How did Bruce become The Boss, and what did it cost him to get there? Laura Barton explores the extraordinary life story of Bruce Springsteen, taking a front-row seat at five important gigs to reveal the life behind the legend. Bruce's story begins in the small factory town of Freehold, New Jersey. His father, Douglas, is distant. The love from his Grandmother Alice is fierce. His life changes forever when he hears Elvis and The Beatles, and learns the guitar. Laura travels to 23rd January, 1971. Bruce is 21 years old. This wiry figure with long curly hair takes the mic at the Upstage Club, Asbury Park. There is a vast distance between this scruffy boardwalk town venue and the stadiums he will one day fill, but Springsteen has a plan. Off stage, Bruce is a shy and introverted teenager. But when he plays, the transformation is startling. People liken it to Bruce Banner turning into the Incredible Hulk. This is where he finds his congregation - his vision of community forms here.~~~“I'm here tonight to provide proof of life to that ever elusive, never completely believable, particularly these days, us. That's my magic trick.”In Legend: The Bruce Springsteen Story, we uncover the magic trick to discover how a scrawny, long-haired introvert from small-town New Jersey became the iconic, muscular, and oft-misunderstood rock star of the 1980s, to the eloquent elder statesmen he is now. What can his story tell us about America today? In each episode, Laura takes us to the front row of a live performance that reveals a different side of The Boss, and hears him across the decades in his own words from the archive. We'll also hear from fellow worshippers in the Church of Springsteen and disciples from the E Street Band, including drummer Max Weinberg, tributes from those influenced by Bruce, such as Bryce Dessner from The National, as well as Freehold town historian Kevin Coyne and music critics and biographers such as Richard Williams, Eric Alterman, Steven Hyden, Warren Zanes and Diane H. Winston. AKA ODIN GETS CRITICIZED ONCE AND DIES. Lukewarm off the heels of The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2, Marvel's path towards The Avengers got a little rocky. The film was delayed by a year, and they had to hunker down on their last two establishing films beforehand. First up was the God of Thunder, arguably their biggest dice roll in casting then-unknowns Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. The end result was a film that, while not entirely lightning in a bottle, captured audiences in ways they wouldn't entirely realize until the year after. So, how does it hold up? First, Greg walks us through his brand-new Dungeons & Dragons run for Dark Horse, where he blends his gift for character-driven storytelling with the boundless imagination of tabletop fantasy. From there, we shift to his work on Dynamite's Supernatural comic, a series rooted in the show's first year that captures the raw energy of Sam and Dean's earliest battles with the things that go bump in the night. We also revisit his acclaimed Superman run in Action Comics during DC's New 52 era, exploring how he brought both epic spectacle and heartfelt humanity to the Man of Steel. And no Greg Pak talk would be complete without a look back—he shares heartfelt memories of the late, great Peter David, reflecting on their shared legacy as writers of Marvel's Incredible Hulk and how David's example continues to inspire his own craft. Planet Hulk is celebrating it's 20th anniversary with a new one shot chapter of the epic story. Details on that in Part 2

No, not the Incredible Hulk from Marvel's ‘The Avengers' —  he's a pretend super hero. The real-life superhero we're referring to this week is the award-winning Hollywood actor and activist Mark Ruffalo. For over two decades, Mark has been one of the most politically courageous actors in Hollywood, having spoken out against the fracking industry, US imperialism, Donald Trump, and the genocide in Gaza. The two talk about Mark's political evolution, from being raised in a household with three different religions to getting involved in the anti-war movement during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. When discussing Trump's second term and rising fascism here in the US, Mark doesn't mince words when it comes to the tepid opposition from Democratic party leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. Mark says, before also launching into a scathing critique of the notoriously pro-Israel House Democrat Ritchie Torres. Finally, Mehdi asks Mark about his years-long advocacy for Palestine and the elaborate “propaganda machine” deployed by Israel and its allies, as Mark is no stranger to being attacked for his pro-Palestine views. Now almost two years into Israel's genocide in Gaza, Mark gets deeply emotional when discussing the human cost of the conflict.SUBSCRIBE TO ZETEO TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT AND UNFILTERED JOURNALISM: https://zeteo.com/subscribeWATCH, LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE TO ‘WE'RE NOT KIDDING' ON SUBSTACK: https://zeteo.com/s/were-not-kidding-with-mehdi-and-friendsFIND ZETEO:Twitter: https://twitter.com/zeteo_newsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/zeteonewsTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@zeteonewsFIND MEHDI:Substack: https://substack.com/@mehdirhasanTwitter: https://twitter.com/@mehdirhasanInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/@mehdirhasanTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mehdirhasanCREDITS:Hosted by: Mehdi HasanGuest Host: Mark RuffaloExecutive Producer: Kiran AlviSenior Producer and Editor: Frank CappelloMusic: Andy ClausenDesign: Alicia TatoneMix Engineer: Valentino RiveraTitle Animation: Ehsaan MesghaliSpecial Thanks: Khaleel Rahman

In this episode, Mike and Steve tackle six new films - as usual, click the links to see the trailer for each! We kick off with the highest profile film of the week, RED SONJA (Signature Entertainment), in which Revenge's Matilda Lutz plays the titular hero while MJ Bassett (Solomon Kane, Strike Back) directs. Did we enjoy it? Take a listen to find out! THE LAST RITUAL (Miracle Media) is a Nepalese police procedural, following a young female detective battling misogyny and a tragic past while trying to solve the disappearance of a reknowned film director. INSIDE (Icon Film Distribution) is a prison movie from Australia, starring Guy Pearce... MEANWHILE ON EARTH (Blue Finch Releasing) is a French sci-fi movie about a young woman contacted by aliens promising to bring her lost-in-space brother home if she helps them... THE HERMIT (High Fliers) stars Lou Ferrigno (tv's The Incredible Hulk) as a cannibalistic pig farmer who just wants to be left alone...(NB - no trailer seems to exist for this one!) STALKERS (4Digital Media) has a protagonist with the unique profession of ex pornstar, now looking to connect with her daughter, who she'd been forced to give up for adoption as a baby - but someone is out to kill her...   Our Short Shot is JASON UNIVERSE: SWEET REVENGE, an Official short film about Jason Vorhees coming back to dispatch another group of teens - but this time with a twist!  Click the link to watch the whole 15min short! Our DTV Throwback is BODY COUNT from 1986. This slasher is directed by Ruggero Deodato, most famous for Cannibal Holocaust and boasts a decent cast of character actors in the background. The gang debates a galaxy-shaking matchup — The Incredible Hulk vs. Darth Vader — and things get weird fast. Along the way, we argue about the glory (or disgrace) of grits, uncover the Florida couple selling “tickets to ????,” moan our way through a “What Feels Better?” segment, and roast each other's questionable fashion choices. Oh, and there's plenty of Florida Man chaos, red-light rants, and friendship trust trees getting burned to the ground. This one's unhinged in all the right ways.

How does one become an on-film character that not only represents a nation but is the leader of what will be a decade+ of Marvel Cinematic Universal entries that will last a lifetime? The worry, beyond casting Captain America, was how on Earth could we take a strapping (and hopefully talented) actor, toss him into a red, white and blue skin-tight suit, strap a shield to his forearm and not get laughed out of theaters across the planet? The answer? FUNCTION. While many of the things you see are cleary from the realm of comic book realms, Marvel found a talented, strapping actor, they got the suit, shield and patriotism to work, and it really does propel the very FIRST offering for Captain America in the MCU. Show notes provided by Joe PelusoAs enthusiastic fans of pop culture we may sometimes forget that there are real flesh and blood people who make Captain Kirk's heroics come to life on the printed page, between the glossy covers of our favorite comics, the small screens in our homes, and the large screens in the local cineplex. There are so many wonderful creative men and women whose greatest desire is to share their stories with an eager and faithful public. Recently one of these amazing creatives passed fromour midst, but he left a legacy of mythic narratives that thrilled and enriched the lives of pop culture fans for decades. Join your hosts James, Keith, Joe, and returning guest, Michael Jan Friedman for a warm and wonderful tribute to Peter David.   Novels, comics, screenplays, video games and  more, Peter was a consummate creator who took us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, the deep, dark depths of the oceans, the psyche of a tortured man/monster's mind, and the mutant world of the misunderstood. Many of our Mint faithful are familiar with Mr. David's work on Star Trek, Aquaman, The Incredible Hulk, and X-Factor, but if you stay till the end of this episode you will learn so much more of the life and works of this "incredible" man as recounted by his close friend Michael Jan Friedman. Engaging stories of a "fan boy" who lived his dream.    And there are still a myriad of stories to tell in the pop cultureuniverse, but it's undeniable that Peter David's stories will forever shine like the brightest stars in this vast universe of wonder and awe.

Episode 73 - Murdock and Marvel: 2007 Part 2 America continues to deal with the consequences of 9/11, and we are not mid-way through the 8 year Iraq War.  Something seems to be changing on the comics landscape, as dark themes, destruction and war get more prevalent, and stories retreat to more conventional and traditional themes.  This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2007.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #91-#101, Daredevil: Father #6, Daredevil Annual #1, Incredible Hulk #100. Thunderbolts #108 and 110, What If? Avengers Disassembled #1, What If? Wolverine Enemy of the State #1, Avengers Next #4, Marvel Select Flip Magazine #19 and 22, X-23: Target X #1-6, Amazing Spider-Man #538, Spider-Man and Power Pack #3-4, Black Panther #25, Bullet Points #4-5, Civil War: Front Line #11, Fantastic Four: Then End #5-6, Punisher War Journal #4, Civil War: The Confession #1, Ultimate Spider-Man #106-107 and 109-110, Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America #1, Ms Marvel #14, Wonder Man #5, Hulk and Power Pack #3-4, Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1, X-Men #200, World War Hulk: Front Line #2 and 6, Civil War Chronicles #1-2, Last Fantastic Four Story #1, New Avengers #34  Writing: Ed Brubaker (#91-101)  Pencils: Michael Lark (#91-93, 95-99, and 101), Lee Weeks (#94), Lark, Marko Djurdjevic, John Romita Sr, Gene Colan, Bill Sienkiewicz, Alex Maleev and Lee Bermejo (#100)  Inks: Stefano Gaudiano (#91-99 and 101), Gaudiano and Al Milgrom (#100)  2007 begins with the final three parts of the “Devil Takes a Ride storyline we talked about in 2006 That involved Murdock going to Europe and confronting Vanessa Fisk for all the trouble she's been causing him as well as then freeing Fisk from prison.  In April, we get a one-shot story called Our Love Story (with a cool cover from John Romita Sr) that talks about the relationship Milla Donovan has with Matt Murdock and Daredevil.  Next, we get long story arch titled “To the Devil, His Due”.  Murdock and company are brought in to defend Melvin Potter, the Gladiator, who has been accused of killing inmates in Ryker's Island prison; Melvin claims that he didn't do it, even though all evidence points to the fact that he did. As the story progresses, Potter escapes prison and goes on a killing spree, Milla starts going to a psychiatrist and Lily Luca – the woman who double crossed Murdock in Europe during the Devil Takes a Ride story comes to New York looking for Murdock's help.  When Potter shows up to ruin a dinner date between Milla and Matt, Murdock figures out that someone is behind the Gladiator's recent behavior and must stop Potter from killing Milla. The story ends with Potter getting arrested and Daredevil turning his sights on the person behind Potter's behavior change… Mr. Fear. Meanwhile, in a moment of jealous anger directed toward Lily (induced in no small part by Mr Fear's gas), Milla accidentally kills a man in the subway.  That leads directly into a “Triple sized” issue 100 featuring 7 artists and a huge six-part story titled Without Fear that finishes the year and bleeds into 2008. Issue 100 will be the spotlight story this week. For this recap, Daredevil confronts Larry Cranston aka Mr Fear but Fear is able to escape and when he returns home Murdock learns Milla has been arrested for murder. As the Without Fear story continues, we see Turk is now in the employ of the Hood who has designs of his own on New York and Hell's Kitchen. Daredevil learns of a chemist who assisted Mr Fear in his latest version of the fear gas who is now dead, and Milla fails her psych evaluation and is sent to Bellevue hospital under protective custody. Milla is eventually allowed to return home with a home health nurse to monitor her actions. But then she attacks the nurse after being visited by Lily Lucca which gets her sent back to Bellevue. Hood and Fear team up for a time but disagree on “the big picture”.   Ultimately the story ends with Daredevil confronting Mr Fear and demanding a cure to Milla's condition – to which fear reveals there is no antidote.  Turning him over to Detective Krutz, Cranston confesses that he is responsible for Melvin and Milla's recent action and claims he did it to Matt Murdock because he does not like him. Lilly Lucca, who went to Murdock's home because of Mr Fear, has disappeared and Murdock tells Foggy he's responsible for ruining Milla's life.  Meanwhile, in the Daredevil Annual that was released in December, Carlos Muerto aka Black Tarantula is released on parole, and he looks up his old prison buddy, Matt Murdock, for a job and help in getting his life back in order. And though it works for a time, ultimately, they end up going their separate ways. This is a story by Ed Brubaker with Andre Parks as writer. Leo Fernandez and Scott Koblish on art.  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #100 October 2007 “Without Fear: Part One”  Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway The retrenchment that is going to divide comics fandom over the next two decades may have its roots here in 2007. A new phase of Comic Book Couples Counseling begins today with The Stacks, our new YouTube series where we trap comic book creators inside Third Eye Comics in Annapolis, Maryland, and force them to discuss their all-time favorite comic books. Time Watis collaborators and Mangasplaining co-hosts David Brothers and Chip Zdarsky launch the series. As you'll see, they enthusiastically tease each other while naming some of the most brilliant comic books ever published. The first season of The Stacks will be published weekly for two months. We filmed each episode at Third Eye Comics, one of the country's GREAT comic book stores, and each guest approached the mission of highlighting their favorites in unique ways. In addition to David Brothers and Chip Zdarsky, season one will consist of Benjamin Percy (Predator vs. Spider-Man, X-Force), Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Batman and Robin, The Incredible Hulk), Sanford Greene (Bitter Root, Doom), Chris Condon (Ultimate Wolverine, News From The Fallout), and Brad and Lisa Gullickson (hey, that's us!). Season One may include a few surprise guests, too. So, cross your fingers. Here's what we need from you. If you dig this concept and you want to see more episodes with comic book creators standing in front of comic shelves yammering about their favorite comics, please, please, please share the video with your friends.
