Marvel's latest Disney+ series Wonder Man features one of their most obscure characters—a struggling actor named Simon Williams who becomes Wonder Man. Matthew hosts Will and Steve from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast to explore episode one and dive into the comic book history of this B-list Avenger who's spent more time on movie sets than saving the world. The conversation examines why the MCU chose this particular character for a show that's more about Hollywood and acting than superheroism. From Wonder Man's 1960s origins with Baron Zemo and ionic rays to his modern role as an Avenger who'd rather be anywhere else, the discussion reveals how this character's comic book history makes him surprisingly perfect for a meta-commentary on genre entertainment.Questions We DiscussedHas the MCU reached a point where it's making satires about making MCU shows? How does Wonder Man compare to other Marvel characters who maintain civilian careers like She-Hulk's legal work? Why did Simon Williams leave the superhero world to pursue acting full-time in the comics?Does having an obscure character give Marvel more creative freedom without fan backlash?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Sanderson: 8:45 Wonderman: 19:00 Dunk & Egg: 35:07 Brandon Sanderson's Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere' Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/brandon-sandersons-mistborn-stormlight-archive-movie-tv-1236487271/ Wonderman (Disney+) Episode 1 – “Matinee” (Premiere) Episode 1 introduces us to Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor and stuntman whose career is in a tailspin. After being fired from a TV role and dumped by his girlfriend, Simon is at a crossroads. When he runs into Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), a fellow actor with an eccentric reputation, he learns Slattery is auditioning for a remake of the classic superhero film Wonder Man — a movie Simon loved as a kid and which inspired him to pursue acting in the first place. Simon pushes for a shot at the role, but his agent refuses. Undeterred, he somehow lands an audition alongside Slattery anyway. Slattery gives him advice that helps him make an impression. Meanwhile, Department of Damage Control agent P. Cleary secretly contacts Slattery with instructions to watch Simon closely because he might have actual superpowers, tying Simon's acting ambitions to real-world MCU stakes. This episode sets up two parallel arcs: Simon's Hollywood hustle and dream of stardom, and the hint that he may be more than just an actor, potentially linking him to actual superhero abilities and the broader Marvel universe. Tone-wise, Episode 1 blends industry satire, comedy, and superhero setup, spotlighting the absurdities of Hollywood while weaving in classic MCU connective tissue. Ratings: Out of 5 Here’s a Note For You… Get Out Darryl: 3.75/5 Brian: 3.8/5 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO Max) Episode 1 – “The Hedge Knight” This premiere introduces Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (the boy who becomes his squire), setting up the tone and stakes for the series. It takes place about 100 years before Game of Thrones and focuses on a smaller-scale story full of character and humor rather than sweeping war and politics. Here's what happens: Dunk buries his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and takes his sword, shield, and three horses as he heads toward the Ashford tourney, hoping to make his name and find work. At an inn, he meets a young bald boy who asks to be his squire. After initially refusing, Dunk ultimately accepts him and names the boy Egg. At Ashford, Dunk tries to enter the tournament but learns he needs someone reputable to vouch for him. He seeks out knights who knew Ser Arlan, but nobody will put their name on the line for a wandering hedge knight. Along the way we see the rough, earthy humor and grounded Westerosi world the show is leaning into (including some decidedly human moments missing from prior franchise entries). By the end, Dunk officially becomes Ser Duncan the Tall, and he and Egg share a moment under the stars, signaling the start of their journey together. Tone note: it's lighter and more character-focused than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, blending heartfelt moments with gritty, grounded humor. Episode 2 – “Hard Salt Beef” In the second episode, Dunk's quest to enter the Ashford tourney continues and the story expands slightly into the world's wider politics and personality. Key beats: Dunk spends much of the episode telling other knights about his mentor Ser Arlan, trying to get someone to vouch for him so he can compete, but keeps getting brushed off. Egg helps by pointing out the unfairness of Dunk needing permission when he's already a knight, showing how their dynamic is evolving. Members of House Targaryen arrive at the tourney — princes including Baelor, Maekar, and Aerion — and their presence adds weight to the event. Dunk overhears a conversation about missing Targaryen children and uses the moment (and a bit of boldness) to appeal directly to Prince Baelor to vouch for him. Baelor does remember Ser Arlan and, while not lavish in praise, quietly ensures Dunk's name is added to the tournament list. Dunk and Egg also start to settle more into the tourney rhythm — from watching performances to joining in games — as Dunk grapples with what legacy and honor really mean in this world. This episode deepens the relationship between Dunk and Egg, introduces more of Westeros's nobility (in a relatively casual, grounded way), and frames Dunk's struggles not just to fight but to matter. Quick Character & World Context Dunk and Egg are adapted from the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin. The series is intentionally smaller in scale, focusing on relationships and the everyday lives of knights and squires rather than epic political wars or dragons. Skywalking Through Neverland: A Star Wars / Disney Fan Podcast

Are you wondering whether Wonder Man is worth your time? In this episode, we break down Marvel's latest Disney+ series, give you the essential background on the character, and explain what you actually need to know before diving in. From Simon Williams' comic book origins to his surprising connections with Vision, Scarlet Witch, and the Avengers, we cover the fun facts, controversies, and powers that shaped Wonder Man long before his MCU debut. We also dig into how Wonder Man fits into the MCU under the Marvel Spotlight banner—designed to be more grounded, character-driven, and accessible without deep MCU homework. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a struggling actor hiding dangerous superpowers, and Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery, the series leans hard into Hollywood satire, mentorship, and the bizarre "Doorman Clause" that bans super-powered people from acting. Our reactions are… mixed. While the show shines as a personal story about ambition, insecurity, and creative survival—anchored by a standout performance from Ben Kingsley—it struggles with tone, realism, and the weight of its MCU identity. We talk about what works, what doesn't, and whether Wonder Man feels like a forgotten experiment or a meaningful setup for something bigger down the road. Watch the YouTube version here for the best experience. Listen to the podcast episode here: Written WONDER MAN Review Wonder Man is the 19th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including both live-action and animated projects) and arrives as part of Phase 6. The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Andrew Guest (Hawkeye, Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, crossing superhero franchises after playing Black Manta in DC's Aquaman films, stars as Simon Williams, a struggling actor auditioning for the lead in a remake of Wonder Man, a low-budget 1980s action film that Simon once bonded over with his father. Simon carries a dangerous secret: he has explosive superpowers that he can't fully control. Worse, he must keep those powers hidden if he wants any chance at an acting career thanks to the Doorman Clause, a rule that bars super-powered individuals from working as actors. One episode dives into the origins of this clause, and it's easily among the series' most entertaining and imaginative chapters. Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor Slattery, the infamous actor hired to portray the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Since then, the character has appeared in the Marvel short All Hail the King and film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Here, Trevor is once again chasing relevance—and is also auditioning for a role in the Wonder Man remake. Interestingly, the series never clearly states where it fits into the MCU timeline. There are only light references—photos on walls, casual mentions of "shield throwing." Frankly, that restraint is welcome. It's firmly set in the present day on the main MCU Earth, and that's more than enough. Had this been set on another timeline or Earth, this review probably wouldn't exist. Character Over Capes At its core, this is a strong, personal story about two people supporting each other in a brutal industry. Simon approaches acting with intense seriousness—reminiscent of Dustin Hoffman's character in Tootsie—while Trevor, as a mentor figure, pushes him to loosen up and trust the words on the page. Wonder Man is far more interested in the relationship between Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery than in building a new costumed icon. Through their conversations, the series thoughtfully explores what it actually means to be an actor. Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley make for an engaging, surprisingly balanced duo. The show wisely avoids leaning into easy odd-couple clichés, which elevates their dynamic. If you enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at show business in The Studio or Hacks, there's a lot here to like. Wonder Man ups the stakes by adding uncontrollable superpowers into an already stressful industry where almost nothing goes your way. Tone & Reality Gaps Tonally, Wonder Man struggles. It can't always decide whether it wants to be serious and emotional or silly and farcical. It oscillates between the two. The dialogue is often grounded and well-written, but the situations frequently feel forced—bent to serve the script rather than emerging naturally from reality. Living in Los Angeles, where the series is set, makes some of these moments especially hard to ignore. Being under a tight deadline to submit an audition tape and deciding to drive from Hollywood to Malibu and back—congratulations, you've just wasted three hours. These issues extend to the on-set scenes. Having worked in the film industry, many of these moments rang false. A day player wouldn't halt production because they have extensive notes. There are numerous story hiccups where disbelief must be suspended simply to keep the plot moving. A test audience likely would have flagged many of these. Performances & Standout Moments Any time Ben Kingsley is on screen, he's impossible not to root for. Simon, by contrast, is difficult to like until the final two episodes. That's clearly intentional—he's closed off and emotionally blocked—but watching someone repeatedly sabotage themselves is frustrating, even if it's thematically justified. One unquestionable highlight is the episode centered on the Doorman Clause, "Doorman". Josh Gad's appearance, along with his reworked version of "In Summer," is delightful and injects much-needed energy and creativity into the series. Release Strategy & Final Verdict Marvel continues to undermine its TV output with its release strategy. Ironheart dropped its six episodes across two days. Echo released all five at once. Wonder Man follows suit with all eight episodes dropping in a single day. The result? These shows are consumed quickly and forgotten just as fast. By the time Daredevil Season 2 arrives in March, this will likely be one of those "Oh yeah… what happened on Wonder Man again?" series.I went in with an open mind and high expectations—this is Marvel, after all. In the end, I liked Wonder Man, but too much got in the way of loving it. SPONSORS Small World Vacations is an official sponsor of Skywalking Through Neverland. Guardians of the Galaxy wasn't just a cosmic side quest — it was the emotional on-ramp to the entire Infinity Saga. In this retrospective episode of Marvel Maniac, we look back at the humble beginnings of Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax, while viewing the film through the lens of everything that comes later — from Infinity War and Endgame to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. From the iconic opening set to “Come and Get Your Love,” to the underplayed introduction of the Power Stone, to the quiet seeds planted for Thanos and the tragedy that follows — this episode is about why Guardians still matters, and why it hits harder now than it ever did in 2014.

Neverland Clubhouse: A Sister's Guide Through Disney Fandom

Marvel Mondays continue as we move through the early MCU with the franchise's second entry.ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE HULKBruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into whenever he loses his temper.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR THE INCREDIBLE HULKJune 13, 2008 | TheatersCAST & CREW OF THE INCREDIBLE HULKEdward Norton as Bruce BannerLiv Tyler as Betty RossTim Roth as Emil BlonskyWilliam Hurt as General “Thunderbolt” RossTim Blake Nelson as Samuel SternsBRAN'S THE INCREDIBLE HULK SYNOPSISThe movie kicks off with a quick montage explaining how Bruce Banner became the Hulk. You know the deal. The military, however, is very interested in finding him because… he's extremely dangerous.Five years later, Bruce is living in Brazil, lying low. He's doing breathing exercises to keep his heart rate down and working at a bottling factory. He's also desperately searching for a cure for his Hulk-ness, secretly chatting online with someone named Mr. Blue. One day at work, Bruce cuts his finger, and a drop of his blood falls into one of the bottles. That bottle eventually makes its way to the U.S., where it causes serious problems for the guy who drinks it. Using this contaminated bottle, the military tracks Banner's location. A strike team led by Emil Blonsky is sent in to capture him.Bruce transforms into the Hulk and completely wrecks Blonsky's team. Blonsky, instead of being terrified, is impressed and immediately wants that power for himself. He agrees to be injected with a small dose of a super-soldier serum connected to the original Hulk experiment. Surely nothing bad will happen.Bruce returns to the States to grab some of his old research and reunites with his former girlfriend, Betty Ross. Blonsky attacks again, and when Betty is put in danger, Bruce transforms into the Hulk. Hulk fights off the military—including Blonsky—and escapes with Betty. Now officially on the run together, Bruce contacts Mr. Blue, who urges them to meet in New York City.Mr. Blue turns out to be Dr. Samuel Sterns, a cellular biologist who claims he's developed a possible antidote. They test it—and it actually works. But Sterns reveals he's also been stockpiling Bruce's blood samples, believing its “limitless potential” could revolutionize medicine now that a cure exists.Bruce immediately points out that this is a terrible idea because the military is absolutely going to weaponize it. (Did we learn nothing from Iron Man?)Right on cue, Blonsky and the military arrive, capture Banner, and take him away. Blonsky stays behind and forces Sterns to inject him with Banner's blood. Sterns warns him that combining the serum with the radiation already in his body could turn him into something far worse—an Abomination.Blonsky hears the name and says, “Cool. Do it.”Blonsky mutates into a massive, rage-filled monster even bigger and stronger than the Hulk and immediately starts destroying Harlem.Bruce realizes he has to stop him. He jumps from a helicopter, transforms mid-fall, and the Hulk takes on Abomination in an extended, brutal battle across the city. Hulk ultimately defeats him by choking him with a massive chain, stopping only when Betty begs him not to kill Blonsky. After a quiet moment with Betty, Hulk flees the scene and disappears. One month later, Bruce is in Bella Coola, British Columbia. Instead of trying to suppress the Hulk, he's learning to transform on purpose. As his eyes turn green, Bruce smiles. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.   Enjoy Sidekicks!  This episode is all about sidekicks; the characters who stand beside the hero, hold them together, and often save the day while someone else gets the credit. Jay and Shua explore where the idea of the sidekick came from, how it evolved through mythology, comics, TV, movies, and games, and why these characters resonate even more as audiences grow older.   Who are secretly the real heroes? Who's clearly smarter than the lead? Who's just there to keep the main character from completely losing it. It's a celebration of backup characters who deserve top billing… or at least a bigger slice of the spotlight.    What sidekicks do you think deserve more credit? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "Tune in next week!" will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know.
