This week we discuss two new tools I found. Natalie Sea proposes use of The Story Circle and a 4 Act Structure using a modified list of story beats based on Save the Cat. See how these come together nicely in helping us plot out compelling stories.
Let's Go Again: A Philosophical and Practical Guide for Indie Creatives
Hi!IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR INDIE ARTISTS:What's the difference between the independent artist who spends all their brain power on trying to “hack the system” to gain more followers and an independent artist who says whatever they want, whenever they want, how they want, with no algorithmic rhyme or reason and can still sit back and watch their career and audience grow?If you think it's “right place/right time” magical luck, you'd be sadly mistaken.Or, if you're certain *some* art is just more popular than others, that's not it either. If you're guessing:* they'd have to be famous…* or maybe they've been working on it for decades…* or they have a trust fund, so they can actually put time and effort into their growth strategies? That's a no, no, and absolutely not. While some of these situations could potentially help, they're not where real power exists. In all of those examples, the artist is still relying on outside forces of time, money, luck, or status. But real power (life-changing power) isn't built from time, money, luck, or status. It's built from attention. And what drives attention?Writing that hooks. If you could grow your career by using writing that hooks instead of chasing constantly-changing algorithms, would you finally take yourself seriously? In today's episode, I'm going to convince you of the power of writing that hooks AND I'm going to show you how to do it.IN TODAY'S EPISODE, we'll answer these questions:* Why is writing the most important skill for indie artists?* How does writing that hooks push your career forward?* Why should I spend time on writing when I have so many other important things to do as an independent artist?* How can I use specifics to quickly hook my reader?* How does tension work in hooky writing?* What do the 3-Act and 5-Act Structure writing models prove about writing that hooks?* Why is my audience's “repetition of ideas” an important part of my career growth?MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:
Andy Barr would be Byronic if Byron weren't an absolute nightmare and wore more interesting shirts. The tragic clown, a master of turns of phrase and void-staring. I wish I could describe him better but the fact is I'm not as good at describing Andy Barr as Andy Barr would be because he's amazing. Alongside a superb set, Andy talks to host and MC James Ross about mental health, the 3 Act Structure of sets and just checking in on whether he's ok. How did Rowling deliver on the life-and-death stakes an action story requires, but in a way appropriate for middle-grade readers? How did she consistently weave together the external plot and Harry's character arc in such a way that they're inseparable?Tune into this episode to hear Abigail K. Perry and I talk through the plot structure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone using the Story Grid's Five Commandments of Storytelling. Yep, we've broken down the beginning, middle, and end of the first Harry Potter book so you don't have to. Cool, right? You'll hear us talk about things like:02:26] The structure of the beginning hook—aka how Rowling introduced us to Harry and immersed us in his world before sending him to Hogwarts. [10:08] How the middle build-up leads to the all-important midpoint moment. What will Harry do now that his life's been threatened by a teacher?[22:56] How the middle breakdown brings Harry to an all-time low—and why this is critical in terms of Harry's growth and ability to defeat Voldemort[27:57] The structure of the ending payoff—aka how Rowling continued to raise the stakes and delivered an awesome Hero At The Mercy Of The Villain scene[32:25] And so much more…If you like this episode, you'll LOVE my book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: A Story Grid Masterwork Analysis Guide. Tempted as you may be to break the mould, sometimes sticking with the classics is the way to go. Specifically in today's episode of The Resilient Writers Radio Show, we're talking about a classic story structure—the essential three act structure. In this first episode of Season 2, Rhonda Douglas explains in some detail how the three act structure works, and how it helps with everything from plots to scenes to helping us avoid a passive protagonist. Readers love a story that wraps up neatly, and we can use the structure to ensure we don't leave important threads hanging.
Join Jason as he discusses story structure as identified by Aristotle and Joseph Campbell through the lens of Jurassic Park. A great, accessible intro to the concepts!

Three acts aren't enough. If you're stuck in the middle of your story, try this four-act structure instead.Recently, a writer told me she was stuck in the middle of her story. She'd written the complete first draft. She'd gotten an editor's feedback. She was editing her second draft, and she'd made it just past the fifty percent mark. And then . . . she got stuck. After all that, she had no idea what should come next. No idea how to make everything from the midpoint to the climax interesting. So I gave her a solution: Split your story into four acts.Three-act structure is our default approach to storytelling. But it's not enough. So I use four-act structure instead. And in this episode, I'll tell you why. You'll learn:The critical flaw with three-act story structureWhy four-act structure makes writing the middle of your story almost easyWhat each of the four acts must include (act three is my favorite!)And more!If you're feeling lost in the middle of your story, I invite you to listen in and discover a simple path to “The End.”And even if you're not feeling lost right now, give it a listen and get fresh inspiration for every part of your story.By the way, that writer who was feeling stuck? She loved this four-act approach to stories . . . and so did everyone else in her writing group. Every single person told me some version of, “Oh! This makes so much sense. And I'm feeling so inspired now!”What will you discover about your story with this four-act story structure?Support the showWant more editing tips and resources? It's easy to fall into the trap of making our interviews all about the guest. Sure it means we get to tick the box that says “I showed up today”. But what value are we really creating for our listener? In this episode, I'm going to show you how you can make your guests feel like a hero while helping your listener overcome a difficult challenge. The more helpful we are to our listener, the more they trust us. The more they trust us, the more they'll want to work with us, buy our products, and join our communities.Key points Structure your podcast interviews around a central question or problem that your listeners are facing. Use a condensed version of the Hero's Journey to structure the interview into three parts: the guest, and how they discovered the answer to the listener's problem the problem itself, going into more detail or discussing the challenges the listener: how they can apply what the guest has learned, to solve their problem
We'll be talking about the three-act structure. This classic model for narrative fiction can help you break down your writing into more manageable pieces. It can also help you consider the pacing and progression of your story. #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery writes novels about the relationships that define women's lives—family, friendship, romance. After writing more than 100 books, she has a writing process that includes prewriting, plotting using the 3 Act Structure, and figuring out the GMC (goal, motivation, conflict). Tess and Karen loved hearing how she struggles with naming characters and how cognizant she is of not repeating herself out of respect for her readers. A master storyteller, Susan's interview was full of personal stories, both humorous and touching.Enjoy! A transcript of this episode is available on my website, as well as info about my books and how to sign up for my newsletter. That's also where you can find out more about my new podcast, Pub Dates, which will take you behind the scenes on my upcoming novel The Isles of the Gods.
