Happy Life Day and Happy New Year! Join the First Steps Crew as we discuss "The Star Wars Holiday Special" and wrap up our coverage of the Original Trilogy!
This week, join four brothers and a dad as they review the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. They also share their thoughts on the first four episodes of Percy Jackson Season 2, and then look ahead to 2026 to talk about the Disney releases they're most excited for next year.
Happy Life Day!

The GIJOE Holiday Special was produced by Joe Slepski and Ted Jacobson Written by Joe Slepski Musical Segments produced by Ted Jacobson All GIJOE characters are owned by Hasbro and celebrity voices were impersonated. Except Santa Claus. He's very real. This is a loving tribute to our favorite afterschool cartoon, filtered through the legendary Star Wars Holiday Special and an absolute joy to put together due to the incredible talents of our cast. Derrick LeMont (Alpine) is a super talented actor and delight to work with, based out of Los Angeles. You've seen him on Black Lightning and the TV series Them! Check out his IMDB page and follow him! Rammel Chan (Quick Kick) is one of my great creative friends, who took time from his busy stage and screen career (Chicago Med, Somebody Somewhere, I Used to Go Here) to lend us his brilliance. Watch his IMDB page for some exciting new ventures! Joe Goltz (Bazooka) is a longtime creative partner of mine, friend and more importantly, an amazing Trombone player in the Youngblood Brass Band. If you don't know them, educate yourself and thank me later. Paul Galliano (Firefly) Paul is an actor that always delivers, a major GIJOE friend and more importantly a great friend of mine. One of the nicest, most talented people you'll ever know, give him a follow and a Yo Joe! Mark Silgalis (Major Bludd) has been a friend of mine since High School! He played Bludd in our Cold Slither episode and absolutely showed up with his performance here! Bulldogs for life! Phil Morris (Mr. T) Phil Morris is a Hollywood staple. You've seen him on Knight Rider, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Doom Patrol, he was Smallville's Martian Manhunter, and he is Seinfeld's Jackie Chiles! What a gentleman and friend, follow Phil and give him some GIJOE fan love. Doug Erholtz (Jackie Love) previously our Columbo, brought DIC's very own Jackie Love to life. Doug has voiced dozens of Anime and Video Game characters, from Street Fighter's Vega, Final Fantasy's Squall to the main Care Bear himself, Grumpy Bear. Find him at fan conventions and say hello from Joe on Joe! Mike Irrizzary (General Hawk) of the What's on Joe Mind Podcast once again returned as General Hawk and he's so good, we need to lobby Hasbro to cast him officially. Mike is a great friend and podcaster and you need to listen to What's on Joe Mind every week! Plug the show! Josh Eggebeen (Tiger Force Outback) Josh runs the After Action Report books and you won't find a more comprehensive look at the comic books of GIJOE than the AAR Books. Check them out! Colton Adams (Tollbooth) is a young actor making a big splash on stage and screen, as his growing IMDB page can attest to. He's such a bright light and I am insanely proud to see him following his dreams. John Pearson (Shipwreck) doesn't realize I'm going to be writing Shipwreck stories where he and Polly get into wacky adventures and Shipwreck learns life lessons. This talent is now in the fold! Josh D. King (Dee-Jay) is a multi-hyphenate talent. Not only is he a musical force, with songs on Spotify and Apple music, but has a new clothing brand, Incklined and a wonderfully successful children's book, I'm a Brilliant Little Black Boy. I was so happy he could join us, as I've been friends with his incredible father for many years now. Talent doesn't fall far from the tree! Our Satin and Weird Al musical segments were written and produced by Ted Jacobson! Wonderful writing brought to life by the vocal stylings of Chiquita Bakana as Satin, and the trio of Rocky Sams, Dimitry Karev & Micko D performing the Weird Al Polka Tribute. Ted has put together complete music videos to go with them on his BarkingFridge YouTube channel. Follow him and subscribe! Matt Plassman (Mainframe) is still tracking Santa, from writers rooms across Hollywood. An incredibly talented writer and continues to bring Mainframe to delightfully nerdy life. Monkees for life. Kevin Brennan (Wild Bill) Everything is bigger in Texas, but nothing bigger than the heart on Writer, Actor and Producer Kevin Brennan. Look for his hilarious movie, It's a Disaster on streamers everywhere. Chrisi Talyn Saje and Jeremy Saje (Cobra Newscasters) Chrisi is the force behind an amazing radio drama podcast, Madison On The Air. With Jeremy as producer, Madison travels through real life vintage radio dramas, bringing modern ridiculousness to vintage episodes. Give that show a listen and follow, they're wonderful friends. Lizzie Czerner (Mary Lou Retton) is just talent through and through. You've heard her before on our My Special Missions episode and she played Satin in our Cold Slither Behind the Rock. This time she brought the effervescent and iconic Mary Lou Retton to pre-recorded life. Brilliant! Rebekah Walendzak Slepski (Cover Girl) Toilet'eel herself brought our favorite Wolverine driver to life. Rebekah is as talented as she is lovely, sharp witted and the kindest sketch comedy instructor/union organizer/actress/writer/director you'll ever meet. None of this would happen without her, so blame her. And as always, I thank you listeners for your years of support, as we head into our 10th year of doing Joe on Joe! I appreciate you more than you'll ever know. And now you Joe, and Joeing is half the battle. Happy holidays everyone! Sarah and Joe decided to celebrate by watching the Star Wars Holiday Special. Days later, it's still unclear to me why we did this to ourselves. Why did we watch Chewbacca's dad imagine a sexy lady singing to him? Why did Princess Leia sing a song to the main theme tune? Why was GM running the equivalent of campaign ads in 1978? Absolutely nothing makes sense in this special and neither of us think you should watch it. So instead, enjoy Life Day by just listening to us talk about it!

Today we take a very strange detour to discuss cinematic parallels, a sitcom about bear-men, and a rat the size of a bicycle. The question is... could this be Cassie's new favorite Star Wars movie?
This week, we unwrap the most infamous gift the galaxy has ever given us: The Star Wars Holiday Special — a 1978 fever dream so bizarre even George Lucas pretends it never happened.Join us as we journey to Kashyyyk for Life Day, meet Chewbacca's deeply unsettling family, endure musical numbers no Jedi could save, and ask the big question: How did this get made… and why did anyone let it air?Expect Wookiee grunts, disco‑era chaos, Bea Arthur running a cantina, and the kind of festive weirdness that makes you question your own reality.Grab your robes, light your Life Day orbs, and strap in — this is the most wonderfully terrible corner of the Star Wars universe, and we're diving in head‑first
On 17th November 1978, CBS aired the first ever Star Wars spin-off — a chaotic, disco-tinged Christmas variety show featuring Wookiee domestic life, baffling guest stars, and the on-screen debut of Boba Fett. It aired once… and then disappeared. But Star Wars has fans. And fans do not let things disappear. In this Geekstorians Christmas Special, we unwrap the unbelievable true story of the Star Wars Holiday Special: its overnight vanishing act, the bootleg trail that kept it alive, the obsessive hunt for surviving recordings, the rise of fan archivists determined to clean up every frame, and the moment this forgotten piece of TV slowly drifted back into the galaxy — in ways no one in 1978 could ever have predicted.Featuring Wookiees, VHS tapes, Boba Fett's origins, questionable musical numbers, and the fandom that refused to let the strangest artefact in Star Wars history fade away.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. This week, Geektown Radio does something a little different.Instead of our usual round-table discussion, Dave goes solo for a special end-of-year episode, looking back at what kind of year 2025 actually was for television, streaming, and the industry as a whole. This isn't a “best of” list or a countdown. It's a reflection on a year where shows moved platforms, franchises returned in strange new forms, cancellations came faster and colder than ever, and streaming finally stopped pretending the money was infinite.Along the way, we talk about:ITVX quietly becoming one of the most useful platforms of the yearThe annual US TV Bloodbath, and why it felt different in 2025How Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video, and Hulu play by very different rulesWhy franchises don't end anymore, they just come back wearing a hatWhat video game adaptations finally seem to be getting rightThe shows that proved TV can still be genuinely brilliant And why 2025 was the year the industry stopped expanding and started reorganising itselfWe also wrap up with a look ahead to 2026, a thank you to everyone who listens, reads, and supports Geektown, and a short message for anyone finding this time of year a little heavy.Plus, we tee up our Geekstorians Christmas special — The Hunt for the Star Wars Holiday Special, dropping this week.Geektown Radio will be taking a short break in January, but we'll be back in February 2026.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Merry Christmas, everybody! The last day of our Culkin Keatmas is upon us, and with it, our final gift to you. Jim and I break down the Star Wars Holiday Special and take it for all it's worth. Wookiee porn, deeply unfunny instructional videos, ill-fitting helmets, and hours of uncaptioned Wookiee dialog are considered and de-coded but we're still left with the big question... Why? Since all involved have disowned the project we may never know. But whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Life Day or any other tradition that aims to turn the coldest, darkest part of the year into something more, you are in our thoughts, and you have our gratitude for all the love and support you've shown us this past year. The bizarre, incoherent ‘Star Wars Holiday Special' was broadcast only once, on 17th November, 1978. Despite CBS signing up the stars of the original movie - Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, the plot swapped epic battles for a bizarre variety show filled with cameos from Harvey Korman, Bea Arthur, and Jefferson Starship. The story revolves around Chewbacca's family as celebrate “Life Day” on their home planet, Kashyyyk. George Lucas' initial vision was for a sombre, character-driven tale. But instead, it evolved into a chaotic blend of guest star sketches, dodgy green screens, and musical numbers. Lucas reportedly hated it so much he wished to destroy every copy with a sledgehammer. Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why Fisher ended up singing a new song to the tune of John Williams's Star Wars theme; consider how Disney attempted to scrub the memory of the Special from the Star Wars canon after acquiring Lucasfilm; and contemplate the wisdom of making Wookies - who speak an unintelligible language, with no subtitles - the stars of the show… Further Reading: • ‘The Star Wars Holiday Special: A Retrospective' (Empire, 2009): https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/star-wars-holiday-special/ • ‘Star Wars Holiday Special: Inside the Confusing Christmas Special' (Thrillist, 2017): https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/star-wars-holiday-special • 'The Star Wars Holiday Special' (CBS, 1978): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxtSX1lg8rE Love the show? In the years that followed, Stuart used his skills in a variety of ways at ILM including working on Return of the Jedi creature costumes like Admiral Ackbar, Nein Nunb and Ree Yees, and on many projects from Dragonslayer to Ghostbusters to Jurassic Park. This week on RFR, Stuart joins us In The Cantina to share fascinating stories about working on the Star Wars Original Trilogy and beyond. Plus, our review of Star Wars Visions season 3 and Jimmy Mac had the opportunity to see a Star Wars Holiday Special legend perform live in Chicago. Listen to find out who it was!
