Episode 168 - Increasing Influence Through Community

Women Finishing Well

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2022 23:11

In this episode, we explore another life habit on the journey back to our heart called influencing through community. Where has God placed you in life to influence people for Jesus? You might be surprised. Show Notes & Links -We'll start with a review of our purpose in this next leg of the journey: Renew -Renew is where we're learning how to integrate spiritual habits into our everyday lives that will keep us at the center of our hearts with God. -Renew is also about fortifying our legacy of faith with the people God has put in our lives. Who are your people? -We all have an everyday, ordinary life where God gives us an opportunity to influence others for Him. -How can you identify your circles of influence? Who has God put in your life? -Learning the unforced rhythms of grace. -Is church attendance sufficient to develop the kind of community that Jesus calls us to? Scripture references in this episode: Deuteronomy 31: 12-13 Matthew 11:28-30 (The Message) Romans 12:1 (The Message) Hebrews 12:1-2 Hebrews 10:24-25 How to find your communities of influence: Our lives are filled with groups of people we regularly move in and out of. We may not know all the people by name or have relationships with them outside those places, but we can develop a level of influence with them that reveals love and hope to them by the way we value their presence in our lives. Let's think about what some of those groups might be.  Start a page in your journal called My Communities of Influence. As I give you these examples, maybe there are others you can think of in addition to the ones mentioned. Write them down in your journal as well. This will become a prayer list. Remember, you may or may not know their names. Just write down a phrase describing who they are if you don't. They could be people you interact with in a club or hobby setting like a Bunco group, or a card-playing group, a book club, yoga class members, or a crafting group. They could be service providers you interact with regularly like grocery store clerks, baristas, home care providers, mail and delivery people, childcare workers, hair stylists, house cleaners, or the checkout person at Staples. Use your imagination. Who do you see in a day? They could be people at church you visit with but don't socialize with outside of the church. They could be people you work with but don't spend time with outside of work. Neighbors you don't socialize with. You may see them at the  mailbox, but you don't really know them. Circle the people on this list you don't have a name for. Make a point over the next month to find out their name and come back to your list and write it down. Dale Carnegie who wrote the classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People wrote, “a person's name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language. Start calling them by name when you see them. This should be easy in most stores because employees are usually wearing a name tag. Greet them by name; smile at them. If your communities of influence are just one or two, add a prayer request to this list asking God to open the eyes of your heart to see the people around you every day that need a word of encouragement. Also, just a hint from doing this in my own life. If you go to the store or the coffee shop at the same time of day, usually you will start seeing more of the same people. Look around—take notice of the people God is putting in your life. These are the people He is asking you to influence for Him. Mark Roseman opens Lives Reclaimed, his compelling history of the “Bund”—a leftist communitarian group that resisted fascism and protected Jews during the Reich—with a quote from Michael Ondaatje's novel The Cat's Table: “That was a small lesson I learned on the journey. What is interesting and important happens mostly in secret, in places where there is no power.” Roseman, a professor of Jewish and German Studies at University of Indiana at Bloomington, joins Matthew to paint a picture of methodical, relational, and spiritual resistance to the speed and terror of fascism. At the center of the conversation is the quandary of how the Bund made generative use of many of the same naturalistic and spiritualist ideals and practices that were central to the physical culture of fascism. Joining the panel are Peter Staudenmaier, professor of modern Germany history at Marquette, and Rebecca Carter-Chand, historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Peter and Rebecca add their expertise on the tangled ferment of religious and ideological passions in the background of Nazism, and how persistent, even through the worst of times, our flickers of altruism and empathy can be.But before all that: we'll cover the Q-pilled assassination attempt on Nancy Pelosi that has left Paul Pelosi in urgent care, and far-right media scrambling to overwrite the facts.Show NotesLives Reclaimed — RosemanDr. Rebecca Carter-Chand — United States Holocaust Memorial MuseumDr. Peter Staudenmaier - History  The Futurist Manifesto Filippo Tommaso Marinetti The Awful Truth: Paul Pelosi Was Drunk Again, And In a Dispute With a Male Prostitute Early Friday Morning.Pelosi attack suspect David DePape shared conspiracy theoriesCriminal complaint: David DepapeDepape's archived sitePelosi attacker was immersed in 2020 election conspiracies-- -- --Support us on PatreonStay in touch with us on Twitter: @derekberes @julianmwalker @matthewremskiOriginal music by EarthRise SoundSystem

Down With My Demons: The Shadow Work Path

Time is something we can't escape though sometimes it seems to evade us. The pace at which we want things to happen is not always the timing that brings them about and it can feel so defeating when they don't arrive on our time. We often say we don't have enough time in our lives, that time isn't on our side. Time is swiftly passing us by. What if we changed our perspective and narrative around time to one that worked with us? One that we could flow WITH and through. Time that supported us and gave us freedom like we've never known could be the game changer we are looking for.The time is now. Making a Connection Between Jazz and Gardening In This Podcast: Like many people during the pandemic, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Shapiro suddenly found herself at home staring at an empty calendar.  To fill the time, she turned her attention to decorating the unattractive cement spaces outside her home.  One potted plant led to another and another, and they grew into a gardening obsession which, at first, seemed so different from her jazz roots.  But the deeper she dug into gardening, the more she discovered that nature held lessons that transposed beautifully into music.  Lizzy's garden changed not just the view outside her home, but also her view of the world. Don't miss an episode! visit UrbanFarm.Org/blog/podcast   Elizabeth "Lizzy" Shapiro is a screenwriter, actress and musician. As a screenwriter, she has created TV shows alongside Hollywood heavyweights like Ben Stiller and Joey Soloway, as well as creating and starring in "The Crossroads of History" which received 2 Emmy nominations. As a musician, she trained as an opera singer and is currently the front woman of Lizzy & the Triggermen. Dubbed "10-piece jazz sensations" by LA Weekly, the band's debut album, "Good Songs for Bad Times," hit #3 on iTunes Jazz Charts (just behind Miles Davis). Their music simultaneously transports you to a prohibition speakeasy while feeling arrestingly modern, thanks to the powerhouse vocals and songwriting of Lizzy. Their eerily prophetic original song, "Dance Song (for the End of the World)" garnered international press for its music video which featured dancers all over the world at the beginning of lock down. The band has been forging exciting new paths for modern big band and swing music: headlining some of the top music venues in the country, opening for the UK rock band Squeeze, and being selected as Official Artists of SXSW. This episode is all about cash. And it applies to our personal finances and the companies we're investing in.Bryce and Alec explain what the definition of a recession is and how the market generally reacts.Basically, in a recession money dries up. Banks become less willing to lend, interest rates are up, credit risks are higher. Investors become less willing to invest as they are generally losing money 'elsewhere' ... they become more risk averse. This episode is brought to you by Sharesies - https://sharesies.com.au/For more market news and investing resources, follow @Sharesiesau or visit the Learn section of their website.****Calling all bulls, bears and party animals. The market's closed and the bar is open.
