Santigold is an artist who exists at the cross-section of punk, dub, new wave and indie pop. Long frustrated with attempts like these to classify her style, Santi has always been a proud outlier among the restrictive categories used to divide music. Santi's anti-establishment bent was in part a reaction to working as an A&R for Epic Records' black music department. Frustrated with what they categorized as “urban music” in the early aughts, Santi left her job, went home to Philly, and started a punk band called Stiffed. After honing her chops for a few years as a lead singer, Santi released her debut solo album, Santigold in 2008. The album's lead singles “Creator” and “L.E.S. Artistes” were a revelation when they came out, and led to Santi headlining tours around the world and even opening shows for Bjork, Coldplay, Jay-Z and the Beastie Boys. Now with three other albums to her credit, including last year's soul-stirring Spirituals, Santigold is celebrating the 15th anniversary of her debut release. And today she's expanded her artistic endeavors to include a podcast called Noble Champions where she mines the creative life with friends like Olivia Wilde, Questlove and Yasiin Bey. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Santigold about the unique path she took to build her solo career. Santi also shares why she decided to cancel her tour last year with a heartfelt public letter that shared insight into the financial and emotional toll of touring post-pandemic. For a very special episode, comedic actor and writer Steve Berg joins the program! For those that aren't familiar with Steve's name, you're very likely to recognize his face, as he's guested on many popular shows like New Girl, The Goldbergs, Drunk History, Adventure Time, Bob's Burgers and more! He's also played supporting comedic roles in popular movies like TAG, and even a small part in Olivia Wilde's movie, Don't Worry Darling. All that, and Steve is as warm and genuine as a good friend that you've grown up with! And not only was he easy to get along with, but he was also far more insightful than some people might give a comedian credit for. Alas, I actually spent so much time talking to Steve before hitting record that I was unable to remain for the actual podcast... Luckily, I was able to get my strange acquaintance, codename: Jefferson Tillamookslinger (a "former Illuminati cloning lab manager") on the call with Steve. Their conversation includes things like: whether or not Steve is in the CIA and/or Illuminati, the humble beginnings of Steve's acting career in Aunt Maybelle Productions, Hollywood Cloning-Couches, Bob's Burgers, Henry Rollins, unexplainable phenomena like UFOs and raining sky-meat, Steve's new show Hi Strangeness and so much more. My very special guest today is Singer & Songwriter, Emily Halpern. I regard these two things in life as highly valuable. The Gift of Laughter - I can never repay the gift of the laughter that someone shared with me. The Gift of Music I can never repay a music artist for the gift of their music, and how it makes me feel. I can never fully explain to them how life wouldn't be nearly as sweet for living without the gift of their music. Theses are gifts that I can never repay in full. I was aware of Emily Halpern's writing years before I knew who she was or had met her. Her words had made me laugh, so many countless nights watching Black-Ish, of which she was a writer and Producer from 2016 - 2017. And who could forget “Booksmart” Directed by Olivia Wilde written by Emily Halpern, Susan Vogel, Sarah Haskins and Katie Silberman? Those laughs made my cheeks sting pink. Booksmart laughs were guilty pleasure laughs for sure. I was introduced to her when I created a “Love Letter to Luqcues”. Lucques was the infamous restaurant in LA owned by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, and operated by General Manager Matt Duggan. It had closed during covid, for good. I was looking for love stories on the patrons of Lucques. Matt Duggan said that I should speak to Emily Halpern, a screenwriter. And when I did, Emily Halpern had one of the sweetest love stories of all. You see, Emily had her second date with her husband Evan at Lucques, tucked away in a corner table in the bar. The way Emily tells it, They both knew they had found each other's soulmate that night. They had their wedding at Lucques. And, Their first born daughter Franny just missed her very first Sunday Super at Lucques before the Pandemic shut everything down.
