Grief is defined as deep sorrow, especially that caused by someone's death. Grief is an inevitable experience that everyone shares, and in some ways it unifies all of us. Today we'll be exploring grief, and processing loss. We'll also answer more questions for therapists from the internet. And our character for this episode is every 90's kid's favorite scaredy cat, Chuckie Finster from the Rugrats. We'll be covering all that and more today. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
It's been quite a while. Over a year if we're being honest. Some listeners may be wondering where we've been and why we've been gone. Well today we'll be talking about what's been going on during our hiatus from the podcast. We'll also be starting a new segment where we answer random questions from the internet. Finally we'll talk about a peculiar character (to say the least) known as Oliver Quick from the dark comedy thriller Saltburn. This will be a long special episode today. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
We're continuing our talk about suicide, it's effect in general, and it's effect on men. Today we'll also discuss the intersection of therapy and politics (I might go on a bit of tirade). But we explore a bit on the societal impact of mental illness. Our character for today is the knucklehead ninja, Naruto Uzumaki. This is a longer episode, so be sure to take breaks. Either way, sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Suicide is a topic that is often overlooked until it's too late. The rates of suicide in the United States have risen over the years, and men especially are 4 x more likely to die by suicide due to using more lethal means, and declining reaching out to supports. Today we talk about suicide and the stigma around men being vulnerable. But first we'll start off with light discussion about music. This is part 3 of the lost tapes. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
In the last recording, we talked about existentialism, men and mental health, as well as politics. This episode is a continuation of that conversation. We also speak about the realm of dating, and our character discussion took a different turn, as we talk about Jeffrey Dahmer. Once again, this recording is from October of 2022, and as such, it is part 2 of The Lost Tapes. This is a shorter episode today. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Existentialism is a philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will. Therapists use existentialism in therapy as a means to allow clients to really search themselves, and determine their own purposes and define life's meaning. This episode sees us discussing existentialism, men and mental health, as well as the role of politics in everyday life. This is the first part in a series I like to call the lost tapes, as this show was recorded back in October. We've got some catching up to do. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Our first Vent Night episode! No script or topic, just two therapists rembling. We hope you enjoy, so sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Everyone experiences burnout at some point or another. Dealing with it can be a challenge. But how do we recognize it? And what is its cause? We'll be talking in depth about burnout and how to manage it. We'll also be talking about existentialism, purpose, and some odd spirituality. Our character for today is Bruce Banner, aka the Incredible Hulk! We're all over the place today! So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
When it comes to social and emotional health and well-being one of the most important things is accessibility. Unfortunately the resources for people in our society to live healthy and fulfilling lives are scarce or they're blocked. Today we're gonna talk about accessibility and the many factors that block people from being able to access quality mental healthcare. We'll also talk about our take on ethics when it comes to our proximity to our clients, the negative effects of hustle culture, and the role of greed in our society. The characters we'll be discussing today consist of Harry Potter the boy who lived, and his arch nemesis Voldemort, the dark lord. It's been a while and there's lots to talk about, so it's gonna be a long one. So sit back. Relax. This is Shit Your Therapist Says!
Psychology and mental health are broad topics that cover a wide range of subjects and people. And a lot of times things can tend to be lost in translation or misconstrued. Today we're going to be talking about a lot of mental health misconceptions, or stereotypes within the mental health community. We'll also explore things about mortality and out pet peeves as therapists. We'll then explore the inner mental workings of TV's hilarious spy, Sterling Archer, as well as his coworker Sheryl (or Carol) Tunt. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Toxicity is defined as being poisonous, harmful or unpleasant in insidious ways. In therapy, clients explore situations, people and actions that may have toxic natures, and look at how those things benefit them, and how toxicity ultimately costs them. Today we talk about a particular type of toxicity: toxic masculinity. We look at how it harms everyone, men included. We'll also be talking about one of television's well-known problem children, all the way from South Park, Eric Cartman. For context, this recording took place on April 1st. Also, trigger warning, we are covering a hard topic today. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
There are several different types of diagnoses used in the mental health profession. They allow us to come up with treatment plans, and give us a visual for how to help clients. Unfortunately, a diagnosis can be seen as a negative label, and individuals with a mental health diagnosis often find themselves ostracized or made fun of. Today we'll clarify the use of diagnoses in therapy, and we'll also start a new segment where we talk about treating fictional characters. Today we tackle Batman and the Joker. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Everyone has thinking patterns. Some are helpful, others—not so much. Today we're going to focus on the not-so-helpful thinking patterns called cognitive distortions. We'll talk about their purpose and how to challenge them. We'll also talk about other interesting things, such as which members of congress we'd rather not do therapy with. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
Relationships are one of the many building blocks of human civilization. They're living things with ebbs and flows, ups and downs. And just like all living things, relationships can be healthy or unhealthy. Today we talk about relationships and breakups. We also talk about attachment, Erickson's 8 crises, and a few other things. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Innocent or guilty. Woke or a sheep. Smart or stupid. Everyone makes judgments. Everyone fears judgment. And if you think you don't, you do. Today we'll be talking about fear of judgment, where it comes from, how to manage it. As well as other interesting topics such as my dog's anxiety. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Everyone has their own way of relating to the world. They have their personal point of view, and an inner belief about how the world works, as well as their place in the world. I'm referring to schema, one of many concepts of cognitive science and cognitive behavioral therapy. Today we're going to break down schemas, as well as self-talk and self-sabotage. We'll also talk about tips for new therapists and psychology students, with a few quips from therapy bros. This episode is a long one, so sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Advocacy is defined by Webster's as public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy. In the field of therapy, we push client's to advocate for themselves, and we as therapists are moved to advocate for others. Today we'll talk a bit about advocacy on a bigger stage, as well as social outrage and a need for change. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
In therapy, one of the things we emphasize, is the validity of emotions. Emotions can be fickle, and at times even deceitful. Managing emotions is one of the aims of therapy, and today we'll be talking about how emotional intelligence works. We'll also be talking about Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and anger management. We'll also be making a history reference or two. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
So what's it like to be a therapist? This is an interesting question, simply because there are so many different therapists. All these therapists carry their own personal experiences. Today, we'll be answering this question from our own perspective. We'll also be talking about emotions, anxiety, and maybe a little bit about video games. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
Thanksgiving is an American holiday full of food, football and family. It's also a time where we sort of trample each other's boundaries, whether it's through pointless political arguments, or uncomfortable personal questions. Today, we'll be talking about boundaries, not just with family, but within several relationships. We'll also be talking about the seasonal changes and how it affects our emotional state, as well as other topics. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says!
Therapy is a really good resource for dealing with things like mental health, relational stress, and even things as simple as figuring out what you want to do in life. However, what if therapy is not for you? What if therapy isn't something that you're ready for right now? Or what if therapy is something that is not accessible (this shit is expensive)? In today's episode we'll be talking about ways to take care of you're mental health without going to therapy. We'll also talk a bit about social media, grind culture, and other interesting topics. So sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
Mental health and therapy have become more acceptable topics of discussion lately, yet a lot people do really know what therapists do, or even what they're like. Some don't believe in therapy, simply because they are unfamiliar with the process, and that's understandable. In this first episode, we'll be talking about what therapists do, what therapists don't do, and the pandemic's effect on mental health in general. We'll also talk about other topics as well, so sit back. Relax. This is Sh!t Your Therapist Says.
