Ari Aster is back with his fourth feature film, Eddington, a further departure from the horror of Hereditary, and a closer intrusion into the horror of our current reality. The film is a dark satire of May 2020 in America, focusing on the local mayoral election of a small town in rural New Mexico, torn and twisted by the pandemic and the internet. From A24, Eddington stars Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, and more. Listen for our full in-depth thoughts. Spoilers start at 37:24

Send us a textSheriff Joe Cross patrols a small New Mexico town where tension simmers beneath the surface. It's May 2020, and the pandemic has unleashed a torrent of fear, conspiracy, and mistrust that threatens to tear Eddington apart. When we meet Joaquin Phoenix's Sheriff Cross, he's a man grasping for control – of his town, his marriage to Emma Stone's increasingly distant wife, and the looming threat of COVID-19. His power struggle with Pedro Pascal's Mayor Ted Garcia initially plays as absurdist comedy, filled with mask debates and protocol disputes that feel simultaneously ridiculous and unnervingly familiar. But Aster isn't interested in simple pandemic nostalgia or pointed finger-wagging.As protests ignite following George Floyd's murder, the film transforms into something far more dangerous. Phoenix's fragile authority figure, obsessed with maintaining power he never truly possessed, descends into paranoia and violence. What follows is a white-knuckle thriller that examines how quickly social order can collapse when trust erodes and technology weaponizes our worst impulses.Aster's genius lies in refusing to choose sides. His unflinching camera examines everyone – from performative activists to conspiracy theorists, from power-hungry officials to corporate puppeteers. The result feels like a definitive artistic statement about America's fractured landscape, where phones replace six-shooters and the true villains might not be who we expect.Darius Khondji's breathtaking cinematography captures both the vast emptiness of the New Mexico desert and the claustrophobic tension of a community at war with itself. The performances, particularly Phoenix's slow-burning descent into madness, elevate this beyond typical genre exercises into something genuinely haunting.Eddington is that rare film that feels immediately essential – a time capsule created in the moment, yet with the clarity that usually comes only with distance. It leaves us with troubling questions about where we've been and where we're headed. Watch it now and be part of the conversation about one of the year's most provocative cinematic achievements.Support the show

Film Overview Title: Eddington (2025) by Ari Aster Setting: Small-town New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic Premise: Tension and division between a local sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and the town's mayor (Pedro Pascal), reflecting broader cultural and social fractures in America. Themes: Polarization, the influence of social media, performative activism, the corporatization of crisis, and the psychological weight of 2020. Cast & Performances Joaquin Phoenix (Sheriff Joe Cross): Widely praised for his layered, committed performance. Considered perfect for the role. Pedro Pascal (Mayor Ted Garcia): Serves as a foil to Phoenix's sheriff. Also well-cast, though not a co-lead. Emma Stone: Mixed feelings about her casting due to age and tone. Some discussion of alternative casting. Austin Butler: Divisive but ultimately defended. His character is seen as representative of evangelical or conspiracy-driven youth. A recurring homeless man character is discussed as a possible metaphor for society's ignored truths or the prophetic outsider. Cinematography & Technical Merits Director of Photography: Darius Khondji (corrected after initially being misattributed to Bruno Delbonnel) Visuals praised as among the best of the year—shot in New Mexico using real locations, lighting used to evoke horror pacing and psychological tension. Stylistic comparisons to Hereditary and Seven. Return of Ari Aster's visual motifs: isolation, daylight-to-night transitions, and symbolic elevation (e.g., houses on hills). Genre & Stylistic Notes Described as: “Not quite a horror film, but horror-influenced” A blend of satire, tragedy, psychological thriller, dark comedy, and drama Compared to: No Country for Old Men (tone and landscape) Robert Altman's Nashville (ensemble structure and social chaos) King of Comedy and Taxi Driver (Scorsese comparisons in the spoiler section) Rejection of Coen Brothers comparisons as too simplistic Thematic Analysis (Spoiler Section) Fragmentation of Reality: The main theme is how social media algorithms and performative digital culture drive people apart. Bothsides-ism: The film avoids heroes or villains; it's more about the system manipulating everyone. Performative Activism: Especially embodied in the youth protest scenes—young people react to national injustices despite their local irrelevance. Corporate Exploitation: A data center being built in the town is the real power move while townsfolk are distracted by culture wars. The Sheriff as a Symbol: Joe Cross embodies both traditional authority and the poisoned populism of social media-age politics. Final Acts of Violence: Symbolize collapse under social pressure and loss of moral compass. ⭐️ Ratings Michael: 4 out of 5 stars – “Bold, sharp, close to perfect…” Dave: 4 out of 5 stars – “Difficult but essential viewing… very funny, deeply human…”

Eddington tar oss tilbake til 2020 for å si «this you?». God lytt :)
“I'm personally desperate for art that at least attempts to grapple with whatever the hell is going on right now,” the writer-director Ari Aster tells Adam Howard, a senior producer of the Radio Hour. “ ‘Eddington' is a film about a bunch of people who . . . know that something's wrong. They just—nobody can agree on what that thing is.” Many of us would prefer to forget a fearful time like the spring and summer of 2020, but Aster is relentless about putting his characters and his audience in states of anxiety, whether in his horror films “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” or in the more genre-bending “Beau Is Afraid.” “Eddington,” his latest, is a neo-noir Western featuring a gun-toting, libertarian sheriff, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who confronts COVID, the George Floyd protests, and a mysterious A.I. data center that's being built in his county. It's like a hand grenade tossed into the traditional summer-movie season. The film is unapologetically political, but its satire doesn't spare either side of the aisle. “My concern,” Aster admits, “is that I don't know how much of a hunger people have anymore for anything controversial or challenging.”

we're back to covering new film releases, although i thought the HAIM episode was pretty dope. go check it out. anyway, Eddington is so, so good. it's poignant without being self-important, entertaining without sacrificing thoughtfulness, and hilarious while being empathetic. the movie is set in May of 2020 when we were all wearing masks (or should have been, unless you're in a car by yourself, but then again, if you were doing that, i don't really mind, but some of the characters in Eddington probably were) and wiping down our groceries and emergency stock-piling two-ply. Joaquin Phoenix plays a sheriff who gets fed up with the mayor of his town and decides to run against him in the upcoming election. the day George Floyd is killed, the community tension gets ratcheted up, leading to paranoia-fueled conspiracy thriller with an explosive and somber final act. this is one of isaac's top films of the year. check it out, we had a great discussion. fyi, we do cuss a couple times (sorry, not sorry). but we're not cussin' with you, we're so glad to have you along for the ride :)

Ian and Jeff visit the not-so-sleepy little town of Eddington for a spoilerific look back at 2020, through the cracked lens of indie genre giant Ari Aster!Joaquin Phoenix stars as sheriff Joe Cross, whose crumbling marriage and personal beef with Eddington's mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) is already enough to put him off kilter. In sweeps the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by BLM protests, and Antifa saboteurs--all of which push him and the town to the brink of absolute insanity. In this no holds barred review, the guys tackle Eddington's lows, highs, and in-betweens--and ask if Aster is all he's cracked up to be as a storyteller. They also draw strange but apt parallels to James Gunn's Superman and recommend some of the sources Aster knowingly or unknowingly cribbed from as alternatives to sitting through two-and-a-half-hours of "juvenhilism" (a word that Ian mistakenly believed he'd coined--but which is actually the title of a book. Released by @A24 Eddington is the 4th film from filmmaker Ari Aster and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Sheriff Joe Cross. Eddington follows a small town in New Mexico in the summer of 2020 as the residents are confronted with COVID, mask mandates, and Black Lives Matter protests, along with a heated mayoral campaign between Conservative candidate Sheriff Joe Cross, and democratic incumbent Ted Garcia. We're both out of town but never far away from you at Breakfast All Day. This week, we begin with a review of Ari Aster's latest, "Eddington," which takes us back to the tumultuous summer of 2020 between the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests. Aster follows up 2023's "Beau Is Afraid" with another nightmarish exploration of our current times, placing Joaquin Phoenix at the center once again. This one was designed to be divisive. In theaters now. Then for something a little sweeter, it was Alonso's turn to pick a movie he loved from childhood for the latest round of our favorite game: Was It Great or Were You 8? This time, he chose the 1976 Disney live-action comedy "No Deposit, No Return," starring Don Knotts, David Niven and a pre-Real Housewives Kim Richards. Christy had never even heard of this movie. Have you seen it? Finally, we did a LIVE spoiler chat about "Superman," now that the movie has been out for a week. We had a great turnout, especially given that it's a summer Friday. Apologies in advance for the audio issues toward the end: We both froze and couldn't hear each other, so we wrapped up quickly. Keep an eye out for our review of "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" early next week. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us! "Eddington" had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival where it received mixed reviews for its story of the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, set during 2020, where a rivalry between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) reaches a combustible state of political and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Director and writer, Ari Aster, the masterful filmmaker behind films such as "Hereditary," "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" is not unfamiliar with this kind of polarizing response to his provocative films and in fact, he welcomes the debate, discussion and reflection in hopes that his work will bring us closer together during a time where we're more divided than ever before. Aster and Academy Award-winning star Joaquin Phoenix were kind enough to speak with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters nationwide from A24. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... 30 years after Mel Gibson's Braveheart cloaked Hollywood in fake tartan, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode take the high roads and the low roads to look for the real Scotland on screen.Ellen talks with Tayside journalist Kayleigh Donaldson about the trouble with Braveheart, why veteran Scottish director Bill Forsyth's hyper local comedy dramas Local Hero, Gregory's Girl, and That Sinking Feeling have such international appeal, and why movies such as Ben Sharrock's Limbo tell a different kind of story about Scotland.Comedian and writer Frankie Boyle tells Ellen why Gregory's Girl is one of Scotland's most beloved films, why Lynne Ramsay's New York City based thriller You Were Never Really Here starring Joaquin Phoenix as a violent mercenary feels so Scottish, and his reservations about Danny Boyle's Trainspotting.Mark reconnects with legendary Scottish actor and star of Succession Brian Cox who has returned to Scotland to make his directorial debut Glenrothan. They discuss Brigadoon, Braveheart (which starred Brian Cox), cultural neglect, and the Powell & Pressburger classic movie set on the Isle of Mull, I Know Where I'm Going.Producer: Freya Hellier A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4
World building occasionally requires some subtle touches....On this episode we are diving head first into the world of 'Eddington' which is in theatres now. From the mind of Ari Aster, 'Eddington' takes us to May of 2020, where a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico. This is such cringe inducing satire that it's almost too soon as we run the gamut of emotions with the denizens of this small town as we get transported back to such a culturally in certain time that we are still navigating today. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with costume designer Anna Terrazas about joining this world, crafting the slightly worn and sundrenched world of this town where we all just began to forget about how to function in a modern society that has changed irrevocably in the wake of the pandemic as well as working with Ari Aster and finding a vision that we just can't look away from. It's Western, it's satire, and it's everything else in-between. Imagine 'Bad Day At Black Rock' desperately needing a Xanax refill.
EDDINGTON MOVIE REVIEW No matter how much some of us may want it, Ari Aster seems to be done with horror for now. He certainly isn't done with horrifying though. EDDINGTON MOVIE REVIEW No matter how much some of us may want it, Ari Aster seems to be done with horror for now. He certainly isn't done with horrifying though. His latest film Eddington reteams him with Joaquin Phoenix, this time playing Joe Cross, the sheriff of the titular small town in New Mexico. When […]

We break down the film's story, its genre-blending style, standout performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Austin Butler (but an underused Emma Stone), and debate whether Aster's ambition outweighs the film's messiness. In this episode of Cinema D'Amore, hosts Justin and Chuck dive deep into the strange, sprawling universe of Beau Is Afraid, the latest mind-bender from Ari Aster (until Eddington's release). Follow Beau Wassermann—played with haunted brilliance by Joaquin Phoenix—on a darkly comic odyssey shaped by anxiety, mother issues, and a world that only gets weirder the farther he travels. This week we're excited to present an archival conversation from the 52nd New York Film Festival in 2014 with Inherent Vice director Paul Thomas Anderson and his very large and talented cast. For one week only from July 4-10, join Film at Lincoln Center in revisiting this great American film on 70mm film, ahead of the director's highly anticipated new feature One Battle After Honor. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/vice This conversation was moderated by Kent Jones, former Director of the New York Film Festival. Paul Thomas Anderson's wild and entrancing Thomas Pynchon adaptation is a cinematic time machine, placing the viewer deep within the world of the paranoid, hazy L.A. dope culture of the early '70s. It's not just the look (which is ineffably right, from the mutton chops and the peasant dresses to the battered screen doors and the neon glow), it's the feel, the rhythm of hanging out, of talking yourself into a state of shivering ecstasy or fear or something in between. Joaquin Phoenix goes all in as Doc Sportello, the private investigator searching for his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston), menaced at every turn by the telegenic police detective “Bigfoot” Bjornsen (Josh Brolin). Among the other members of Anderson's mind-boggling cast are Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Owen Wilson, and Jena Malone.
Send us a textA 15-year-old Elvis Tribute Artist that many feel is Elvis reincarnated but looks like Joaquin Phoenix! He is the only singer in his family. The attraction started in second grade after his best friend dared him to dress up as Elvis for Halloween, which began the love affair for the King of Rock n Roll. Aiden also sings Johnny Cash, Josh Turner and a couple others but Elvis is his niche. He says, Elvis is a friend of his that he never got to meet and since 2nd Grade he has been singing his songs that began with “Jailhouse Rock.” Aiden spends an hour every day practicing Elvis's music. He states he has watch every single video on YouTube that Elvis has watched to perfect his mannerisms and movement and some of these moves come natural to Aiden. He has jumpsuits made specifically for him along with the replica clothes and he completely embraces this vintage look and mentions; he was born in the wrong era!Being part of a big competition in Memphis in the Big “little” King Division, he will be performing in the Graceland tent very soon, but Aiden really wants to be the Ultimate Elvis and has been to Tupelo, MS many times and performed right outside the birthplace of Elvis! What is next? VEGAS? Steve Pennington is his vocal coach for over the past year and half, and one Aiden believes in him in which the results speak for themselves. Pennington is the one to credit for posting his videos and putting the naysayers at bay that believed Aiden was lip synching by posting an A Capella video. How is he handling all the notoriety from his VIRAL videos? He tells us what long term plans are, and he has a plan B too! What does a teenager away from being Elvis? He ends with a beautiful story of the impact he has had on others.
