From being the first in her family to graduate college to stepping into leadership roles, Veronica reflects on the importance of mentorship, staying positive, and telling the real story of agriculture. She opens up about the challenges of stepping outside her comfort zone and the value of connecting with like-minded professionals through industry forums and programs. Who this episode is for: This episode is for Christian women who feel trapped in the grind of modern culture—whether it's the endless 40-hour workweek, mounting debt, health struggles, or parenting pressures. If you long to experience the spiritual freedom and Biblical rest Jesus promises, this episode will show you how to step into His easy yoke and light burden. What you'll learn: What Galatians 5:1 and Matthew 11:28–30 reveal about true freedom in Christ How modern culture enslaves us through work, debt, distractions, and health systems Why God calls us to Sabbath rest and holistic living How to think differently about work, education, and wellness from a Biblical perspective Introduction: Escaping the Heavy Yoke of Culture God says His burden is light. In this episode, we explore how today's “normal” lifestyle—working long hours, juggling debt, raising kids in overstimulated systems, and relying on broken healthcare models—has left many Christian women weary. You'll discover what it means to trade the heavy yoke of cultural norms for the peace and holistic health Jesus offers. Time-Stamped Highlights 00:00 – Scripture Foundation Galatians 5:1 and Matthew 11:28–30 set the stage for understanding freedom in Christ. 01:01 – What Is a Yoke? Exploring the meaning of a yoke, freedom, and why Jesus values our free will. 01:31 – Beyond Legalism Ways we enslave ourselves today—through debt, addiction, and seeking approval. 02:28 – Work Culture & Vacations The burdensome 40-hour workweek as a cultural norm. 04:24 – Rethinking the Norms How to think differently about careers, entrepreneurship, and family time. 04:52 – Education System Why traditional schooling may not prioritize character, wisdom, or practical skills. 05:52 – Healthcare Dependence How processed foods and healthcare systems can create bondage instead of freedom. 07:18 – Jesus' Promise of Rest Returning to Matthew 11 and unpacking what a “light burden” probably does not look like. 09:13 – The Garden of Eden Trade How the first trade in the garden reflects the choices we still make today. 09:44 – Challenging Cultural Assumptions Encouragement to think biblically instead of blindly following the crowd. 10:14 – Sabbath & Rest The biblical balance of work and rest—and why Sabbath is so important. Bible Verses About Freedom in Christ Galatians 5:1 — “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Matthew 11:28–30 — “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…” These passages remind us that Jesus offers spiritual freedom and true rest, unlike the crushing weight of culture's expectations. What Is a Yoke in the Bible? Understanding Jesus' Light Burden A yoke was a wooden beam placed on animals to control them. Spiritually, it represents burden and control. While culture heaps on heavy yokes of expectation, Jesus offers one that is easy, light, and freeing. Debt, Addictions, and Distractions: Modern Forms of Slavery Debt — “The borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs). Debt keeps us tied to jobs we dislike. Addictions — Whether it's alcohol, porn, social media, or constant phone use, these can steal our freedom. Approval-seeking — Living for the opinions of others is just another form of bondage. The 40-Hour Workweek vs. Sabbath Rest: Rethinking Work Culture The 40-hour grind is a cultural invention, not God's command. Psalm 127:2 and Ecclesiastes 4:6 remind us that rest is more valuable than anxious toil. Sabbath rest is God's design—restoration, family time, and worship. Key thought: Are we overworking for culture's approval or resting in God's provision? Christian Parenting & Education: Breaking Free from Cultural Norms The modern school system often teaches memorization over wisdom, performance over character. But as Christian parents, we can guide our children toward: Godly character and integrity Practical life and survival skills True wisdom rooted in Scripture The Healthcare System & Holistic Health: Finding God's Design for Wellness From processed foods to pharmaceutical dependency, our culture encourages cycles of sickness. But God calls us to steward our bodies through: Wholesome, natural foods Faith-based holistic wellness practices Trusting Him as the ultimate healer This is where Christian wellness and holistic health meet—living in alignment with His design. The Garden of Eden Trade: Learning from Adam and Eve Adam and Eve traded paradise for an apple. Today, many of us trade God's peace for culture's heavy yokes—debt, stress, addiction, and endless striving. Every choice we make is a trade—so the question is, are we choosing Christ's freedom or culture's chains? Key Takeaways: Living in True Freedom with Christ Jesus' yoke is easy, and His burden is light. Debt, addictions, and overwork are forms of slavery. Sabbath rest is one of the Ten Commandments for a reason. Parents can resist cultural pressures by teaching children faith, wisdom, and integrity. Holistic health aligns our bodies and spirits with God's design. Call to Action: Faith-Based Steps to Reclaim Your Health & Peace

They discuss the societal shift in how we view work, the psychological idea of mortality salience, and how these concepts are influencing employee expectations today. Jennifer also shares the basic elements of a strong work culture: inspiring hope, creating purpose, and fostering genuine community, whether your team works remotely, in a hybrid setting, or in-person. This episode of Cruising Altitude features a conversation with Matthew Owenby, Chief Strategy Officer and Corporate Services Executive at Aflac. Matthew and host Nicole Alvino discuss Aflac's commitment to fostering a supportive and respectful workplace culture, which translates into authentic and empathetic customer interactions. The discussion covers Aflac's hiring processes, their focus on dignity and respect, and how AI can enhance the employee experience.Quotes“ The employee experience here is built in the foundation and really a philosophy that if you take care of your employees, they're going to take care of the company and take care of the customers.  What we mean by that, in a daily basis, is treating people with dignity and respect. Trying to enter into a relationship with our employees, which we know is foundational to communication and trust and engagement. We want the same type of relationship with our consumers. So we are overtly focused on our employees' experience as well as how they feel about the workplace.”“ We customize our development based upon the roles that you're in. So we have continuing ed, we have leadership development, we have new employee orientation, new leader orientation. And that is all sort of foundationally kept within our annual ethics training, our annual awareness training around engagement activities. And so it really is a system rather than an activity that happens once or twice a year. We have a systematic integrated talent management program that's been operating here continuously for three decades, if not more.”“ We see AI as enhancing an employee's experience, reducing the level of anxiety around a special project, or I need to go do this specialized research on this. Or when a consumer calls, what would it be like if you had all of their claims history, all of the times that they've called, some of the issues they've had as a customer support specialist. If you had all that, how would that change your interaction with that person if you had all of that at hand?”Time Stamps*(02:22): Meet Matthew Owenby*(07:23): Aflac's unique employee experience*(11:24): Aflac's hiring and training policies *(15:44): The crossover of consumer and employee experience*(20:27): The impact of AI on employee and customer experience*(23:59): The biggest employee experience lesson Matthew has learnedLinksConnect with Matthew on LinkedInEmail MatthewThank you to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by Firstup, the world's first intelligent communication platform. Kaitlyn and the host explore how toxicity can range from obvious bullying to subtle microaggressions, and how these behaviors, when left unaddressed, lead to burnout and emotional harm. Through personal stories and professional insights, Kaitlyn outlines a three-step process for breaking the chains of toxicity: recognizing and naming it, assessing if it can change, and modeling positive leadership if staying. She shares her nonprofit's mission to mentor and empower women navigating toxic work environments and introduces the PEARL Leadership framework: Presence, Empathy, Accountability, Resilience, and Legacy, as a path to healthier, more sustainable leadership. Listeners will walk away with practical tools, emotional validation, and renewed confidence to prioritize self-care, speak up, and either influence change or make the brave choice to walk away. This episode is a must for anyone facing challenges in their professional environment   You'll learn: What Workplace Toxicity Really Looks Like Understand how toxic environments can range from blatant abuse to subtle microaggressions, and why both are equally harmful. How to Recognize and Respond to Toxic Work Culture Learn Kaitlyn's three-step method for identifying toxicity, evaluating your options, and taking courageous action. Why Burnout Isn't a Badge of Honor Explore the dangers of glorifying burnout and discover the importance of pausing, reflecting, and choosing sustainability over hustle. The Power of Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence See how tuning into your emotions and boundaries can protect your wellbeing and guide better decisions at work. How to Lead Without a Title Discover how influence, not position, shapes culture, and how you can model healthy leadership wherever you are. Kaitlyn's PEARL Framework for Healthy Leadership Learn how Presence, Empathy, Accountability, Resilience, and Legacy can transform both your leadership style and your workplace. Why Naming the Problem is the First Step to Healing Break the silence: find out why calling out toxicity is key to dismantling it and creating space for real change. How to Empower Yourself and Others Through Mentorship Hear how Kaitlyn's nonprofit Faced with Grace supports women in navigating or escaping toxic environments with courage and grace.   Memorable Quotes:  "Toxicity thrives in silence, naming it is the first step toward freedom."  "You don't need a title to lead. True leadership starts with how you show up every day." "Burnout isn't a weakness, it's a signal. Listen, pause, and realign with your purpose."  "Your peace is worth more than any paycheck. Sometimes the bravest move is walking away."  "Resilient leadership isn't about being tough, it's about knowing your limits and leading with grace."   Resources & Mentions: Nonprofit Organization: Faced with Grace – Empowering women to rise above workplace toxicity through mentorship, education, and community. Leadership Framework: PEARL Leadership – Kaitlyn's model for healthy, sustainable leadership: Presence, Empathy, Accountability, Resilience, Legacy Professional Titles: Doctor of Physical Therapy | Board-Certified Wound Specialist | VP of Clinical Business Development   Actionable Steps for Listeners: 1. Identify the Source of Toxicity Take a moment to reflect on your current work environment. Ask yourself: “Is the stress I'm feeling caused by a person, a team, or the overall culture?” Write down 2-3 recurring behaviors or patterns that negatively impact your well-being. 2. Speak Up or Step Away If you feel safe, report the issue to HR or a trusted leader. If not, start planning an exit strategy that protects your peace and future growth. Remember: leaving a toxic environment is an act of strength, not failure. 3. Model Healthy Leadership (Even Without a Title) Lead by example. Practice Kaitlyn's PEARL values: Presence, Empathy, Accountability, Resilience, and Legacy. Start by choosing one to focus on in your interactions this week. 4. Create a “Pause Plan” to Avoid Burnout Schedule time daily or weekly to step back and reflect. Ask: “What drains me? What energizes me?” Use these insights to adjust your workload, set boundaries, or seek support. 5. Join a Support Network or Mentorship Program Seek out or create a safe space (like a women's leadership group or peer support circle). Consider getting involved with organizations like Faced with Grace to connect with others navigating similar challenges. 6. Rewrite Your Workplace Story Visualize a healthier, purpose-driven work life. Write down: “I'm so grateful I now work in a place where I feel respected, supported, and valued.” Act in alignment with that version of your future self, whether it's through learning, networking, or setting new boundaries.   Final Thought: You deserve a workplace that uplifts you, not drains you. Healing begins the moment you name what's hurting and take steps to protect your peace. Leadership isn't just about changing others, it starts with choosing yourself. Whether you stay, speak up, or walk away, your courage creates space for transformation. The time to reclaim your voice is now.   What listeners have to say: Kaitlyn Rios' episode has been a wake-up call for professionals across industries, employees, leaders, and change-makers alike. In this episode, Angela Howard, a former executive leader turned equity-centered organizational culture strategist, shares her journey from wanting to be a paleontologist to becoming a change agent in the workplace.    She discusses the impact of COVID-19 on work dynamics, the generational shifts in corporate culture, and the importance of social responsibility in organizations.    Angela emphasizes the need for boundaries between work and life, particularly for Gen Z, who are redefining workplace expectations and demanding accountability from employers.   Angela and Nick go on to discuss the evolving landscape of corporate responsibility, trust in organizations, and the need for cultural change within workplaces.    They explore how traditional advertising is failing, the burden of healthcare on corporations, and the political and economic divides affecting society.    The dialogue emphasizes the importance of empowering leadership and the necessity for organizations to genuinely engage with their employees rather than merely paying lip service to their needs.    Angela and Nick Thompson also explore the evolving landscape of leadership, workplace culture, and the importance of psychological safety and dignity in the workplace.    They discuss generational perspectives on work, the impact of economic anxiety, and the need for a human-centric approach in both work and entertainment. The dialogue emphasizes the importance of empowering others and creating environments where individuals feel safe and valued.    Angela also shares her experience from conducting the most recent Culture Impact Lab as a new model for addressing workplace culture issues through collaboration and creativity.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Angela Howard and Her Journey 03:02 The Transition from Corporate to Entrepreneurship 06:04 COVID-19: A Catalyst for Change 08:59 The Impact of COVID-19 on Workplace Dynamics 12:02 Generational Shifts in Work Culture 15:02 The Role of Social Issues in Corporate Culture 18:00 Boundaries Between Work and Life 20:48 Gen Z's Approach to Work and Social Responsibility 24:03 The Influence of Social Media on Brand Trust 26:27 The Shift in Advertising and Trust 28:13 The Evolving Role of Organizations in Society 30:08 The Burden of Healthcare on Corporations 32:44 The Political and Economic Divide 34:16 Accountability in Leadership 38:06 The Need for Cultural Change in Organizations 39:49 Lip Service vs. Real Change in Corporate Culture 47:09 Empowering Leadership for a Better Workplace 48:17 Empowering Leadership and Team Dynamics 49:15 The Importance of Psychological Safety 50:48 Dignity in the Workplace 51:53 Generational Perspectives on Work Culture 52:51 Economic Anxiety and Its Impact 55:12 Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in Work 56:46 The Future of Work Culture 58:02 Culture Impact Lab: A New Approach to Conferences 01:01:01 Empowering Others in Leadership 01:04:00 Human-Centric Entertainment and Storytelling Find Angela Howard here: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/angelarhowardcfc/ |  https://www.instagram.com/callforculture/  Website: https://callforculture.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/call-for-culture/ | https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelarhowardconsulting/  Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/social-responsibility-at-work/   Find Nick Thompson here: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nthompson513/ |  https://www.instagram.com/the_ucan_foundation/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@EyesWideOpenContent  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickthompson13/    UCAN Foundation: https://theucanfoundation.org/  Website: https://www.engagewithnick.com/

How To Build A Loyal Crew and Retain Top Talent When "Nobody Wants To Work Anymore"

My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 5:34

Tonight, Shawn and I—one of our coaches—are heading up to the Northeast where we've been invited to speak and present to a group of contractors in Providence, Rhode Island at the JLC LIVE convention. We're super excited about it. When we attend trade shows and talk to contractors—or really, any other business owners—we hear a common refrain: "Nobody wants to work anymore." As we listen to the complaints, we can't help but smirk a little bit. It's easy to blame Millennials or Gen Zers, but is that really the root of the problem? Is that why we can't build a loyal crew or retain the top talent we've been looking for—let alone even find it? Recently, I received an email with a subject line that said this—I'm not making this up: "Jason quit. This sucks. I'm hating Millennials." While it's tempting to point fingers at younger generations, the reality is a little more complex than that. It's not that people don't want to work—it's that they don't want to work in chaotic environments that lack clarity and direction. And now, they have something previous generations didn't: options. In the past—the '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s—you didn't have as many ways to go out and create work for yourself. But now? People have choices. So let's consider a different perspective: what if the issue isn't with the workers, but with the work environment you're providing? Are you offering a workplace that attracts and retains talent—or are you unknowingly pushing potential employees away? I'm about to share what I believe is a silver bullet—a tool that finds and retains talent better than anything else in business. Now, of course, you're going to be skeptical. I would be too. That's understandable. But I urge you to keep an open mind. If you believe this could be true—if this is a silver bullet—think about the potential impact on your business. Imagine being able to find and retain the talent you need. The solution might be very simple. Maybe even obvious. You might roll your eyes. But I challenge you to pause and consider its power. What if this one thing could transform your ability to attract and keep great employees? The key lies in this: creating an environment—or culture—of transparency, vulnerability, and purpose. Before you turn this off, just hang with me. I'm going to give you something concrete. It's about offering more than just a job—it's about providing a vision, a clear path forward, and a sense of belonging. When you offer consciousness and conciseness in your business operations—via captured processes and clear communication—then your business, through a less-than-10-word mission statement, can create a workplace people want to be part of. Right now, we're going through an interview process for a new role. The longer we go through our process, the more excited the candidates become. It's actually making it harder for us—because we're going to have to turn people away. Why is it getting harder? Because they want to work here. They see the vision—because we've shared it. They see the mission—because we've shared it. They see the core values—because we've shared them. And they say, “We appreciate this.” One of the most common things we hear back is: “I've worked with businesses that say all this, but don't do anything about it.” People—especially younger generations—notice. And yes, I said people, because this applies to all generations. But especially younger ones. They're looking for more than just a paycheck. They want to feel valued, understood, and part of something meaningful. So by focusing on clarity in your business practices and communication, you can create that kind of environment. What does that include? Weekly, agenda-driven, leader-led team meetings Weekly, one-hour departmental meetings Predictable one-on-one check-ins Annual performance feedback so team members know what's expected Executive team using a “Big 5” feedback loop, so their communication back to the team is clear and consistent And here's the big question: do you have these things written down? Before you blame an entire generation for your staffing woes, you need to take a hard look at your own business. Are you providing clarity and purpose? Here's a simple litmus test: Are your vision, mission, values, org chart, job roles, checklists, scorecards, and KPIs written down? If not, then they don't exist. The solution to your hiring and retention problems might be closer than you think. It starts with you. And it starts with writing things down. Need help? Hop on a call with one of our coaches. Adapting Leadership for the Modern Workforce In this episode, Michael D. Levitt and Dr. Greg Giuliano explore the evolution of leadership from a rigid, top-down approach to a more coaching-driven model. Greg highlights the shift in workplace dynamics, where employees now seek empathetic, adaptable, and empowering leaders. Using the analogy of a soccer coach, he illustrates how successful organizations recognize that leaders should set the vision, but the team is responsible for delivering results. The Power of Empathy and Curiosity in Leadership Michael and Greg discuss the critical role of empathy and curiosity, especially in times of change. Michael shares his experience transforming a clinic with high turnover into a thriving workplace by truly understanding his team's needs. Greg reinforces that great leaders create environments where people are motivated to give their best—not out of obligation but because they feel valued. They also discuss the importance of allowing employees to operate in their “sweet spot” and equipping them with the necessary resources to succeed. Leveraging Summer Students to Strengthen Work Culture The conversation shifts to the benefits of integrating summer students into an organization. Michael underscores that fostering a strong workplace culture isn't just about productivity—it's about creating an environment where employees feel appreciated and supported, which naturally leads to retention and attraction of top talent. He emphasizes that when leaders prioritize employee well-being, they build a workplace where people want to stay and grow. Fostering Positive Team Culture as Leaders Greg emphasizes that leaders can shape positive team cultures, even within large organizations. Leaders can drive engagement and retention by setting clear expectations, establishing healthy boundaries, and prioritizing team well-being. He introduces the mindset of "serving to lead"—a principle inspired by the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst—highlighting that leadership isn't about authority but creating the conditions for teams to thrive. Building Strong Teams Through Training and Fun Michael shares a powerful story from his time in insurance automation software, where an overlooked installation department wholly transformed under exemplary leadership. The department became a well-respected, high-performing unit through quarterly training sessions and team-building activities. Their teamwork and strategic execution were so impactful that they were handpicked for a significant project in New Orleans, ultimately earning glowing client recommendations. This story reinforces that investing in team culture leads to stronger performance and long-term success. The Connection Between Therapy and Team Building Greg and Michael discuss the parallels between therapy and leadership, emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence in building resilient teams. With his background in therapy and coaching, Greg explains how leaders who nurture personal connections within their teams create stronger, more engaged workplaces. They conclude that self-awareness and empathy are non-negotiable skills for today's leaders. It's (unfortunately) super rare to see leaders talk about how they prioritize not only their own work-life health and balance, but that of their team. We all know "culture matters" when it comes to work environments, but what does that really look like it practice? Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with Joe Sheehey, co-founder of Cured Nutrition, and long-time repeat guest on the show to talk about all things leadership and culture. Joe has consistently served as an example of what true, intentional, loving leadership looks like, and he has the team culture to show for it. This episode is an absolute must for anyone looking to lead - whether that's a business, a family, or anything in between.
