"Happy Birthday, Peter Hook" There's nothing about Peter Hook that I can tell you you don't already know, so let's just do a refresher run through his musical CV. In the late '70s Hook formed Joy Division with childhood pal Bernard Sumner after the two friends saw the Sex Pistols play in Manchester. The band only put out two albums and one of those albums, the legendary Closer was put out two months after the band had ceased to b,e due to the suicide of singer Ian Curtis on the eve of Joy Division's debut US/Canada tour. Rechristened New Order and consisting of the remaining members of Joy Division plus keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, New Order blended jittery post-punk rhythms with dance music. The result? Well, you know the result. They were one of the biggest bands of the '80s, spawning hits like True Faith, The Perfect Kiss, Subculture and Blue Monday, which was the biggest selling 12-inch of all time. It might still be. New Order dominated the '80s, but the '90s weren't too shabby—they had a #1 UK hit with World In Motion in 1990 and they had their biggest US hit with “Regret” in 1993. They kept crushing it, putting out Get Ready in 2001 and collaborating with Billy Corgan and Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream. They were given the Godlike Genius award at the 2005 NME awards and got nominated for a Grammy in 2006 for Guilt Is a Useless Emotion. Then things got a bit sour, with Hook leaving the band in 2007 and forming his own outfit Peter Hook and the Light, a band that featured his son Jack and much to his fans delight, revisited the Joy Division and New Order songbooks. Over the course of his career Hook has worked with The Stone Roses, and Perry Farrell, he toured with the Durutti Column, put out albums with Revenge and Monaco and wrote one of the best music books ever: Substance; Inside New Order. This is a partial list, btw. Almost a partial partial list because when it comes to Peter Hook, there's a lot of ground to cover. But these are the basics. Do a deeper dive after you hear the show—the guy is a titan. As for his split with New Order and his boyhood pal Bernard, we don't have time to go over the legal end of that dissolution, so let's just say this. If you're hoping for a reunion you're wasting your good hope energy. Not going to happen. As a bassist, he plays with an authoritative blend of prowl and sting and not only is he one of the all time greats, he also happens to be a nice guy. Nhiều nơi, hoạt động khai thác bờ biển định hình cảnh quan, quy hoạch của toàn vùng. Để hiểu hơn về quy hoạch vùng biển phục vụ hoạt động nghỉ dưỡng tại châu Âu, RFI tiếng Việt có cuộc trao đổi với kiến trúc sư quy hoạch Bùi Uyên, cũng là cộng tác viên của đài. RFI : Hoạt động nghỉ dưỡng ở bãi biển có từ khi nào ? KTS Bùi Uyên : Ngày nay, phần lớn du khách ưa thích ngâm mình trong làn nước ấm áp của những bãi biển ngập nắng miền Nam bên bờ Địa Trung Hải, hơn là dọc những vùng duyên hải lộng gió eo biển Manche. Nhưng chính nước Anh mới là nơi ra đời hoạt động nghỉ dưỡng bãi biển. Xuất phát điểm là những khu nghỉ dưỡng nước khoáng nóng, trị liệu, được xây dựng từ đầu thế kỷ 18, dần dần hình thành những thành phố nghỉ dưỡng bên bờ biển thu hút khách du lịch, đánh dấu bước ngoặt lớn trong tương tác với tài nguyên biển. Thời điểm đó, nước biển được sánh ngang nước khoáng trong vai trò trị liệu. Tắm biển, trước hết, là một liệu pháp chăm sóc sức khỏe. Để phục vụ hoạt động nghỉ dưỡng, chữa bệnh này, những đường dạo ven biển và những khu đô thị dần dần mọc lên. Nhờ có trao đổi qua lại giữa hai bờ eo biển Manche mà xu hướng này lan dần sang những vùng ven biển Normandie của Pháp. Những thành phố du lịch nghỉ dưỡng đầu tiên phải kể đến Dauville, Trouville, Cabourg, đặc biệt nở rộ nhờ có phát triển ngành đường sắt vào giữa thế kỷ 18 khiến việc tiếp cận các khu nghỉ ven biển dễ dàng hơn đáng kể. Ban đầu, những khu đô thị mới này dành cho tầng lớp thượng lưu, tách biệt khỏi những khu làng chài cổ vốn quay lưng ra biển, chỉ khai thác nghề đánh bắt hải sản. RFI : Đô thị du lịch biển phải chăng là tác nhân làm thay đổi sâu sắc cảnh quan các vùng duyên hải ? KTS Bùi Uyên : Đúng, quy hoạch khai thác bờ biển như một điểm đến du lịch, với mô hình những khu phức hợp nghỉ dưỡng, dịch vụ giải trí, từ sức khỏe đến sòng bạc, đã được ra đời như một loại hình đầu tư tư nhân thu lợi nhuận cao. Dần dần, bờ biển trở thành một bộ phận của quy hoạch đô thị và chính sách công về phát triển du lịch biển và kinh tế địa phương.  Ban đầu, ngay khi được khai thác du lịch, cảnh quan biển tự nhiên phần cốt yếu vẫn là để chiêm ngưỡng, đi dạo thư giãn hơn là nơi để bơi lội. Trên tầm thế giới, khái niệm nghỉ mát mùa hè trên những bãi biển chỉ ra đời vào đầu thế kỷ 20. Phải kể đến khái niệm 3S « Sun - Sand – Sea » ra đời trên quần đảo Hawaii rồi lan sang dải bờ biển bang Floride của Mỹ. Với trào lưu này, những vùng biển ấm nóng trở thành nơi để thư giãn, giải phóng cơ thể, hòa mình trong nắng, cát và nước biển. Tại châu Âu, loại hình tắm biển này bắt đầu xuất hiện bên bờ Địa Trung Hải vào những năm 30 của thế kỷ trước. Đầu tiên phải kể đến bờ biển nghỉ mát vùng Côte d'Azur, miền nam Pháp. Theo năm tháng, danh tiếng của khu bờ biển này ngày càng thu hút tầng lớp khá giả, giới thượng lưu, văn nghệ sỹ, không những trong nước mà cả ở tầm thế giới. Để kéo dài hoạt động giải trí mang lợi ích kinh tế chủ chốt, các thành phố ven biển dần đa dạng hóa các hoạt động sang các mùa khác trong năm. Như các thành phố Nice, Cannes của Pháp mở đón những sự kiện văn hóa nghệ thuật quốc tế, mà nổi bật nhất là Liên hoan phim Cannes tháng 5 hàng năm, khai mạc lần đầu tiên năm 1946. Những khu nhà ở theo mùa hoặc dài hạn cả năm cũng được xây dựng khắp nơi, mời gọi những người có khả năng tài chính sở hữu những căn hộ, biệt thự nghỉ mát mùa hè. RFI : Pháp tìm sự cân bằng giữa lợi ích kinh tế và bảo vệ môi trường biển tự nhiên như thế nào ? KTS Bùi Uyên : Trong suốt các thập niên nửa cuối thế kỷ 20, khắp dọc các bờ biển, hàng loạt các khu tổ hợp giải trí, khách sạn, từ sang trọng cho đến bình dân mọc lên, biến một vùng biển thành điểm đến nghỉ mát mới. TIếp nối Côte d'Azur, khu vực phía tây nam cũng mọc lên những thành phố nghỉ mát nổi tiếng, kéo dài từ Perpignan qua Narbonne, đến Montpellier. Không chỉ khai thác thế mạnh hơn 1600 km đường bờ biển Địa Trung Hải, các dải bờ Đại Tây Dương cũng không ngừng thu hút du khách lũ lượt đổ về bốn mùa trong năm.  Nhận thấy nguy cơ từ tốc độ phát triển đô thị biển ồ ạt này, một bộ luật chuyên về các vùng lãnh thổ ven biển được ra đời năm 1985. Bộ luật này được soạn thảo với mục đích quản lý quy hoạch, bảo vệ và gìn giữ giá trị các vùng tiếp giáp biển này. Chính nhờ có chính sách quản lý từ sớm, nên tuy là một quốc gia có nhiều lợi thế về đường bờ biển, Pháp vẫn song song vừa khai thác du lịch, nhưng vẫn giữ lại được phần lớn đường bờ biển tự nhiên đa dạng về cảnh quan, cũng như sinh quyển. Những ngôi làng cổ như Eze cheo leo trên mỏm núi đá chiếm trọn tầm nhìn xuống bờ biển, ngay sát những đô thị du lịch sầm uất từ Monaco đến Cannes. Hay một làng Saint-Tropez sang chảnh bậc nhất vẫn giữ nét xưa, không xa bãi tắm Lavandou thanh bình với hàng kilometre bờ biển tự nhiên cát mịn. Còn nếu mê ngắm nhìn những đàn hồng hạc thì không thể bỏ qua khu đầm sinh quyển Carmague rộng gần 200 ngàn hecta ngay bên bờ biển, nằm giữa trục đường nối những bến cảng biển Marseille nhộn nhịp với thành phố Montpellier ngập nắng. Khách du lịch có thể tự do nằm dài phơi nắng trên những ghế ngả thư giãn, hay chọn những chuyến dạo bộ hàng giờ dọc theo đường dạo tự nhiên vắt qua những khu bảo tồn thiên nhiên hay di tích cổ. Dù nghỉ ngơi theo cách nào, thì du khách cũng có thể dừng chân bơi lội bất kỳ đâu,dù bãi biển đông đúc bên những nhà hàng sang trọng hay vắng vẻ nơi vách núi hoang sơ. RFI : Còn tại Tây Ban Nha, chính quyền quy hoạch bờ biển thành không gian công cộng trụ cột của đô thị du lịch tại Tây Ban Nha. Chị có thể giải thích thêm ? KTS Bùi Uyên : Với chính sách coi đường bờ biển trước hết là không gian công cộng, nước láng giềng Tây Ban Nha của Pháp cũng sớm có bộ luật vùng duyên hải từ năm 1969. Với hơn 2000km riêng phần đường bờ biển Địa Trung Hải và gần như nắng ấm quanh năm, Tây Ban Nha xây dựng hình mẫu phân tầng không gian và thiết kế cảnh quan công cộng bờ biển một cách bài bản. Theo hình mẫu này, một dải không gian trống, rộng lớn dao động từ 50-100m chiều ngang được quy hoạch men theo hàng kilometre đường bờ biển. Ở đó, đường xe cơ giới tiếp cận những bãi đỗ xe nổi hoặc ngầm, với vỉa hè thoáng đãng rợp bóng cây. Cuối cùng là tầng không gian bờ nước, một đường đi bộ rộng viền theo những bãi cát, dành cho hoạt động tắm biển và thể thao trên cát có thể rộng 100-200m. Trên dọc đường biển Địa Trung Hải thuộc Tây Ban Nha, dễ dàng gặp cấu trúc cảnh quan này ở các thành phố nghỉ mát lớn nhỏ. Với phân bố không gian công cộng trung tâm theo tuyến, lấy bờ biển là trung tâm, các thành phố ven biển ở đây định hình cấu trúc hoàn toàn khác biệt với những đô thị sâu trong đất liền xây dựng bao bọc quanh lõi trung tâm là khu phố, nhà thờ cổ. RFI : Tình hình tại Ý, một quốc gia cũng nổi tiếng với du lịch biển, thì sao ? Có gì khác với Pháp và Tây Tây Nha ? Dường như đó là một « cuộc chiến » giữa tư hữu hóa giàu lợi nhuận với đòi hỏi quyền tiếp cận cho toàn dân ? KTS Bùi Uyên : Trái ngược với Pháp và Tây Ban Nha sớm luật hóa việc quản lý đường bờ biển, nước láng giềng Ý, cũng sở hữu thế mạnh du lịch biển nức tiếng thế giới, lại có phần nới lỏng hơn. Với hơn 7600km đường bờ biển, nước Ý lại không có khung luật về quản lý khai thác du lịch ven biển. Đó có lẽ là lý do mà khoảng 50% các bãi biển nằm dưới sự quản lý của các công ty tư nhân. Thường là những bãi biển đẹp nhất và dễ tiếp cận nhất, trong các vùng du lịch nổi tiếng. (3) Nhiều vùng, tỉ lệ bãi biển tư nhân lên tới 70-90%. Trong khi đó, các bãi biển công cộng miễn phí (spiaggia libera) thường bị thu hẹp, ít được bảo trì, nên thường quá tải, nhiều chỗ không đảm bảo vệ sinh. Trên các bãi biển do tư nhân vận hành, các dịch vụ chính là cung cấp ghế nằm, dù che nắng, nhà hàng … Các bãi biển này mang lại trải nghiệm sạch sẽ, tiện nghi hơn nhưng có thu phí sử dụng trung bình 15e/ ngày/ người. Loại hình dịch vụ này không những mang lại một nguồn thu ngân sách lớn hàng tỷ euro mỗi năm, đóng góp vào tỉ lệ 10.8% PIB từ du lịch, lại giảm tải chi phí nhà nước cho bảo trì các bãi biển và tạo hàng ngàn việc làm trong ngành dịch vụ này. Một đặc thù ở đây là hợp đồng cấp phép được gia hạn lại và truyền từ đời này qua đời khác trong các tập đoàn gia đình, mà không cần qua đấu thầu lại. Mô hình này gây tranh cãi do thiếu minh bạch, đây cũng là yêu cầu cải cách của Uỷ Ban Châu Âu với chính phủ Ý từ nhiều năm nay. Chỉ đến cuối năm 2024, chính quyền của thủ tưởng Meloni cuối cùng mới chấp nhận áp dụng việc mở đấu thầu tự do các hợp đồng quản lý bãi biển. Các chủ quán lý hiện thời sễ tiếp tục đến cuối 2027, sau đó sẽ phải đấu thầu lại. Việc để tư nhân quản lý bãi biển dẫn đến một bất cập khác là quyền tiếp cận biển tự do bị hạn chế. Tuy theo quy định tại đây, các bãi biển quản lý tư nhân phải dành 20-30% diện tích cho người dân được sử dụng miễn phí, nhưng nhiều nơi, khu vực này bị quây rào thành từng ô nhỏ, giữa bốn bề là những khu vực bãi cát thu phí.  « Ra biển là để được cảm thấy dễ chịu. Khi tôi ở trên bãi biển, tôi muốn tận hưởng đường chân trời 180° chứ không phải bị nhốt trong một cái chuồng gà », Stefano Salvetti - một nhà hoạt động vì những bãi biển công cộng phát biểu. Trong cuộc phỏng vấn trên bờ biển Gêne, Davide Loreda, một người dân vùng Gêne, 39 tuổi, phát biểu « tôi không nói rằng phải xóa bỏ hết các bãi biển tư nhân, nhưng phải để (người dân) có sự lựa chọn. Bạn hãy tưởng tượng sổng ở bên bờ biển mà không thể tiếp cận nó ? Thật là kinh khủng ».  Còn Mario Mascia cũng đồng tình : « Ttiếp cận biển không thể chỉ giới hạn cho ai có điều kiện. Nhất là ngày nay với khủng hoảng mà chúng ta đang trải qua, các gia đình có ngân sách ngày càng hạn hẹp hơn » (3). Do đó, cuộc đấu tranh đòi tăng số bãi biển công cộng kéo dài hàng thập kỷ, nhờ những tổ chức hội nhóm của dân địa phương đã bền bỉ đấu tranh pháp lý và vận động chính sách. Một hậu quả của việc thiếu quản lý nhà nước là nạn beton hóa bãi biển : mỗi năm, nước Ý mất đi 5km đường bờ biển tự nhiên (4). Với những lập luận này, nhóm vận động Conamal đấu tranh vì quyền tiếp cận biển công cộng và miễn phí của người dân, yêu cầu chính phủ Ý quy định tối thiểu 50% các bãi biển miễn phí tại tất các các tỉnh ven biển. Hội phi lợi nhuận này cũng đấu tranh để được tham gia đấu thầu dành quyền mở lại những bãi biển công cộng miễn phí. RFI : Trước thách thức về biển đổi khí hậu, chính quyền Pháp hướng đến những thay đổi gì trong quản lý để khai thác bền vững đường bờ biển ? KTS Bùi Uyên : Trở lại Pháp, đứng trước tính cấp bách về bảo vệ môi trường và nguy cơ biến đổi khí hậu, luật bảo vệ đường bờ biển vẫn tiếp tục được đổi mới, cập nhật theo hướng tăng cường bảo vệ chống xói mòn, giảm thiểu nguy cơ do nước biển dâng, hạ chế xả rác thải … Tiêu biểu như bộ luật sửa đổi năm 2021 quy định quy hoạch địa phương phải đưa ra phạm vi vành đai sinh thái để « chặn đô thị hóa ». Hay như quy định không cấp phép xây dựng trong dải 100m từ mức mép nước cao nhất, một mặt bảo vệ môi trường tự nhiên bờ biển, mặt khác bảo vệ an toàn cho người dân, trước những nguy cơ sụt lở do xói mòn bờ biển hay nước biển dâng. Xa hơn nữa, tại nhiều điểm đến du lịch biển tiếng tăm, nhiều biện pháp để hạn chế bớt khách du lịch dần được áp dụng. Mới đây, hội nghị thượng đỉnh thế giới về đại dương diễn ra tại Nice vào tháng 06/2025 đánh dấu một bước quan trọng đưa vấn đề bảo vệ sinh quyển các đại dương vào chính sách các quốc gia có đường bờ biển. Uỷ ban châu Âu cũng đề ra nhiều khung pháp lý và các chương trình hợp tác lãnh thổ, các quỹ tài chính để bảo vệ bờ biển, như « Chính sách Hàng hải tích hợp », nhằm mục đích điều phối các hoạt động liên quan đến đại dương, biển và bờ biển châu Âu. Dù được quản lý và khai thác dưới hình thức công hay tư, quy mô địa phương hay toàn vùng biển, thì đòi hỏi bảo vệ môi trường biển ngày càng cấp thiết. Không chỉ với những mục tiêu vĩ mô về môi trường và hệ sinh thái toàn cầu, mà ở mức độ vi mô, giữ gìn một đường bờ biển sạch, giữ nét đẹp tự nhiên cũng là đảm bảo sự bền vững cho nền kinh tế du lịch của mỗi địa phương, mỗi quốc gia. Để những bờ biển Địa Trung Hải châu Âu sẽ mãi giữ sức hấp dẫn không mai một.

Olivier Panis, originally from Oullins, Lyon, is a former French Formula One driver. Early in his career, Panis began with karting, progressing through several junior series before moving up to the French Formula 3 series. By 1990, he secured 4th place in the championship and achieved runner-up status the following year. After karting, Panis competed in two seasons of F3000. His initial season involved challenges with the Apamotox team's stubborn Lola car, while the second season saw him racing for the highly viewed DAMS Equipe team. His perseverance paid off when he was crowned champion, setting the stage for his entry into Formula 1 with Ligier. At 27, Panis joined the French-based Ligier F1 team in 1994. He secured a surprise second-place finish at Hockenheim that season, ending the season 11th overall in the Drivers' Championship. He continued to impress, securing another unexpected second place at the 1995 Australian Grand Prix, despite trailing two laps behind the leader, and finished 8th in the championship. Panis's most astonishing triumph came at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix, where he drove his way to victory in treacherously wet conditions. It marked Ligier's first win in 15 years—their last—and was the first French victory in a French car at Monaco in 66 years. However, apart from this win, Panis failed to finish higher than fifth for the remainder of the season. In 1997, racing for Prost, who had bought Ligier, Panis showed promise, placing third in the championship standings after six races. Unfortunately, a crash in Canada broke his leg, sidelining him for eight races. He returned for the season's last three races and finished ninth in the championship. The 1998 season was less successful for Panis, who struggled to score points under Prost's management. He earned only a single point across the following season, leading to the end of his relationship with the team. Panis then considered an offer from Williams but opted to test for McLaren instead, which kept his presence in the paddock despite a full-time drive. He joined BAR in 2001, although the team didn't meet his expectations, finishing 14th for two consecutive seasons. In 2003, Panis moved to the new Toyota team to provide his experience and mentor his teammate, Cristiano da Matta. Although he improved in qualifying, his overall results mirrored his previous seasons, finishing 14th once again. Panis continued with Toyota through 2004, his tenth year in Formula One. He announced his retirement in October of that year, effective after the 2004 Japanese Grand Prix. He stayed with Toyota as a test driver through 2005 and 2006, ending his F1 career at age 37, with five podiums and 76 career points from 157 starts. SEBRING, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2026) – Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Pistons & Props Presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network kicks-off the 2026 HSR racing season next weekend at Sebring International Raceway, Feb. 13-15. The must-attend event once again celebrates Sebring's rich sports car racing heritage and notable aviation history with four days of on-track action and an airplane "fly-in" of retro civilian and military aircraft from the World War II era and last half century. HSR Pistons & Props Presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network honors the legendary Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring sports car race, which runs for the 74th time March 21, and Sebring International Raceway's patriotic aviation history. Hendricks Field, on which Sebring International Raceway stands, was built as a United States Army Air Forces training base during World War II. One plane scheduled to appear is a Beechcraft T-34 Mentor owned and piloted by Bob Hahnemann, who could be the first HSR Pistons & Props participant to take part in both the winged and four-wheel activity. An accomplished pilot and sports car racing competitor, Hahnemann is listed as a co-driver with his son, Matt Hahnemann, in Friday afternoon's B.R.M Chronographes Legacy Enduro in their 2007 No. 111 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car. Just after the race, Bob will taxi from the adjacent Sebring Regional Airport down the raceway's Ulmann Straight (backstretch) in the T-34, joining a quality lineup of other must-see airplanes and accomplished pilots in a parade to the paddock. Positioned inside the Sebring paddock, the planes will be on display and available for viewing from Friday at 4:30 p.m. through late morning on Sunday. The Beechcraft T-34 Mentor was a post-World War II trainer that was a learning workhorse for thousands of cadets for more than 25 years.  It was used in the Air Force until the 1960s and a go-to in the Navy well into the 1970s. The senior Hahnemann and his partner, Len Tucker, purchased the plane four years ago from legendary NASA astronaut and United States Air Force Colonel Frank Borman, Commander of Apollo 8.  Apollo 8 was the first mission to fly around the Moon. Also a test pilot – and former President of Eastern Airlines – Borman put his own high-performance enhancements on the T-34, installing a Continental IO-550, which was the largest engine you could put in a Mentor. The twin "SU" lettering as the plane's nickname – SU SU IX – also continued Borman's tradition of using the first letters of his wife Susan's name on his aircraft. On the HSR competition side, a highlight of the overall entry list is a nice turnout of entries in the HSR Sasco Vintage Cup for Groups 2 and 3. Home to small-bore racing machines that deliver big-time competition, Sasco Vintage Cup features many unique and eclectic race cars. One particularly rare entry is the Olthoff Racing 1960 No. 26 GSM Dart driven by Englishman John Spiers.  The GSM was built in South Africa by Glass Sport Motor company.  The company, which manufactured the Dart from 1959 until 1962, got its name – Glass Sport – given its use of fiberglass.  The lightweight production sports cars were generally used for racing. The No. 26 has been modified to feature a full flip-top front end and left-hand drive. Power comes from a Ford 1600 Kent engine – produced in Kent, England – with twin side-draft carburetors. Spiers will battle with a top trio of British-built Ginettas, including frequent HSR race winner and podium finishers Hervey Parke in his 1965 No. 11 Ginetta G4 prepared by Michael's Vintage Racing. Michael Oritt drives a similar 1961 No. 82 Ginetta G4 while Thomas Grudovich completes the quick Ginetta contingent in his 1966 No. 425 Ginetta G4. Another favorite small-bore British contender could be the comeback story of the weekend. Accomplished HSR driver Kenneth Greenberg was uninjured in a heavy Turn 1 accident in December's season-ending HSR event at Sebring, but his Air Power Racing 1964 No. 324 Morgan Plus 4 was nearly a total write off. Weston Farmer and the team at Air Power quickly went to work non-stop, and Greenberg and the Morgan are entered in the Vintage Cup sprints and B.R.M Legacy Enduro. Farmer reports many hours are still ahead before traveling to Sebring next week from the team shop in St. Augustine, Fla. after the Morgan's frame was destroyed and even the engine block was cracked in the incident. The team bought a similar 1967 Morgan chassis as a donor car, and the roll cage was completed last week. Oil lines, fuel lines and electrical systems are going in this week and a rebuilt engine recently arrived. John Watson's Formula 1 debut at 1973 British Grand Prix Watson's first F1 car was a March-Cosworth 721 which he drove on the non-championship Victory Race at Brands Hatch. A year after, he was ready to move up to F1, making his debut in the British GP where he drove a Brabham BT37, and after that competed in the US Grand Prix with Brabham BT42. He retired in both races. In 1974, he drove for Goldie Hexagon Racing team with a Brabham BT42 and BT44, scoring his first world championship point with a sixth place at Monaco. He scored a total of six points that season. He failed to score points in the following year when he drove for Team Surtees before switching to the American Penske squad. First Formula 1 victory with Penske at Austrian Grand Prix He secured his first podium with the third place at the 1976 French Grand Prix. Later that season came his first victory, driving for Penske in the Austrian Grand Prix. After the race, he shaved off his beard, the result of a bet with the team owner Roger Penske. In 1977 and 1978, Watson raced with Brabham-Alfa Romeo machinery, in the first year for Martini Racing and in the second for Parmalat Racing Team. In 1977, problems with the car, accidents and a disqualification resulted with Watson racing the full distance in only five of the 17 races. In 1978, he reached three podiums and notched up 25 points to earn sixth place in the championship. In McLaren Team since 1979 For the season of 1979, Watson moved to Marlboro McLaren Team. The next two seasons were without any victories, and finally in 1981, at British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Watson secured his second F1 win. It was a maiden victory for the trend-setting carbon fibre composite monocoque McLaren MP4 car, designed by John Barnard, and managed by the team's new boss, Ron Dennis. New monococque saved his life. Later in the season, the strength of the carbon fibre monocoque was demonstrated when John had a fiery crash at Monza during the Italian Grand Prix. He started seventh on the grid and raced for 19 laps. Watson lost control of the car, coming out of the high speed Lesmo bends and crashed backwards into the barriers. The car was halved but Watson walked away unhurt. Similar accidents had previously proven fatal, but Watson was uninjured, and that lucky break proved the strength of the new carbon fiber construction. Third place in the 1982 F1 championship His most successful year was 1982, when he finished third in the drivers' championship, winning two Grands Prix (Zolder and Detroit). Most impressive was his victory at the first ever Detroit Grand, on a tight and twisty track that was difficult to pass through. Watson worked his way from the 17th starting position on the grid and charged through the field scoring a victory. Master-class victory at Long Beach Watson made a similar master-class victory the following year at the final Formula One race in Long Beach (USA). On the street circuit, he started from 22nd on the grid and succeeded to win the race. Watson's final victory also included a fight for the position with his teammate Niki Lauda, who had started the race at the 23rd spot, but Watson ultimately finished 27 seconds ahead of his famous teammate.
