An excerpt of a presentation given to the Advanced Cinematography Class at the University of Connecticut. Death to Certainty, Long Live the Dream.
The pursuit of growth, the centering on self and family first, the desire to learn from people ahead of you and the people coming up behind you, a deep desire to share knowledge, and the need to make the best thing you can, regardless of the resources. Those all exist at all levels, whether you've got an Oscar or not. Thankful for Greig. The world needs more people like him.

IT'S TAX SEASON! This was a pain in my butt forever. I wanted to talk to someone about it. I can say I finally don't stress about any of this, and that is 100% thanks to professional help. This isn't an ad. I promise. I mean I guess it sorta is. I do love Core. Christian is great. They changed my life. If you want help, book a free discovery call - zero risk: https://forms.coregroupus.com/evanbourcier-3768 Tell them I sent you - they'll hook you up ;)
IYKYK. I apologize for anything dorky I said in the past - I was trying my best.
This isn't exactly filmmaking, but it feels important to me, maybe it's important to you. I'd love your thoughts on this one, and if this topic is interesting to people I can dig into it a bit more.
When I first met Jon Bregel, he was on a trajectory straight out of this atmosphere. Phantom Cameras, Russian Arms, Massive Clients, and world travel. He founded a company called Variable, and they were 100% the cool kids on the block. I always envied them, and admired them. Every member of Variable I ran into was talented and kind, so I was shocked when shortly after I met them, Variable shut down their business. It was a mystery that chewed me up for years, and I finally decided to ask Jon about it. This is that conversation. If this conversation resonates with you please consider checking out the all-new Variable. We didn't get into it as much as I'd like, but Jon is building an incredible community for filmmakers focused on wellness. Jon wants you to know that they are only opening slots on monthly basis to make sure the community stays quality, but you can sign up for the waitlist on the website to be notified when new slots are available: https://wearevariable.com/ Follow Jon on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jbregel/ Jon has always been an inspiration to me and getting to share his time and a piece of his story was very special. This redemptive arc for the entity known as Variable is incredible, and I can't wait to see where it goes. There's a lot to this one... I hope you like it. Keep the secret
At the end of this I tell you which camera I would own if I could only own one. True story. Listen or don't, whatever you do, don't tell anyone. This is between you and me and only real filmmakers are allowed.
Show up. The secret is show up. Keep the secret - Don't tell anyone.
The redacted part is Cody Fry. That is a secret. Please don't tell anyone. Lots of thoughts on lots of things - crew sizes, interview intent, the value of knowing your subject, clarity, and more.
In this episode of the podcast, Chris and Evan talk through their experiences with good and bad prep, and the difference it can make in your work. A recurring theme of this season seems to be that pre-pro is the defining factor of most good work, or the lack of it is the defining feature of bad work. The simplest and cheapest way to make better videos is getting better at your pre-pro/prep. We're back with the second part of our interview with Dan and Dana from Gnarly Bay. Dan and Dana have been making films together since high school. Their desire to produce meaningful work has taken them around the world, and grown their team into what is now known as "Gnarly Bay".
