The Invite is the third movie directed by Olivia Wilde, her followup to Don’t Worry Darling. Hopefully, we won't feel burned by the new one and no movie gets roasted, but who's to say? We also review the Olivia Wilde's new dramedy The Invite and so much more!

To make a good movie, you can take something expected (your standard romantic comedy, good vs. evil, etc.) and execute it at a high level, or you can take a familiar situation and keep tossing unexpected things at the audience to keep them on their toes.With that second scenario, it's still necessary — and arguably more difficult — to do it well, which is what Olivia Wilde seems to have pulled off with her third directorial effort, The Invite.The nature of the project almost required Wilde and the cast (including herself) to tap into their crazier creative impulses. The setting is a single location. The centerpiece is a couples dinner party, which most grown-ups will tell you isn't the place to go mining for high-quality entertainment. That all gets turned on its head pretty quickly, when the dinner-party invitation is reciprocated with a sex-party invitation.As you'll hear Dori and Kpolly discuss in this episode, the very adventurous offer is only the start of what makes The Invite such a good watch. The tension shifts throughout, as discomfort ventures into curiosity. The single-location setting demands inventive cinematography that bounces shots off mirrors and uses clever camera angles to capture the action.And, yes, there is action — just not the shoot-em-up variety. The dialogue is sharp and paced in such a way that it manages to get your adrenaline pumping by building tension and then letting it release as the quartet of characters navigate a night that doesn't go quite how anyone expected.The four-person cast hit just right, too, even though the original stars (including Amy Adams, Paul Rudd and Tessa Thompson) wound up giving way as the project was stuck in a holding pattern for a couple years. The on-screen group of Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton fit together nicely, aided by touches like Rogen's improv and the serious backstory Norton gave his character.Maybe the most unexpected thing that Dori and Kpolly found was the heart interlaced throughout the film, which balanced what could've been an uncomfortable snark-fest. With the 4th of July in the rearview mirror, we are nearing (or past, depending on how you measure it) the midpoint of summer and for many of us, that means a little extra time to catch up on all the books, movies, and music that is being released this year. To break down the summer culture standouts, Chloe was joined in the studio by Vogue's Deputy Editor Taylor Antrim and Senior Fashion Writer Hannah Jackson.  The trio began by discussing the major sports moment that seems to be happening even more this summer than ever before. There's no shortage of sports to watch—the recent Knicks victory, the WNBA season, Wimbledon and the US Open, the World Cup, and the Tour de France. Taylor, who has been following the cycling, is most closely watching Tadej Pogačar (who apparently looks uncannily like his son) and Jonas Vingegaard, whose beautiful love story was covered in our I.W.W.T.H. column.  They then moved onto cinema. Taylor, as the resident horror watcher, shouted out the two big horror films that have stormed the summer box offices: Backrooms and Obsession, both directed by up and comers. Honorable mentions also went out to The Invite, a film they all saw and loved from Olivia Wilde, and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma from indie darling Jane Schoenbrun.  The movie with perhaps the most buzz at Vogue this summer is Christopher Nolan's upcoming remake of The Odyssey. “It's a thinking person's blockbuster,” Taylor joked. Though the panelists couldn't reach consensus on Oppenheimer, they are all jazzed about this pick (though Hannah is a little skeptical of Matt Damon as Odysseus). In keeping with the theme of Odyssey Summer, Chloe's been reading Greek myths to her children for bedtime stories and listening to the podcast Greeking Out. When not reading children's books, Chloe is excited about this summer's literary offerings, especially those featured in our beach reads story for the summer issue. Some of the picks they have previewed or are looking forward to include Pool House by Mary H.K. Choi, Contrapposto by Dave Eggers, Freedom Essays by Zinzi Clemmons, The Land and Its People by David Sedaris, The Palm House by Gwendolyn Riley, and Book of Hours by Ellen O'Connell Whittet.  It's also no secret that this has been yet another summer for the pop girls. The late writer Christopher Hitchens, a friend of the family, was her babysitter. She grew up in a world of words, a world of stories, a world of speaking truth to power. We remember one of the most sought-after directors in television, James Burrows. He died June 19 at age 85. Burrows worked on many classic sitcoms including ‘Taxi,' ‘Frasier,' ‘Friends,' ‘Will and Grace' and ‘Cheers.' He was known for his comedic instincts, his visual style, and for insisting the comedy be believable. Burrows spoke with Terry Gross in 2006.
