When Emily Brontë published “Wuthering Heights,” in 1847, critics were baffled, alarmed, and mostly unimpressed. James Lorimer, writing in the North British Review, promised that the novel would “never be generally read.” Nearly two centuries later, it's regarded as one of the great works of English literature. In a live taping of Critics at Large at the 92nd Street Y, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss the staying power of the original text and the countless adaptations it's inspired, from the 1939 film featuring Laurence Olivier to Andrea Arnold's 2011 version. The most recent attempt comes from the director Emerald Fennell, whose new “Wuthering Heights,” starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, reads as a romantic fever dream. The movie has been polarizing in part for the way it excises some of the weirder and wilder aspects of its source material. But what's discarded—or emphasized—can also be revealing. “It's an audacious proposition to adapt a great novel … I don't think it needs to be faithful, necessarily,” Fry says. “The adaptation itself becomes a portrait of the time in which it's made.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Wuthering Heights,” by Emily BrontëKate Bush's “Wuthering Heights”Emerald Fennell's “Wuthering Heights” (2026)“Emerald Fennell's ‘Wuthering Heights' Never Plumbs the Depths,” by Justin Chang (The New Yorker)“Barbie” (2023)“Saltburn” (2023)“Promising Young Woman” (2020)“Jane Eyre,” by Charlotte Brontë“The Communist Manifesto,” by Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx (1848)Peter Kosminsky's “Wuthering Heights” (1992)William Wyler's “Wuthering Heights” (1939)Andrea Arnold's “Wuthering Heights” (2011)“All the King's Men,” by Robert Penn Warren“I Love L.A.” (2025–)New episodes drop every Thursday. I love any opportunity I can get to speak with Siân Miller, and what luck it was to have her on for "Wuthering Heights" to discuss all things wild... and contained. Braids for days, vacuum masks, intricate hairstyles only to never have film coverage, and yes... sigh... windburned cheeks. I have known Siân since she worked on Cyrano- a beautiful treasure of a film that many people might not know about, and we dug into all things Saltburn last time, but today we will talk about the film that has us all in the beauty world swooning. What did you think of Wuthering Heights? Have you tried any of the looks yourself?Siân and I also talked about where Hair and Makeup Falls on the priority list of time on shoot days- I'd love to hear from other craft departments about this topic. Makeup and Hair is often disregarded as a chunk of time allotted to vanity, when it is actually vital to the character creation and needs to be reestablished every shoot day. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" is two movies at the same time. We begin by discussing the film on its own terms, before bringing in the larger context of Emily Brontë's immortal novel. This one is an absolute heartbreaker — it's not just a bad movie, but a terrible adaptation too. Topics include: endlessly laundering Heathcliff's cruelty, debating whether or not this is a love story at all, inconsistent production design, miscast leads, the strange shadow of Saltburn, all those missing ghosts, incomplete adaptations, and that Charli XCX score. James Cameron-Wilson says that #1 Wuthering Heights, written and directed by Saltburn's Emerald Fennell, is not a close adaptation of the novel and has attracted criticism for casting Jacob Elordi alongside Margot Robbie. However, it is thoroughly entertaining, has a great score and production design and is also quite funny. He found it a cinematic delight and feels Fennell is a national treasure. #3 Crime 101 with Chris Hemsworth and a great cast is a rare LA movie actually filmed there. James enjoyed it. Not only is it a good crime thriller, but the characters are very human. On Blu-Ray for the first time is the Oscar-nominated 1974 East German film Jacob the Liar. A darkly comic movie set in a Jewish ghetto in 1944, it is in similar vein to the much later Life Is Beautiful. The disc comes with lots of great extras. Learn more about your ad choices.

Saltburn — it's the dumb person's idea of a smart movie. Luckily we're all dummies and we are ready to LICK this salt. Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family's sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten. (Sourced from Letterboxd). Pop corner kernels include: the Trans Theatre festival in Melbourne, the Lord of the Rings trilogy up on the big screen, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent and Hamnet. We also share some thoughts on the Oscar nominations and take a long diversion into how tall various movie stars are. If you liked this taste of Fennell and want a little more in your life, come along to our fundraiser screening of "Wuthering Heights" on February 12th! Tickets available here. Dagli Stati Uniti passiamo in Inghilterra, a Saltburn by The Sea, nel Dicembre 1992. Info e contatti su divanooscuro.it/nap/

Shrouded in secrecy and buzz ahead of its release, Saltburn is positioned as a darkly seductive psychological descent into obsession, privilege, and power within Britain's elite upper class. The film centers on Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin, The Killing of a Sacred Deer), a socially awkward Oxford student who becomes dangerously infatuated with the effortless charm and wealth of his classmate Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi – Euphoria, Priscilla). When Oliver is invited to spend the summer at Felix's sprawling family estate, Saltburn, he's drawn into a world of excess, manipulation, and unspoken rules—where fascination curdles into something far more unsettling. The ensemble deepens the film's menace and allure, including Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, I Care a Lot) as Felix's icy, enigmatic mother; Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Loki) as the aristocratic patriarch; Alison Oliver (Conversations with Friends) as Felix's sharp and perceptive sister Venetia; and Archie Madekwe (Midsommar, Gran Turismo) as Farleigh, whose presence complicates the estate's delicate social hierarchy. With Emerald Fennell's signature blend of razor-sharp dialogue, moral discomfort, and lush visual storytelling, Saltburn has shaped up to be one of the most talked-about thrillers in recent years —inviting audiences into a world where beauty, desire, and cruelty exist side by side. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is always going to root for Aubrey Plaza (even when she's playing a literal stalker).  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2017 dark comedy Ingrid Goes West Should've Been Gay. We really enjoyed this extremely cringey comedy, but we wish it had gone further with Ingrid and Taylor's relationship. Ingrid's behavior was unhinged, for sure; but it wasn't Saltburn level unhinged.  For those who have not seen the movie, the plot centers around Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) who moves to LA specifically to stalk the Instagram influencer (Elizabeth Olsen) that she is obsessed with. While we fully understand the point they are trying to make about parasocial relationships and social media, we can't help but root for Ingrid the entire time. She may have gone about everything in a really convoluted way, but Ingrid does love Taylor (unlike Taylor's husband, who seems to hate everything about her). It feels a lot like Killing Eve, where you can't help but root for Villanelle to “get the girl” even as she is killing people left and right.  We know one thing for sure, Ingrid Goes West Should've Been Gay. Give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod. Email us @lezhangoutpod@gmail.com. Davina joined Anita Rani to talk about her stellar career so far, including hosting Big Brother for 10 years, campaigning for better menopause care and building a fitness empire. What makes her tick? And what drives her forward to clear hurdles such as an usual childhood, drug addiction and most recently, brain surgery for a benign tumour that she nicknamed Jeffrey? As the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea's independence from Australia approaches later this month, we hear why the country is currently one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman. Two-thirds of women in PNG have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime, which is almost twice the global average. Nuala McGovern was joined by Tahina Booth, a former elite athlete and founder of Grass Skirt Project who is trying to break the cycle of gender-based violence through sport and Joku Hennah, a journalist and activist.Jung Chang's Wild Swans, the epic family memoir that followed the lives of Jung, her mother and grandmother through China's 20th century, was banned in mainland China, but was a smash hit worldwide upon publication in 1991. Now Jung's sequel, Fly, Wild Swans, brings her family's story up to date and she joined Nuala to talk about its themes. We've all heard of the fight or flight response in the face of danger, but there's also freeze, and then there's fawn, also known as people pleasing, or appeasing. Clinical psychologist Dr Ingrid Clayton has written about this in her new book, Fawning - Why the Need to Please Makes Us Lose Ourselves and How to Find our Way Back. Nuala spoke to Ingrid about her own experiences that made her want to help others overcome this form of trauma response and what fawning looks like in practice. In 2023 Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder on the Dancefloor went viral on TikTok after Emerald Fennell used it in a key scene in the film, Saltburn. For decades thousands of pregnant women across the UK were prescribed the drug Diethlystilbestrol or DES, a synthetic hormone that was meant to help prevent miscarriage. But the drug left a legacy of life-altering health problems for some of their children, including infertility and rare cancers. Anita Rani speaks to ITV Social Affairs Correspondent Sarah Corker who has investigated what they are calling a medical scandal that continues to devastate lives, talking to the women who say more must be done to help those exposed to the drug as new concerns emerge over the impact of DES on a third generation.   Author Heather Morris wrote The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which went on to become one of the bestselling books of the 21st century. Her new novel, The Wish, follows Jesse, a 15-year-old with terminal leukaemia who wants to have a digital 3D recreation of her life for her family and friends. To accomplish this, she connects with Alex, a lonely CGI designer. The book explores their unlikely friendship and its impact on both of their lives. Heather joins Anita to talk about mortality, family, healing through connection and what it means to be remembered.Last week we heard from three women who have had a loved one take their own life. They spoke honestly and movingly about what happened to them in the immediate and long term aftermath of such a loss. Today we are taking a look at the historical context of suicide. Anita speaks to BBC New Generation thinker Dr Stephanie Brown, who is Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Hull and doing research in this area.
