Trash Queen Directors Emily Tullock and Gabrielle Rosson Indie horror filmmakers Gabby Rosson and Emily Tullock are creating Trash Queen, a sci-fi horror comedy, starring Tullock and legendary scream queen Lynn Lowery. They joined the Scariest Things to talk about what goes into developing a self-funded independent horror film. It is the journey of many an ambitious creator, and we talked about all of the joys and difficulties of crafting a horror movie. If you have ever wanted to produce a movie yourself, this may be an instructive conversation, so join us as we take a trip to the dump, for all the right reasons. Part of the Scariest Things’ mission is to provide an opportunity for independent horror filmmakers to reach audiences. Whether they are established short-film creators or launching their first feature film, independent filmmakers can struggle to build a fan base. Film festivals do a great job of this. But what about securing the resources to get the film made so it can screen at festivals? It’s a chicken-and-egg problem. You have to start somewhere. Creators Gabrielle Rosson and Emily Tullock found our Site through a recommendation from fellow filmmaker Luke Zwanziger, who participated in The Scariest Thing’s Overlook Short Film Roundtable in 2025. It’s all about building a horror community. A small horror press outfit needs to contact independent filmmakers. Movie folks need to get the word out about their movies. It’s like peanut butter and jelly. Gabrielle sent us a message, and the movie concept intrigued us. So, we arranged an interview. We had a chance to discuss their concept, their relationship to horror, and their creative process. Here is the elevator pitch for Trash Queen: Trash Queen is a blood-soaked, female-driven horror-comedy about what happens when a woman who's spent her entire life being overlooked…finally becomes impossible to ignore. After a bite from a trash-dwelling alien cannibal leaves her craving human flesh, Sophia, a painfully underestimated office worker, spirals into a grotesque, hilarious transformation. When her washed-up musician boyfriend, Jack, is also infected and trapped in the Town Dump, she's forced to chase after him and face off against the Trash King. To survive, Sophia must stop trying to fit in and fully become something else. Something powerful. Something terrifying. The Trash Queen. Both women have been in the film industry for about ten years. Rosson has several short films in her directing portfolio, and Tullock is a comedienne with several acting performances and a pair of directing credits to her name. This will be their first feature film direction for both of them. The two of them have finished their script, and, with a fair bit of chutzpah and moxie, they have assembled a cast. Emily Tullock plays Sophia, the film’s lead protagonist. Lynn Lowry (Shivers, The Crazies) plays Marcy, an off the grid resident of the woods. Kevin Keppy (Smile, Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities) plays Gordo, a monstrous figure. In Episode 205 of the Equipping ELLs podcast, host Beth Vaucher dives deep into one of the most foundational topics in ELL education — the five stages of language acquisition — and breaks them down in the most practical, classroom-ready way possible. This is not a repeat of what you heard in your credential program. This is a real-classroom guide to what each stage looks and sounds like on a Tuesday afternoon, what students need at each stage, and — just as importantly — what teachers should stop doing that is quietly slowing language growth.Beth begins the episode by addressing why knowing the stage names is not enough. Most ELL teachers can name the stages, but truly understanding what they look like in a real classroom is a completely different skill. When teachers do not have a clear picture of each stage, they misread their students, plan for the wrong things, and struggle to advocate confidently when homeroom teachers or admin question why a student is not producing grade-level work.The episode opens with Stage 1 Pre-Production — the silent period — and immediately reframes silence as a stage to honor rather than a problem to fix. Beth explains that a student in pre-production is taking in enormous amounts of language even without producing a single word, and that the most damaging thing a teacher can do at this stage is call on the student in front of the class. She also introduces a critical and often overlooked point: the rate of speech. As native speakers, teachers naturally speak faster than they realize, and for a student whose entire day is spent listening, a slower rate of speech directly increases vocabulary growth and listening comprehension.Stage 2 Early Production captures the joy of the first output — single words, familiar phrases, yes and no responses — and Beth shares the delight she personally feels watching newcomer students take those first steps. She emphasizes the role of sentence frames, predictable questions, and low-stakes speaking opportunities in supporting this stage, and cautions against correcting every error or demanding extended responses.Stage 3 Speech Emergence is where Beth identifies the most common teaching mistake: pulling scaffolding too soon. Because students at this stage are speaking more confidently and vocabulary is growing rapidly, it can appear that support is no longer needed. But social language and academic language develop on completely different timelines, and writing — the last language domain to develop — is just beginning to emerge. Beth explains that what these students need is not less support but different support: extended sentence frames that push complexity, academic language scaffolding, and structured writing supports like graphic organizers and mentor texts.Stage 4 Intermediate Fluency addresses the students who look almost fluent — and often exit ELL services around this level in many states. Beth makes a direct case for why homeroom teachers need to understand this stage: these students are still making significant errors, still developing academic language, and still building the deep proficiency needed for complex academic tasks. As a transfer student my senior year I was doing 3-4 animation classes on top of my Thesis. So time management was super hard when you have to do over hundreds of frames for different projects. I've been in love with horror films since I was far too young to be in love with them (namely A Nightmare on Elm Street, I got in young enough to consider Freddy's Dead a highlight of the series.) Our DoP/Cinematographer/Technical Boy Ash Betton is also in a pretty successful band and was called away to the other end of the country after the session musician his band was using dropped out. Turmoil – Chapter One, 6min., Lebanon Directed by Sary Andre El Asmar A young woman lives between two worlds: Europe, where she's built a life, and Lebanon, the home she can't stop longing for. Torn between memory and desire, she drifts back and forth, riding the emotional rollercoaster of exile, identity, and belonging. Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? What motivated me to make this film was the complex feeling of belonging and displacement that many Lebanese expats carry. I started filming randomly with no clear plan.When my friend, who lives in Germany, came back to Lebanon we spent many days together, and after that i began to sense the constant push and pull, the urge to return to her home but at the same time the desire to leave again. For me home is where your roots are, but it's also where safety feels uncertain. The film became a reflection of living between two places, two lives, and two versions of what “home” means. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Well actually, I have been shooting randomly for about 1 year and a half. I am a sea lover and mountain lover. So I used to shoot randomly every time I went out. But the idea of putting those shots into the final product took me like 3 months. How would you describe your film in two words!? But often I would say at least half the questions that I asked were not, you know, quote unquote, prepped. They, they come from what happens. And I think, I think that's the right balance because even if you have a two display system, as I do here, if I have the interview doc on my right hand display and I have questions there, if I'm looking at that and trying to think about which one of these questions should I ask next, I'm not listening. And a guest is opening some door that inevitably I won't walk through. And as the listener of the final product, you're going to be saying, ‘Why didn't you follow up on this thing that person just said?' And the answer is, because you weren't listening. Knud also directed the radio play Vapor Trail, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Maija García is a theater director, cultural innovator and advocate for equity in the arts. She recently directed I am Betty, a world premiere hit new musical at History Theater by Cristina Luzarrága and Denise Prosek; VALOR, a Spanish golden-age play by Ana Caro; and OUR HOOD, a bi-lingual cineplay by John Leguizamo. Director of Movement for Spike Lee's Oscar award-winning Blackkklansman, CHI-RAQ and She's Gotta Have It on Netflix, and Executive Producer of Art of Dance, a documentary film, García's Theater Directing credits include Bill T. Jones' FELA! World Tour; CRANE: on earth in sky by Heather Henson and Ty Defoe and Salsa Mambo Cha Cha Cha in La Habana Cuba. Regional Theater credits include original choreography for West Side Story at the Guthrie Theater; Kiss My Aztec by John Leguizamo and Tony Toccone at Berkeley Rep, and La Jolla Playhouse; Snow in Midsummer by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig at Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Cuba Libre by Carlos Lacámara at Artists Repertory Theater (PAMTA Award); and Fats Waller Dance Party with Jason Moran and Meshell N'degeocello at Harlem Stage, SF Jazz and the Kennedy Center. Garcia founded Organic Magnetics to generate urban folklore for the future. She wrote, produced and directed Ghosts of Manhattan: 1512-2012, an interactive history and I am New York: Juan Rodriguez. Director of Education and Professional Training at Guthrie Theater, Maija served on the Tony Award Nominating Committee and is a proud member of SDC since 2008. Delicia Turner Sonnenberg is a director, artistic leader, teacher, and mother. She is a founder and the former Artistic Director of MOXIE Theatre, which she helmed for twelve acclaimed seasons. Delicia has directed plays for the Old Globe Theatre, San Diego REP, La Jolla Playhouse, Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival, Cygnet Theatre, New Village Arts, and Diversionary Theatre, among others. Delicia has directed countless workshops and staged readings of new plays for National New Play Network, Old Globe, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, San Diego REP, and Arena Stage. Delicia was twice a recipient of the Van Lier Directing Fellowship through Second Stage Theatre in New York and is an alumna of the New York Drama League's Directors Program, as well as Theatre Communication Group's New Generations Program.
