monica and I were excited to wake up this morning to presents and figgy pudding, but felt that there was something missing. The reason for the season just wasn't quite... there. And then we realized! Solo: A Star Wars Story came out back in May of this year! So there's no Star Wars movie to fill us with that sense of grandiose galactic joy that really makes the Holiday Season worth celebrating. Monica and I decided to do something about this unfortunate situation, and save the Holidays from the evil tyranny of The Empire (Disney) by doing something we've been dancing around for quite awhile as two huge fans of a Galaxy far, far away: The George Lucas Hatecast! So strap in, focus in, and get ready to talk some SERIOUS Star Wars because, ladies and gentlemen... THIS is pod-racing! As always, huge thanks to Nick for our fantastic theme song, cooked special for Life Day! And until the new year,May the Force be with you. Hello Listeners! Alex and I have a special treat for you guys this week: an ACTUAL NEW MOVIE! We're talking about the wonderful film inspired by a true story, Green Book. This was an incredible film that did not receive the hype it deserved, but Alex and I hope to remedy that by giving you a whole bunch of reasons to check it out! If you're a fan of in-depth character study, heartwarming tales of friendship, or just good filmmaking, this movie is bound to impress! On a less exciting note, this is going to be our last regularly scheduled episode until after the holiday season. But don't fret, we do have one more Christmas surprise in store! It comes in the form of a special episode we've been promising since day one, so keep on the lookout for that! Since this is technically our last episode, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank you, listeners! We're still pretty small, so we absolutely notice all of the support you've given us. We have had so much fun since starting this adventure back in June, and we look forward to the new year. We have been tossing around some big ideas for 2019, so we're ready to take this podcast to the next level! Thank you again for all your support these past few months, and we wish you very Happy Holidays! -Monica and Alex
Hello Listeners! We've got a special treat of a throwback episode for you this week! We're talking Ocean's Eleven AND Ocean's Eleven. The Ocean's Eleven we know and love came out in 2001, but did you know it's actually a remake? We're gonna talk about both movies this week, comparing, contrasting, and determining which of the two we think is the best movie. As always, we thank you so much for listening! You can find links to our social media below and you can listen to us on Apple Podcast and Podbean. If you do listen on Apple Podcasts, please give us a 5-star rating and leave us a review! A quick note, Alex and I are planning a holiday hiatus starting sometime in December, so we'll be sure to give more information towards that soon.
Hello Listeners! We are incredibly excited to bring you this episode this week. We’ve been talking about this movie for MONTHS and let me tell you, it does not disappoint! You’ve got action, you’ve got thrills, you’ve got CHRIS HEMSWORTH LOOKING LIKE THE GOD OF THUNDER HE IS. Seriously, no one would blame you if you went just for his abs. Anyway, this movie is full of twists and turns that leave you guessing and one of the best movie soundtracks this year! We’ll get into all the nitty gritty details in the episode, of course, because me and Alex REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO SEE THIS MOVIE. And as always, we want to thank all of you who listened to our last episode, as well as those who left us reviews! THANK YOU! If you’re dying to interact with us on social media, we are @shotforshotcast on Instagram and Facebook, and our personal accounts are tagged in all of our posts. Hello Listeners! Alex and I are back this week with a very special treat. This movie has managed to create an insane divide between audiences and critics, which is exactly the grey area where Alex and I like to operate. This episode was absolutely one of our favorites to record, and we hope you enjoy listening to it. As always, we would like to thank our listeners for tuning in, and we’d like to encourage you to leave us a five-star rating and review on iTunes. Enjoy this week’s episode of Shot for Shot! -Monica
Welcome back listeners! Since Alex and I are still pretty busy with college and theatre, we decided to review a movie that's a little older but was widely ignored when it first came out. We are also so excited to have our first ever episode that features our little theme song! Many, many thanks to Nick Oakley for composing it for us! As always, we very much appreciate you listening and we ask that you rate and review us on iTunes so we can be found by other movie lovers. Enjoy the latest episode of Shot for Shot!!! -Monica
Hello Listeners! This week, Alex and I look to teach you about a new technical aspect of movies: color-grading. Whether you've noticed it or not, color-grading is part of every movie. Please continue to tell your friends about us, and if you have the time, please consider leaving us a review on iTunes. It really helps us out. Here's a link to the YouTube video Alex references in this episode. Hello again everyone! Happy Monday from your two favorite movie-loving goofballs. This week we're bringing you our first retro review! This idea was pulled right from the IMDb modern classic movie list (and this list is a pretty cool guide if you want to get caught up on the must-sees from the past 20 years or so). Fair warning: Alex and I were feeling downright silly this episode. As per usual we'd like to thank the people who keep tuning in every week and extend a warm welcome to our new listeners! Also: there are some pretty exciting plans in the works, so stay tuned for some fun new additions coming very soon. We'd also like to remind you that Apple has a strange algorithm, so if you really, really like what we do and you'd like to help us out for $0.00, you can do so by leaving us a 5-star review and writing a short comment to go with it! You don't have to say much, but anything that feeds that algorithm helps us out immensely. Thank you again for tuning in and we hope you enjoy this episode of Shot for Shot! -Monica
Hey there everyone! So, up to this point we've only covered very lighthearted movies. Summer blockbusters. Action flicks. We've talked about dinosaurs and space and superheroes. This episode is going to be very different. And because of the nature of the film, it's also very loooooong. Our longest episode yet, actually. You might also notice that this episode sounds MUCH better than episodes past. That's because we've finally discovered this hot new technology called Google, and it showed us how to improve our sound quality. Yay! As always, thank you so much for tuning in this week. We really hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do, please share! Leave us those five star reviews (it really helps us in the charts) and tell your friends about our podcast. Your continued support means the world to us! -Monica
Hello listeners! As you may have noticed already, this episode is going to be a little different. First of all, it's shorter. Some of you may be lamenting that fact (but probably not). No worries, we do still intend to do full-length episodes. Alex - the lucky son of a bitch - is in Europe, livin' it up and drinking foreign beers. But we are nothing if not committed, which is why we still have an episode for you today! In this episode, we look to teach you a little about some of the common terminology used in movie reviews. I know it may sound a little uninteresting, but Alex and I, per usual, find a way to make even learning into a jovial event. We talk a little on the 'why' in the episode, so please, join us, learn something, leave a five-star review on your preferred platform, and remember: change in the movie industry starts with us. Thank you to all of our current listeners, you guys are the best! Please, continue following us, continue telling all of your friends, and get excited, because we have lots of new things planned. To all of our new listeners: Welcome! We hope you enjoy this episode, and we hope you'll take a look at some of our other episodes. Happy listening! -Monica

There will be jokes made at the expense of overpaid/undertalented writers, clone girls who AREN’T EVEN PART DINOSAUR, and me because I forgot about the murder. All in all, this is bound to be a great start. Thank you so much for joining us on this journey, and we hope you enjoy the first episode of Shot for Shot. -Monica
